Now that their contracts have expired, Chelsea Football Club have confirmed the departure of both Salomon Kalou and Jose Bosingwa. Neither is a surprise - Ron Gourlay had confirmed that both would be gone the week after the season closed, although they weren't high profile enough to get the sort of sending off that Didier Drogba, also out of contract, warranted.

It's very strange to me that three of the starting eleven from Chelsea's Champions League win against Bayern Munich are now off the team. Although neither Kalou nor Bosingwa is a starting calibre player for a good team, they still put in several years of service for the club, with Kalou in particular working hard and helping out despite essentially constant criticism. There was some suggestion that a new manager might be interested in retaining Kalou's services, but apparently that wasn't a route Roberto di Matteo wanted to go down, despite using him extensively during the last part of the 2011/12 season.

As it stands, Chelsea have lost three senior players and added two, and it's likely that we'll see more players added to both lists. The window is now open, so it's time for transfer season to really heat up.
