Talking Yossi Benayoun

BANGKOK, THAILAND - JULY 24: He can tackle too, unlike others. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

This discussion is going to be interesting, because I'm not entirely sure how much Benayoun pleases/angers (delete as appropiate) Chelsea fans. Yossi Benayoun is a player that really has slipped under the radar since joining Chelsea in the summer transfer window of 2010 as Ancelotti's second major signing. At a measly price of £5.5m million he was seen as a bargain replacement for the outgoing Joe Cole.

Unfortunately, despite a bright start for the Blues, including scoring one of six neat goals against Wigan, he ruptured his tendon in September playing against Newcastle in the Carling Cup - he didn't return until the 9th April against Wigan, and this really was too late to have any sort of impact, despite optimism he may have been the one to pour rain on Fernando Torres' goal drought.

Then Carlo Ancelotti was given the boot at the end of the season and in came Andre Villas-Boas, who promised a clean slate for all the players. Despite coming up with what surely has to be the biggest waste of a spectacular goal (it was in pre-season) and generously donating the number ten shirt to Juan Mata, he was sent across London to rivals Arsenal, who signed him on loan for the season, where he would go on to fulfill the same bench warming role he would have at Chelsea, although the Gunners probably offered him more oppurtunities.

As it turns out, at this point of the season, Benayoun's really had any sort of decent time on the pitch. He's only made five starts, and only one of these has come in the Premier League. Despite this, he's managed to score three goals (including a crucial winner against Aston Villa) and set up one goal. Considering that in playing in fringe games he would have played with fringe players, and when these include Marouane Chamakh even Xavi would struggle to get some assists. WhoScored.com (which, incidentally, is an excellent site) has ranked his average 'score' for the season at 6.39, which is decent numbers, although very inconclusive.

So Benayoun's had a fractured career since moving on from Liverpool. What's this got to do with anything? Well, considering that Chelsea weren't keen on making any signings in January due to inflation (wonder how they worked that out), and having lost one of their "creative" attackers in Nicolas Anelka, the question has been begging at me for days: should we have bought Benayoun back from loan?

Star-divide

Now obviously, there's a lot to consider. Firstly, I'm pretty sure both parties have to accept a termination of any loan (let me know if this is wrong) and so we have to consider whether Arsenal would really want to let Benayoun come back. Despite his relative lack of game time, he actually represents a key part of the Arsenal squad in providing cover in positions the Gunners are reasonably flimsy. Gervinho and Theo Walcott only have Andrei Arshavin* and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (who was completely untested before his recent performances) to deputize should one of them be absent.

*Think about that. Andre Arshavin.

So in this sense, had one of the two first-choice gone down injured, Benayoun is a decent option to have replacing them. On the flipside though, now Anelka's gone, and Kalou's actually being allowed to play football, for the Ivory Coast, Chelsea don't have a lot of whole depth in the wide positions. Hence why Mata has had to play on the left so often despite clearly being more suited to the center, and hence why Ramires has had to a few games on the right wing.

Secondly, Benayoun simply represents a decent option in terms of his attributes. His main strengths are his passing and eye for creativity, something that many fans are craving for at present. He may not have been a success, but it would have been nice to have that option. Also, in games where a bit of experience and tactical positioning is required (i.e: when Sturridge doesn't need to be on the pitch), Benayoun more than fills that brief, as evidenced by his success under tactically-focused Benitez and Ancelotti's remarks when he signed the Israeli:

"Joe Cole is quicker than Benayoun but Yossi is better tactically. He understands what I tell him. Yossi is a very intelligent player"

Benayoun's intelligence leads to him being a very versatile player, with the option of playing anywhere in an attacking band of midfielders. In this he'd also be an extremely useful option in enabling Mata to move centrally, or giving Juan a little rest.

You still have to consider the negatives however. Firstly it needs to be remembered that, as we know, Benayoun is a pretty injury-prone player. Also, at thirty-one he hardly represents anything of the youth-driven movement Villas-Boas wants to implement at Chelsea. Finally, the fact that Benayoun even moved to Arsenal in the first place suggests that all was not that well between player and club; but we could have also have received a nice financial reimbursement too. We don't know.

Oh, and I nearly forgot this, tweeted after the 5-3 match.

So in essence, Benayoun remains an interesting figure. Perhaps the option to terminate his loan was never an option, but it's always fun to discuss something other than Torres vs. Drogba. Your opinions below...

Very interesting

Appreciate the thought thats gone into this story and I think there would have been no harm in strengthening ourselves whilst weakening a direct rival if we had the option of terminating the loan

I was thinking about this idea all day, couldn't believe no one considered it.

This story nearly never got finished; supervising teacher was very “interested” in what I was writing!

Meant to include that point of weakening a direct rival.

He isn't coming back

My guess is that in the last week of transfer window, Chelsea were becoming confident about landing Modric and wanted to use Benayoun’s slot for Modric. They were trying to sell Yossi but Wenger would have offered too less. All this would have definitely broken down Yossi’s relationship with the club. In the end when no alternate buyer came forward I think Chelsea agreed to a loan and Arsenal wanted to add to their depth. The Nasri transfer was also confirmed very late. My doubt is how do Chelsea plan to sell him for anything higher in the coming window? I think they are just hoping that Arsenal will really need and hence use Benayoun and thus will offer a higher price in the next window. However that doesn’t seem to be happening.

Not true

Yossi was unhappy with playing time anyway, and upon Matas arrival he knew he had to leave. In hindsight it’s easy to say that we could still use him, but before hand AVB probably thought Mata and Yossi were 2 very similar players and could only fit 1 in his team.

No thanks.

He is not that good.

And the fact that Piers Morgan loves him makes me want him even less

My guess is that, even though Yossi is technically on loan, it's of the more permanent variety

Benayoun is done in Chelsea blue. The way the brass went about his ‘loan’ and his subsequent subtleties have all but assured us of this.

I don't think he is Chelsea quality but

He’s better than Malouda and Kalou.
What baffles me is that we’ve given him to Arsenal, our biggest competitor for 4th.

by AndrewMcF on Feb 7, 2012 3:37 PM GMT reply actions

I think you're being generous on Arsenal there!

I’m more worried about Newcastle than them, even Liverpool worry me more!

by conorjmartin on Feb 7, 2012 3:53 PM GMT up reply actions

But Liverpool can defend!

It has only been their surprisingly poor home form that has held them back so far, they have been good on the road and they proved in big games against city and utd that they can still compete with the best in the league when it matters. I also feel Liverpool are capable of putting a run together, I just don’t think Arsenal are good enough to do that!

by conorjmartin on Feb 7, 2012 7:05 PM GMT up reply actions

It's mainly the fact they've only scored 28 goals in 24 games this season

We’ve been pretty shit at finishing, but we’ve still averaged over half a goal per game more than Loliverpool. Home form isn’t the main culprit, not being able to score anywhere is. Being able to defend is great, but averaging about 1 goal per game isn’t going to get you very far.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 7, 2012 7:16 PM GMT up reply actions

True just looked at the table there!

They actually have more points at home than away, less away points than us 2!I think I should check evidence before posting in the future!

by conorjmartin on Feb 7, 2012 7:48 PM GMT up reply actions

He's not a similar player to Kalou at all

And the amount of hate Kalou gets around here is criminal. He’s one of the best backup forwards in the premier league.

For real!

Maybe you should send him to Arsenal too…

I'd honestly really like to have him

we’ll send you Bendtner in his place, deal?

Seems like a model professional just like Yossi too.

Ugh

you can keep Bendtner… and play him too. That will even out the quality players we keep sending your way!

I know I am biased

but I’d take Torres over Bendtner… the latter just wastes opportunities… at least while Torres wastes the ones he gets, he may create a couple of others here and there. Also… on the totally superficial front, Bendtner released some clothing line or cologne or some crap like that in one of the most horrid ways. Some terrible outfit, wore a snake, and was seen petting a stuffed tiger or something. He is just weird as fahk. If I am gonna take a weird striker that thinks a lot of himself, I’ll take Balotelli or something.

by alynne4307 on Feb 7, 2012 5:22 PM GMT up reply actions

And also...

clearly superficial judgements that take place on things outside of the game are the best way to rate players ;) I kid, I kid. But seriously… keep Bendtner.

That's right!

You can’t have him back! I really like him.

It's sad and one of the reasons why I now dislike Torres

Kalou has contributed a LOT MORE THAN Torres EVER will for Chelsea but gets no credit for his efforts. Mikel and him are insulted and hated for no reason… Yet Torres is praised and defended when he’s not done jack…

The Nigerian Perspective!

Yossi is an interesting case

I think he just became the victim of a numbers crunch this past fall. I can see him being a valuable bench piece for the squad next season as some roster spots open up, having him back in Cobham will be nice this summer when we’re looking for big names. He’s also probably re-established enough value that we could get a smaller sum for him if we tried to sell him. It’s a shame we don’t have him on the bench, but I don’t think we really had any option to recall him in January without Arsenal’s consent.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 7, 2012 4:28 PM GMT reply actions

I got the feeling...

Yossi didn’t impress in the summer, and that was why they went the loan route. But only doing a loan means they had an option to see him perform in different circumstances so they can decide if he may suit the team. I would be lying if I said I thought Yossi was the solution to creativity in the midfield for Chelsea. In the summer, he appeared to kind of run around aimlessly with the ball more than I thought he created opportunities. But I figured a good part of that was that he really hadn’t much in the way of minutes for Chelsea, so he was probably a little rusty. With the direction that Chelsea is headed in playing style, he could be a good bench option to rest Mata, and now he’s getting some time so he can get his legs back.

by alynne4307 on Feb 7, 2012 5:18 PM GMT reply actions

Hmm

There were pretty mixed opinions, I thought. Some people raved about him running circles all around the opposition. Others, like myself, thought he was sort of running like a chicken with his head cut off, at times. He didn’t strike me as being as fluid with the rest of the team… he sort of looked like he was doing one thing and the rest were doing another. But Chelsea had only really begun their makeover then, so he could be a better fit to a faster tempo now. And again, I think that he needed some minutes, and so I was glad to see him get some even if on loan, albeit, not entirely happy with the team we chose to lend him to ;)

by alynne4307 on Feb 7, 2012 7:09 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm with you..

…he just looked lost on the pitch. I think people made the mistake of his running around every where as “damn he looks good out there” running around and such. But didn’t really clue into the whole story that he wasn’t providing much of anything. I wasn’t at all surprised when we loaned him out. And was actually quite happy about it.

He is definitely done playin for us

But, we could have used him all year. He always passes forward and does so quickly, intelligently, and with few mistakes. His directness and creativity would have come in handy a dozen times this season.

I think Yossi is super. He should be at Chelsea as cover for Mata. We need to give him the odd game off, and Yossi was the best suited for filling in. IMO.

Pre-season playing time

AVB obviously liked him as a player in pre-season because of the playing time he was getting, it seems that there must have been a bust up between yossi and AVB because for the very reason of squad cover there wouldn’t seem any other reason to loan him out, it would also explain the tweet(s)
