The Slow Boat to Fourth Place

25 down; 13 to go.

We're now two-thirds of the way through the season and the early season optimism has been well and fully dashed. While challenging for the title in a season of transition was always going to be a pipe-dream, I don't think even the most pessimistic of us expected this much struggle. Once we were challenging the Manchester duo for a place at the top, now we find ourselves locked in mortal combat for that all-important 4th place and the last remaining Champions League spot.

Having collected just 2 points from the last three (by way of a last-minute lucky deflection, a thrown-away 3-goal lead at the Bridge, and the season's the worst performance), it is certainly make-it or break-it time at Chelsea. Regardless of who gets blamed for all that, Chelsea need to rediscover some semblance of form and quick, lest we risk fading into true mediocrity.

For we're surrounded by three hungry, also deeply flawed teams: Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool. Fortunately, just like Chelsea, not one of them looks capable of true excellence...

Let's take a look at their performances so far this season and the challenges that lie ahead to see if we can glean any insight as to might claim that 4th place ribbon.

Star-divide

Instead of just waxing poetic about their stories, let's go with a graph. What you see here is a 3-game moving sum of points collected for each of the four teams. The first data point is after Matchday 3 (all but Arsenal started the season with 2 wins, 1 draw, and 7 points); 9 is the max. value (3 wins in a row); 0 is the min. value (3 losses in a row):

Progress_medium

This is certainly not painting a pretty picture for Chelsea. We started strong, winning three in a row on three separate occasions, but we've barely averaged over a point from the last 10 games. The force trend is definitely NOT strong with this one.

Arsenal, currently ahead of us on goals scored have been as erratic as ever. They're still the only team of the four to lose three in a row, yet they're also the only team to win more than three in a row...while exploring every state in-between those two extremes.

Newcastle, quite consistent of late, have still not faded away. Their strong start was followed by an extended slump, but they've proved their naysayers wrong and have stayed in the hunt.

Lastly, Liverpool is still around. If not for all the drama with Luis Suarez, their season so far would be wholly unremarkable. Consistently not-terrible: they're only 4 points behind us; consistently not-great: they're only 4 points ahead of newly promoted Norwich, but they have gone 3 matches in a row without a win only once all season.

Of course, we only have to look to the standings to see who truly did the "best" of the four from the first 25: Arsenal just edging our boys in Blue on goals with Demba Ba Utd just a point off the pace. The next 13 will determine the rest and that's where quality of opposition will start to play a factor as well:

Opps_medium

Interestingly enough, all four teams have 7 home and 6 away fixtures remaining. On average, all four teams will be facing opposition from the lower half of the table, with Chelsea & Liverpool having the easiest schedules. Liverpool & Newcastle have fairly balanced schedules remaining, Arsenal & Chelsea do not.

Ominously for Chelsea however, we have, by far, the toughest away schedule, facing on average teams placed above 9th. I guess it's a good thing that we have collected the most points on the road of the four teams so far...

Conversely, our remaining home schedule is by far the easiest. Compare that to Arsenal who face Top-8 opposition in 5 of their 7 remaining home fixtures. But despite our relative struggles at home, I sure would rather face top class opposition at the Bridge than on the road.

So. Chelsea must improve and improve a lot to have a chance at 4th place. I know that may sound obvious, but the improvement required may be even greater than we'd imagined. We may be tied with Arsenal right now, but their performances are trending up, while ours are trending down. Their remaining schedule also looks an easier ask than ours. And then there's also Newcastle, who simply will not go away, and Liverpool to worry about - and neither of them are involved in European competitions either.

In lieu of a proper conclusion, how about a poll?

bad feelings and bad news..

i seriously doubt us finishing 4th,only due to the degrading performances and AVB’s adamance to stick with useless meireles and bosingwa..

Bad news-eden hazard hopes he joins tottenham. When the player comes out and confesses his liking, its like quite close to happening..

No he didn't

He just said Spurs were an option when asked.

Even if we don't get Hazard

Its not the end of the world we are bound to get one of these exceptional talents and to be frank I would rather pin my hopes to the Brazilians Moura for sure! and Willian as an addition…

by Mourinho on Feb 14, 2012 10:04 PM GMT up reply actions

Willian doesn’t have the potential that Hazard has. Even Villas Boas said something like that Willian doesn’t fit in his long term project for the club. That they were merely interested in him for the small term and the deal didn’t go through because they didnt want to spend more than the bid they had made. I highly doubt we will see Willian join us in the summer.

by The Bison on Feb 14, 2012 10:07 PM GMT up reply actions

Willian is not my first choice but for his price tag him

and another player in a similar range could be deadly. Remember we wanted him just not at the inflated price.

I'm not actually worried about Newcastle or Liverpool

And I still think we’re a better team than Arsenal. We’ve been consistently under-performing, but they’re just about performing. AVB needs to shake some things up and actually start getting the best out of these players. But the pieces are there for us to end up even in third place.

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 14, 2012 7:50 PM GMT reply actions

I was fairly confident, until I looked at our remaining schedule

Those away fixtures look menacing, to say the least.

But we certainly hold our own fate in our own hands. Three of our last five scheduled fixtures are against these three teams (v. Newcastle, @ Arsenal, @ Liverpool).

by DPeezy on Feb 14, 2012 7:58 PM GMT up reply actions

I've just had a look at our remaining schedule..

And I’d say we’ve got 5 ‘tricky’ games and 8 that we should win. Looking at Arsenal’s remaining fixtures, I would say the same about them. On the basis that I still think we’re a better team than Arsenal, I’m reasonably confident that we’ll take 4th.

by deg0ey on Feb 14, 2012 8:06 PM GMT up reply actions

Yikes

and two of those are away fixtures. Anfield isn’t the easiest place to win. And considering Arsenal schooled us on our home turf, they might feel confident at home… but I’d like to hope we can exact revenge on them. :)

Finish 3rd, are you ridiculously optimistic or just having a laugh?

We are as close in terms of points to Everton in 10th as we are to Spurs in 3rd!On current form Chelsea could struggle to get over the 60 point mark, things need to pick up quick!

by conorjmartin on Feb 14, 2012 8:24 PM GMT up reply actions

None of the above

Notice I say “could” not should or will. Just merely pointing out that our players are, on paper, more talented than any of the teams not from Manchester, and if things get firing (like they did around this time last season), we could still catch them.

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 14, 2012 8:34 PM GMT up reply actions

Would need a really hot run!

Can’t see Spurs dropping much more that the 10 pts they have over us now! Also I’m not sure we have more talent than Spurs at the minute, they are really good these days!

by conorjmartin on Feb 14, 2012 8:59 PM GMT up reply actions

Spurs have some tough fixtures ahead.

Arsenal, Man U, Everton, Stoke than us…. I could see them getting opts out of those games.

by Mourinho on Feb 14, 2012 10:07 PM GMT up reply actions

By the way, found this bit.....

East Stand Lower (South)
FAMILY AREA ONLY
Tickets in this area are adjacent to the away supporters.

I was just wondering about how much tickets cost for this weekends game. Seems there’s plenty of availability. But to the point, I’m wondering why one would put the women and children by the opposing fans? Is this on the theory that women and children will be less likely to antagonize the away fans - and that away fans would be less likely to do the same to women and children?

Using the graph.

Chelsea is destined for a HUGE spike upwards. Seeing how we are nearing the final stretch of the race. We may actually make it, specially if we beat Arsenal. Not draw, but beat them.

I'm going to cry

if we don’t finish 4th.

I hate Arsenal so much, omg. Cant they just die. WE NEED 4TH PLACE.

Fourth - I want top 3 ! ;)

Not worried, think we’ll finish 3 rd to be honest – Arsenal and Spurs will both ‘implode’ soon and LFC a few bad results ( dropped points at home) and their fan base will be “baying” for blood!! ;) (you heard it here first!)

The complete bottom would have to fall out..

…and I just don’t see that happening. To many other things would have to happen with other teams for that to even be close to a reality.

My current preferred outcome is...

1. Redknapp (having already said he’s not prepared to do two jobs until the end of the season) takes the England post in the next week or two.

2. Daniel Levy, colossal tightwad that he is, decides to leave appointing a new manager until the summer believing that it will be a buyers market in the off-season.

3. Under the guidance of Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond, the Tottenham team become shit, almost overnight because they no longer have anybody to tell them to ‘just fucking run around a bit’.

4. Robin Van Persie somehow breaks himself whilst trying to single-handedly win the league.

5. Andy Carroll accidentally sits on Luis Suarez, breaking 3 of his ribs and puncturing a lung.

6. Chelsea, capitalising on the failure of these other 3 teams manage to finish in 3rd place, securing automatic qualification to next years CL.

7. Newcastle, almost by default, finish 4th in the league, but get knocked out of the CL in the subsequent qualifying round.

8. Chelsea sign Hazard in the summer to give them more creative awesomeness.

9. Torres somehow becomes a good striker again.

10. Scotland are granted independence from the rest of the UK.

11. The Scottish government authorise a nuclear test on Manchester, eliminating all traces of football from the area.

12. Chelsea go on to win the league comfortably for the next decade and finally have some ‘history’ to shut up those Scouse wankers.

I’d quite like for this to happen, but I think point 9 is a little unrealistic.

I like that point #9

is about a #9… I feel like that was some poetic something you did there.

Overall, I am quite on board with this plan. I’m pretty sure that Roman’s money could influence the last three steps somehow.
