I, like many others, have become tired of the 4-2-3-1. It has quickly become dull and predictable and our lack of versatility has been exploited time and time again this season. That's why we've had so many 'games of two halves', West Ham and Arsenal are good examples. They adapted and we didn't, it cost us against West Ham and it almost cost us against Arsenal. These formations are not permanent solutions to our current problems, but can be useful in a season that is quickly turning to shit. Excuses my language, I'm drinking whiskey as I write this. Classy, I know.

Like Barcelona but with more defensive wingers and lacking a certain false-9. I have little to say about this formation, as it is hardly a new one. I like how it frees up the space around the opposition box, an area we just seem to crowd around passing every game until we lose it.

I have paired Terry and Ivanovic in defence, which some would critique due to the lack of pace, all i'll say to this is that good centre backs (which they are) do not need pace, they just need to be clever and disciplined. Pique and Puyol are as slow as Karl Pilkington yet they work fantastically.

I also like how this formation indicates passes coming in to Ba from all angles. Screw Torres, let's build a team around an actual striker.

This still gives us the 'Mazacar', as some have dubbed it, but defensive stability is not sacrificed, with Terry as main central defender, Cahill and Luiz playing as vague defensive mid-fielders/centre backs. I feel this suits they're style of play well, it allows both Luiz and Cahill to surge forward and surprise the opposing team (as they tend to do anyway) and still leave cover at the back, this way we will always have at least two centre backs as cover. This formation requires an odd style of play, as attacks actually depend powerfully on Luiz and Cahill breaking the opposition open with quick and clever runs whilst their defence tracks the movement of the Mazacar. Our enemies surprise can only be to our advantage. We must be patient with this.

Lampard is the play maker here and the team's passing game relies a lot on his discipline and vision, but I think he can do it. He showed against stoke his ability to play this role well.
