If reports are correct that Roman is only offering one year extensions to 30+ year old players, I cannot agree more. Although I understand the importance of experience, giving older players 2-3 year contracts could potentially scupper a youngsters chance of making the team, and we have quite a few young ones. As i'm sure everyone is aware, Chelsea has been buying a lot of young starlets, with the hope that most of them come good and we can counter act FFP. After the jump, I will look at some of the players that can be in the squad in the next few years, and who will be out.
Goalkeepers:
Name: Thibaut Courtois - 20 - Atletico Madrid
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: Petr Cech. I see both keepers Interchanging in cup games and based on form. May get a year on loan at an english club before making the step up.
Name: Jamal Blackman - 18 - Chelsea
Breakthrough expected in: 2015
Replacing: Petr Cech as second choice keeper by then. Cech will be 33 by then. Although not old for a keeper, Blackman with a few successful loans will be able to fill the spot.
Defenders:
Name: Tomas Kalas - 19 - Vitesse
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: Unsure. Depending on how much faith is put in him. Plays right back, centre back, so could replace Ivanovic in time. Also could keep JT on his heels. Really excited by this guy.
Name: Patrick Van Aanholt - 22 - Vitesse
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: He and Bertrand can fill the void when Ashley Cole eventually deteriorates. Already has first team experience.
Name: Jeffrey Bruma - 20 - Hamburg
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: John Terry, once his legs give in. First team experience, gaining valuable playing time in Germany, already has 4 Dutch caps.
Name: Todd Kane - 19 - Chelsea
Breakthrough expected in: 2015
Replacing: Paulo Ferreria. Loan is needed for this guy, but is very promising. Plays at under 21 level for England.
Name: Nathaniel Chalobah - 17 - Watford
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: Can play defense or midfield, so take your pick. Future Chelsea captain.
Notable mentions - Sam Hutchinson, Kenneth Omuero, Nathan Ake
Midfielders:
Name: Josh McEachran - 19 - Middlesborough
Breakthrough expected in: 2013 - 2014
Replacing: Frank Lampard. All the skills, just needs the game time, which he is getting in the championship.
Name: Kevin De Bruyne - 21 - Werder Bremen
Breakthrough expected in: 2013
Replacing: Unsure. He would be a candidate to play in the double pivot or in the front three. Ambidextrous. Good passing range, vision and turn of speed. Should become a crucial player if he keeps his form up in Germany.
Name: Ulises Davila
Breakthrough expected in: Unsure
Replacing: Depends on whether he can adapt to english football. A successful loan to the Championship could pave the way to some first team minutes. Promising, but has a lot of talent to get past.
Name: Lucas Piazon
Breakthrough expected in: 2014
Replacing: Florent Malouda, Yossi Benayoun. Really rate this guy. Seen his performance versus Wolves, and stood out for me. Can also play as a Striker if required.
Notable Mentions - Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Amin Affane, Gael Kakuta, Thorgan Hazard
Attackers:
Name: Romelu Lukaku - 19 - West Brom
Breakthrough expected in: 2013
Replacing: Nobody. I see him interchanging with Torres and Sturridge, much like Welbeck does with Rooney and Van Persie.
Name: Islam Feruz - 17 - Chelsea
Breakthrough expected in: 2016
Replacing: Torres. By then, Torres will be 31, and with some first team experience on loan, Feruz can live up to his potential hopefully.
Name: Patrick Bamford - 19 - Chelsea
Breakthrough expected in: 2015
Replacing: Adding depth to the line up. Signed in January, Bamford is a 'pocaher'.
Notable mention - Jhon Pirez, Milan Lalkovic
The future looks good!
