Snow Might Force Chelsea-United Postponement

Are you looking forward to Chelsea vs. Manchester United? If so, I have some ominous reportage from Dan Levene:

10cm of snow already in some parts of the southeast. Central line suspended out east. Suspect we may have a football-free day tomorrow.

Conditions sounds pretty bad in London, and it's not completely out of the question for the FA to move this fixture around - it's exactly what happened last year. At this point, I'm 50/50 about whether the match gets played at all. Obviously it's be in Chelsea's best interests to have the match postponed - their injury list presumably won't be nearly so bad if and when this got rescheduled (plus they might get their ACoN contingent back), but I'd hope that the only way the game is called off is if there's actually a real problem with getting to the ground.

Chelsea have a webcam set up so you can check the conditions at SW6, so keep an eye on it as we get closer to the supposed kickoff time.

We previously had a Utd game postponed because of snow

Which pissed Utd off, especially Rio on Twitter. At that time we were struggling too.

Therefore, lets do it again!!!

Utd

fans have already been commenting that they think it will miraculously happen again.

In this image:

AVB and Abromovich consult on how to best handle tomorrow’s match.

Abromovich was then reported to have left the grounds to buy a snow storm.

That's annoying :cP

Why does snow even have to happen?

Just left SW6

Well over 2 hour sago, as it took me that long to get home from work, and it has been snowing steadily for about 7 hours… I would lay it 1/2 that the game is cancelled tomorrow. It will depend on the routes down to London as much the area itself. They will have to postpone early in the morning though to prevent people travelling from Surrey with their Man Utd tickets…

Any updates on this?

I’m more upset about this messing up the live broadcast on the main fox channel than anything else. This could’ve been a big advert for footsie and the EPL

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 5, 2012 4:15 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

Man U and Arsenal did play on Fox two weeks ago, in the first live EPL game to ever be broadcast live OTA in the U.S. (there were other tape delayed games, including the first game this season between United and Chelsea)

But I’m not going to lie. Super Bowl Sunday. English Premier League live OTA. Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. I was excited for this.

So...

the pitch is starting to melt…. I guess it has underground heating? So the field shouldnt be too much an issue, unless it turns to mud or something. I guess it is more to do with travel surrounding the stadium. At this time, the traffic cams in London don’t look too bad, but for a city unfamillar with snow, I am not sure what qualifies as bad. Cars are still driving on them.

by alynne4307 on Feb 5, 2012 4:35 AM GMT reply actions

I'd say about 95% of the snow has melted off the pitch..

…but that wont mean much if peeps can’t get to the bridge.

Having just looked out of the window...

I can say with certainty that if I had a ticket, I wouldn’t be able to get to the game. I live about 45 minutes from SB by train, if that helps with anybody’s calculations.

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 9:44 AM GMT reply actions

Nope

I used to, but as a student I don’t have the kind of disposable income for that. I’m planning on getting one in the next couple of years or so once I have a job, though :-)

What's the local temperature?

Because in middle Europe here it’s around -15, -10 °C …

1 degree C...

It’s going to be a chilly game to watch!

by ChelseaMariner on Feb 5, 2012 11:28 AM GMT up reply actions

Hm that's not really cool at all ...

compared to the temperatures on continent Europe and what other leagues had to fear

by Maiev on Feb 5, 2012 12:55 PM GMT up reply actions

I wonder how much of this is due to the game being shown on Fox

The whole point is to convince Americans that we have a good sport to offer and attract fans etc. I don’t think that they would be particularly impressed with a sport that is cancelled because of 3 inches of snow (especially when you look at those NFL matches where they’re scraping snow off of the field during the game). From a PR standpoint, they couldn’t really afford to postpone this game

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 11:12 AM GMT up reply actions

Will have very little factor.

Police and local council will have the biggest say on safety grounds, for the travel of the fans and general health and safety.

by ChelseaMariner on Feb 5, 2012 11:30 AM GMT up reply actions

I never knew some cm of snow

was already an issue for travel safety. That’s surprising me a bit … because I live in an area where some cm of snow alone are no hindrance to anything, especially travel ;)

by Maiev on Feb 5, 2012 12:57 PM GMT up reply actions

No...

But the club could still have decided that it wasn’t safe enough inside the ground if they had wanted to postpone it

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 2:43 PM GMT up reply actions

In fairness

There was an Eagles game cancelled last year or the year before because of safety reasons due to snow… I remember the mayor of Philly went all insane thinking it was because the players were too sissy to play in it, haha. Granted, there was a lot more snow there, but Philly is well used to snow by now. Though game cancellations because of snow tend to happen a lot less here.

Doesn't England have some sort of system that involves trucks that clear snow off of the roads?

If they don’t I think it’s worth while to invest in one. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that a few inches of snow would keep people from going anywhere.

Official troll of WAGNH

by Sabrina Dessipe on Feb 5, 2012 1:07 PM GMT reply actions

You'd think...

Apparently it’s not worth the investment, or some stupid excuses like that

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 1:08 PM GMT up reply actions

But isn't snow in England a fairly common thing...

why would it not be worth the investment. What does anyone gain by having people stuck at home? It would seem to me that it would be in the country’s best interest to have that in place. Not only would it create more jobs it would also let people who need to go to work on those days go and people who want to go to shops can get out etc….

by Sabrina Dessipe on Feb 5, 2012 1:15 PM GMT up reply actions

Yes, exactly

It seems that everyone but the government can see that…

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 1:28 PM GMT up reply actions

You mean ...

those cool vehicles?

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 5, 2012 1:11 PM GMT up reply actions

It too baffles me to know

England don’t have those handy vehicles … because this is a common sight here … :D

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 5, 2012 1:13 PM GMT up reply actions

It isn't common where I live (because it doesn't snow)

but everywhere where it does snow they should have snowdozers it’s just common sense.

A few inches of snow doesn’t stop anyone from doing anything anywhere but England.

In other regions

everything gets only really excited when there is at least 1m of snow :D

Yeah

If there’s a blizzard it’s ok to get excited.

OTish: We have sad snowness here

We had a couple of weekends of it, but it has been a very strange winter in New England. We actually would take England’s snow in a heart beat. They’re having trouble with some of the ski resorts up here because our temps keep going up and down, and there has been almost no frozen precipitation. This time last year, we’d had about 3-4 decent storms and were buried in! This year we’ve gotten excited about flurries.

Mother Nature… you got the delivery address wrong… that was NEW England, please.

by alynne4307 on Feb 5, 2012 2:59 PM GMT up reply actions

New England snow also usually means New York

And that would mean a whole lot of shoveling for me on Super Bowl Sunday. No gracias.

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 5, 2012 3:05 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Ha

I really sort of mean in general. We’ve had little snow this winter, you must admit. Though, I guess it evens out last year, where roofs collapsed and then we got snowmelt flooding up the bum.

Slightly off-topic

But if anybody is stuck for something to do until the football starts this afternoon, the rugby (Ireland vs Wales) promises to be quite a treat!

by deg0ey on Feb 5, 2012 1:31 PM GMT reply actions

At least if things go wrong

we can do that whole “we didnt have all the players we wanted or needed, and no depth on the bench” kind of thing? Trying to find you a silver lining. ;)

Out team today...

Team: Cech, Ivan, Cahill, D Luiz, Bos; Ess, Meir, Mal; Sturr, Torres, Mata. –
subs: Turn, Fer, Bert, Hutch, Romeu, Piazon, Lukaku.

Shocking decision on the line up!

That better be a 4-2-3-11This was 1 opportunity to show Bertrand he has a future at the club instead he has picked a right back who is awful in his own position!Sends out a terrible message to young players we might hope to bring to the club also!I would also bet that Bertrand will be looking for a summer transfer following,he is at an age where he can no longer afford to sit around warming benches at Chelsea!
