Everton Vs. Chelsea: Player Ratings

WELL YOU MAKE ME SAD TOO OKAY?

With the Guardian getting rid of their chalkboards (sad!) I'm going to have to figure out a different way of working up match analyses. Until I do, however, I'm going to compromise and just do player ratings. These are entirely subjective and don't mean a whole lot, so don't complain too much when I say something you disagree with.

The scale is from 0-10, with 5 as Premier League average (and I'd consider a 6 the minimum acceptable from a Chelsea player). These grades are completely uninformed by statistics. Go ahead and add yours in the comments.

Star-divide

Petr Cech: Helpless for the two Everton goals, but his distribution was absolutely appalling and he made things far more dicey than they needed to be when the hosts did go forward. A continuation of a fairly miserable season. 3.

Ashley Cole: The left back returned from suspension and promptly did not much of anything, failing to get into the attack until the second half as well as doing virtually nothing to contain Landon Donovan on the Everton right. Mostly at fault for the second goal, and also nearly caused another with an awful pass to David Luiz in the first half. I'm giving him an extra point because he got hurt and I feel sorry for him. 3.

David Luiz: His usual self going forward - he was possibly Chelsea's best attacking player, which is depressing on many levels - but awful at the back. These weren't even David Luiz's normal mental errors, which we're at least used to. Instead, he just seemed to be half-assing it out there for the first time in a Chelsea kit. Yikes. 4.

Branislav Ivanovic: Not a great performance from the Serbian, who would probably have been better off as a right back. However, it also wasn't a completely awful one - he couldn't have done much about Steven Pienaar's goal and I couldn't find that much to ding him for for the rest of the match. Still, should have done better. 5.

Jose Bosingwa: It's amazing that less than a week after shutting down one of the Premier League's most dangerous wingers while playing out of position Bosingwa could have put in that display. Responsible for the first goal. Caused a stack overflow error on Opta's 'incomplete crosses' counter. Abysmal. 1.

Michael Essien: Hey, he was alright. Perhaps it's just fuzzy happy feelings from the Bison being back, but he did his job in the first half before tiring in the second. One of the few black shirts who looked like they could be playing for a Champions League team. 6.

Frank Lampard: Unlucky on the first goal but blew a prime chance to equalise in the first half. Chelsea's possession play mostly went through him, and he was calm and composed on the ball - but did very little with it nonetheless. Not bad, but certainly not good. 5.

Raul Meireles: Set the tone when he played a ludicrous backheel to give the ball away within the first couple of minutes. Lackadaisical in possession, non-existent in defence. Three months ago Meireles was one of Chelsea's better players. Since, he's looked like he'd have trouble in League One. 2.

Juan Mata: Got himself in promising positions only to float pointless crosses in despite it being manifestly obvious that nobody was going to convert them. Had a couple of good moments on the attack, but nowhere near what we're used to from the former Valencia man. As ever, as goes Mata so too do Chelsea. 4.

Fernando Torres: Stick a fork in him. He's done. Only avoids a one because I can barely remember us having the ball near Tim Howard's box. 2.

Daniel Sturridge: Not the first winger who's been outmatched by Leighton Baines, and although his movement was intelligent throughout the game nothing really came off for him. Should have scored in the first half, didn't. 4.

Substitutes: Incomplete.

Should we have a rating for AVB too? Not that I think he was horrendous or anything.

No motivation in these players. He’s gotta get them pumped up. That much he is at fault for.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 12:03 AM GMT reply actions

No

Managers are much harder to grade. I don’t feel comfortable grading AVB at all.

by Graham MacAree on Feb 12, 2012 12:04 AM GMT up reply actions

I really don't see motivation as the problem

We don’t have any sort of ability to break down an opponent who has parked the bus on us, that much is becoming increasingly obvious. We conceded an early goal and the bus was parked…at that point it was less about motivation and 100% due to inability to figure out the defense. I wish I could say this was simple failure to adjust tactically, but we just don’t seem to have the personnel to break down the defense without leaving ourselves woefully exposed to the counter.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 12, 2012 2:08 AM GMT up reply actions

I thought the same thing. Everton got really lucky with that deflection. Had it not happened,

we wouldn’t have had to deal with a parked bus (our biggest weakness, lol) for 85 minutes. Still, is it too much to ask for the players to look like they’re trying?

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 2:55 AM GMT up reply actions

what do you think is the best technique for breaking down a parked bus?

rapid passing and one-two’s in the final third? a dribbler who can draw defenders and find his teammates’ runs? (this i feel we have in Mata). good wingers who can spread out the defense and create gaps? i’m asking not in a sarcastic way but b/c i’d like to hear your thoughts on this.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 3:09 AM GMT up reply actions

This is what AVB thinks (if you didn't already know):
You have to provoke them with the ball, which is something most teams can’t do. I cannot understand it. It’s an essential factor in the game.

At this time of ultra-low defensive block teams, you will have to learn how to provoke them with the ball. It’s the ball they want, so you have to defy them using the ball as a carrot.

Louis Van Gaal’s idea is one of continuous circulation, one side to the other, until the moment that, when you change direction, an space opens up inside and you go through it.

So, he provokes the opponent with horizontal circulation of the ball, until the moment that the opponent will start to pressure out of despair. What I believe in is to challenge the rival by driving the ball into him.

That’s something Pep Guardiola believes is decisive. And that’s something that Henk ten Cate also took to Avram Grant’s Chelsea. He took it with him form Frank Rijkaard’s Barcelona. We did it differently at Chelsea under Mourinho.

Our attacking construction was different, with the ball going directly to the full-backs or midfielders. With Ten Cate, play was started with John Terry or Ricardo Carvalho, to invite the opponent’s pressure. Then you had one less opponent in the next step of construction.

He mentions Mou’s and Van Gaal’s way, but not his.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 3:15 AM GMT up reply actions

thanks for bringing this back up

remember reading that before the season. certainly the passing was a whole lot better at the beginning of the season. Luiz seems to be the one bringing the ball up but there was just a horrible disjointedness to the midfield. Meireles was passing quite well earlier in the season but now is awful. Lampard was good but is simply not that energetic anymore. Essien was good. our passing tempo and circulation are just not reflecting AVB’s philosophy right now, and i think a lot of that is on the players.

you are very correct, chelsea always seems so clueless in breaking down the opponent defense. This I av always noticed about us for a while now which is one of the reason for scanty goals. We lack the creative mindset like man u and arsenal*. The killer instinct is not there anymore for goals.

Very fair ratings.

I wanted to rip my hair out during the game. It was like they didn’t even show up. Giving up possession every time they got it, missing clear shots, and letting a good but not amazing Everton team make us look like fools. Please let this be a wake-up call. This team is not working.

You were more generous to some than I'd have been

that’s all I have to offer right now. Yay- short post from me!

Did Bosingwa even deserve a 1?

Could have just left it at abysmal!Think Cech did ok as a sweeper at times,I didn’t see the whole game but I didn’t see any serious errors from him so I’d give him a 5. I think the ratings for the centre backs are a bit generous there, I though they were all over the place at times!

by conorjmartin on Feb 12, 2012 12:15 AM GMT reply actions

At least we've got a couple of weeks to figure things out

Before we have to play another league game. It’d be nice not to get knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League, but at this point, they’re not exactly a priority.

by deg0ey on Feb 12, 2012 12:20 AM GMT reply actions

Winning the CL and finishing 5th wouldn't be the end of the world

But it’s much less likely than us not winning the Champions League, regardless of how much effort we put into it.

String theory???

Until you mentioned it I had no idea what it was so I just downloaded a paper on it and it’s way way over my head. I’ve saved the paper nonetheless, maybe I’ll find time to read it during our next game, damn if only I had it to read yesterday.

by Ten Bells on Feb 12, 2012 3:08 PM GMT up reply actions

Backline should have been:

Ivanovic – Cahill – Luiz – Cole

Poor form AVB.

by ADL Celt on Feb 12, 2012 12:46 AM GMT reply actions

The trick with Bosingwa is

to not let him get used to playing in one place otherwise he gets lazy.

by nsleepy3 on Feb 12, 2012 12:56 AM GMT up reply actions

i think he's more careful on the left

and therefore more focused. plus as someone pointed out a left-footed player on his left will be cutting into Bosingwa’s right. also offensively, Bosingwa loves to cut in so on the left he’s cutting in to his stronger right.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:50 AM GMT up reply actions

I thought Lampard was a non entity and that Meireles at least tried at times

This is are my ratings:
Cech – 5
Cole – 4
Luiz – 6
Ivan – 7
Boz – 3
Ess – 5
Raul – 6
Lamps – 4
Studge – 5
Mata – 6
Nando – 4

by zweiosterei on Feb 12, 2012 1:33 AM GMT reply actions

wow

we should have won or at least drawn the match to give them that much point. Graham’s rating is fair.

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 2:00 AM GMT up reply actions

We definitely wouldn't have won the game with my ratings

Three players were average (rating 5) , three players were below average (4), one player was much below average (3), three players were just above average (6), and one player was much above average (7). I don’t know maybe we could have drawn, lol.

by zweiosterei on Feb 12, 2012 4:05 AM GMT up reply actions

FUCK

this is a low point, and this team better fuckin respond. cannot get Drogs Terry and Ramires back fast enough.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:16 AM GMT reply actions

Replace Di Matteo

He is giving wrong suggestion to AVB on subs. What the fuck was Lukaku for Mata? Not only that, there are too many wrong subs all seasons…

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 2:22 AM GMT up reply actions

um ... what?

do you really think AVB just delegates substitution decisionmaking to Di Matteo?

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:26 AM GMT up reply actions

No,

But at least DM should suggest what is wrong if AVB is doing it alone.

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 2:29 AM GMT up reply actions

LOL

AVB: “so what do you think is wrong Robbie?”
DM: “well our fullbacks are shite, our keeper has lost the plot, our midfield is shite, and our striker is a steaming pile of shite. also Essien just came back from a 6 month injury layoff.”
AVB: “ok let’s take off Essien.”

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:37 AM GMT up reply actions   1 recs

It was a must win for us

So there was no risk until 69th minutes and suddenly he felt there might be risk to keep continuing with Essien?? And Mata?? He was the only hope to create something at the end, instead he played 3 center forwards with no creative mf.
And what was meireles offering through out the match? few hollywood passes??

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 3:02 AM GMT up reply actions

i agree you can question the substitutions

though i personally feel they had some logic. Essien was off b/c he was tired and not at full fitness. Mata was having a poor game. i don’t think we were gonna win at that point but fair enough questioning that. i was more responding to your portrayal of AVB/Di Matteo’s work process, which honestly neither of us knows. but i would think they have some dialogue.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 3:06 AM GMT up reply actions

They MUST

Because DM is the only one during the match to whom AVB can turn and ask for suggestion,
Forget about decisions they made during the match today.. always poor in this season.
I love AVB and don’t want chelsea to fire him and keep changing managers. But AVB should finish 4th with the current payers. They are capable of more then that.

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 3:19 AM GMT up reply actions

i agree

i think that’s the minimum he needs to achieve to stick and see out his overall plan.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 3:20 AM GMT up reply actions

For What??

CL? finishing CL spot should be the priority,

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 3:21 AM GMT up reply actions

For what? For the rest of the PL campaign. If Mata got hurt in the 90th

minute of what seems like a certain loss, what would’ve been the point of even keeping him on the pitch?

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 3:23 AM GMT up reply actions

Erm, it was 0-0 when Dong scored. We were

2-0 down and were did fuck all the whole game.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 3:49 AM GMT up reply actions

Last week man utd were 3-0 down,

And I was over the moon until the first penalty, But… you know what happened..

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:00 AM GMT up reply actions

Did they play as bad as we did today (for the whole game, no less)?

You’re right though. A couple of hilariously dodgy pens in our favor could’ve totally started a come back.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 4:03 AM GMT up reply actions

No, we were poor..

Why I mentioned Sunderland game is that there was absolutely no hope sunderland win the game against the league leaders until the last seconds. Football is game of uncertainty, anything can happen. Its very sad feeling that we gave up too early and remove our most creative players, mata and essien

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:13 AM GMT up reply actions

Yes we can

What I am trying to say is removing your players whom you depend most when there is 15 mins + extra time is clearly the lack of wining mentality

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:21 AM GMT up reply actions

And I disagree on a pretty fundamental level, I guess

I prefer playing the odds to trusting that we’ll somehow pull something out

by Graham MacAree on Feb 12, 2012 4:23 AM GMT up reply actions

Yes

I want my team fight until the last second, I accepted the defeat at Loftus road proudly

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:26 AM GMT up reply actions

One goal at 0-0 wins you a game, no

matter how much time left. One goal at 2-0 with a handful of minutes left does fuck all. What’s not to get?

Not to mention we didnt look like scoring whatsoever. At least Sunderland looked threatning on the counter all game.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 4:18 AM GMT up reply actions

For What you protect the players?

our main goal in this season is to finish fourth! try to win until the final whistle.. there is nothing to loose. we are not fighting for title..

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:23 AM GMT up reply actions

Protect them from getting hurt, that's what.

Why risk our most important player’s fitness fighting a losing battle? Imagine if Mata got a long term injury in the last 5 mins of the match. Not only is this match screwed, but so is the rest of the season.

We have differing attitudes concerning “mentality”, we might as well just agree to disagree right now.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 4:32 AM GMT up reply actions

Players can get in practice matches.

remember essien was injured and out for more then half of the season while playing for nothing? you protect players when you are in comfortable position, not in must win game..

by Mregmi on Feb 12, 2012 4:42 AM GMT up reply actions

he probably sees it more than anyone

remember when Drogs was here we all wondered why he was played twice a week while Nando didn’t get a sniff of the pitch. problem is now his backup is a very raw 19 year old.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:27 AM GMT up reply actions

i think Lukaku needs several seasons

but agreed i would rather have him start than Torres now. at least he’s hungry and gives his all.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:36 AM GMT up reply actions

oh wow

thanks for that. i just kinda assumed he was 19 b/c we signed him at 18 and i thought he would have hit his birthday since. DOUBLE REINFORCES the point. i think he’s gonna be excellent but needs several years of development. hope we find a striker to bridge the gap.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:42 AM GMT up reply actions

Question...

for all those that watched the Swansea match… was this one better or worse? I mean this in a completely relative way, of course, since both were bad.

by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 2:27 AM GMT reply actions

Oy

Let’s hope this is the lowest point of the season? Pleeeeease… with sugar on top, Chelsea?

by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 2:30 AM GMT up reply actions

This was easily worse

The Swansea game had life after 45 minutes. There were no signs of a pulse from minutes one through 90 at Goodison.

by cwel87 on Feb 12, 2012 2:30 AM GMT up reply actions

thanks for posting

it’s only one game/discussion but there are hints of why maybe AVB hasn’t played him. some intimations of good through balls but knocks on his overall game, ability to handle defensive responsibilities and the overall physicality.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:40 AM GMT up reply actions

He clearly wasn't ready defensively

However, they’re underrating just how good his passing was

by Graham MacAree on Feb 12, 2012 2:44 AM GMT up reply actions

not having seen the game i was only going by their comments.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:44 AM GMT up reply actions

nice! thanks

but do you think the defensive/physical aspect is the main reason AVB put him in the basket. every time i’ve seen Josh play he’s certainly looked like he could improve our passing and incisiveness.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:48 AM GMT up reply actions

Doesn't look like...

they rate him over there. Hopefully he gets continuous playing time. Does anyone know how Kakuta played today? Saw that he got a goal

by Graham MacAree on Feb 12, 2012 2:51 AM GMT up reply actions

and I read that he also had a nice shot that hit the post. Hope he can help the first team next year

he has so much talent. such verve when he’s on.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:52 AM GMT up reply actions

Sure would be a nice surprise if Kakuta developed into something amazing

He’s been much ado about nothing for so long, I’ve pretty much given up on him.

by DPeezy on Feb 12, 2012 4:19 AM GMT up reply actions

Not a popular opinion but I think Josh could've done better with Villa's defensively minded

and hard working midfield behind. His skills would stand out from a mile away too (Barry Bannan looks good tbf). I can see why that wouldn’t help his defensive game though.

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 3:01 AM GMT up reply actions

Btw, they dont really seem to appreciate his through balls. It must be standard procedure

for them to get like 50 t-balls a match. We could’ve used some of em though….

by Valens on Feb 12, 2012 3:02 AM GMT up reply actions

i know the whole team sucked

and they all deserve blame. but i must say i am really sick of Fernando Torres. with what little he has given to the team, the one thing we should be expecting at this point is consistent effort. he should be falling over himself trying to make something happen. instead he is just falling over himself period. the same man who famously beasted Nemanja Vidic is regularly getting knocked over by any old defender, losing the ball continuously, and seeming to avoid crosses at all costs unless one lands on his head for a pathetic parry straight to the goalie. i watched his runs or lack thereof today especially, and he seemed to spend his time drifting diagonally on the outside left corner of the box as if the inside were filled with dangerous quicksand. service is obviously important but a striker has to make himself available with decisive runs and he wasn’t. this period w/ Drogs at the AfCON was Torres’s opportunity to step up, get into form and show his worth. instead he’s played like a bashful little girl, and that is completely unacceptable. i have seen squirrels with more fighting spirit than Torres, and frankly i’d rather put a squirrel in a no. 9 jersey on the field at this point. at least it’d be lively.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:33 AM GMT reply actions

Sooo...

I feel like you have posted this several times here, and in a couple other threads today… and in agreement with a bunch of others. No one has argued saying otherwise (that I saw at least… I may have missed it if it did happen). Is there a reason you keep posting it? It’s not that I am saying you don’t have a right to feel like this… it’s just that saying it again and again doesnt change anything… and it’s about as done as Torres and might need to share the fork.

I’m not trying to be rude, so apologies if that is how this is taken.. a little more cheeky, is maybe my aim. But still… I just don’t get what people get out of spending so much energy on players they don’t like and that they just want off the team. Why not, on a day like this especially, focus on your positives. For one- you’ve got some of your favored players returning soon, and you probably wont have to endure Torres anymore. Bertrand got a little time, Lukaku saw a little time. JT and Rami should be back soon….

by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 2:51 AM GMT up reply actions

i'm expressing myself.

i don’t take it as rude or cheeky even but considering the amount you write and the relative topicality of a lot of it, i don’t see why you need to point this out about my posts. it’s not that i don’t “like Torres,” it’s that i feel it’s ridiculous that Chelsea’s No. 9 is so bad. so i decided to articulate it, several times it’s true. that’s it. as for focusing on the positives, i do, though there was very little to take from this game.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 2:55 AM GMT up reply actions

also

didn’t you mention that you only made a one-year commitment to supporting Chelsea? i’m not saying that to try and knock or question you, simply saying that you might not FEEL the discrete point i make in the above post which i feel is different from saying “Torres sucks” or whatever. i don’t feel he has put his heart on the pitch to earn the jersey. the Chelsea No. 9 or any number is not given it is earned. i sleep in different knockoff Chelsea jerseys every night. the spirit of this team means a lot to me. when Ramires came he was knocked during his early adjustment but people had his corner b/c he left his heart out on the pitch every game. i think w/ Torres the same consistent effort is not there and that is incredibly disappointing.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 3:14 AM GMT up reply actions

It was just a suggestion

I can tell it bothers you… it just seems like you get yourself more worked up about it the more you talk about it. You don’t have to listen to me, of course. And you aren’t the only one… I’d say the same for anyone that dwells on anything like this… the same goes for the folks that continue with the same statements about wanting AVB out or whatever. But, to each their own.

I didnt say I made a one year commitment… I said that after watching the EPL for sometime, I only settled on Chelsea this year. Yeah… that means I don’t have the history of being a Chelsea fan that followed through the recent winning years, and I do imagine this comes as a shocking year, and Torres’s failures here are all the more absurd given the success of other strikers. I guess I am actually quite happy in that case, because maybe it makes this poor display today easier to swallow. I feel differently about some players as a result as well, because I don’t really have the glory days for reference. So, you’re right that I don’t have the same feeling, and sorry if my post aggravated things further.

I don’t disagree that he was poor today- he was acting like a brat and I thought he should have been subbed at the half. I probably just haven’t felt the same as some folks here about some of his past performances, but turns out that Drogba is back soon, Torres will be put out to pasture and sold shortly because he didn’t perform as needed during this past month.

people not giving effort always bothers me

and especially from Chelsea’s no. 9. it’s not just about success it’s effort. i think you’re overstating your impression of how i feel and whether i dwell on it or not. you’re free to feel whatever you like but i don’t really try to psychoanalyze you or anyone so i find it more amusing that you feel compelled to try with me.

ultimately if you look at the body of what i posted today and in general it’s not purely about Torres, nor am i in some kind of Torres-hating funk. i’m chilling and gonna get ready to go out. i love football and i love Chelsea and i don’t question anyone else’s fanhood so don’t take what i misunderstood about yours as offensive. i like to analyze the football itself and i don’t really get caught up in the other conversations here so i just thought it was odd that you felt compelled to try and address my posts specifically. i just feel like if your attitude is, “to each his own,” why even bother to try and talk about my posts. i mean if i wanted to talk about your posting topics i think i’d have something to say but you’re free to do whatever you want, as am i.

if you looked at the body of my posts you would see i am generally quite positive about Chelsea’s future.

by dojothecat on Feb 12, 2012 3:56 AM GMT reply actions

Not trying to psychoanalyze... that would be a big overstatement of my post.

I made an assumption. Clearly I was wrong. I wasn’t trying to imply you are a Torres hater without anything of value to say on the topic… I just dont get the banging on about it or anything else that sucks. Same with folks that go on about Malouda, AVB, or whatever. So your post was the wrong one to respond to, and for that I am sorry. I don’t get to tell people how to be a fan, and that wasn’t what I was trying for. If that is how my posts have came across, then I apologize.

“To each his own” was literally meant as that. We’re allowed to have different views about things, I don’t see why that’s a problem. I don’t feel the need to tell you that I feel differently about things further, because where does that get us other than taking it personally? You’re entitled to your thoughts, you’ve posted them.. it’s done. I wasn’t trying to start an argument with you… and not even really a discussion on that topic (clearly I failed on this)… it was a suggestion that you were free to throw out, and you’ve done so. I’ll actually probably refrain from posting in response to certain folks here, because it would seem I’m not clear in my postings as to what I am trying to get across, and despite that, I’m not out to cause problems.

the players

Are professionals, therefore they shouldn’t need motivation. If they were about to play in their final high school JV game then yes they might need motivation, but their not, we shouldn’t put the players tensity or lack thereof on AVB

delusional AVB & losers in the team

we are soo shit.we were fecking pathetic. when Cahill was so good against utd, then why the hell AVB had to tinker? Now I realise what a massive job it was for wenger to finish in the top 4 with his shitty team every year. play piazon.,play lukaku, play bertie. enough of these portugese shit.

I kinda agree with Ruud.

"It’s a difficult situation also for the rest of the players because I think that they all like Torres, they all want him to score"

"But if he doesn’t, what does it do to the result? What does it do to the morale of the rest of the players?"-Ruud Gullit.

After all morale is also a transitive thing.Even if the focus is on the team scoring more than torres scoring,it is an emotional issue that your team member is struggling so much.It affects even more when even the team is struggling.

All teams go through such issues. But a certain result or a performance or a rivalry or a players performance may lift the morale to an entire new level.Donovan did it with everton in his first spell, and their new signings have done the same.

So i still have a lot of hopes when drogba returns, because he brings with himself that aura and confidence(only if he pulls off performances like ones against valenica). So i’m still optimistic for the return of ramires and drogba..It is like when we got lampard back last year.Same player but the timing changes the impact.

If we struggle even then,I’d then be surely shattered.

by dblues on Feb 12, 2012 12:16 PM GMT reply actions

I'm not sure how much the Torres not-scoring impact is

on the morale of the whole team. I mean, as a single factor. Sure, it doesn’t help. But it doesn’t seem they are so desperate to concentrate so much on him alone that they neglect everything else around them

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 12, 2012 2:13 PM GMT up reply actions

If he always played like yesterday - probably

but just last week he played OK. Not very good, not disastrous either. And the previous games it’s much like that. A good game here, a bad game there, some OK games then. I can’t imagine how that would affect team morale?

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 12, 2012 4:38 PM GMT up reply actions

by the fact that the striker himself is not scoring.

Even if the overall aim is that the team scores, one is not entirely confident when the stiker is not firing, infact totally opposite. How does it not affect your confidence?

Just as,if the back four is abysmal the midfielders would not be able to do their job entirely confidently knowing that behind them lies a weak link.

by dblues on Feb 12, 2012 5:49 PM GMT up reply actions

I wouldn't compare a nonscoring striker to an abysmal back four

since the defense is the backbone of every team. If your defense leaks in goal in goal out it destroys morale, for sure. However the striker in that regard is a much weaker link … maybe even the weakest. But the fact there is so much attention and spotlight centered on our CF especially is a much bigger factor than the mere reality he isn’t scoring

Ashley needs to go in the summer

nothing but bad attitude and sloppy play from him nowadays. Bring in Bertrand and PvA (who’s always impressed me when wearing blue) to rotate in that spot. Iva on the right side. :)

Swede that like the Houston Texans and Chelsea FC

by Fredrik Nyman on Feb 12, 2012 12:29 PM GMT reply actions

yeah I totalyagree.

But if Chelsea were to sell they would go out and buy a new player instead of using either Bertrand or van Aanholt to replace Ashley. they would say they weren’t ready to replace ashley at left back and the academy would never be used. it keeps happening with Chelsea great youth academy and reserves but its easier to use Romans millions to buy a proven player than to give a youn player a shot, and I’m not talking about the last 5-10 mins of a game I mean actualy start them for once. you think??

by Shane C on Feb 12, 2012 6:06 PM GMT up reply actions

We haven't had a great academy and youth team

The best players we’ve produced in the last few years have been guys like Sinclair, Mancienne, and Borini. There are guys coming through that might change that, but we didn’t have nearly enough talent to call ourselves a great (even just good) academy in years past.

by Stephen Schmidt on Feb 12, 2012 6:54 PM GMT up reply actions

Not really.

Drogba is strong mentally. He isn’t a mentally weak player like Torres.

Drogba is a honeybadger. Drogba doesn’t care, Drogba doesn’t give a shit. lol.

I know this is late but

I HATE Ivanovic at center back, he’s been at least in the running for the top 11 at right back with Bos out so I do like him as a player. It just seems like he never has chemistry with anyone other than terry at cb, and he’s not quick enough to make up for errors in positioning.

by b8b8j on Feb 13, 2012 12:12 AM GMT reply actions

Cahill should start at CB with Luiz/JT.
Ivanovic plays alot better at RB than CB.
Bosingwa is useless in defence, maybe convert him into a RW?
Bertrand will probably leave CFC soon, just like Sinclair, Borini did last season.

by shakm on Feb 13, 2012 1:02 AM GMT up reply actions

Why would you want to convert Bosingwa to right wing?

He can’t cross to save his life and every time he gets the ball in a position to cross he seems determined to wait until the opposition defence get organised!

re: Bos, I hope u are kidding

the man has 2 left legs, and both are no good. Let’s sell him for God’s sake. Is there a fund to pay for the other team to take him? I am willing to contribute.

by MrkS on Feb 13, 2012 3:49 AM GMT up reply actions

What do we do moving forward.

With Drogs back, I imagine Torres will hopefully not play another minute unless he absolutely must. Play your youth. Give them an opportunity to gain experience. Play Lukaku, Romeu, and Bertrand. Those players have not been presumably tainted with the disease plaguing the veterans and have serious upside. Stop picking players based on their reputation, but reward those on merit. AVB must change his gameday strategy more drastically…why not move either Sturridge or Mata to center mid now at this point?!?! Just try it MAN from the start! Jesus! It’s sad that Steven F-in Pienaar was by far most creative player on the pitch Sat.
