Some thoughts on Chelsea's first pre-season game

Well, I think we are all satisfied after watching a pretty thrilling first game of the pre-season for the Blues but I just want to give my opinion on the players who participated out there tonight. I know it's just one pre-season game so of course this doesn't imply anything about the players' forms during the actual season.

Hilario- Good to see him still put in effort out there. Made a great stretch to deny a curler from Alvaro Fernandez and had a decent game for his standards but it doesn't really matter since we won't be seeing him much out there (hopefully)

Bane & Luiz- Both seemed comfortable at the centre of defense and weren't at fault for any of the goals. Good warm up for the pair but don't think Bane will be playing CB too much this season.

Chalobah- Seemed really uncomfortable tonight. His first touch got away from him a bit and he didn't seem to communicate that well with others. Ran into Bane and Benayoun a few times. Then again, he was out of position as he usually plays CB or in the middle of midfield.

Paulo Ferreira- Really offered nothing on both sides of the pitch but did give me a good laugh when he performed a few step-overs in the box during the opening minutes.

Mikel- Solid. Usual routine of breaking opposition play up and distributing it to players further up the pitch. Even had a nice 1-2 exchange with Hazard in the penalty box but ultimately resulted in nothing.

McEachran- Jekyll & Hyde performance from the young Englishman tonight. Perfectly weighted ball for Lukaku on the first goal and then practically assisted Montero on his first goal by turning the ball over right outside his own box. Did seem calm on the ball though and didn't let his error ruin the rest of the game for him.

Benayoun- A very meh performance. Got on the ball very little. Did nothing with it really but dribbled past a few on a run in the 1st half.

Marin- Loves to run, dribble, cut in and shoot. He is a great counter-attacking player. His debut goal was luckily deflected but worked hard the entire game and played a few nice passes, including a nifty back-heel. Also tracked back and stole the ball from Rosales to give a killer pass for Lukaku's second. Really good debut for the little German.

Hazard- What can I possibly say about this guy? He does things so perfectly and his play is borderline erotic. No scratch that, it is erotic. He's the type of player that makes things happen in your pants. Anyways, getting back to his play tonight. He was fantastic on his debut. His turns were so quick and beautiful and he knew what he was going to do before even getting the ball. A threat every time he got on the ball and even though the deflection helped his goal go in, the build up was all him. A quick turn, held off the defender, burst of speed into the box, cut in and hit it accurately. Will be an absolute joy to watch this season in the EPL.

Lukaku- Tbh, the Belgian did not do much. Yes, he had a brace but besides that he wasn't involved too much in the build up. With that being said, this fella is a beast. For lack of better terms, he bitched the Sounders defender on the first goal by just overpowering him. Did well with the second by evading the on-rushing goalie and tucking it in and rounding him. A real poacher's performance today. Let's just hope he doesn't get loaned out and plays a part for the first team this year.

Blackman- Seemed composed and didn't have to do too much after he came in at halftime.

Saville- Most likely the least known guy on the squad, he had a good game. Made a very important tackle when the Sounders had surrounded our penalty box. He's normally a midfielder, but he's left-footed so I guess RDM thought he'd fit in at LB, where he played at U-16 level, and did a good job at it. The game calmed down and besides the tackle, didn't have much to do out there.

Cahill- Solid block to deny Johnson a goal in the opening mins of the 2nd half. Besides that, did nothing although he did spray a few cross-field passes to Hutchinson who seems to have good chemistry with him.

Hutchinson- Didn't have much to do (besides ruffle his new Mario Gomez hairstyle) defensively but still tracked back and intercepted a pair of passes. Also, worth noting he showed his inner David Luiz by making a stellar run into opposition territory which unfortunately ended up in him shooting way over the bar.

"Toddy" Kane- Did nothing on defense as the Sounders attack had died out in the 2nd half but kept overlapping Ramires. Unfortunately, nobody really spotted him and he only received the ball a few times.

Essien- Seemed lively and up for it. Spread a few passes forwards and sideways and performed Mikel-esque duties by shutting down the Sounders midfield.

Lampard- Nothing to report here except one wayward shot and setting up KDB for a shot.

Kevin De Bruyne- KDB was really impressive. Maybe should have done better with his chance but overall seemed to fit in immediately. Played a wonderful curled pass across the field to Kakuta from a long way out. Seems like a very valuable addition to me and could possibly play anywhere in the band of three as he's great with both feet and he seems confident on the ball.

Kakuta- Tried to do way too much with the ball and looked terrible. Seemed uninterested and tried to dribble past defenders without any real conviction.

Ramires- The Blue Kenyan was full of running today, like always, but didn't really play that big a part in the 2nd. Was almost through on goal until the Sounders LB made a crunching tackle.

Lucas Piazon- Another impressive debut. Seems confident with the ball but didn't help that he was playing in a false nine-position. Much better as a second striker and had to come deep to receive the ball. Hopefully RDM doesn't put Piazon in this position again as he performs so much better when given the ball and support from players further up the pitch. Hopefully he will get some chances for the first team, either in the Carling Cup or Club World Cup.

So, that wraps it up. I might be doing this for the rest of the pre-season tour if anyone is interested. Just a quick heads-up to anybody here attending the Chelsea vs PSG game, I'll be there too with a 2002-03 kit so if you see me, make sure to say hi!
