I'm disappointed with the exclusion of Cahill (and the inclusion of Bosingwa)

I thought he had a good partnership with DL

I may not know much about life, but what I do know has taught me to believe in Chelsea.

by CanadianBlue on Feb 11, 2012 2:15 PM GMT reply actions

ugh

iugh i thought we were going to play a 4-2-3-1? why 4-3-3? and why bosingwa? was I the only one who thought Cahill-Luiz played well together? why wouldn’t he want to keep that partnership?

by Kunta Kinte on Feb 11, 2012 2:23 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

if this is 4-2-3-1

how will it work? with lampard behind nando?

by blue_is_the_colour on Feb 11, 2012 2:26 PM GMT up reply actions

hopefully it is

unless raul was on the left with frank playing deep with essien and mata behind nando. I think i might prefer that, depending on raul’s ability to play on the left, just because i prefer mata behind nando and i would like to see how lamps plays in a deeper role

by blue_is_the_colour on Feb 11, 2012 2:30 PM GMT up reply actions

I might've trotted out the same back four as last week

Bossy on the left, Cahill / Luiz in the middle, Branners on the right. But a minor quibble.

And I’ll definitely take this midfield three over one featuring Malouda. I just wish it was a 4231 Lampard CAM than a 4-3-3

But overall, I am not super miffed about this lineup, for once. Let’s just go score some goals lads!

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 11, 2012 2:26 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

I know it was an emergency

But it worked pretty well! And ash needs more days off. Dude’s way overworked

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 11, 2012 2:27 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

So I guess playing what works at the beginning of two games in a row is too much to ask, eh?

Why does AVB has this seemingly ridiculous infatuation with the 4-3-3?

Eh, I suppose at least it doesn’t require Malouda starting. Welcome back, Super Frank!

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 2:28 PM GMT reply actions

Very disappointed that the 4-2-3-1 has been dropped again!

It is the only formation that Chelsea look good going forward with!I think it will be yet another game performance with lots of long shots into the stands and slow build up play!

by conorjmartin on Feb 11, 2012 2:37 PM GMT reply actions

Could it not be a 4-2-3-1 where Lampard is the CAM and Mata is playing on the left?

Cech—————————
Bosingwa—Ivanovic—Luiz—Cole
-———-Essien——Raul——————
Sturridge——-Lampard———Mata
-———————-Torres———————-

by madhavb on Feb 11, 2012 2:37 PM GMT reply actions

This is definitely a strong midfield

All three of them can shoot, and hold possession, and defend. But they’re also all pretty slow and not particularly creative. I’m not sure where the goals come from here. But we’ll boss possession.

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 11, 2012 2:45 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

Essien's quick enough

He’s the BISON,dammit!! :P and they’ve all got a good passing range-anyway,hope for the best. And hope we don’t get caught on the counter.

Indeed,

Alright everyone...

let’s get a win here. They’ve shown sometimes against the odds, and maybe even despite strange lineups, formations and prior results, that they’ve been able to pull out some wins. I sure hope that this game is one of those!

by alynne4307 on Feb 11, 2012 2:48 PM GMT reply actions

Wanted a Mikel start

But works,I guess. Meireles-Lampard combo though…it’ll be better with Essien around, think he can free them up. But for some reason I think this reverts back to playing Essien defensively…which sucks.

by Avinash Mohan on Feb 11, 2012 2:52 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

He may sub in

he hasnt played in awhile… he may need to ease into fitness again, as well as the game. The formation would probably shift a little.

Yeah, but Mikel's been training all week

While Lamps just came back two days ago. Oh well. I just wanted Mikel holding with Essien in front and one of Lamps/Meireles next to him.

K Torres

wrong kind of fights to be doing. Stop.

by alynne4307 on Feb 11, 2012 3:47 PM GMT reply actions

None of the little player changes will make a difference

The problem is structural. Drogba has been terrible this year, Torres can’t score. No striker will be able to score in this system.

by Toronto78 on Feb 11, 2012 3:49 PM GMT reply actions

They have been terrible

But there has also been horrible service. The ball movement is slow, our midfield doesn’t have a single creative player, and AVB’s system is terrible.

by Toronto78 on Feb 11, 2012 3:51 PM GMT up reply actions

what about his system is terrible?

besides the terrible players trying to implement it?

by dojothecat on Feb 11, 2012 3:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Because it doesn't make sense for the players we have

Most of our players are playing in a system that simply makes no sense for them (i.e. Torres with no AM, Sturridge wide right instead of central, Lampard central instead of attacking, etc…)

by Toronto78 on Feb 11, 2012 3:59 PM GMT up reply actions

so it's the players not the system

obviously these players are not gonna all stick around

by dojothecat on Feb 11, 2012 4:01 PM GMT up reply actions

"The ball movement is slow, our midfield doesn’t have a single creative player"

That was also the case 5 years ago and Drogba still managed to score a few…

by deg0ey on Feb 11, 2012 3:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Not even remotely similar

Chelsea’s midfield 5 years ago was Lampard in his prime, Ballack, Makalele, and Essien in his prime. That’s 3 creative midfielders and a completely different system (4-1-2-1-2)

by Toronto78 on Feb 11, 2012 3:57 PM GMT up reply actions

That''s not 3 creative midfielders at all...

That’s 3 very physical controlling midfielders. And it was a 4-3-3 then, the same as it is now.

by deg0ey on Feb 11, 2012 3:58 PM GMT up reply actions

It's always been 4-3-3

And when have Essien or Ballack ever been confused for ‘creative’?

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 3:59 PM GMT up reply actions

Drogba has been good in big games

and he helps Sturridge play better. Torres has had good glimpses as an attacking midfielder, and has been absolutely atrocious as a striker.

by dojothecat on Feb 11, 2012 3:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Drogba really hasn't been bad at all

He had one utterly abysmal game and has otherwise, at worst, been sub-par. Torres, on the other hand, has been atrocious.

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 3:53 PM GMT up reply actions

Those straight stats are not good

Drogba at least manages to create opportunities for Sturridge. Torres falls down in the box and complains to the ref incessantly.

And, of course, when you don’t count CL fixtures, yes, Drogba hasn’t been exemplary. We should rule out all good performances in order to make our points stand!

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 3:58 PM GMT up reply actions

This half sucked

We’ll be lucky if we get a draw, the way we’re playing…

by Iced O on Feb 11, 2012 3:49 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

So much for my thinking that we'd really

be looking to set last week right. I wish we could sub the whole team, lol.

That said, Lukaku on for Torres. Cahill on for Bosingwa and move Bran over? Or Ash off, Bosingwa over to LB? I will try anything but what we just had.

by gold_e on Feb 11, 2012 3:51 PM GMT reply actions

And there is no creativity on the bench

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, we needed to buy ANY creative midfielder in January. Meireles deserves to be on the bench, so does Lampard for that matter. Romeu and Mikel are not the answers (too defensive). Chelsea messed up during the transfer window.

The Nigerian Perspective!

Have we not found a way around this? FFS, it happens every time! Teams pack the

center, force us wide where Bosingwa and Cole are (and we know how useless both of them can be). And then we get these crosses.

This is just mind-boggling. What is wrong with this team.

by ChelseaDC on Feb 11, 2012 4:29 PM GMT reply actions

Fuck this

I’m willingly turning off a Chelsea game for the first time in 3 years. I have better less painful things to do than watch this shit

by FootieFromAfar on Feb 11, 2012 4:30 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

Just unreal.

We look half-asleep when we play mid-table teams.

by Cablinasian on Feb 11, 2012 4:31 PM GMT reply actions

Horrible defending

Awful from the back four and Cech should have done better. Everton is a team that can’t score and our defense makes them look like Barca.

by Toronto78 on Feb 11, 2012 4:31 PM GMT reply actions

This has actually become funny

I don’t really feel sad. It felt like this was inevitable. We suck. There should be no reason to bring on Malouda. Oh well. I just hope we get Europa this season.

Totally overmatched

Our players are a disaster. But I do not understand what AVB is doing. What is the formation, why are the players not handling fundamentals, why are they not motivated in these matches against mid-table clubs. It’s just awful.

by ChelseaDC on Feb 11, 2012 4:32 PM GMT reply actions

I honestly hate watching us play.

Man U are far more entertaining, even when they’re off. It’s just cross, cross, cross, when Torres and everyone else currently playing are poor in the air!

by Chelsea-Steeler on Feb 11, 2012 4:32 PM GMT reply actions

So, uh

Win the ACoN, Didier. Then come back ready to slaughter, please.

Never thought I'd miss Terry so much

Not sure if he could fix this, but I have to believe he’d be having some words with this team about now.

by alynne4307 on Feb 11, 2012 4:34 PM GMT reply actions

We do

wish it wasnt in these sorts of circumstances… if AVB seems to feel he isn’t good enough. Hope he proves that wrong, though.

by alynne4307 on Feb 11, 2012 4:35 PM GMT up reply actions

This might be it for AVB

RA must be pissed watching this. He expected an exciting, attacking football team and maybe a rebuilding one. Instead, we just have an old team with no motivation. Dispirited and hopeless.

by MrkS on Feb 11, 2012 4:49 PM GMT up reply actions

Which based on their performance, is what we’d need. I think players and management are at fault. Don’t see how that isn’t a reasonable thought.

Torres, Brani etc showing far more frustration than normal. All is not well at the club.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 11, 2012 4:47 PM GMT up reply actions

Drogba can still score goals

even if we play shit, look at last season.

by The Bison on Feb 11, 2012 4:48 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree.

Our only chance of scoring is Drogba devouring defenders by himself (which I love). But I’m not sure how many matches he can win for us like this? 1/5? Either way, watching Chelsea play at the moment is horrible, and it isn’t just Torres’ fault.

by Chelsea-Steeler on Feb 11, 2012 4:55 PM GMT up reply actions

To be honest.

I’m wondering if it’s AVB. This is the first time I find myself actually thinking this too (normally an AVB apologist :P)

by Chelsea-Steeler on Feb 11, 2012 5:00 PM GMT up reply actions

What did he do? Doesnt matter what formation the manager puts out there, if

the team isnt gonna perform.

How do you think Spurs get away with a tactically clueless manager? Their team actually performs.

by Valens on Feb 11, 2012 5:01 PM GMT up reply actions

How can you motivate players that don't think they're going to even be there in a year

I certainly don’t dispute some of these formations and things that AVB has done have been ridiculous (why always a 4-3-3, buddy?), but this team is just ass right now.

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 5:04 PM GMT up reply actions

The team looked better with Ancelotti.

We just look defensively weaker now. And we have a very similar playing list. That’s why I am doubting AVB. I agree with you, he doesn’t seem to motivate the players either! I think we just look tactically weaker now (AVB)!

Henry, Pizarro, Scholes, Keane

Our rivals strengthened with experience. We remained stagnant. U might argue that they were all useless but they are contributing to their squad.

The Nigerian Perspective!

by Iced O on Feb 11, 2012 4:53 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

Our experience is currently in Portugal and Africa

While Lampard is just swallowed up by the negative energy surrounding this squad.

I think people are underestimating the shot in the arm this team will get when Kalou and Drogba return from ACoN – especially if they win it.

Please win it, Didier.

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 4:54 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm feeling AVB gets the sack tonight

With Capello,Hiddink,Benitez free and Mou willing to return
Not what I want though

by RamStamford on Feb 11, 2012 4:54 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

I only want Mourinho out of those.

Hiddink has allready said multiple times he would only take up advisory roles.

by The Bison on Feb 11, 2012 4:55 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah!

I want some kind of defensive ‘wall’ back :P Or just some kind of defence. I don’t think I even trust AVB to buy the right players in the summer. He might just want a ‘bargain’, like Willian!

by Chelsea-Steeler on Feb 11, 2012 4:58 PM GMT up reply actions

Benitez

wouldn’t be appropriate for Chelsea. I could see him at Spurs, though, should Arry go. Recently interviewed saying that he wants to come back to the PL. I know he fancies Liverpool again, but don’t see that happening right away.

by alynne4307 on Feb 11, 2012 4:58 PM GMT up reply actions

3 points out of last 12?

sometime I am thinking.. what would Roman do? AVB is got to show at least a promise of a project for next year. What I saw this year so far doesnt show much promise imo. What is our “vision”, “plan”, “project”. I am lost…

by MrkS on Feb 11, 2012 5:03 PM GMT up reply actions

i hope AVB stays

the younger generation of Chelsea players is good and will be perfect for his system. Mata, Luiz, Ramires, Sturridge, Lukaku …

by dojothecat on Feb 11, 2012 5:03 PM GMT reply actions

The only reason I want him to stay is because I hate constantly changing managers!

Apart from that I’m not too worried if he gets sacked. He doesn’t seem to be able to motivate the team at all, the spirit of previous years is gone, it doesn’t seem as if he has the team believing in themselves. Tactically he doesn’t convince me at all. His man management seems very poor. The defence is worse than at any point since Abramovic arrived and the attractive football that he was supposed to bring to the club is nowhere to be seen. If anything Chelsea are less effective going forward and less entertaining than in the Mourinho days!

by conorjmartin on Feb 11, 2012 5:12 PM GMT up reply actions

I never understood the 'entertaining football' serenade

Football is entertaining if you win games. It’s not if you don’t.

That seems all too simple to me.

by cwel87 on Feb 11, 2012 5:14 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree, I was always entertained in the Mourinho days!

But the general consensus was always that Mourinho’s Chelsea were boring and methodical. The thing I miss most about those days is the way that when an opposing player got the ball within 2 seconds there would be 3-4 Chelsea players snapping at him, every manager since seems to prefer the policy of dropping off and letting the opposition have time on the ball!

by conorjmartin on Feb 11, 2012 5:19 PM GMT up reply actions

But then it's difficult

or even impossible to make a match “entertaining” for oppo supporters. I for instance can never find a Pool match entertaining whatever sexy style they might play and how much they might score. Except you’re Barca, then you’re entitled to the beautiful game™ regardless how much you whine in front of the referee or keep rolling on the pitch faking injuries

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 11, 2012 5:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Mourinho?

just look into last year… how is this better then with Carlo? I hate hhanging managers too and AVB is a good guy, young, inteligent, smart, etc and i was bought into thinking this is what was needed. Now i am not sure anymore. I would like to see some promise THIS season.

by MrkS on Feb 11, 2012 5:19 PM GMT up reply actions

* changing

I am not advocating violence :-)

by MrkS on Feb 11, 2012 5:20 PM GMT up reply actions

True-I was really pissed off last season when Carlo got sacked!

The double winning season should have been enough to earn him the chance to rebuild the team!Abramovic made the mistake of blaming the manager when the players clearly weren’t good enough any more-the squad was too old and lacked any depth at all and there was also a mid-season injury crisis which is where everything went wrong last season, apart from that period we were as good as anyone!
