These are my favourite kinds of analyses. Carefree Chronicles does his usual sterling work on Manchester United's three goals in their comeback against Chelsea

I wholeheartedly disagree with absolving Ivanovic on the last goal

He did not close Giggs down all the way. Made all the difference in the world.

Luiz let Doucharito wonder free, yes. We can chalk that up to miscommunication, or Hernandez’s anticipation (there is a reason he’s a world class poacher), or simply an error by Sideshow…but if Ivan doesn’t allow the easy cross, we get away with it.

by DPeezy on Feb 7, 2012 6:42 PM GMT reply actions

That's fine...

… you can make that argument.

by CareFreeChronic on Feb 7, 2012 7:01 PM GMT up reply actions

Said it elsewhere

but I agree about the cross not being defended against well. I was yelling at my television wondering why the hell whoever it was in blue wasn’t putting any pressure on the player in red. I didnt know who was who until well later (that is what I get for trying to watch the game while doing several other things at once).

by alynne4307 on Feb 7, 2012 7:04 PM GMT up reply actions

Also, this should be required reading for all the AVB-substitution-critics

Because while Romeu had a terrible day, it was an obvious substitution to make, having seen the buildup to both penalties. Perhaps it was a goal too late (although what are the odds of two penalties with 10 minutes?), but it was most certainly the correct move to try to solidify the midfield.

(Although I would’ve liked to see a Lukaku for Torres gamble at the end.)

by DPeezy on Feb 7, 2012 6:50 PM GMT reply actions

I read somewhere

that he wanted to put Romeu in earlier, maybe after the first penalty… not sure if he was warming up or something or where the writer got the impression though. But for whatever that source of info that I can’t remember is worth, there is that.

by alynne4307 on Feb 7, 2012 7:00 PM GMT up reply actions

That's exactly the point..

… I made in my match analysis. Rooney was given too much space and Romeu was supposed to be the answer. But he had a bad day.

by CareFreeChronic on Feb 7, 2012 7:02 PM GMT up reply actions

Also we dropped deep but then tried to score another goal.

We never slowed down the tempo of the game and we barely had consistent possession. I mean we swapped the ball with united plenty but they wanted the game to be frantic because they needed to score. We just needed to calm it down a bit.

by Famouscfc on Feb 7, 2012 7:53 PM GMT up reply actions

What are the odds of 2 penalties in 10 min?

With utd 3-0 down and Howard Webb refereeing I’d say the odds were about evens!

by conorjmartin on Feb 7, 2012 10:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Who was at fault for the 3 goals?

1st goal-Sturridge, Evra was too clever for him and drew the foul in a position where the danger wasn’t that great!
2nd goal- Howard Webb, simply a poor decision, Welbeck should have been booked for simulation, he was anticipating the challenge but when Ivanovic pulled out he went out of his way to make contact with the defender, basically cheating pure and simple!
3rd- Ivanovic for not closing down the cross was the main culprit. to a lesser extent Luiz for loosing Hernandez but the forwards movement was excellent as always!

by conorjmartin on Feb 7, 2012 10:36 PM GMT reply actions

I've actually seen a few people say that the penalty was soft, but not a dive.

It looked to me like Welbeck kicked his leg out in the direction of Bran in an attempt to trip over him. Obvious dive, even if he was contacted, since he sought it out.

by Cablinasian on Feb 8, 2012 12:13 AM GMT up reply actions

I would go farther and say

the first penalty was far from certain too. Danny has barely touched Evra. I was starting to hate Evra earlier but this has only increased my feelings. But to be fair and balanced, Danny did a similar thing in another game recently, so what goes around comes around…

by MrkS on Feb 8, 2012 1:49 AM GMT up reply actions

All in all

it’s all Torres’s fault :-): should he had burried his chance we wouldnt be talking about this.

by MrkS on Feb 8, 2012 3:10 AM GMT up reply actions

Well that's unfair.

No wonder people get into fights over Drogba vs. Torres – you’ve taken one moment into isolation from the rest of the game, ignoring all of the other factors that contributed to United’s equaliser.

by TPalmer on Feb 8, 2012 10:12 AM GMT up reply actions

I think they were kidding

at least I thought I saw the same user posting more optimistic comments about him in another thread.

I could be wrong, though… wouldn’t be the first person to have that opinion here :)

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 6:13 PM GMT up reply actions

I had thought it was Luiz who let Hernandez run free. His movement in the box is amazing.

Doucharito is an enigma. How can someone look so good in the opponent’s box, yet look like a pub footballer outside of it?

by Valens on Feb 8, 2012 2:21 AM GMT reply actions

I can't totally put my finger on it

but I really dislike Chicharito. it isn’t just because he is ManU. Like, I probably prefer Rooney over him. As a person and player. Maybe I am just too American in my soccerness that I cannot handle it with the rivalry? I mean, I’ve barely paid much mind to that rivalry, but he just irks the crap out of me. I think part of it is that he looks like CR7’s mini-me, in my opinion.

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 3:40 AM GMT up reply actions

That's cool.

He could be on the team. Wouldn’t change the fact that he irks me.

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 6:15 PM GMT up reply actions

but after a few (or 10)

Crucial goals, he might stop irking you :)

by dojothecat on Feb 8, 2012 10:11 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

I dunno

its his face. Something about it makes me wanna punch him. Sort of like Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo. There are probably others that I am not thinking of right now. If I just saw Landon Donovan and he wasnt on my National Team and stuff, I’d probably punch him, too. This is all punching them in my dreams, of course… I am not really that violent.

There are some people that you just never want on your team. Like my OSU Buckeyes coach now… ugh. Makes me sick to even recognize Urban as such. It’s totally foolish, but it just wont change.

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 10:55 PM GMT up reply actions

There's something horribly wrong about the contrast of his face.

He just looks “wrong” for some reason. It might be his eyes, but I can’t quite tell why his face makes me want to put an axe through it.

He sort of has weird eyes, doesn't he?

I was gonna say it in the last comment, but refrained. They are almost like Ozil’s or Dempsey’s eyes, but not. They’re weird and I can’t explain them. Maybe he sort of has no eyelids? Is that it? And his teeth are too white and perfect. People with a lot of teeth seem to bother me frequently (that’s Suarez’s problem).

He sort of looks like if Bruno Mars and CR7 had a baby.

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 11:39 PM GMT up reply actions

far be it from me to question such valid reasons :)

But if you read about Chicharito and his fam (particularly his quotes after signing w man u) you’d see he is about as solid a human as you can get. Prob the only united player I’ve ever respected.

Giggs on the other hand, has really weird eyes. Not to mention the grizzled/smug look is much more infuriating knowing this is a man who had an affair w his brother’s wife.

by dojothecat on Feb 9, 2012 12:17 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Part of it is probably a little to do with me

being a USMNT fan, and he, being a really good player for our biggest rival.

I don’t doubt he’s a good little apple. And I definitely know it’s silly on my part, but I just can’t shake that feeling whenever I see him, lol. I figure everyone has their player or players like that.

Giggs is a little strange looking. Lots of folks on ManU’s squad are. I mean, Rooney? Nani looks sort of like MJ, to me. Wellbeck has some Kid and Play hairstyle. They are kind of a weird looking bunch, aren’t they?

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:11 AM GMT up reply actions

Nooo

I mean, he does look like a child, most of the time, especially when he gets hurt and stuff on the field. I kind of want to give him a lollipop and tell him everything will be okay, and get his mommy to kiss his booboo, lol.

But he’s still mini-Ronaldo, to me. Maybe it’s the manscaped-looking brows?

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:13 AM GMT up reply actions

Well then

Here’s a face for you to punch:

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:21 AM GMT up reply actions

Chicharito doesn't pull faces like that!

That is the face of one unlikable fella never found him all that attractive because of it.

Chicharito doesnt do that face… but when I was looking for comparison material, I got tired of looking at CR7 taking up a full page of my browser with all his grossness, and so I just posted the most punch-able photo.

There’s something about the proportion or how they go together that I find unbelievably creepy.

Yes

definitely. I’d like someone with that goal average, but that also adds a bit more to the field and team. Hmm…. so many options.

But he definitely was well worth his bounty.

The sad part is that I was thinking about this on my walk home from work

… just strolling along, trying to dodge dog shit that people can’t be bothered to pick up off the side walk, and thinking “What IS it?!?!?! Why is his face SO WEIRD?!?!”

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:15 AM GMT up reply actions

If I knew, I would tell you, lol.

That is precisely what is bothering me so much. It just doesn’t work for me somehow…

Maybe his eyes are too big for his head? Ugh. This is frustrating. Mostly because it bothers me so much, I can’t Google or Wiki the answer, and it really has no actual bearings on my life.

Hmm

For me? Luiz is adorable and endearing in personality, and I like his hair, and he has an excellent body. But he wouldn’t go in my typical “gorgeous” pile. Cute, definitely.

Also, the irony in my statements above is that I think Chicharito looks like a little boy, but most people think the same of Torres (or worse…). Diff’rent strokes.

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:57 AM GMT up reply actions

Dos Santos

one of them. Or both of them. Someone of them was really good this past summer. I thought he(they?) lit up the Gold Cup and friendly games a bit. Can’t for the life of me remember who it was, hahaha. I suppose that is why I associate Mexico’s NT with Chicharito.

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 3:46 AM GMT up reply actions

I blame Torres

:p

but seriously, great analysis as usual. I agree with you on the first 2 goals but for the third goal, the ENTIRE team and the bench are to blame not just Luiz. We can’t call ourselves a World class team and concede those kind of goals. Essien and Meireles should have pressed harder, Romeu should have been deeper (I sometimes wonder if he is afraid of our box 18), Ivanovic should have closed down faster, Luiz should have done better but most importantly the front three should have joined in in actively pressing for the ball! AVB needs to get his tactics right or I fear for us…

by Iced O on Feb 8, 2012 7:39 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

It's a trademark 2011-12 Chelsea team error!

It seems like we’ve shipped a lot of goals where many players made small defensive errors that would normally have no influence on the match, but came together into one giant defensive mess.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Feb 8, 2012 8:55 AM GMT up reply actions

Butterfly effect

That’s reaching a bit. You can blame the whole team for any goal, really, it just depends on how far back in time you want to take the causation. Maybe if AVB stepped out of bed with his right foot instead of his left, that wouldn’t have gone in.

Valencia made a great overlapping run on; that’s very hard to defend and Essien/Malouda did “ok”. Rooney’s resulting shot was well saved by Cech. The true mistakes, the ones that really mattered, start from there.
