Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

John Terry To Miss Everton Match

I'm sure we'd all like to wallow in self pity after the 3-3 draw against Manchester United, but we have to keep looking forward, and we've got another important match coming up. Andre Villas-Boas isn't exactly give us good news - John Terry hasn't recovered from his knee injury, and nor has Ramires. However, there's a chance we get reinforcements anyway:

AVB reports that Lampard and Mikel have a chance of being fit for the Everton game but Ramires and Terry will miss it. #CFC (SL)

In light of a horrendous cameo by Oriol Romeu, it would seem that John Obi Mikel's return is important, but it becomes less of a factor should Chelsea switch to the 4-2-3-1. Terry's absence is obviously a blow, but the Gary Cahill-David Luiz partnership looked fairly good against United, so I wouldn't be too fussed about that. Lampard getting into a match would be pretty handy as well. It shouldn't be long until we're at full strength again, at any rate.

So with Ramires not yet back

Who’s our best choice for the double pivot if we stay with the 4-2-3-1? I’d be inclined to start with the same XI that played today (including Bosingwa over Cole).

I might do Lampard-Essien deep

Lampard’s passing ability is underrated – he’s very good at spraying to the flanks and we could use that to hit Everton on the counter, especially if we get Baines out of position

Lamps puts brilliant balls to the fullbacks

Cole looks better when Lampard is there putting the balls for him.

I am fine with a David Luiz-Cahill partnership

I am not fine with a John Terry-Gary Cahill partnership

by Graham MacAree on Feb 5, 2012 7:03 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree but what's your reasoning for that?

I think they are too similar to make a really good partnership. They dont cover each other’s weaknesses.

You just spelled it out

I think David Luiz is the only Chelsea CB capable of being David Luizian

Ahhh

this must be what Graham had posted earlier. There was a shot of something in the stadium and I had no idea what it could have been pointing out. I got duped! Like that thing where you are so used to what it should be that you wouldnt think twice about it. It took me several looks to even see.

But then that shows

it’s not such a big fail … when on first glance you didn’t even know what was wrong :D

I feel confident if we land the same XI next match

Mikel won’t start and Lamps probably can’t handle many minutes on a match yet. Still, the 4-2-3-1 is a huge improvemnt

Another thing that came up in my mind

Have we ever put Lamps as AMC in a 4-2-3-1?

I was thinking this too actually

It’s just that that probably means miereles and lampard on the field at the same time. Maybe in a new formation it’ll work better though?

by marc.nicholls1 on Feb 5, 2012 7:49 PM GMT up reply actions

I don't think so...

But we’ve tried him as AMC in a diamond, and that went horribly, so it’s probably best not to risk it if we have other options (Mata)

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 7:51 PM GMT up reply actions

That would push Mata to the left

And take Malouda out of the starting XI. And the real problem in my opinion is landing Meireles and Lamps as the duo of holding mids. Essien and Meireles worked out pretty well today in my opinion

They tried it against Bayer Leverkusen

It worked okay, but I’d think he’d be better deeper anyway.

How long is Ashley Cole out for?

I didn’t think it would be three matches because it wasn’t a straight red card.

AVB finally going with a 4-2-3-1

Maybe he is reading Chelsea fans’ reaction on the internet after all.

sigh...

….we miss a lot without Ramires. And Malouda has to go.

Would it go horribly wrong to play Torres as a playmaker?

He might be able to resurrect his career in a new position.

by RamStamford on Feb 6, 2012 10:04 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

Can't see it happening, to be honest.

A lot of his through balls are coming from being as high up the pitch as he is, and taking advantage of onrushing players who are running at pace.

by TPalmer on Feb 6, 2012 11:16 AM GMT up reply actions

Wasn't a bad question

Maybe not a deep lying playmaker at all, but I’ve recently wondered if he would be better on the wing. Have him and Sturridge switch? Or play two rotating strikers up top, with focus being on Danny staying central with Torres drifting wing to wing? He seems to want to be out there anyhow, and maybe that would take whatever pressure he’s feeling about shooting away somewhat, enough for him to stop worrying so damned much about it. I dunno… while he is here, not sure it’s a terrible idea to try. They’ve already done this for small spurts in a game before, and if I recall, one of the times it wasn’t half bad (when he had some freedom to switch wings).

You know what's poo?

Having to root for Tottenham to further their distance from us for third, just to give us some comfort zone for fourth. Stupid Newcastle. Why did their crisis get to end? Also.. we really kind of need to win next week. It will help my sanity regarding table position. Also… it would mean that we’d just stay the same distance to Spurs, for now.
