I work at Islands of Adventure in Universal and we get a lot of tourists. Inevitable we meet a lot of football fans and I've found that most Brits are shocked to find a fan with a decent knowledge of the game. Its a fun job and I've not had many bad days but today was possibly the greatest day I've worked. The day started with me meeting former New York Yankee and possible Hall of Fame catcher Jorge Posada. He said hi then walked away. Then I saw a face I recognized but couldn't quite peg. Once I heard him talk I realized it was Paul Merson, commentator from sky sports. I only really knew him as a commentator but the man he was with told me about how successful he was with arsenal and his run on the England national team. Apparently he's a big Chelsea fan despite his links with arsenal and Aston villa. Here are some highlights of the conversation
1.) I informed him that the English translation of Etihad is 'united' which he said he really wanted to use on the air so keep an eye out for it.2.) I told him to look into WAGNH as a great Chelsea blog (I expect to see graham, Kevin, stephen and our other authors contributing soon)
3.) our squad is not ready to win the major competitions but we are not far from it either
4.) He feels RVP will be out of arsenal but still in the prem before the start of the season (he never said he had a source, it was just his feeling knowing how the club has handled this type of situation before)
5.) Beck's should've been in the Team GB squad. Also he's been a good start but the mls will need more world renown players to achieve popularity. He also said there is some nice talent in the MLS but the development isn't strong enough to make European ready players
6.) We both agree that football in America could blow up to be one of the big sports but first Americans must buy into a sport where draws and low scores are common. Also we agree that the low scoring is a blessing to the sport since you never have any meaningless scoring
7.) Playing in a world cup is amazing but once the game starts its another game of football
8.) The amazement you feel at the world cup is only rivaled by the heartbreak of losing by penalties at a world cup
All in all I had a fantastic time talking with him and his friend. He was extremely polite posing for photos and giving autographs to anyone who asked. He told me about the 1998 Arsenal vs Liverpool championship decider saying he will never forget George graham running around screaming one minute when they needed a second goal.
