Double pivot comparison

Stay connected for news and updates

The double pivot has been the most hotly debated subject for a while now. Roberto Di Matteo's insistence to play this way has everyone constantly thinking who will play in the midfield 2. For a while now it has been the Lampard - Mikel pivot, but this season has not been as good as they were at the tail end of last season. Which had me thinking, who has the best double pivot in the premier league. After the Jump, I will give each teams their four best double pivot players, and how they stack up with Chelsea's options.

In bold, I have put a player who is as good as or better than Chelsea's four

  • Arsenal : Ramsey, Arteta, Diaby, Wilshire
  • Aston Villa : Herd, El Ahamadi, Gardner, Bannan
  • Chelsea : Romeu, Mikel, Merelies, Lampard (Ramires and Oscar for me play higher up the pitch)
  • Everton : Gibson, Fellaini, Osman, Odjidja-Ofoe
  • Fulham : Sidwell, Etuhu, Davies, Frei
  • Liverpool : Sahin, Allen, Gerrard, Lucas
  • Manchester City : Toure, Rodwell, Barry, Garcia
  • Manchester United : Scholes, Carrick, Cleverley, Anderson
  • Newcastle United : Cabaye, Tiote, Gosling, Bigirimana
  • Norwich City : Tettey, Hoolahan, Howson, Johnson
  • QPR: M'bia, Granero, Diakite, Park
  • Reading: Guthrie, Howard, Gunnarsson, Karacan
  • Southampton: Ward-Prowse, Davis, Cork, Schneiderlin
  • Stoke: Adam, N'zonzi, Whelan, Whitehead
  • Sunderland: Vaughan, Cattermole, Gardner, Colback
  • Swansea: Britton, Ki, De Guzman, Agustien
  • Tottenham: Dembele, Parker, Livermore, Sandro
  • West Brom: Morrison, Yacob, Dorrans, Mulumbu
  • Wigan: McCarthy, Watson, McArthur, Crusat
  • West Ham: Noble, Diarra, Nolan, Diame

Not that many who are up to Chelsea's grade.

Looking at the every other team, it suggest we are not the only team to lose a key midfielder over this window (City, Spurs, Arsenal). Despite everything, Chelsea's double pivot does not seem that bad. We have Ramires and Oscar who can fill a need, not to mention the impressive Josh McEachran on loan. We may have lost Essien, but we still essentially have two midfield destroyers (Mikel, Romeu), and two deep lying playmakers (Lampard, Merelies) ready to play whenever needed. It offers good depth, and each one of these players is talented in their own right. Sure, an upgrade would be fantastic, but for now, this is what we have got. And until January, i'm happy with that,
