Roman wants Barcelona-type football at Stamford Bridge. Guardiola is not available. Swansealona, under Michael Laudrup, has just beaten Chelsea in the League Cup first leg at Stamford Bridge.
As good a coach as Rafa Benitez is, he just hasn't won the important must-win games for Chelsea. Player tiredness or injuries is not an excuse for losing because every team is facing these same issues. This is Chelsea: win or you're out. Same applied to RDM, same applies to Benitez.
Chelsea under Benitez have already lost the Club World Cup final, a trophy the club should have comfortably won given the kind of players Benitez has available to him. The League Cup semi-final first leg 0-2 home loss to Swansea means this trophy is as good as gone. The Premier League title is also realistically out of reach now, after shockingly bad results against struggling teams such as West Ham and QPR at a crucial stage of the season.
Having just watched Swansealona beat Chelsea with a team costing less than a quarter of the price of Chelsea's expensively-assembled squad, Roman must now be sharpening his knives for Benitez and thinking: "Laudrup is a Barcelona legend, good manager, his team plays like Barcelona, and he could persuade Michu and Vorm to join Chelsea..."
The way Laudrup has managed Swansea this season shows he's a good coach with a keen eye for bargain players like Michu, Chico, and Tiendalli. Even underperforming players like Wayne Routledge and Pablo Hernandez have started to look world-class under Laudrup. So for me, Laudrup and Chelsea are a perfect fit if Roman really wants to build a "Barcelona in Blue" dynasty at Chelsea.
What do you think? Does Benitez deserve more time? Or will Roman go for Laudrup in the summer? Who would you prefer: Laudrup or Guardiola?
