I've been in and out all week, and apparently I've missed a juicy new transfer rumor - according to newspapers in Kenya, Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama (who is Kenyan, hence the sources) is set for a move to England, with Chelsea invoked as a possible destination. If you're anything like me, you pretend the Scottish Premier League doesn't exist, because it's utterly, utterly terrible* and therefore you don't know much about this kid. The lowdown, such as it is, is after the jump.

*This is a recipe for Chelsea to draw Celtic in the group stages next year and somehow contrive to lose, I suspect. I'll run that risk.

Wanyama is 20 years old, and his primary position is as a 'destroyer' pattern defensive midfielder. He has everything you'd expect from a destroyer in terms of build and skills - he reads the game well, can tackle (rather too ferociously sometimes) and is good in the air as well. He's also known for his composure and solid passing, although he can be prone to some lazy errors in possession as well.

Wanyama made the move to Celtic less than a year ago after having spent three years in the Jupiler League with Beerschot, and he ended up making 29 starts for his current club, notching four goals along the way. At his age, he's nothing like the finished project, but his record looks reasonably comparable to an Oriol Romeu or something of that nature. Nothing is jumping out to me as indicative of a great box to box player, but I'll defer judgement to those who actually know him.

Anyway, his agent's been making noise about the potential of a move to a top team this summer, and apparently that means the Premier League. I've seen him connected more with the likes of Stoke City and West Ham United than Chelsea, but if the Blues want to snap him up (as some admittedly unreliable-looking sources are claiming), he'd fit in well with the current youth movement. Anything around £5M sounds about right - I don't think he's going to be a superstar or anything but it sounds like there's some potential there and the Blues can definitely afford to roll the dice.

Interesting factoids - Wanyama is the son of a Keynan international and the younger brother of McDonald Mariga, who plies his trade in the Serie A. I'm reasonably confident he'd be the first Kenyan player ever to play in the Premier League if Chelsea did end up signing him.
