Chelsea Vs. Manchester United: Lineups/Game Thread

Chelsea starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Petr Cech; Jose Bosingwa, David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic; Michael Essien, Raul Meireles; Florent Malouda, Juan Mata, Daniel Sturridge; Fernando Torres.

Substitutes from: Ross Turnbull, Paulo Ferreira, Ryan Bertrand, Sam Hutchinson, Oriol Romeu, Lucas Piazon, Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United starting lineup: David de Gea; Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Rafael da Silva; Ashley Young, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia; Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck.

Substitutes from: Ben Amos, Fabio da Silva, Paul Pogba, Paul Scholes, Park Ji-Sung, Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov.

For the sake of my sanity, I'm listing this as a 4-2-3-1. Otherwise I hate this lineup.

I’m ready to (continue to) drink!

by DPeezy on Feb 5, 2012 3:15 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

I can deal with the bertrand decision

But romeu should be holding in the back especially against a team like United. Sometimes I really don’t get AVB’s decision making.

Bosingwa at left back

No Romeu?

It’s 10:16 AM and I need a drink. Now.

If it was a 4-3-3

Pretty sure Romeu would have started. So it’s most probably 4-2-31 but you never know AVB that guy said he trusts Ryan and then plays Bosingwa.

by Archit Arya on Feb 5, 2012 3:24 PM GMT reply actions

that's a ridiculous assertion

United were level on points coming into the weekend

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:37 PM GMT up reply actions

I can't tell if it's good that I'm positive about this match or not.

Like, I think I’m predicting us being stuffed here, but it should a damned fun match. Neither team is particularly near their best.

I can't believe

He won’t give Ryan Bertrand a chance to play and instead play Bosingwa at LB. At this point I’m so sick of Cole and Bosingwa I want Hutchinson and Bertrand to play.

As for Malouda in Midfield I’d rather Piazon at least he is hungry, creative and is a threat to score a goal, things Malouda hasn’t been in year.
I HATE MALOUDA

by michaelkhan3 on Feb 5, 2012 3:32 PM GMT reply actions

Romeu

is probably the best option and then push Essien further. But here is what we get for loaning out McEachran a ton of injuries in midfield, he is the guy I’d like to see playing.

It would make sense ro have Jacob Mellis or Conor Clifford on the bench, hell I’d start either one ahead of Malouda

by michaelkhan3 on Feb 5, 2012 3:40 PM GMT up reply actions

um

Torres has scored against good defenses and has consistently provided assists this season. Lukaku has looked lost whenever he’s been on the pitch.

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:39 PM GMT up reply actions

Lulu has looked more impressive than Torres in his little cameos. I don't expect

him to start, just wondering why Stephen doesnt want to see him at all.

by Valens on Feb 5, 2012 3:40 PM GMT up reply actions

Right, it's not hard to be more impressive than Torres

So what’s it say about Lukaku that he hasn’t been?

Look, I think Lukaku is a brilliant prospect but he’s looked out of his depth this season. He’s done absolutely nothing that makes me think he can contribute positively this season.

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:47 PM GMT up reply actions

i don't he's seen enough time on the pitch

to be saying he hasn’t been consistant, of course he hasn’t been, he needs more time

by White Lightning on Feb 5, 2012 3:49 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh I agree

He clearly needs a loan move. But throwing him on in this match will mean we’re desperate or that Torres is hurt, neither of which is very palatable.

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:51 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree with a loan move, but

Chelsea is pretty thin as far as out ’n out strikers go, need more depth there

I didn't order assholes with my whiskey

by White Lightning on Feb 5, 2012 3:53 PM GMT up reply actions

Definitely

I just don’t like having a young player there who needs to be playing regularly to develop.

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:56 PM GMT up reply actions

At least

Lukaku makes it awkward for people and wins balls in the air. Latelly Torres is doing nothing over Christmas he played pretty well but now ugh

by michaelkhan3 on Feb 5, 2012 3:44 PM GMT up reply actions

Lukaku has been TERRIBLE in the air

I don’t think he’s won a single header all season. Very surprising, to be honest, since I thought he could at least be a battering ram immediately.

by bsally on Feb 5, 2012 3:45 PM GMT up reply actions

It's bizarre!

He gets into decent positions but every single CB he’s come up against gets above him.

De Gea's been tested more

He was the busiest keeper before he got yanked from the starting lineup. He’s not nearly as bad as people make him out to be. Cech isn’t having his best year, and we didnt sort out our defense for months.

I'm oddly okay with this

We scored some goals, which was nice to see again. And a draw against United is better than I was expecting yesterday.

Yes, up 3-0 and we can’t hold on is TERRIBLE. Yes, Torres could’ve won it with that one moment. Yes, De Gea had a few big stops (Essien, Cahill, Mata). None of those things make for a fun afternoon.

But 3-3 against United, and we showed a few moments of brilliance? I’ll take that.

Our resurgence began after we beat Manure

by Rohi D on Feb 5, 2012 6:03 PM GMT up reply actions

And this will be unpopular, but I don't blame Webb

Both of those were bad defending moments, and not unreasonable calls. If we were on the other end and they were non-calls, we’d be pissed.

Plus, we got away with two in the first half. All in all, fair game

True

We can hardly complain that the 2 penalties they could have had in the first half weren’t given, though, can we…

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 6:05 PM GMT up reply actions

Those weren't much better than the Sturridge one.

The Cahill one definitely wasn’t, on replay.

Bran's wasnt really a penalty

But he’d a couple of rough spots in the game otherwise. Some good ones too, but DL was the cleaner of the two, in my opinion.

I can't tell which you don't think was a penalty

Because as far as I could tell, they were both quite clear cut penalties – I’d have been furious if those challenges had happened against us and not been given

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 6:09 PM GMT up reply actions

I don't think the 2nd was a penalty.

Looked to me like Welbeck had to change direction to initiate contact where there would have been none (the view from behind looks like he steps into the challenge). In fairness though, I’m not convinced that the Young shout early on shouldn’t have been one.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 5, 2012 6:16 PM GMT up reply actions

Hmm

I wouldnt put him up that high. He was somewhere in the middle for me, in terms of the overall team performance. I definitely swore at him on my television set a lot, and was really displeased with his hesitation on that last shot opportunity.

I’d probably give it to DL, if I had to pick.

The only reason he was so insistent that ManU would maul us is because it happened to his team. He just wanted us to share in the misery. We definitely could have lost, but I don’t think it would have been in the proportion he expected. Not to mention, we didn’t.

Was Cahill the one that needed to pressure Rooney?

I didnt see if it was Cahill or Bran… I thought it was Bran. I was more upset by that part of the play… Rooney’s cross could have easily never existed. This game was quite like the Carolina Panthers (NFL) season.

We didn’t expect much coming in, but after a little early success, we all got greedy and forgot that this team wasn’t supposed to hang with ManU in the first place.

Is it painful? Sure.

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 6:13 PM GMT reply actions

Hmm.

I mean, spread out over different matches not involving ManU, that starts to sound pretty favorable for United. Ugh… does this make me one of those tin hat types?

by alynne4307 on Feb 5, 2012 6:24 PM GMT up reply actions

You need to consider why, though

Traditionally United have been one of the most attacking teams in the league and controlled most of the possession. Unlike teams like City or us, they’ve been doing that pretty consistently since the Premier League started. You’ve got to have the ball in and around the opposition goal area to win a penalty and United have consistently done that more than pretty much any other team, so it’s hardly surprising that they have won more penalties…

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 6:44 PM GMT up reply actions

I dont disagree with this

It would be interesting to see the remainder of the decisions and percentages… or even if there was some magical stat on how many controversial calls a ref makes. Now… I know controversial is different to everyone, so that stat will never really exist. I would say Chris Foy probably does the most.

I dont pay enough mind to refs, mostly, but from what I recall, I feel like Clattenburg(?) is one of the more sound guys on the field. Maybe not all the right calls, but he hasn’t always come across as impulsive to me. Usually does the whole “calm players with a chat” thing. But then, I really don’t see all his matches.

How I wish I was not saying this...but yeah, I'm starting to dislike Torres now..

He has really cost us some points…He is lacking confidence and is really becoming a liability.

by Rohi D on Feb 5, 2012 6:35 PM GMT reply actions

It wasnt a guaranteed goal, though

I agree, I cannot believe he hesitated to shoot… again- but it’s not like that cost us the points. Now… before everyone goes and says I am blindly defending him.. I will reinforce that I am pretty ripshit he didnt just shoot on that chance.

by alynne4307 on Feb 5, 2012 6:41 PM GMT up reply actions

His hesitation is bothering me..

He makes too touches before he fires the ball and that gives enough time for the defenders to close down on him..not to mention he is also hesitant to take on defenders (as we saw in earlier match) he is simply content with passing the ball to some other player !!!

by Rohi D on Feb 5, 2012 6:50 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah...

I wish I knew what to do about it. Because while he is declining physically, it isn’t that bad, and he hasnt lost that much skill (his first touch has gotten much worse, though, and his shooting on target isnt as good, but I think half of that is to do with his hesitation to shoot in the first place… he needs to shoot a lot more). Seems a weird mental block that I would have a hard time believing hasn’t been mentioned to him by now. He needs to sort it out.

He can’t get upset with teammates for hesitating on the ball (which, yes, they often do and that irritates me as well), but then go and do so himself. He needs to pull the trigger more and just get over it if it doesnt go in. They eventually will if he at least shoots.

by alynne4307 on Feb 5, 2012 7:27 PM GMT up reply actions

So it finally boils down to lack of confidence...

The mental block can be attributed to paucity of goals…Since he is not scoring, he wants to make most of whatever chance he gets, and tries to shoot only when he is clear on goal…no half chances !!!

How about asking him to take penalty kicks during matches…at least his goals count will keep increasing..just wondering!!!

by Rohi D on Feb 6, 2012 6:15 AM GMT up reply actions

Well

He’s not much of a penalty taker. He never really was… wasn’t excellent with them at Atletico… he got some and didnt get others, so he was the sort of striker known for goals from open play. He hasnt taken one in years, I think. I was actually surprised this summer, during the Asia Cup, when he opted to take a free kick (and promptly skyed it), because it just isn’t his known skill set. Now, they could work on that with him, but I have a feeling that wouldn’t be the thing he craves… he seems to like the open play goals. He might feel like a penalty is something on a platter and not really helping him back to form, so it may not do the trick.

Not sure if it is confidence… but to me it is some sort of mental block. Only he and maybe his closest cohorts would know for sure. But my best estimate is that it is something like the “yips”. I actually think this person describes the situation fairly well:

AVB's comments

In both our games against Man U we expected a top ref but they have had an influence on the result each time

by Archit Arya on Feb 5, 2012 6:37 PM GMT reply actions

He should be making it all about the ref to the media

He knows the individual errors were there, but what good is it going to do to criticize his players for that to the press? Anything he can do to take the focus off of those individual mistakes in the public eye is likely for the best. Put the focus on himself…put it on the FA…put it on Webb. At least it’s not questions about the guys who have to go out and beat Everton next weekend now.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 6, 2012 3:34 PM GMT up reply actions

I dunno...

I think he answered it fairly (from what I’ve seen of later quotes). I am not in favor of him naming names and suggesting some players really messed it up. I mean recognizing that we didn’t lose the lead solely to poor refereeing decisions. And there is nothing wrong with suggesting they’ll work on it and try to take care of it before the next match. I do hate though, when it isn’t all down to the ref, and managers make it all about the ref. I don’t know that scape goating does much better, unless, like you say, it is only for the media and the guys are all good not to pay attention to the media and they have a game plan behind the scenes.

I appreciated that it sounded like AVB was really bummed for the fans, as well. They are taking it harder than some of us are… in the end, while we didn’t keep the lead and that is a total bummer, I was expecting a loss, so I’m not so disappointed in the end. Hopefully they shake off their own disappointment for Everton and right their ship. They made good progress in the match, but some things happened and a win wasnt meant to be.

by alynne4307 on Feb 6, 2012 7:39 PM GMT up reply actions

This is what he said

“I think it was a game where we were positive. We had the initiative for most of the game and went to 3-0 up. It’s difficult to take in. It was a massive recovery for United. We feel it’s a win for them because they came back from 3-0 down. It’s a disappointment for us. We had it in our hands and let it slip. [There were] some strange decisions today. At Old Trafford, we lost two goals to two offside decisions. These things keep happening. Today, the first one was a penalty, I do agree with that. The second one I don’t think so. I don’t know if Howard Webb is trying to compensate for something.”
