Consider yourself to be a football player. You've just represented your team at the Euro's and you've put in some good solid performances in a comparatively underperforming team. You are fairly unknown and are in player in a mid table team of your domestic league. Some big clubs are scouting you and have made bids. Now here's your choice.

You have three final options. It's upto you to decide who you join.

i) A top club which wants you as a backup. You're getting a good salary, and possibly lots and lots of trophies because this club is a top European competitor and has won several titles. However you're clearly second fiddle and you won't start too many games, possibly 20 starts per year in all competitions. The team will expect a performance which is good for a backup and you will have to deliver accordingly.

ii)A mid table club which is willing to let you be unconditional first choice. The team is financially well off, has good facilites but barring a lucky cup run, it's unlikely to win any kind of trophies. There will be high expectations bestowed upon you and you'd be expected to deliver top performances week-in week-out without exception. The pressure will be high as you will be first choice for that position.

iii) A lower table team, possibly one in the relegation battle. You'll have an adequate salary, decent facilities and the team will be such that you can be a standout performer with some effort. However staying in the top division is not guaranteed and you don't have a relegation release clause. There won't be too much pressure as the team in general won't be outstanding, however you have to deliver good enough performances to contribute to your teams survival in the top division.
