So, with all the recent discussion about the Club World Cup not being a trophy worthy of Chelsea's interest/we shouldn't go all out/whatever, I've been thinking... should trophies be held in higher esteem?
Now, obviously, the two most important trophies for any supporter would be the Premier League and the Champions League - if you can win one of the two, then it's definitely been a successful season (see Chelsea last season - despite a pretty shocking season all round, it was deemed successful because we won the CL. Similarly, City, despite bombing out of CL and Europa in stunning fashion, won the league and were thus successful). My question is, tho, are these two trophies the only ones which are important, so to speak? Should a club be looking forward to a new season, looking to win all the trophies they are in play for, or just worry about the two major ones?
So here's the deal so far this season for us; We lost the Community Shield and the Super Cup, and failed to win two fairly easy trophies to kick off our season positively. Later, we dropped out of the Champions League, and are now in Europa. We haven't been too flashy in the league, despite a spectacular start, (currently sitting 10 points behind United), but are clear favourites for the League Cup, and just kicking off what should be a successful Club World Cup campaign.
So, so far, we've lost one of the two big trophies at play, and really lost our grip on the other. I think it'd be unwise to expect Chelsea to win the EPL (fingers crossed!), so we're left with 4 'minor' trophies - Club World Cup, Capital One Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.
The Club World Cup is not a prestigious trophy. While we would be joining an elite gang of Barcelona, Inter, AC Milan and Manchester United by winning it, it's not much to boast about. Similarly with the League Cup, Liverpool were mocked last season for celebrating their victory, however we are in prime position to win it.
These two are the easiest trophies for us to win. We need two victories (against Monterrey and Corinthians) to win it, who are by no means walkovers, but shouldn't pose too much of a threat. Similarly in the League Cup, we are one of only 3 Premier League sides remaining in the competition (alongside Swansea and Aston Villa), we don't face a particularly tough road ahead.
The FA Cup is a trophy we're all familiar with - we are yet to enter the competition, and we would have to win 6 matches to earn the trophy. In the Europa League, we enter with 32 clubs remaining - we will have to win 9 matches to lift the trophy.
So, after a longer than expected sum up... I'll ask you WAGNHers, will you consider 2012/13 to be a successful season, if we walk away at the end of it with the Club World Cup, Capital One Cup, FA Cup and Europa League? Or is it, to you, all about the EPL and Champions League?
