On Booing Rio Ferdinand

Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

I'm sure you all heard the boos every time Rio touched the ball throughout Sunday's game against Man U. It took me a while to notice, perhaps because he didn't touch the ball much in the first half, but nevertheless it was there.

There are a number of theories about; that it was something to do with his twitter comments made a few days before the game was one of them. The truth is though that to all neutrals we're just booing the brother of a suspected race abuse victim.

Thankfully the club seem to be dealing with our racism charge a little better than Liverpool have, and that bullet in the post - while not looking great for the club - can be excused by the stupidity/madness of one individual. But for large sections of the home crowd to boo like that was really embarrassing - to me at least.

Chelsea fans have a bad time of it anyway. If we're not glory supporters (where's the glory though these days huh?), we're 'plastic' and have no passion and our stadium is silent, and now we're racists too.

I know there's such a thing as crowd mentality, but I'm not sure I'd have done the same if I was there to be honest.

What do you lot think? Was anyone there? Am I missing an important part of the story?

Well I think people just jumped at any chance, no matter how twisted,

To boo a united player. Realistically Terry might have been wound up and in a rage shouted something he might not necessarily agree with. Ferdinand stood up for his brother. I think people (including Ferdinand himself) forget about his refusing to take drug test fiasco. None of these guys are angels. Boo him for wearing red and being a dickhead IMO.

I think people are booing him in some twisted form of retaliation

For the grief that JT has been getting over something he may or may not have actually done.

I don’t agree with the general motives involved in the booing of Ferdinand, but the fact remains that he’s a fuckwit and, for that reason, I struggle to feel any sympathy for him.

I will boo him because

he supports his boy, the NE Patriot’s very own “Tim” Brady.

Saw that

He claims it was a joke. I claim that he’s a joke.

That is what I got of it

Of couse, pundits that don’t know much better were claiming it was just because he was related to Anton. Booing Anton would be stupid. Booing Rio for opening his mouth when he shouldn’t, then being so bold as to come out and talk about not/wanting to be captain makes sense to me.

Quite frankly, I can’t believe people didnt just boo him whenever he got the ball before. The guy is on the top of my list of footballers I’d like to punch in the face. People boo Cole for being himself… why not boo Rio for the same?

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 6:47 PM GMT up reply actions

I was there and the people were booing him because he is twat mostly.

It stems from the Anton issue and his comments on twitter and other media about JT and the England captaincy.
I thought the Rio Ferdinand, your brothers a cunt chant to be very close to a line but this is the nature of British football grounds. It’s tribal and the fans will defend their own regardless.
People were also booing Rooney most the game, because he is a whiny arrogant twat and Most of the United team were abused in some way, maybe the Media are making too much of the race thing and remember that most fans hate players from other teams for a multitude of reasons.

by ChelseaMariner on Feb 8, 2012 6:23 PM GMT reply actions

Didn't hear the chant you mentioned

But I would put that in the category of “dumb things to chant that don’t help your cause or team”. The booing is something I am totally okay with.

If Ashley Cole threw up the race card, we could get every opposing fan banned from the EPL!

He has got to be so used to the booing that I seriously think the opposing fans should start cheering for him, to throw him off his game.

I would have booed him too

because of the unnecessary BS JT has had to put up with every day since the alleged incident. JT was punished by the FA by losing the captaincy before he was found guilty of any wrongdoing and then Ferdinand made his comments about the situation. Thats when he got involved in the situation. It’s not because of his race. It’s because he opened his mouth when he didn’t need to

Wait.

Rio’s black??

I thought he’d just been in a caravan fire.

The English media are in bed with Manu.

They make a massive deal on anything negative about John Terry, but Rio is hero despite refusing to take drug tests? Ryan Giggs actually fu*ked his brother’s wife and Terry is the bad guy for a one night stand with Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend. Terry is far from an angel but the rush to paint him as the worst of the worst while Manu players get a pass (or pretty close to it) just makes me ill.

Speaking of which

what should I make of all this Stuart Pearce stuff? I’ll agree that it is old news and happened in a time where racism was not in the process of being actively eradicated from the sport, but seems to me that if people consider Terry’s statement as a racial slur worthy of punishment, that Pearce’s, too, should be seen as the same. Not saying they maybe shouldn’t appoint him as interim manager, but it sure does stink of hypocrisy, they way everyone involved in Terry’s case is coming out to say they’ve moved on from Pearce’s folly.

The whole thing was cringeworthy

and if you think it’s coz Rio is a fuckwit then ask yourself why he has never been booed before at Stamford Bridge. He’s certainly never been singled out like he was now and when all things are considered one can only conclude that it’s because he’s Anton’s brother (who BTW we also booed at QPR). In fact I bet we’ll be right back talking about this after Anton gets booed and is subjected to more you know what you are chants. or maybe not coz thez an awful lot of blind eyes here.

Lets also not forget that Rio’s probably right about the trial being put back til June. I would rather the whole thing was done and dusted over the couple of weeks like Harry’s trial and we all got on with things. But no, we all have to go through months of this with plenty of fall out in the mean time.

The club has handled it better than Liverpool but that’s been despite AVB, who first said JT should not be questioned because he’s England captain. Then said he would back him WHATEVER the outcome, then said Anton HAS to shake JTs hand and finally claimed not to hear the booing of Rio. He hasn’t stooped as low as Kenny but this isn’t the best way to deal with it.

by Mr L Coors on Feb 11, 2012 2:11 PM GMT reply actions

And what did he say on Twitter? Words to the effect that

he was frustrated the date had been put back? Is that wrong? Coz I’m betting that everyday he has to field questions about this issue.

Did he swear? Is it aimed at JT?

The fact is we have enough to contend with re the image of our club and as a fan base without adding the label of ‘enforcers of stupid comments’ on twitter made by someone directly affected who we probably shouldn’t even be following! I suspect the OP is worried about that aspect.

Maybe you’re right and our fans had a legitimate reason to boo, however lets not argue next time we feature in the list of worst fans/clubs.

by Mr L Coors on Feb 12, 2012 10:31 AM GMT up reply actions

I was referring to the length of the Reknapp trial. 2 weeks

and it’s all over with. The legal authorities have the ultimate blame over that. This was a mag court so I’m fairly sure if all had been ok with it the whole thing could have been wrapped up by end of next week.

If I was JT I would relish a quick two week trial asap to clear my name.

by Mr L Coors on Feb 12, 2012 9:57 AM GMT reply actions

Not sure how you're going to keep arguing this. Terry's trial hasn't even begun yet!

While the media hasn’t hounded ‘Arry to the extend they have hounded JT, allegations of corruption have hung over Redknapp’s head for quite some time. Remember when he got ARRESTED in 2007? Remember how the FA didn’t consider him for the vacant England position then BECAUSE of all that brouhaha?

(Well, of course not, because ‘Arry is now the media’s darling, while JT is…well…JT.)
