With the future of Chelsea in doubt, and Captain John Terry turning 32 at the end of the year, Chelsea will need to start planning his replacement. Vice-captain Frank Lampard and third-captain Petr Cech are out of the running, being 34 and 30 respectively. Also too old is Ivanovic, Cole and Torres, while Oscar, Hazard, and Moses are still too young for consideration. Here are the top five options as I see them.
5. David Luiz: Chelsea’s club clown. The centre back receives regular criticism for his defensive errors, but chips in with the occasional goal. Unlikely to receive JT’s armband any time soon.
4. Ramires: The Brazilian arrived in London in 2010. He proved to be a key player in reaching the Champions League final, but is he enough of a key player to make captain?
3. John Obi Mikel: frequently referred to as Chelsea’s unsung hero. Maybe referred to so much it is no longer unsung. Brilliant in the DM position, been at the club since 2006. A possibility to receive the armband.
2. Gary Cahill: paired up expertly with Terry in defence. The England international has also only been at the club since last season, but definitely captain material. Soon to be 27, will he make captain before JT, Lamps and Cech depart?
1. Juan Mata: The diminutive Spaniard definitely bosses the attack, and if he isn’t there yet he will soon become a Chelsea legend. Although he only arrived last season, Mata has been an influential leader by changing momentum in matches by scoring goals and creating attacking options. At 24, perhaps Mata’s age gives him the advantage over Cahill.
