I like Steve Clarke, I like West Brom, and I like Tomas Kalas. Make this happen.
The Daily Mail had some interesting news today about one of Chelsea's young defenders on loan, claiming that Steve Clarke traveled to the Netherlands this past weekend in order to watch Tomas Kalas. Kalas has spent the past two seasons playing basically every minute for Vitesse, and he's been one of the best defenders in the Eredivisie over that time.
I don't see Kalas having any sort of major role at Chelsea next season, as the club should still have enough depth at both center back and right back that he'd probably be best suited getting regular minutes elsewhere. I'm sure Chelsea would have some interest in a more aggressive loan though, as Kalas has probably improved to the point that he'd be best playing against better competition regularly.
West Brom would be an interesting fit at the moment, as they don't have much in the way of right backs. Steven Reid and Billy Jones have played the bulk of the minutes there for West Brom this season, but frankly, Kalas is probably a better player than either of them already. His ability to play center back would also fit in nicely there, as West Brom just aren't deep at the position.
The summer is still a long way off, and I'd be surprised if anything was particularly close on this front. Still, it's good to see that Kalas has caught the eye of top level clubs, and I'd be very excited to send Steve Clarke some more of our youngsters to work with. Beyond his Chelsea connections, he's handled Romelu Lukaku about as well as we could have possibly hoped. I'd love to send him more top young talent to work with, both to help them develop and to help Clarke succeed.
