Every once in a while there's a quality player who sees their contract run all the way down. Three seasons ago that type of thing allowed us to land Daniel Sturridge for a very minimal fee, and it's always worth scanning the free transfer list to see if there is a player who might add depth to the squad for no cost. The Premier League has today released a list of all players who will be available for a free transfer this summer that were registered to Premier League clubs last season, it can be found here.
The Chelsea contingent on this list includes 5 players. Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, and Jose Bosingwa come as no surprise to anyone here. Rhys Taylor should also come as no surprise considering the fact that he's likely the 7th choice keeper Chelsea have at the moment. Morko Mitrovic is a bit of a surprise, as he still had one season to go on his contract. It appears Chelsea are willing to let the youngster move on though, as he's nowhere near the top of the depth chart at even the reserve level.
There are also some interesting players listed from other teams in the league. Paul Scholes for whatever reason, but he's agreed to an extension that will see him remain at United for another year. I doubt he'd ever consider leaving anyway. Signing Ledley King would be even more trolling of the Spurs, the comedic value of that alone might be worth it. Zak Whitbread had an excellent season for Norwich, and while he'd be buried on the bench at Chelsea he'd certainly be a capable 4th choice CB. Pavel Pogrebnyak might be an interesting depth signing if we send Lukaku on loan as well, he's certainly not terrible. Personally I'd guess we don't touch anybody on this list, but it's food for thought none the less.
