Our transfer window started off brightly with the early acquisitions of Marko Marin and Eden Hazard. This went hand in hand with the departure of some of the mainstays of the club, example numero uno being club legend Didier Drogba. The overall focus seemingly being on bringing younger talent into the club and shipping out the older and some less effective/elite players. What was being heralded by some as our best transfer window ever, with adulation falling upon Emenalo, turned into disappointment following our deadline day dealings, or lack of. The reasons I believe for this, I will give after the jump. Approaching the end of the window there were two areas that looked like they needed improvementcentre forward depth and a strengthening of the central midfield, more specifically the deep lying playmaker in the double pivot. The way that we have dealt this window leads me to believe that are main focus isn't on challenging on all fronts specifically with the aim of winning at all costs, but rather putting a new system in place and ultimately changing the old guard. Our attacking midfield saw the quickest and most radical change, with the departures of kalou and anelka being met with the arrival of hazard, Marin and Moses. All young players, with time on their side and an important role to play in short term success as well as long term. I believe this is where the true nature of the window was possibly disguised. The players brought in proved an unrivalled ambition, which many would assume was for the forthcoming season and to challenge for every competition we are in. To the contrary I believe that this was just the first step in change for the future with short term success a bonus. Our midfield, now looking rather thin after the departures of Essien, McEachran and soon Meireles. Now only leaves Lampard and Oscar to fight for the central midfield position. DiMatteo himself said he believes Oscar can play in Lampards position, and although everyone has been worried that he isn't ready. What does it matter if this is a transitional year, he can be lampards understudy for now and when Frank finally kicks it and josh returns then he will be a more complete player and ready to step up. Essien and Meireles didn't fit in with the vision so they were sent away to leave room for Oscars development and also to keep them happy as their days here are clearly numbered. And finally our attack, with Drogba leaving that left the perfect opportunity for Romans biggest purchase to lead the line and hopefully vindicate the money spent on him. I believe Roman is a proud man and doesn't want to seem foolish for his extravagant spending on Torres. So with him being the assured starter and given his last chance to shine, to keep Romans pride in check why would he spend ludicrous amounts on another striker when he wants Torres to succeed. That would surely leave us in need of another backup striker if sturridge is the only other option we have as they sent lukaku on loan. Well they didn't buy one, they got Moses, but he is most likely our right winger as Oscar is destined for central midfield. But wait a second if this is a transitional year then we can let lukaku go on loan and get better even if RDM wanted him here. Clearly he is destined to be our third choice striker, so there is no need to get someone else.
