Should Chelsea go after Sneijder?
Sorry this is the first time I've created a fanpost so if the formatting sucks, I apologize.
I was wondering if there was a way where Chelsea could actually afford Sneijder and his wages. Inter must hate paying his wages and getting nothing out of him. It's clear that Raneri doesn't need Sneijder and maybe doesn't even want him. Sneijder has played 7 Serie A games this season and with Inter now in 5th it seems that Raneri is going to be at Inter for a couple of seasons (but you never know with football these days). I'm sure Raneri would rather use Sneijder's wages on a couple of different players especially with a rapidly aging squad. So...
Say Chelsea takes Sneijder and Inter takes Malouda. Clearly Sneijder is the better player but Inter get to dump his salary and even get a good squad player in return. Now this nothing compared to 40M euros they are said to hav wanted from City this summer but they are losing the upper hand (and money) every day Sneijder sits on their bench. Realistically Chelsea will need to kick in some transfer fee but for right now let's set that aside.
Sneijder makes ~£190k per week (£9.88M per year) and Malouda makes £3M a year in wages or ~£58k per week. The £132k difference is about £7M per year which is a BIG difference but not awful if we pay nothing on a transfer fee.
If we were to get Sneijder I'm assuming we will have to keep him for the rest of his contract*. According to Wiki, Sneijder signed a 5 year contract taking him to 2015. He signed the current deal October 2010 but it says the deal goes until 2015 so I assume it isn't a 4.5 year long deal ending in the middle of a season but instead they tore up the 2010-2011 deal and started with 2010-11 being year 1 of the new five year deal, 11-12 as year 2, 12-13 as year 3, 13-14 as year 4 and 14-15 as year 5. It's currently year 2 so if we get him this summer we'd be on the hook for three seasons. Malouda only has one more year on his deal so we'd be paying all of Sneijder's contract for two seasons and the Sneijder minus Malouda contract for one. That means Sneijder would still cost us about £26M for three years even on a free transfer. Just for comparison though, Mata cost us £23.5M for only the transfer fee. I assume he makes about the same if not more than Malouda so if I guess that Mata makes £3.5M per season meaning that over 5 years Mata will cost Chelsea £41M over his 5 seasons. Sneijder though is only would have three years left so 3/5 of £41 is £24.6M or just £1.4M less than Sneijder on a free deal. That doesn't seem horrible. However, as I said above getting Snijder for just Malouda seems unlikely especially a)since they asked for 40M euros this summer and b) we'd be dumping Malouda's contract on Inter to help make Sneijder cheaper, not trading them a good player instead of a transfer fee. If say inter offered us the above deal but with a £20M transfer fee attacked Sneijder would cost us £46M over three seasons. Now, Chelsea has a handful of players on the final year(s) of their contracts so maybe we take on Sneijder as a last chance to win with this squad and talk Drogba into coming back for a final year and such. I guess the question comes down to 1) how low can we get Inter's transfer fee down too (anything near £15m which is about what Inter paid Real Madrid for I'd say yes), 2) are Drogba, Torres, Lampard, Cole, Cech, Terry, and Essien still good enough that adding someone of Sneijder's quality will actually make a difference (would adding Sneijder actually give us a chance in England/UEFA) and 3) would signing Sneijder help us keep Drogba? If we're going to lose him to China or somewhere else than we'd need to sign a striker meaning unless we sign someone cheap (which I want but seems un-Chelsea like) than we'd have already blown the budget and that's before adding Sneijder and his ridiculous weekly wages. Falcao, Soldado, Villa, Cavani, Tevez, Gameiro, Rossi, and Hulk will all cost a fortune meaning the hopes of getting Sneijder are zero.
*Which seems likely since only about 6 teams can afford in the first place, Madrid and Barca don't need him (already have backups in Kaka and Cesc/Thiago/Villa), I don't see Senijder in Malaga or playing in Ligue 1 for PSG, leaving us, Man City and maybe a Russian team or a middle eastern team but I just don't see Sneijder not in England, Italy or Spain. City could use Sneijder but I don't see us selling him within the EPL so that'd rule them out. Meaning if we bought Sneijder he's here until the contract ends unless he renegotiates.

There's not an option on your poll that works for me...
He’s reportedly after £250k/week, which means that if we were to give him a (now relatively standard) 5 year contract he’d cost us somewhere in the region of £65m before any transfer fee. Even if we got him on a ‘free’ he’d be a big setback in our attempts to comply with FFP and is not a player we should be considering under any circumstances.
I wouldn’t agree to a new deal. He could play or not but it’d be take it or leave it. Look, Inter can’t afford him as is. I don’t think he really wants a new deal he just wants out of Milan.
Only two teams could afford the fees he wants and neither want him. He’s going to get a major dose of reality in a couple of years.
First and foremost I want to say that I love Sneijder.
I think he’s one of the best in the world, but there’s no way we get him on a free transfer for Malouda, that’s just not going to happen. I would love to see him here, just not for the wages he’s asking for. Maybe if it was two years ago and we would be getting a solid 4 to 5 years of world class football out of him, but that’s just not what we would get now. I would rather see Chelsea putting 30+ million after Hazard of Gotze.
Free or "free"
My whole point is that a free transfer isn’t even free since his wages are ridiculous. On a free transfer he still is more expansive than Mata who is something like the 12th most expensive EPL transfer of all time.
I didn’t mean to make this a Sneijder vs. Hazard/Gotze argument. I don’t think Gotze is leaving Dortmund in the next two years and if Neymar and Lucas stay in Brazil then Hazard will be the only elite young talent this off-season. Theoretically we are the only elite team in England or Spain that would guarantee Hazard the money and playing time he wants and deserves but who knows if we get him. This is more a what if hypothetical assuming we miss on Hazard, Lucas and Neymar stay in Brazil and Gotze says he’s at Dortmund until 2014. Then what?
I know you weren't saying it was an either or involving Hazard/Gotze
I was just saying that the lowest he is leaving for this off season is mid to high 20’s, and for that price I would rather have the team cough up another 7 to 10 million and buy an elite young player. His wages wouldn’t bother me if he was 24, but at this stage it’s a deal breaker.
Too old (turns 28 in the summer) and way too injury prone
And besides his wage demands are insane. He also only really shines in the AM position. I would rather see us go for a player like Modric when it comes to midfield creativity. Modric is extremely versatile and can play in multiple positions.
I hope we buy Hazard, Lucas Moura and Modric this summer.

________Cech________

_____Essien_Modric____
__Moura_Mata_Hazard__
_______Sturridge______
We also need a rightback: Bosingwa is terrible, Ferreira is ancient.
if we have that kind of firepower up top we dont need modric
Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you.
As a matter of fact don't let nothin' hold you back.
If the Scatman can do it brother so can you.
Yo I'm the Scatman.
i prefer ramires with essien or romeu

Your Nuts
Modric + Lucas + Hazard is £120M. No way.
We might sign one not names Modric.
BTW, Sneijder since going to Real has played in 158 matches in five years (if you count this year as complete) which accounts for about 31.6 matches per season which isn’t bad. Just for comparison, Essien has played 131 matches in the same time which means Sneijder is some what injury prone but not nearly as bad as Essien.
Remember that piece Stephen did about signing great young players with high resale value?
Wesley isn’t the type.
Hypothetical
I personally voted and I believe implied I’d only take him if he cost around £10-15M. I do think he’s too expensive but honestly I don’t give a damn about resale. Ideally we become the #1 team and don’t ever re-sell anyone to another team unless he doesn’t make the cut.
Nah.
He’ll retire before Piazon and co. are starters.
