How Long Will We Be Without John Terry, Anyway?

LONDON, ENGLAND - JANUARY 08: Raul Meireles, winded, completely ignores stricken Chelsea captain John Terry as he tries to catch his breath. What a [redacted]. (Photo by Paul Gilham/Getty Images)

John Terry's knee injury keeps sounding worse and worse. The captain has been absent for two matches in a row after finally getting some treatment for the knee problem he sustained against Portsmouth in early January, but apparently that may not be the extent of the time he misses. Buried in one of the billions of articles about Terry and the England captaincy is this line from Martin Samuel:

Short-term, the diagnosis on his knee injury is not encouraging, with fears he may be out for three to four weeks, removing him from England’s friendly match against Holland at Wembley on February 29.

Star-divide

As a quick reminder, Chelsea play the following matches between now and February 29th:

The games against Everton and Napoli are particularly annoying ones for Terry to be missing out on, and with the result very much in doubt at both Goodison Park and the Stadio San Paolo I'm not sure how much I trust Gary Cahill to deputise for the captain. Hopefully this is just a false alarm - I really wasn't expecting him to be missing for that long when he first took time off to deal with the 'bone oedema' but his absence from the squad against United is preeeetty ominous.

Get well soon please*!

*Goes for Ramires as well.

Before the game they asked AVB if he would miss some of his bigger players

and the mentioned Terry, Cole and Lampard. But I was thinking… Ramires is the player I’m missing most…

If yesterday's game is any indication of what life without JT

Is gonna be like I’m not worried thought Cahill, with the exception of the foul on Welback had a SOLID game as did David Luiz. Luiz has been great in 2012….A year to settle in and now he’s beasting…

If Cahill can play like he did yesterday...

…apart from the first fifteen or twenty minutes, I am less worried than I would be otherwise. Big if, though.

It seems I (and most of us) have been bit harsh on Cahill before he signed and I'm glad he is proving us wrong.

IMO, Gary had an excellent game against Manure and could have easily been our hero that day, (Had he score our 4th goal)…
And sideshow is starting to play sensibly…. Except the last Manure goal, I think he was brilliant too.

Michael Cox had an article

Where he mentioned that Cahill’s style (but not necessarily ability) suits his partnership with either Terry or Luiz.. And tht it shd work better than the other possible CB combos

Hmm

I was thinking that a bone bruise sounded pretty harmless… until I remembered that I’ve had them. Nearly a fracture, is what they were in my case. Granted, mine were in a totally different area (rib cage), but I imagine that the knee could be a pretty tough spot to deal with one, being that it is a joint and all.

Somebody get that man some vitamin D and calcium supplements!

I had bone bruises on my both of my shins about three years ago.

I tripped going up stairs at home and I still have dents in the bones, but they weren’t broken.

Funny how we can get them from such simple things.

Mine? Coughing (also managed to break a rib doing this) … also fractured my foot while walking recently. That is when my new doctor determined I was vitamin D deficient. Whattaya know? And now we know why it was probably best I didnt play a sport involving the potential to run into things in recent years.

Though, I’m certain Terry is in much better physical condition than myself, and probably has all kinds of crazy treatments going on for something as seemingly simple as this.

Weirdly, I actually take large Vitamin D supplements, and did even then.

I’ve been told I actually have really strong bones. My house has old, wood steps with a lip on them, rather than just plain square edges. One day, I was going up them[ much too quickly] and didn’t quite get enough purchase on the step above, so I only half made it to the next step and came down on the edge with my shins. I could easily have broken my legs, but I got away with just bone bruises.

Putting Cahill in the firing line

See if he steps up. Were gonna miss JT’s leadership most when we go to Italy.

I hope that's an overestimation. Still, if Cahill keeps performing like he did against United (or better)

I wouldn’t be too worried about it. The Cahill-Luiz partnership looks solid for the most part (I know it’s only been one game).

I don't know, maybe I'm just not as convinced by Cahill as others

I didn’t think he was particularly great v. ManU.

He needs get to blending with the team fast. Our communication out there on Sunday was at times horrendous. With both him and Ivanovic out there, we have half a defense (+Romeu) barely talking to each other.

I remember being impressed by his tackling stats at Bolton (as in how few he had to make, which I like to equate with quality defensive positioning), but after seeing his attempts on Sunday, I’m inclined to think that he’s just not very good at them and thus rather avoids them as much as he can. Of course, the best part is that his “tackle” on Welbeck has not even been recorded in any of the match stats.

But fine, we got him for his aerial ability, right? 0-for-2 in headed clearances and 0-for-1 in aerial duels on Sunday. Not. So. Good.

And seriously, I know we play zonal and all, but how about you pick up the flipping center forward for the opposing team when we’re defending to the death instead of just yelling at the 20-year-old kid. Ivanovic was there to try to cut out he cross (of which he did a shitty job, but that’s a story for another day).

Thanks for confirming..

It was Bran defending the cross (I have yet to rewatch that part of the match). I can’t guarantee he could have blocked the following events all together, but I really thought he gave Giggs way too much room to operate with. While he made some good clearances, he was definitely part at fault for that last goal. That was why DL got my MotM vote. DL had a few moments where I got frustrated, but not as many as I had with other folks.

I didn’t think Cahill was great, but it didn’t feel it was a bad debut, especially getting put on in a big game. He put in a decent effort. I also looked back at his tackle several times and feel like it was a good call.

I really cannot understand why Ivan simply stopped short on Giggs and let him cross freely

He closed Giggs down to within like 5-7 yards, put his arms behind his back, and let Giggs make perfect contact under no pressure. Yes, crossing is a low percentage thing, but Giggs is certainly one of the better players at it, historically. I’m not surprised one bit that he managed to squeeze his cross into the yard of space between Ivan’s outstretched foot and the touchline.

And again it’s the whole communication and awareness. Cahill was covering. If Ivan closes down Giggs and the Welshman does beat him with a trick or two, Cahill is there to cover. What Ivan did, the passive stand-off was ultimately just lazy and very much Bosingwa-esque.

Agreed.

I yelled at my television mucho. It was like begging for them to score, never mind daring them to.
