Who Will Play Left Back Against Manchester United?
As we all know, Ashley Cole's late red card against Swansea City means that Chelsea will be without the England left back for the key home game against Manchester United on Sunday. We've already lost one match to the defending Champions this season, and I can't imagine we'd like to do so again, so having a reasonably stout defence would probably be a good idea.
So, who's going to start at left back? Andre Villas-Boas has a few options available to him. Jose Bosingwa played there against Bayer Leverkusen when Cole was unavailable, and put in a decent enough shift before the defensive meltdown right at the very end. Ryan Bertrand is nominally Cole's backup, although we've seen him barely at all this year. Paulo Ferreira is theoretically an option if you wanted to see an old man's knees get snapped in half while trying to mark Antonio Valencia, and David Luiz is talked about at fullback every week or so.
According to the manager, he's down to two options:
There's a difficult decision to be made tomorrow when we practice strategically for the game. We have full trust in Ryan's abilities. It's a game of massive importance. It will for sure be between Jose and Ryan. We have important players out, but we have a very big squad which enables us to approach the game in a positive way.
-Andre Villas-Boas. Source: Fulham & Hammersmith Chronicle.
I'm inclined to say it doesn't really matter, because Bosingwa and Bertrand are both liable to get spanked by Valencia anyway. I can see why you wouldn't want to hand Bertrand his first Premier League start in such a stressful game, and I can see why you wouldn't want to field Bosingwa, who isn't the best defender in the world anyway* out of position on the left.
*Understatement!
I've seen some claims that Bosingwa will be the man because that's who played against Leverkusen. This seems a little bit silly to me because Bertrand wasn't available for that competition (neither he nor Romelu Lukaku were on the Champions League group stages squad). I believe the manager when he says that he hasn't decided yet, and presumably that choice will be made after Saturday's training sessions. That doesn't stop me having a preference, however - I think I'd go with Bertrand.
I'm not sure there'll be much difference between the two on the pitch, but starting a young player who's been desperately starved for time so far this year will send a message to the rest of the reservists and the youth teamers. That's an important thing for Chelsea to do: We don't want them to give up on the chance of getting time here without going on loan. We're not talking about resting an elite player to give youth a chance right now, and a mediocre right back should not prevent Bertrand from seeing the pitch, no matter how high-profile the match.
What think y'all?

I want Bertrand
because i like what be brings to the table, but history shows that it will probably Bosingwa and his unibrow
I'm not sure history shows that
When was Bosingwa picked over Bertrand at left back?
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 4:50 PM GMT up reply actions
when has bertrand been picked to play at all this year

Bossy did start at LB one game this year when Ashley was injured.
I just can’t remember what game it was.

My preferred starting back line is this:
Bane, Luiz, Cahill, Bertrand
However, since AVB never does what I think, more likely it will be Bosingwa in place of Bertrand
I have a feeling it will be:
Bosingwa, Luiz, Ivanovic, Bertrand
I want Cahill for Bosingwa
Nani will easily tear apart Bosingwa and with Cahill we get another strong header.
thats exactly what I was thinking
hence the same starting 4 :)

Switch David Luiz and Cahill
We should probably stop playing DL out of position at RCB soon.
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 5:21 PM GMT up reply actions
I didn't even realize he was playing out of position
This is why you’re the pro
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 5:26 PM GMT up reply actions
They both favour left
DL is more capable of playing right, so that’s how it goes
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 6:21 PM GMT up reply actions
just watched that on youtube. he has no idea whether he can pick up the ball or not.
it’s great.

He was just wasting time I think...
the man isn’t that thick.

This is all because you only watch youtube clips
you’d not be saying that if you watch the matches
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Is there really that big a difference between playing LCB and RCB?
Surely they are very similar positions to play!
There is a quite big difference
I can play as a good RCB but totally suck at LCB. When someone tries to dribble on my left side I don’t know how to stop him.
When i played at school
even though I’d always describe myself as a midfielder (I’m a bit rubbish at marking but I could run, dribble and pass decently for someone who can’t play football very well) I got played in defence because I could foul and get away with it. The teachers never gave penalties
Let's go with Bertrand...cause why the [fun] not?
I don’t have confidence in either being an effective counter-agent to Valencia. (I would have even less confidence in Cole, tbf.)
Bosingwa, if on his best behaviour could do the job…but those sorts of performances are few and far between from the Portuguese. So we might as well throw Bertrand in at the deep end and see how he fares.
Not much downside, Huge potential upside
If he does poorly, Bosingwa probably would have too.
If he does well, we have a legitimate backup to Ash that has proven himself in a big game, and maybe he starts getting some more minutes.
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 5:21 PM GMT up reply actions
Cole's form may have dropped significantly in the last 18 months
but you would still have to have more confidence in him doing the job than the other 2!He hasn’t gotten completely terrible yet, although he will never again be what he used to be and we should be looking to the future without him!Hopefully Bertrand or PVA can reach Cole’s former level in the near future but I get the feeling if Bertrand does not get the start on Sunday he will probably be looking for a transfer come the summer!
How come Paulo Ferreira is out of consideration?
Not stating a preference, but still just wondering.
[Although he did offer a bit of a solution to Bale’s pace with neat deep positioning that day at White Hart Lane]
I don't think it matters too much.
Bosingwa might play a better game at LB simply because he’ll be uncomfortable and constantly looking around.
Bertrand might not realize how difficult his job is and do well on youthful ignorance and bravado.
Or they might get absolutely torched. May as well see what Bertrand can do against top opposition. We know Bosingwa already.
who's better?
is bossy at rb better than cahill at cb?
by Blue_For_Life on Feb 3, 2012 5:42 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
Both are not top class
But Iva is better at RB then he is at CB and Cahill is a better header. So Cahill looks like a winner
why wasn't this just as true against Swansea?
when everyone was giving grief about Bosingwa getting picked over Cahill to start?
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 5:49 PM GMT up reply actions
For me it's opponent-specific
Bosingwa is the guy I’d prefer if we were dominating the match. Ivanovic if we’re in real danger of conceding.
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 5:58 PM GMT up reply actions
I guess that's the difference then
I didn’t expect to dominate Swansea, at all. They’ve played really well all year, especially at home, and especially given their style of play (possession). Meh. What’s done is done, right?
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 6:08 PM GMT up reply actions
Don't know about everybody, but I just wanted to get Cahill out there
Regardless of who played at RB. I would’ve been fine with one of Bossy and Ivan starting, and the other sitting, to allow Cahill a start (against “not-ManU”). In retrospect, with Swansea offering very little threat, it would’ve been an even better call.
Both are not top class
But Iva is better at RB then he is at CB and Cahill is a better header. So Cahill looks like a winner
I want Bertrand
But I think it will be Bosingwa, because AVB usually choses experienced players over talents in important matches even if they are played out of position.
And besides Bosingwa kept Messi out of the game against Barcelona at left back (when A. Cole was suspended). :D
I am scared of this game. Valencia destroyed us last year and he's in killer form this year.
Plus, we are in absolutely terrible form. Please save us Michael Essien.
by ComesOutToEssien on Feb 3, 2012 5:53 PM GMT reply actions
Valencia might not even start with Nani and Young fit
Presumably they’re the first choice wingers for united
Yes, but then we have to deal with NANI AND YOUNG
and that’s even scarier
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 6:13 PM GMT up reply actions
Underrated, yes. But better than Nani or Young?
On their game?
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 6:16 PM GMT up reply actions
He doesn't has those tricks
But he is better crosser among all three. And back from injury Young can’t replace him
Young is better than Nani on the left
Nani is probably better than Valencia on the right. Hence Nani and Young are the first choice. Hard to say if they’d be at the top of their game. I’d imagine Valencia would start on the bench because he can be brought on a right back or for Nanin or Young
Except Young isn't in-form. He just came back from injury. Valencia is in-form.
I still don’t think Young is better than Valencia regardless.
But they don't play the same position
And I didn’t say Young would be in form I said it’d be hard to tell. We know SAF likes players that cut in from wide area’s and Valencia doesn’t do that as much. Either way it’s a lot for Bertrand to deal with. I think we should try and make life very hard for the midfielders and fullbacks so the wingers can;t get into the game very well.
Definitely
As long as our wingers mark the full backs well and the midfield is controlled by Chelsea (which I assume it would be) then United’s wingers should be manageable for our full backs.
It would be very foolish to start an out-of-form/just-come-back-from-injury Young over
an in-form Antonio Valencia.
As good as Valencia is Nani isn't as good on the left.
But Nani is possibly better than Valencia on the right (at least in SAF’s opinion)
Definitely Bertrand. If he gets skinned, at least he'll learn/get experience.
The same can’t be said about Pepe.
We've not got much to lose.
Bertrand could get a nice bit of experience against a top team. If we lose the match only Newcastle can catch us and they have to win by 6 and we’d have to lose by 6 to lose our position so we’d be alright. It’s a home game so I think we should go for it. Especially seeing as they’re not a direct rival at this moment in time.
Ramires will definately be missed.
INTERESTING STAT: The most successful dribbler in EPL this season is Chelsea’s Ramires who is one of very few players to be flourishing under Andre Villas-Boas’ management right now. The Brazilian is coming out of his shell more with every game and has beaten his opponent on 34 of 46 attempts (74%). (according to whoscored.com)
I wonder if he might be better off as a winger than as a midfielder
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 6:46 PM GMT up reply actions
That would be a waste of his energy
someone with that much drive should be playing centrally and in the midfield, methinks
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 3, 2012 6:47 PM GMT up reply actions
His crosses are poor & unpredictive otherwise he can be a useful winger.
by ankurbhattcfc on Feb 3, 2012 6:53 PM GMT up reply actions
yes you are to the point. I read article here about highest crossing efforts. “Three of the four
highest crossing efforts of the season have come in the last 5 matches: @
Swansea (43), @ Norwich (40), v. Aston Villa (39).” Stats clearly looks amazing but why are those chances are wasted ? its bcoz those crosses have no quality. Most of them are far away from our strikers. Otherwise some of them should had gone inside goalpost.
by ankurbhattcfc on Feb 3, 2012 7:02 PM GMT up reply actions
Also, the strikers aren't attacking the crosses
Without Drogba, our deliveries look even worse than they actually are.
by Graham MacAree on Feb 3, 2012 7:06 PM GMT up reply actions
@Graham
oh so you saying problem is in our strikers and not in mid-field ?
by ankurbhattcfc on Feb 3, 2012 7:11 PM GMT up reply actions
No
I am saying we have problems in multiple places. This is not a black and while issue.
How come you keep replying to your comment rather than to mine? :-)

Boswinga did ok against Messi, as he is a left
footed player playing on the right side, so having a predominantly right footd player against him made it easier.
Bertrand
I would still rather see Bertrand than Boswinga, but I doubt it’ll happen.
I get a gut feeling that AVB will go against his usual policy
And start Bertrand. Though I love Bosingwa. I’d go with Cahill in centre, too. He’d offer us something in the United box for corners as well. Start Cech. Bane-Cahill-DL-Bertrand, Essien-Meireles, Malouda-Mata-Sturridge and Torres up front in 4-2-3-1. Should be decent.
Brani, DL, Cahill, Bosingwa across the back i'd say
And I really hope Malouda isn’t starting midfield
How about both?
5 defenders anyone? ROFLBBQSAUCE
Bertrand
Bosingwa shouldn even play in the championship he is terrible. How many goals have chelsea concided this year because of Bosingwa’s incompetence. If AVB is going to sing his policy of investing in youth time to give them a chance. It will be a Baptism of fire for Bertrand and i’d love to see him set up to the mark
would rather have the one comfortable enough to push forward and make valencia track back
in the circumstances i think that’d be bosingwa
