Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Willian To Come This Summer?
It's been a grand total of one day since the close of the Janaury transfer window, so naturally it's time for this summer's hot sexy Chelsea transfer rumours to start appearing. That's right - it's Willian time. The Shakhtar Donetsk winger was the subject of at least one bid from Chelsea in January but ultimately didn't make the move to Stamford Bridge at which point I think we all assumed that any chance of him ever donning a Blues shirt had evaporated.
However, there are some very odd quotes out of FC Santos which would seem to imply that this is not entirely true:
Desistimos devido uma proposta que eles (Shakhtar) receberam do Chelsea. Foi uma oferta de dezenas de milhões de euros. Parece que ele deve ir para lá no meio do ano. Tentamos por empréstimo até o final do ano, mas não deu certo
-Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro, Santos President. Source: UOL Esporte.
My Portuguese is a little bit non-existent, so here's the Google translated version for your reading pleasure:
We gave up a proposal [to take Willian] because Shakhtar received one from Chelsea. It was an offer of tens of millions of euros. It seems that he should go there in the middle of the year. We offered to take him on loan until the end of the year, but failed.
What to make of this? I'm not entirely sure. When we were linked with Willian, I imagined that it was some sort of makeshift move to help us to a top four finish this season. Andre Villas-Boas pointed out that others (i.e. Lucas Moura and Eden Hazard) fit better into our long-term strategy. And yet Santos seem to be pretty sure that he'll be a Chelsea player this summer, which makes no sense - this is supposed to be the season which we struggle through only to reload with world-class talent, and while I like Willian more than some, if he's the answer for next year we're not asking a particularly sensible question.
There are plenty of reasons why we shouldn't take this that seriously. Santos could be making stuff up. Something could be lost in translation. Priorities may change in the next couple of months. But I really don't like this very much.
Time for a poll!

Maybe its a Willian and one of Hazard/Moura plan?
I wouldn’t mind Willian around the first team…he could start some, sub some…but only if its at the right price, though. If he is our ONLY intended major summer signing,I will cry myself to sleep until the world finally ends in Dec 2012.
If we sign either Hazard/Moura
I would prefer a CM to Willian. A CM like Modric we could go for Sahin or Cabaye or Banega.
Couldnt see newcastle letting him go for cheap as he has been a great player for them

I agree
I doubt we’d get him for that money. Willian and Hazard would be very good but a quality CM wouldn’t be a bad investment. Although we can wait until one becomes available for a decent price.
If we got Willian and Hazard we’d be able to play a 4-2-3-1 with Hazard, Mata, Willian and Sturridge rotating the attacking three. Sturridge, Torres and Lukaku rotating the CF position and then we’d have 6 midfielders to play in the pivot. With a team like that we should definitely be challenging both domestically and in europe. We’d also have a strong “b” team to play the carling cup.
If we leave it at that for a year and Torres still isn’t playing well enough we’ll get rid of him and buy a youngish CF and a world class CM (preferably under 27) then we should be the best team in the world…
I think the only reason we won't go for both
Is because of the total spending involved…it’ll easily cross 60m-70m pounds? Minimum. For two players. Which is why I thought one of them,Willian, and yeah we definitely need a CM. Modric would be great, and he’s proven. Sahin is great, and I really think he could fit into our team-but Mou will be against letting him go. Cabaye will involve crazy money, since its Newcastle we’re dealing with. Banega,if he’s available will be good, but I prefer Sahin. :D

Not Modric
Too old and expensive. We shouldn;t be spending large amounts of money on anyone over 25. We want to start introducing players just before they reach their prime. Keep them in during their prime then sell them on at the end or phase them out slowly whilst we introduce the next generation.
I wouldn't mind Modric for around 30m pounds,though
Seems reasonable…and for the role he plays in the centre,he can play into his 30s without any issues with just a few minor tweaks to his game. He’s just 26 now,I reckon? Not all that old. And he’s world class, and proven in both PL and CL.

After seing Malouda again --
hell yes to Willian. But we should go for Hazzard too.
@dblues, last time I checked, Lennon wasn’t bad at all. My blue blood is not boiling.
