On Gary Cahill and David Luiz

Before starting this fan-post, i would like to say that this post's purpose is not to compare the two CB's and to find out which one is better. Both are very good in their own way having different skills. The real purpose of this post is to give my own opinion about our defenders and to find out what others in the community think about them.

So far this season we have seen different pairings of our CB's with Terry and Luiz being the most common one and Cahill playing as sort of a back up to both. I think it is safe to say that Terry would still be a first choice CB not only because 'perhaps' he is still the best CB we have, but because he brings a whole lot more in leadership and discipline whenever he plays. I cant fail but notice that whenever Luiz is playing alongside Terry, he becomes less 'crazy' and commits less mistake, now i could be wrong but that's how i see it.

So according to me Terry is and should be the first choice CB at least for this season. Now that leaves a single place for one out of Cahill and Luiz. As i said before this post is not to compare their abilities and to find out who is better but just to see who brings what to the table and how do they fit in.

31st January 2011, the day when Chelsea bought the most expensive player in British history, but its also the day when Chelsea acquired the services of a Brazilian defender with beautiful hair. Its safe to say that not many people actually knew a lot about Luiz or actually had seen him play. I had never seen him play so i was really eager to find out what he was made of. And boy where we delighted to see what he was really made of. His first league start, full debut against fulham and we see this CB doing a 'Bicycle kick cross' into the box which was headed just over. Everyone related to Chelsea were excited and instantly started to like him. Even though he gave away a last minute penalty in that match which Cech saved, he was named the man of the match and we had found a new 'fan favorite'. There is not doubt that Luiz has amazing set of skills for a CB which is very rare and nobody doubts his ability. He could be one of the most skillful center back in the world right now and anybody who has seen him play cannot deny that. But the issue with Luiz is, well it could be any of these, such as, loss of concentration, sudden moment of insanity, brain-fart etc etc. He is almost guaranteed to have one moment like these in each game which on some days prove to be more costly than rest. I absolutely love David Luiz and i seriously think that he could be one of the top defenders ever to play football in the coming years, but right now we just cannot afford mistakes like these which could prove costly down the line, and i am pretty sure that one day he will sort out these issues and be the player that everyone expects him to be, but till then why not have a look below.

16th January 2012 another defender bought in the January window, twice in 2 years. But all of us already knew what Gary Cahill was made of as we had seem him play regularly in the EPL for many years, and its safe to say that not many of us were overly excited with this signing. Fast forward few months, and we had a defender from whom not much was expected giving some absolute solid performances and that too in big matches such as Champions league semi final and Final. Fast forward a few more months to the present day, and we have a defender who as far as i recall hasn't done anything wrong whenever he has played for us(only minor mistake i recall is the Pogrebnyak goal for reading against us this season) and has so far scored 7 goals in 25+4 appearances for us, more than any other CB from Chelsea during the same time period even after making less appearances than the other CB's (only Ivanovic has more goals than him during the same period but all of his goals have come from RB position). Cahill does not have extraordinary skill's like Luiz but he is strong, tall, great in the air, disciplined, and also a great finisher.

Hence, my take on this is that Luiz is a great defender with immense skill and ability, but Chelsea cannot afford the risk of potential mistakes which he carries with him. On the other hand, Cahill hasn't put a foot wrong in his short career for Chelsea so far in his limited opportunities and therefore, he should be given a long run alongside Terry form and injury permitting.

What do you guys think?
