Ramires comes of age against Arsenal

Stay connected for news and updates

The win versus Arsenal was a massive three points. We defended and attacked with intent, but one person in particular was a standout. Ramires has been used as a box to box midfielder, a right winger, a right back, and on Saturday took up a relatively new role as a deep lying midfielder. He didn't stand out, but his statistics say otherwise (whoscored.com).

Defending:

Tackling:

  1. Cole (5)
  2. Ramires (5)
  3. Mikel (3)

Interceptions:

  1. Ramires (2)
  2. Mata (2)
  3. Hazard (2)

Shots blocked:

  1. Ramires (1)
  2. Cole (1)
  3. Terry (1)

That may not look all too impressive, but when you look at his attacking contributions, it shows his all round performance.

Attacking:

Turnovers:

  1. Torres (3)
  2. Cole (3)
  3. Ramires (2)

Passes:

  1. Hazard (51)
  2. Mata (51)
  3. Ramires (49)

Pass accuracy (from starting XI)

  1. Terry (93%)
  2. Mata (92%)
  3. Ramires (92%)

Key passes:

  1. Torres (2)
  2. Mata (1)
  3. Ramires (1)

Long balls:

  1. Luiz (8/13)
  2. Cech (7/18)
  3. Ramires (4/5)

I like to think this shows off Ramires's all round quality and ability to play as a deep lying midfielder. His passing has been questioned, but to have such good statistics for such a key game is a really pleasing sign for all involved. I haven't always been his biggest fan, I was confused to where he would play in the 4-2-3-1, but hopefully he can work on his weaknesses (committing fouls, defensive awareness).
