I know that the daily star isn't exactly the most reliable of tabloids, but if this story is even remotely true, where its mentioned that Lamps is willing to take accept a 50k a week contract with appearance and performance related incentives and yet the club refuse to offer him a contract, then I think its safe to assume there's more than footballing reasons at work here and as a Chelsea fan that makes me angry. Really very angry.
The board has taken a few unpopular decisions in the last few months and although I think like most fans I was able to understand the logic behind not offering Lamps his old contract because of financial reasons, however sad it made me, if this story is even partially accurate then its a disgraceful treatment of a club legend by a board that seems to be following some sort of agenda rather than taking decisions in the best interest of the club. While he may not have the legs of old, he can still more than put in a decent shift as a midfielder which I suspect will only get better if he is used as a squad player. Him, along with Jt, are important l eaders at the club, and give us that fight and spirit of old that seems to be missing in the face of recent adversity.
I really do hope that if Lamps is willing to take such a huge pay cut so that he can remain with the blues, the board is not foolish and stupid to pass up such an opportunity. Whatever happens, Frank Lampard is a true Chelsea legend and deserves to be treated as such by the board. To see him in another team's colours knowing that we could have kept him is not something that I or I'm guessing, any Chelsea fan would ever want to witness.
