Andre Villas-Boas Strikes Back
A funny thing happened a few days ago. Chelsea, at risk of falling out of the Premier League top four for the first time since history began, with an unpopular manager, a trigger-happy owner and a string of pretty miserable performances, did not fire anyone after losing 2-0 at Goodison Park. It's not like it was an unfortunate scoreline, misrepresenting the way the team played. It was an absolute atrocity, the sort of game that gets managers pushed off the cliff.
And yet here we are. Andre Villas-Boas is still at Cobham rather than being shipped off to some penal colony in Siberia. And, incredibly, the manager is starting to throw some punches of his own:
I have no less or more authority from the way you are putting it. My authority is total because it's the owner's authority.
[The players who don't like it] don't have to back my project. It's the owner who backs my project. I think the owner has full trust in me and will continue to progress with the ideas that we have.
-Source: Fulham & Hammersmith Chronicle.
Compared to what's happened to past managers of Chelsea when they've disappointed, this is a crazy development. I'm also not that sure it's a sensible one. If Andre Villas-Boas wasn't so loud about how awesome he is (which is apparent to those of us who followed Porto last season, but has completely failed to manifest itself during his tenure with the Blues), that'd be one, thing, but to air dirty laundry in the media is something else entirely.
I really don't get it. It would be pretty simple to explain to his players that he has the owner's backing and that they should buck up or get out without playing all of this drama out in public, but he's chosen exactly the wrong path, in my opinion. No matter whether or not you support Andre Villas-Boas as manager, I don't think it's reasonable to assert that this was the right way for him to have gone about his business - staying quiet and keeping this internal would be far more sensible.
The only thing I can think of that would make this move make any sense at all is if Villas-Boas is issueing Roman Abramovich a direct challenge via the media - fire me or back me. If that's true, he's playing a very dangerous game.

I find your lack of faith disturbing
I love it and do actually think it’s necessary. With all the shit that’s been printed over the years about “player power” etc. at Chelsea, I think it’s ok for the manager to respond in such a way to a question about the topic.
Lay down the law. He’s the boss; not the players. If they want to be little Tevez bitches, then off with their heads. We’ll find others, betters.
"Two players have already departed, and further will depart in the future and wont make part of the project: which more or less they expect. But this is the reality of any football team."
If AVB wants to be the Darth Vader to RA’s Emperor, I’m quite alright with that.

I think breaking player power is great
I don’t see what telling the press this stuff has to do with it
by Graham MacAree on Feb 17, 2012 4:52 AM GMT up reply actions
UNLESS!
It’s all a cover up and he’s just telling the press this stuff to satiate their cravings for dramatic happenings at Chelsea… and maybe everyone in the team is actually all happy and hunky-dory… despite a poor run of form.
i think it's a public show of strength
yes i agree in general that keeping things internal is mostly the best method, in this case i agree with AVB’s public proclamation. there is so much speculation in the media and among the fans concerning “player power” and what happened at Cobham etc. that i think AVB throwing up a big middle finger is quite a good and bold move. i’m with DPeezy on this one.
In addition to your theory....
……..Roman might be telling AVB to say that, in order to try and quiet things down a bit.
The Empire
If were the Empire would that make Arsenal the rebellion? I’d love to see AVB in a vader photoshop.

No, because the Rebellion won in the end...
Arsenal can be the Ewoks; capable of putting together a good offensive, but too poor to really do very much and just a bit shit on the whole.

I disagree
For a while now there has been the specter of player power hanging over our club. AVB has simply said “It’s my way or the highway” which is how it should be. The players now know that if they don’t toe the line they will be gone in the summer.
They also know that everyone who leaves in the summer or before will be tarred with the “troublemaker in the dressing room” brush.
Basically, I believe AVB has them over a barrel.
Sure, the players now know
They could also have found out without a press conference
by Graham MacAree on Feb 17, 2012 5:03 AM GMT up reply actions
I'm torn on this
While I generally agree and like for things to remain internal, it is possible he already tried that approach. Whether or not that is a dig at him for failing with that is another matter, but I think he felt something more substantial was needed. The players have gone public with their disapproval at times, it seems like AVB isn’t going to take that without fighting back.
I think I’m going to side with AVB, but barely. I do really hate the whole using the media as a “middle man” thing…
by AmericanChelseaFans on Feb 17, 2012 5:35 AM GMT up reply actions
Hmm
Like maybe they wanted to call his bluff? Could be… maybe if there are some players prone to letting their ego coast them through the team, they’d be inclined to believe the manager would sooner be sacked than they would… and the Press is a very unforgiving and permanent place to say such things, so maybe that is his way of showing that it is really not a bluff at all. Who knows… maybe he’s been encouraged to take this route by Abromovich? Stranger things have happened.
sorry for multiple responses
but i think this is not to inform the players but rather to inform the public. as in, the players know already, and now we all know they know. i think that’s a good move.
I feel like his response was a knee-jerk, brutally honest assertion
AVB appears to have been really irked by what transpired at the meeting, and is lashing out in kind – as you said, through the media. Or maybe he’s just repeating himself through a different forum. I don’t believe that’s much of a problem either way – he didn’t call any individual players out, he simply re-stated his policy. By that point, the media was already taking the ‘locker room dissension’ story angle and shouting it from the rooftops, so I don’t know how much damage would have been mitigated had he decided not to comment on it.
Either way, most of us can agree the ‘managerial authority’ approach is the right one when it comes to handling the egos in the dressing room. Whether or not Villas-Boas’ tactical decisions are adapting to his personnel is something that concerns me more. This 4-3-3 nonsense has got to stop.
Im all for this, truly shows he has confidence in his abilities. I also can't wait to get rid of some of this dead weight.
Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you.

If the Scatman can do it brother so can you.
Yo I'm the Scatman.
I'm really confused...
S**t is so jumbled up at the moment, with so many reports coming through.
We’re at a crucial time in the season and the only guys that can help us out of it is the old players, which makes it very confusing since they are the ones that are being dubbed to be replaced in the summer but we are totally reliant on them ATM
I hope Villas-Boas’s comments don’t spark a whole new s**tstorm with them. Villas-Boas will look like an idiot if we become even worse, or he’ll be forgiven or praised if we keep fourth.
I’m just waiting for the football and avoiding the talking because no one knows what is happening behind the scenes.
by el chelsea fuerte on Feb 17, 2012 5:19 AM GMT reply actions
The new guys are the ones that can save us
Mata, Ramires, Luiz, Sturridge, Cahill, Bertrand, all relatively young players who can replace the older players and give a bit of pace as well. Add to that Torres who works hard and creates space and I think we can easily let the older players go if they aren’t going to toe the AVB line.
I mean seriously, can Bertrand play any worse than the way Cole has been playing?
by david.mcdaniel on Feb 17, 2012 6:06 AM GMT up reply actions
Well, I agree...
Speaking to the press is like throwing a rock into a pond, it can create a lot of ripples. I hope, for AVB’s sake anyway, that he has read Roman correctly. If not, he’s done himself in with these comments.
When I go to the press conference before the game, in my mind the game has already started.
Jose Mourinho
i really don't think he gives a fuck
he believes in himself and his plan. i think he’s also sure he has Roman’s backing which is only logical as he was brought in to implement his plan, which he HAS been doing though the generational shift and poor results have obscured that in this transitional period. ultimately i feel like with the conviction he has, even if he were to get fired from Chelsea he knows he is (INCREDIBLY) young and will get to continue his career with another top club. we need a manager with balls right now, and i like the fearlessness he is showing.
Maybe he was just tired of the press making up stuff and wanted to set the record straight?
Even though this only makes it worse. They’ve already (intentionally) misquoted him (he doesn’t have the players’ backing apparently, when all he said was that he didn’t need it).
This
There have been so many reports since he took over, he has to put something out there that they can’t twist. Nobody likes change, particularly players who have got too comfy/too influential in the club. I think that AVB has been given a remit to overhaul the club but he has to keep delivering results….that’s easier said than done when not everyone is pulling in the same direction.
am sure
morinho would have done the same to stamp his feet. It is my way or no other way kind of,just like mancini is doing with tevez right now. Players power (forming a cabal kind of) must be broken, they can’t always hold us to ransom (legends or not).
We want new legs and fresh blood with sharp minds that will give us good and beautiful football. We want to see goals and shouts likewise. We have lost respect to smaller clubs and we keep playing draws or lose. Enough of bull s**t from the players.

AVB
Was well known for going after the press and trolling them in Portugal. I think that might be all he knows.
I do think that AVB doesn’t have the peices he needs to make the team work in the way he wants to right now. That isn’t his fault. I actually don’t think we are all that different from Arsenal (in terms of quality of player and fitting into the system, not everything else) right now. After watching them play Milan, they didn’t look so different than we did against Everton. Look, everyone likes to make fun of Wenger, but the guy can win. Arsenal just don’t have the players to do it right now. I don’t think Chelsea do either.
Player power has removed many a manger. Player power hasn’t delivered a Champions League victory. Roman might have figured out that his itchy trigger finger may have created a monster that needs to be stopped.
I’m not happy with the way the team is playing. I don’t think anyone is. Over at Chelseablog I was very vocal about removing managers when things were going wrong. I wanted both Scolari and The Toad out. When everyone starts complaining that the players aren’t giving enough effort… that means the manager needs to go.
Yet, with AVB I’m not sure that it means he has to leave. The facts are different, the spine of the team is old. If this team isn’t going to be a flash in the pan they are going to have to make the transition from one generation to the next. That happens now. AVB has shown he can win. At this point I want the team to make it to 4th place, and I want the young’uns to develop, and I want Josh to be amazing for Swansea. Then I want a cleanout in the summer. Drogs is gone. Lamps and Terry seriously consider their futures. Ash might be gone. We find a replacement for the Boss. Maybe Torres goes if we can get money for him.
We get a team that wants to play AVB’s system with a high line, and we go from there. Until that point it is going to be ugly. At least the Mancs can’t win the CL, and the wrong Mancs won’t win the league.
agreed with all
except i don’t think Drogs absolutely has to go. if he wants to, more power to him. but i think him being around to mentor Lukaku would be very useful, as i have a lot of hope in Lukaku.
If turn Lukaku into Drogba 2.0 then our team style will be stuck in the same old boot n pray
Let’s train him in the Spanish arts
by FootieFromAfar on Feb 17, 2012 4:43 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions
I think this is direct warning to players at loggerheads rather than to RA
This would certainly disrupt the team & the harmony & all that. But this looks like the strongest statement AVB could make to assert his authority to team. If he has full backing of RA (provided min qualification to stay in job is 4th place at least) & if the players are aware of this fact; they will know that it’s either AVB’s way or highway.
I see a few players (who are either misfit for AVB or for those who are creating nuisance against AVB) to be exiled in Siberia soon. While I am not the biggest fan of AVB, I am sure he is smart enough not to challenge a boss as powerful as RA in early stages of his managerial career – while his team is on the brink of disaster.
I appreciate that AVB is confident
in his abilities, but can you honestly critisize players for questioning his decisions when you see what he’s done with Cahill? This guy has got to be pissed. It’s not like AVB inheirited Cahill. He went out and got him a few weeks ago and promptly sat him in the stands. Then he moves to the bench and stays there when Terry gets injured! This guy played every minute for Bolton and broke into the England squad with the Euros only a few months away. He’s got to feel like he is losing his newly attained spot as a starting CD for England. He could have stayed where he was and been free to sign with anyone in July. I’m quite sure AVB didn’t mention to Cahill that if he signed with Chelsea he’d be shinning the bench with his ass for the remainder of the season unless both Terry and Luiz go down with injuries. It’s things like this that cause problems in the locker room and it is a sign of bad management. It’s one thing if he’s not getting it done on the pitch, but he’s played 1 game and hasn’t even subbed in the others.
When I go to the press conference before the game, in my mind the game has already started.
Jose Mourinho
any guesses on which players don't agree with his project?
i suspect Lampard, Malouda and maybe Cole…
Do not be fooled
I am well versed in the ways of a false prophet as I have a very good memory of one Scolari who came with talks of philosophy and revolution and tactics and all and we know where he ended up. I am not a coach but I have been tearing my hair out since his inception at the decisions he made and continues to make. He comes in and we all know about the player power and the fact that he is young, so we were all expecting some whole-sale changes to the team. But he wants to have a period of assessment. You will always struggle with players close to your age, and it was well discussed, but he did not jetison them he kept them, then he played Bosingwa instead of Ivanovic at RB, then he preffered Meireles to our greatest asset Lampard. Then after discovering the talent of Romeu, he proceeds to bench him to jolt his confidence. His substitutions have been awful and the high line experiment, made us have the leakiest defense from the meanest defense the season before. He is in trouble, he is out of his depth, and the players know it.
Fergie didn't win any trophy in his first season...
Chelsea owner and fans have something in common. They lack patient, now Roman uncle realises and showing some faith on AVB but fans……

3 years to win the cup
5 years ( I think) till he won the league. And this was after spending large sums, and a campaign in the press and in the terraces to get him fired in 1989.
by ChelseaMariner on Feb 17, 2012 9:56 AM GMT up reply actions
If he made no comment on the subject the press would rip him apart,
If he said that he had the full backing of the players, the press would call him a liar and rip him apart.
If he said this was a matter for the club and would be handled behind closed doors, he would be viewed as a week company man and ripped apart.
At least this way he is showing some strength to the rest of the league and the media. Whenever there has been an issue at other clubs, for example Man U, and there has been player discontent, they have been removed from the set up regardless of who they are. Supposedly there has been elements of player power in removing our last 3 bosses and this is getting the club no where in the long term and has to be stopped.
He may be young but has a right to show strength, he is the boss and if they don’t like it they can go swim. He has to be backed and given a chance, as I believe that given a little time to adjust to live in the Prem he will become a true great.
Agreed
It’s a “damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t” sort of thing, and there are pros and cons to each scenario. And his lack of responding with names or anything could even suggest he is speaking in earnest truth just about how it works… I don’t know that he actually confirmed that players have revolted… he could be talking in hypotheticals or even about players that have long-since known that they wouldnt be part of the project for the coming years. His comments that I’ve read thus far still don’t suggest to me that anything terribly dramatic actually happened at the training grounds.
The rest of my thoughts… I’m sure they voice their concerns- AVB has actually said before that he hears the players out and gets their feedback, but that in the end it is his decision. And the players have confirmed that he’s the boss. This has probably been happening over the course of the season, but maybe recent performances and Roman’s wanting to be involved warranted another discussion that included him. While it is a vulnerable statement for AVB to make to the press, given things could erupt and fail, it is a statement of confidence and standing behind something that even players that might disagree with him can appreciate, as it is at least very forward and to the point. And we all might be making a lot more of this than actually exists, just as much as the Press does (it is fun sometimes to speculate, but really, we have to remember that is just what we’re doing… unlike the Press, who believe they are working with facts).
Could someone please explain what the avb "project" is.
I dont see how struggling to get champions league football and playing the same team every week is much of a project. It’s not as if he has introduced loads of youth either!
Transition from long ball football
To a more fluent passing style.
^ This - but also a movement to inject a bit more youth in a aging squad who's best days..
…are behind them. It’s about the Mata’s , Sturridge’s of the world now. And it’s the ‘old’ guard that is having problems realizing this.

It seems that numerous places aren't writing the full quote...
I’ve just seen this one:
“If the players want to be part of this club’s future, they have to support the project with their performances,” Villas-Boas said. "If some of them don’t support me, that’s normal.
“Two players have already left and there will be further departures in the future. Contracts will have to be addressed and changes will be made. We have to defend the Chelsea badge, because they don’t pay us to be a failure and everybody understands the demands to be successful at this club.
“You don’t contemplate rewarding people who under-perform in any football team and our objective now is to get the best possible position in the Premier League and continue to fight for two trophies. In the situation we are in, we have to demand we do a lot better. We really need some results to put us back on track.”
I hope he knows what he’s doing.

Love this.
Spot on AVB. Love his boldness and I don’t think there is anything wrong with this piece. Too many reports and players have spoken against him, it’s good that he’s showing that he doesn’t care. I don’t find anything wrong with this.

I have to say that I like it too
I have to assume that he’s already tried the internal thing before going to the press. And the press is already having a field day with CRISIS! talk and how bad things are in the locker room, so I have a hard time believing this could make things worse or anything like that. Frankly, I think this is just a big shot across the players’ proverbial bow. If they need it reinforced that it’s AVB’s way or the highway, then this is probably as good a way as any to do it.
I’m honestly getting pretty tired of hearing about how this all is AVB’s fault anyway. Sure, there are decisions that I’ve disagreed with and you can debate some of the tactics. But this is true of any team/squad/manager in the world. But the overriding problem, to me, is the lack of quality/in-form players who fit what AVB wants to do.
I really think that of the regular starters, the only ones who should be locks to be a part of the future Chelsea are probably Cech, JT, Luiz, Ramires, Romeu, and Mata. I don’t mind finding a role for Lamps and Torres either. But we pretty obviously need new fullbacks, support in the midfield (which could come of the form of a permanent move of Mata), and new wingers (maybe Danny fits better in the middle, but I’m still not sold that he’s Chelsea quality). And we still don’t know what we’ve really got with Josh, Lukaku, or Bertrand, which to me is maybe the most disappointing thing that’s come out of this year.
I’m pretty frustrated by where things are at right now, but my frustration lies mostly with the players and very little with AVB. I will still take my chances with this squad though in a 1- or 2-game series with anyone, which gives me some hope for the FA Cup and CL.
lukaku
do we consider a loan deal for him since he is not quite ready for the hit man job in front of goal?
AVB should be left to complete the purging that we need in chelsea and lead us to a new dawn of football. I also think the coach needs to be more careful with the selections he makes and his substitution,he kills games sometimes with his wrong substitute.*
*I guess many coaches falls victim of this too.

AVB I trust
I seriously impress by AVB. Something in him says he is a future Ferguson, or maybe even better. Tactically excellent (he can only work with what he got), Brave, not afraid to take on the referees, youth oriented, attractive football. Excellent Scouting.
Weakness: Reacts to criticism, Media handling can be better.
If anyone in doubt remember what we thought about him after the QPR game earlier in the season.
