The day I golfed with a Liverpool fan

Most of you Chelsea fans have encountered a Liverpool fan at one point or another. Maybe while walking through the mall, or possibly at an actual sporting event. My interaction occurred while golfing at a course in Southern California.

I have lived in Los Angeles for over two years now. While here, I have encountered many fans of opposing teams. Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United and many others. To this date, all have been positive interactions. I ran into an Inter Milan fan at my local supermarket, where the near 60-year-old man congratulated me on Chelsea's Champions League victory (I was wearing my Drogba jersey at the time). He also stated that he was from Italy and that he liked Roberto Di Matteo, as do I.

Today was different. A good friend of mine and I were playing golf at a very busy course on this Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. Upon approaching the first tee box, we heard a blaring announcement from the PA at the clubhouse that we were being paired with two others. We waited for about five minutes, and nobody showed. So, we went ahead and tee'd off.

As we left the tee box, two older men (probably mid-40's or later) arrived in their golf cart. We shared introductions, and they proceeded to the tee box. One of the men was very friendly, while the other was not so much, but that was the end of the dialogue.

The first hole was a par-3, and we finished it quickly, despite my hacking to a 6. As we approached the second tee, the less friendly member of the forced pairing asked me, "Are you a big Chelsea fan?"

(By now, I should have mentioned that I was wearing my Chelsea practice jersey from last season.)

Anyhow, I responded, "Ya, do you like Chelsea?"

The less friendly man replied, "Hell no, I f***ing hate Chelsea!"

I said, "Who do you like?"

He answered, stating that he liked Liverpool. I retorted, "That sounds about right."

That was pretty much the total of our conversing with the less friendly Liverpool fan and forced playing partner.

His friend conversed with both me and my friend throughout the front nine, while his partner (who I should mention stood approximately 5'8" and weighed in excess of 300 pounds) stared at me with anger.

We did exchange a "nice shot" here and there, but that was it. It was clear that this man hated me from the moment that he saw my Chelsea jersey, and I find that hilarious.

The level of hatred by Liverpool fans of Chelsea is at an all time high. I have encountered this on the interwebs, but never mano-a-mano. This man reminded me of all the angry Liverpool fans that I used to see trolling ESPN Soccernet, which was one of the main reasons that I quit visiting the site (of course, poor reporting also didn't help either).

Anyway, the main point is that despite this unfriendly man hating Chelsea, and me because of it, I couldn't help but enjoy the thought in my head. Chelsea must be doing something right (maybe winning trophies not called the Carling Cup?) if the followers of one our fiercest rivals are this bitter that they cannot even socialize with the opposition on a golf course in Southern California.

In the end, the two forced partners, one friendly, one not (Liverpoolian) left us after nine holes. The friendly one offering parting words, as the unfriendly one (Liverpool) grabbed his bag from their cart and walked off toward the distant parking lot without uttering a word toward me or my friend.

Priceless.

P.S. - This is my first FanPost, and while not informative per se, I hope that somebody may enjoy it.
