Kevin Gameiro's name was mentioned quite a few times when WAGNHers were discussing about potential ST signings. For those who are not accustomed to seeing him, here is a little profile. I'm no Stephen, so bear with me a bit
By the way, we have not been linked to Kevin Gameiro.
He's relatively young (25) and has been banging goals in L1 especially during his Lorient stay, where he scored 50 goals in 3 seasons, starting almost every single game.
There, the team and the philosophy was built to fit the former Strasbourg player's physical attributes, most notably his pace on the counter.
Cool thing is that he's no "clumsy oaf" technically. He's surprisingly good when on the ball, can dribble well and is an excellent finisher. He's not that tall (1m72), but is an above average jumper and header of the ball. However he's not a Giroud (or Drogba) type of player that can bring others into play effectively. He is more similar to a certain Fernando Torres, but perhaps faster and sharper in front in goal (if we compare him to the Chelsea Torres)
Gameiro is willing to work, always trying again and again. He can time runs perfectly (if the midfielders don't forget him). Also, he's decent on the wings.
So, he was one of the most consistent performers of L1, and his form prompted the Qataris to sign him up. With Antoine Kombouare in charge, he usually was the starting striker, with aerial threat Guillaume Hoarau playing second fiddle to him. However, the situation was reversed when Carlo first arrived, as he preferred Hoarau. Later on, Carlo played without a central striker, which limited KG's opportunities even more!
He scored more than 10 goals last season, and that is a respectable amount considering 2 facts: A) he didn't start every game 2) the team wasn't built to fit him, and the midfield often forgot him. The Nene-Pastore-Menez was too individualistic
It's a shame he and Morgan Amalfitano have been separated, their telepathic connection was glorious, with Amalfitano assisting and Gameiro scoring. KG simply missed the selfless play of his teammates at PSG.
Something that people forget is that Portugal contacted him a few years ago, with Carlos Queiroz being seduced by his profile (Portugal have/had shitty strikers, explaining why they naturalized Brazilian-born Liedson; he would have been an assured starter in my opinion). KG refused, saying he wanted to play for France, where the competition at the CF spot was really incredible.
He eventually got his chance under Blanc, who wanted to reconstruct the squad after the "Knysna fiasco" as the French media likes to call it. He did alright when selected, but caps stopped to come by when Carlo was the gaffer, Hoarau getting a few chances on the international stage at his place. Funnily enough, when Pastore was played as a false 9, neither Hoarau nor Gameiro were selected for the last few friendly matches and the Euros, despite the Remy injury.
So, what now for Gameiro? PSG have recently signed a world class striker in Ibrahimovic, and Carlo still is in the dugout. I can't see KG getting regular starts, which is understandable. In fact, it is certain he won't get playing time except against the really shitty Cfa/L2 team in the Cup, and maybe a few sub appearances here and there. I feel his talent/potential will be wasted there, and I'm sure he could produce a lot somewhere else.
He has been linked to a few French midtable clubs and Valencia. I think he'd do well at Valencia if they sell Soldado, but the best fit for him in my opinion would be Newcastle, especially if they play their 4-3-3. In my opinion he'd be a beast there if Ba/Cisse are sold/injured.
Call me cynical, but I'd rather have that dude than Torres. If a straight swap was possible, I'd take the opportunity in a second or so (nevermind the shirt sales). He'd thrive in a counter-attacking set-up and I think a good chemistry can be built with Hazard, Mata and co. However, I don't think we will be able to play the kind of football he prefers, so I'd rather have him go elsewhere to play regularly.
In an ideal world, we get Papiss Demba Cisse and Newcastle sign Gameiro! :P
