Groundhog Day Tactics - Stop Me Before I Cross Again!

Scapegoating, like a BOSS.

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster, drank piña coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. *That* was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get *that* day over, and over, and over?!

***

If there is one thing that stood out to me from the match stats from that abject failure of a performance at Swansea, it was the number of crosses attempted by our Blue-clad chumps. 43 in total. Forty-three. If you're not impresses by that number, think about it this way: that's about 1 lumped ball into the penalty box for every single minute of actual Chelsea possession (54% possession, minus some fudge factor for when the play was out of play, etc, etc).

So, forty-three. And what did all that lovely English strategy get us? A nice big bouquet of a dozen roses. A lucky deflection. Nothing. And before you slag off on the Portuguese Defensive Liability (pictured), know that Juan Mata led the way with 14 of them lovely balls (just as he's led us all season).

Forty-three. A new record for the AVB regime...but more worryingly, just more symptoms of the recent Disease of Xtreme Crossing that has reared its ugly head in the camp. Three of the four highest crossing efforts of the season have come in the last 5 matches: @ Swansea (43), @ Norwich (40), v. Aston Villa (39). We haven't seen numbers like that since early season (40 v. WBA; 38 v. Leverkusen; 37 v. Norwich)...and at least back then we got the results to go our way. (FA Cup & Carling Cup matches are not included here, by the way, as no such data is available for them.)

With that in mind, let's take a look at how crosses correlate with goals scored. Are crosses (or even crossing ability by wide players) something we should be striving for? Or are they more a sign of a team bereft of ideas, launching hopeful ball after hopeful ball?

Star-divide

(I should warn you that I have no delusions of this being an exhaustive analysis by any stretch of the imagination. And, if you're coming from Graham's post-match analysis post, you might want to brace yourself for the precipitous drop in quality. Moving on...)

The average number of crosses per match attempted by Chelsea is right around 25. If you exclude the six matches where we did not win the possession battle (and thus can argue that we weren't really playing the "AVB-way"; let's call this default from here on), you arrive at almost exactly 26. Let's see how that looks when broken down by goals scored:

Crosses_medium

Well, how about that! It certainly appears that we score more goals when we cross less. Or...we cross less when we score more goals. Or...perhaps when we're not scoring enough, and teams are packing their defensive area, we get frustrated and resort to the simple solution of a crossed ball. Perhaps that's due to lack of creativity (obligatory 'lack-of-creativity' mention - check!). Perhaps it's due to a lack of effective directness. Arguing cause-n-effect here may be as fruitless as arguing whether Fernando Torres struggles due to lack of supply (obligatory Torres mention - check!). I don't have an answer for all this...but the data paints a clear picture:

Crossing_medium

It certainly appears that we don't have much to lose by not crossing the ball too often. Versus Manchester City, after they were reduced to 10 men, AVB praised the team for staying patient and passing it around the horn, looking and probing for opportunities. We ended that match with 22 crosses, below the season average. Sure sounds like a better option to me than the constant din of the aerial blitz, into the box from out wide, only to end in disappointment and further frustration.

Some of this may be entirely too obvious. Clearly, we don't really have that prototypical center forward...or even just a player who may WANT to get on the end of a cross...yet we often insist on launching them just the same. Is it any wonder then that teams who have figured this out defend a certain way against us? They pack the box, force us wide and we duly oblige by taking the route of least profitability - even the best crossers in the Premier League barely crack 30% with their success/accuracy percentages (compare Mata at 26.5%, best of the frequent crossers on Chelsea). Boom, goes the cross, consigning another attack to failure.

And on a related note...instead of the "easy" option, how about we try more...THROUGH BALLS! Now there's a thought to gird the loins of Torres, no? And certainly anybody else who wants to score a fair few for Chelsea:

Nicely done Sir

The crossing was also my biggest concern during the game. While watching all I could think about was the fact that we could never get a good cross in as expected when the opposition packed the box so tightly.

Are there stat. available on the amount of time it takes a team to get the ball to the wings and cross it?

I'm not sure exactly how you mean "amount of time"

But I’m guessing no.
In general, publicly available statistics for football are limited and basic. Very little in the way of time-on-ball, speed-of-play, etc data out there…

Nice work

But I don’t think crosses are that unfruitful when you look at Man utd goals. I am sure they attempt more crosses than us. But the difference will be how quickly you attempt the cross after getting possession and how many targets are there. Man utd play 2 strikers and 2 wingers and since they they attempt the cross quickly after getting the ball only the 2 central defenders of the other team are back in the box and it comes down to an individual battle between forward and defender about who gets his head on the ball. We, on the other hand try to break down the opposition defense on the ground first. Fail miserably at this, and then push the ball back to the full back for him to cross. By this time the entire opposite team is in the box and they outnumber us like 2 to 1.

United may be better at converting them, but their raw totals are VERY similar to ours

(According to whoscored.com):
Chelsea: 605 total attempted
ManU.: 606 total attempted

United’s top 3 of Nani (182), Valencia (88), Young (86) – total of 356 – outpace our top 3 of Mata (155), Bosingwa (101), Malouda (61), – total of 317 – but it’s not by much. In fact, the accuracy of their top 3 is actually worse then ours (77/356 = 21.6% vs. 72/317 = 22.7%).

It would certainly be interesting to break down the actual amount of goals scored from crosses, to compare the two teams. We certainly have had a few very nice ones, so it’s not like we need to get rid of crossing entirely. There’s a time and place for it…but everything in moderation, as they say.

Nice Work

Even more frustrating than our crosses was that our players ( I am looking at you Torres and Sturridge) were not really interested in attacking them.I remember Cole produced a brilliant cross (only good thing he did in the match) which went both Vorm and the CB but Sturridge didn’t try to go to the near post and tap the ball in, instead he just stood there and looked at it being cleared.

overhaul of players

my name is Michael from Nigeria,i have been in a hell of a season with Chelsea, firstly let me start from the Management,i think the Sporting Director is doing nothing on the Team, in terms of players organization,he have to coordinate the technical crew on playing patterns,i watched many opposition game and its always interesting if you watching Man utd,Liverpool, spurs games i always feel excited cause the way they play bring you joy even duo they lost, but when Chelsea is playing is always a dull game only when the playing top teams, you see the energy,i.e even duo Madrid can beat Barcelona, hes winning other matches, and hopefully the la liga is for Madrid,Chelsea not winning home and not winning away matches,i always go home sad when ever i watch Chelsea play,am a dieing loving fans, but we can see the spirit of the days like 2004/2005 anymore…is AVB doing the right thing,am confuse please,

secondly on boswinga crosses ,i in all my life and soul hate that guy he is a flop, and ferrera is even worst,we need to let both guys go,and bring in good RB,look at Alves of barca, before his crosses is always up and up,but now he has improve and more best at RB,Chelsea RB are not improving, they are getting more worst than ever,we need to look things out for these teams ,i prayed we go for next season CL…

thanks

I think AVB forget that Drogba's at the ACoN

‘Keep crossing guys, and maybe he’ll come back sooner!’

Haha, it's the Drogba Rain Dance

The sound of a cross, fizzing into the box, sure to reach across the continents, calling our wayward soldier back to Stamford Bridge.
