John Terry Captaincy Row Sparks Fabio Capello's Resignation As England Boss

Photo

The John Terry racism saga has taken another bizarre turn today as Fabio Capello has resigned from his position as England manager. Capello had recently protested the Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy after his trial for the alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand was set for July - without consulting him - and it was pretty clear that neither the manager nor the FA were particularly thrilled with the situation.

While the FA are painting this as a fairly amicable separation, quotes attributed to the now-former manager portray a very different story, with Capello apparently claiming that he was insulted and undermined as manager and that removing Terry from the captaincy was the height of hypocrisy. Remember, this all came about from someone watching a Youtube video of John Terry shouting at Anton Ferdinand and reporting it to the police. It's astonishing that something so relatively small has managed to bring down both England's captain and her manager on top of that. What a crazy day.

It is, obviously, highly unlikely that whoever ends up managing the country (the hot favourite is, of course, Harry Redknapp) will be unlikely to reinstate Terry as captain. Hopefully this is all the push him needs to recover from international football and focus on Chelsea.

Crazy day.

Whoa shite!

just read that. Man… I mean, I know he was looking to be headed out soon anyhow, but goes to show that when your family isn’t a happy one, things don’t look up.

Not that the FA felt they had a ton of choice maybe, with Terry, but they really ought to have tried talking about it with Capello first, at least to give a heads up.

Definitely shocking with the Euro months away

But now that’s its in the books can we all agree that England need an English manager and the man for the job has got to be Arry…

by Mourinho on Feb 8, 2012 8:39 PM GMT reply actions

Ohhh

Didn’t realize that was possible. I sort of figured it was some type of conflict of interest, being that he could be managing opposition players in his club, or that he could have a bit of favoritism toward his own club players in the England squad.

Guus did double duty with us for a while

And I believe there is only one friendly between now and the end of the season anyway

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 8, 2012 8:49 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah

That was my original reaction as well. Not much going on between now and then anyway.

The other possibility is that they just won’t appoint anyone til the end of the EPL season.

You guys would love it!

Because then you’d have a buyer for Torres in the summer. ;) I’d like it, in the sense that he would stay in the league and we could really test if the almighty Benitez is the guy that could coax goals out of him. I wouldn’t like that it would be a direct rival, though. Hmm. But methinks that Adebeyor, Bale, and Modric would probably still be the main problems we would face.

Just wait until tomorrow

For the papers & online media to publish loads of stories demanding Terry withdraw from International duty or other such rubbish.

I'm expecting stories about how "sources have claimed"

That Mourinho will be moving to fill the soon-to-be-vacant Tottenham job.

by deg0ey on Feb 8, 2012 9:38 PM GMT up reply actions

Will Never Happen in a million years they can't afford to build the squad he wants.

Besides can’t you see the vultures circling over AVB’s head? Roman’s been at the training grounds twice in less than a week

by Mourinho on Feb 8, 2012 11:17 PM GMT up reply actions

Just to be clear

I was in no way suggesting that I think that will happen. It was my attempt at coming up with the kind of baseless speculation that the media love these days. I thought that was clear from my post, but apparently not.

Incidentally, I don’t think there is any danger of AVB leaving us in the next few months.

by deg0ey on Feb 9, 2012 10:26 AM GMT up reply actions

I wouldn't say that's impossible actually!

I think he is likely to be managing in England next year, Fergie won’t b gone by then, Liverpool won’t sack Dalgliesh, Arsenal are about the least suited team in the world for Mourinho, Roman and Jose didn’t get along at all well 1st time round so I don’t see either being keen to go down that road again. That leaves 2 possibilities, Man City and Spurs. I still think City will win the title this season and if they do I think Mancini will keep his job, if they don’t I would expect Mourinho to be managing City next season. Harry will probably take the England job in the summer leaving the Tottenham job available and assuming Mourinho leaves Madrid as expected and doesn’t end up at City then I think Spurs would be a highly possible destination.

I’m also not so sure about not being able to afford the squad he wants. Tottenham already have an excellent team and wouldn’t need much tinkering with as long as they can keep what they currently have! They proved last season that they can compete with the team Mourinho won the treble with at inter, player for player I think they are at a similar level-Inter have proved to be an average enough outfit without Mourinho as manager. Mourinho has a reputation as a cheque book manager but I think this is purely down to the time he spent big at Chelsea but what manager wouldn’t have? His time at Chelsea aside, he won Uefa cup and Champions league at Porto without spending big, he didn’t spend much in his time at Inter where the sale of Ibrahimovic covered the arrivals of Sneijder, Milito and Etoo- I think his average net spend there was about €20m a season, hardly extravagant. At Madrid all the crazy spending was done before he arrived, he has still spent on average about £40m a season there (which I doubt he would get at spurs) but many of his transfers such as Ozil €15m, Khedira €12m and Sahin €10m have been well within Tottenham’s budget. Basically I wouldn’t rule out the chances of Mourinho managing Spurs next season-they wouldn’t be his first choice club but there aren’t too many more likely destinations!

I'm so terribly gleeful about this

I hate everything about how England handles its national team. Fans ripping their own players, journalists who are just utter scum, the youth system, the FA, all of it.

I love that this has turned into such a steaming turd for the FA.

Am I weird to hope that Stuart Pearce gets the job over Redknapp?

I just don’t think Redknapp is what England needs. England needs a manager who will bring in the youth, and Pearce has been good with the U-21s.

England needs Redknapp to be on TV less often

Which would probably be the case if he were England manager. Therefore I hope he gets the job

by deg0ey on Feb 8, 2012 11:05 PM GMT up reply actions

But he'd be on camera in the stands during all the big English matches!

I’d rather see him a few times per year than all the time.

I feel Pearce will be the interim

Than Arry when the Prem is over. I don’t know how anyone can argue Redknapp isn’t the best for the job and the odds on favourite

I doubt there was anything long-term in reporting it.

I can't help but think this was JT's plan all along....

Shout racist abuse allegedly at Anton to have Capello sacked so that ‘Arry would become England manager and ruin Tottenham’s season. TOP FOUR SEALED!

Clever =/= Intelligent.

I’m personally quite intelligent, but I would in no way call myself clever. I also know several people who’d lose an I.Q. contest with a badger, but who are unbelievably crafty and inventive.

I’d say intelligence is Einstein, and clever is MacGyver. They’re not mutually-exclusive, of course, but I wouldn’t call JT clever. Not nearly clever enough Ocean’s 11 the Premier League, anyway.

Yeah..

How’s about that?! Harry goes to court and is up for England Manager contention… JT doesn’t even have his day in court yet and gets stripped of his role in the team. Funny, funny. Maybe Capello’s assertion of hypocrisy is right. Perfect timing, that “not guilty” verdict. A little too perfect? Muahahhaha!

Well

Rooney’s backed Harry, so it shall be done. Of course he does… Tottenham are creeping up behind them on the table ;) Haha… I wish it were all that interwoven and dramatic. The England NT is going to be my favorite new soap opera, it seems.

So long as we get CL football next season, the pigeon will continue to roost at WHL.

We're all angsting over at CFC. No consensus.

I think we’re all waiting to see if the other shoe drops first before we all go apeshit with speculation.

My first thought was that Poyet might be a fit...

He’s worked wonders at Brighton; quite a step up, granted, but I think he’s capable of doing a decent job.

I'm all for Chris Hughton.

But that’s mainly more due to the fact I think he’s a top guy than anything else. Like ability, or track record.

Capello - has a trophy with every team he's ever managed

’Arry – Zip, Zilch, Nada.
Makes perfect sense!
