Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Blues May Not Be Done After Gary Cahill, Says AVB

Photo

Some interesting stuff from Andre Villas-Boas today regarding the January window and what we may or may not be doing. Chelsea have been murmuring about a quiet transfer period for a little while now, but now the boss is talking about expanding beyond the Gary Cahill transfer (which he's pretty much confirmed is happening) to other targets:

Apart from the central defender we might get one more player in, but we're not sure yet. It's always difficult (in January). First of all, the top talent is normally cup-tied in the Champions League, or in the different domestic competitions.

It's difficult for the selling club to make players available. So it's normal to struggle in the transfer market. Normally it's a market where you overpay a lot and that's not what we want to do now. I think that's why we've set out not to do a lot in the transfer window.

Star-divide

Now it's tempting to read that as a list of players we can go after (i.e. not Champions League or FA Cup-tied), but in reality Villas-Boas is simply talking about the general difficulties of January rather than filtering out targets based on whether or not they're cup-tied. He knows just as much as we do that although a deep CL run would be super, the league is what matters to Chelsea right now. The fact that, say, Eden Hazard would be unavailable in Europe having featured for Lille is more or less irrelevant.

What's good to hear is the talk about value. It doesn't take a particularly long memory to recall Chelsea being burned badly in January, and it's not like that doesn't happen to other clubs either. Villas-Boas is completely right to focus on summer window, but that doesn't mean the Blues shouldn't have their eyes open for potential bargains, cup-tied or no.

The manager also talked a little bit about loans:

We don't have a lot of players that we are going to send out on loan. Those conversations were made at the beginning of the season and eventually we went on from that. There were conversations regarding one or two players that went the other way.

If I had to guess, there'll be three - Josh McEachran, Gael Kakuta and Patrick van Aanholt. McEachran's been pretty clear that he's been earmarked for a loan spell, and there's no place for van Aanholt with Ryan Bertrand installed as Ashley Cole's primary backup who never ever gets used. Kakuta could be used as an auxiliary wide forward should Salomon Kalou or Florent Malouda leave, but he's yet to demonstrate he can effectively play at the senior level, and I'd be very wary of granting him a place on the squad. A loan deal makes sense there as well.

i hope he's being modest

would love to see another 3 or so players come in other than cahill, An RB (Azpilcueta) a right footed wing (krasic) and a creative player (Hazard/Goetze/hamsik etc)

It’ll be Cahill and either Azpilicueta or a forward

by astrotrain on Jan 9, 2012 5:01 PM GMT reply actions

He's said elsewhere that we're looking for Cahill + a forward

Presumably as replacements for Alex and Anelka. Are we solidly linked to any forwards yet? Lucas/Krasnic had agents talking about bids but those both sounded that it’d be just as likely that they are mythical.

Good lord Azpillicueta would be welcome though

by David Drabble on Jan 9, 2012 5:33 PM GMT up reply actions

I'd like a versatile left winger

That way we can sell malouda without having to worry

by Famouscfc on Jan 9, 2012 6:15 PM GMT up reply actions

All in due time

If Malouda’s happy to stay until the summer, we’ll get much better value when we’re looking for replacements.

by deg0ey on Jan 9, 2012 10:06 PM GMT up reply actions

I just can't see it being Azpilicueta

Marseille have absolutely no reason to sell at this point, I just can’t see it happening before June.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 9, 2012 5:28 PM GMT up reply actions

I agree..I would say we desperately need a right back in this window…but he is not as likely to come because he is too valuable to them as well.

by astrotrain on Jan 9, 2012 5:34 PM GMT up reply actions

Him and Ferreira couldn’t combine to make a good defender, he is fine going forward though.

Actually

If, I am not mistaken, they sort of did in one game. Whether that can be replicated is the question that no one wants to try to answer :)

I think it's funny....

……that even during the Manchester FA Cup game, Chelsea kits were being pushed on Fox Soccer Channel by a general soccer apparel merchandiser (soccerworld.com???). They don’t have personalized advertising on cable yet, do they?

by ososdeoro on Jan 9, 2012 9:31 PM GMT up reply actions

You can already

Just customize an official Chelsea one. :P
I’m “THIS” close to doing it with Hamsik. Because I WANT TO BELIEVE!!!

If you're going to get a Chelsea jersey of a player unlikely to...

…play for us anytime soon, you might as well get one that’s humorous. Who would be funnier than Robinho, who famously had his shirt offered in the online shop before City hijacked our deal?

Stupid question...

does PvA featuring in the reserves match today exclude him from being able to go out on loan for the remainder of the season? Or do the reserves not count in the rules about not playing for more than 2 teams in a given season?

I just don’t know as much about this stuff as y’all :)

by alynne4307 on Jan 9, 2012 9:17 PM GMT reply actions

I don't think so

Reserve teams aren’t considered “official”, so to speak, and their matches, even though they’re in a league, are almost a friendly.

No

The reserves aren’t considered official matches as far as that rule is concerned

If they get Mark Hughes in as manager

I could believe that they’d make a play for him.

Does Alex’s desire to leave stem from lack of playing time or just wanting to be somewhere else? If it’s the former then QPR could be a perfect fit.

by deg0ey on Jan 9, 2012 10:08 PM GMT up reply actions

Hmm,

I know that in the beginning of the year he had stated that he wanted a longer term contract to close out his career, and didnt have much interest in further loan deals, and neither did the club. It would seem that he just wants a place to stay put and play, and to get an assured longterm contract, which he may not have been getting here. I could see playing time also being important. I think this came about because someone showed interest in loaning him this last summer, but it didn’t fit the bill. Not sure if location is important to him.

by alynne4307 on Jan 9, 2012 10:35 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm guessing it's a bit of both

The “exile” no doubt helped with the latter, while the former is a goal for most professionals…

by DPeezy on Jan 10, 2012 6:46 AM GMT up reply actions

In which case, I could imagine Hughes making a play for him...

Although he could always go for Chris Samba (wasn’t it Hughes that took him to Blackburn in the first place?)

No, please!

He has to go to my Fluminense!

The Daily Fail isn't a reliable source, but...

…I both hope it’s correct, and wouldn’t be surprised. I’m not sure where else he’d go, though, since I think he wants to come here above anywhere else.

I think it's common knowledge we'll get him in the summer. You raised my hopes that maybe

it’ll happen this window. Lord knows we could use a versatile forward (he can play anywhere across the front line, besides striker).

by Valens on Jan 10, 2012 2:40 AM GMT up reply actions

Isn't £8million a tad too much?

That’s exactly how much we paid for Courtois. Does the club think he can make develop as magnificently as him?

(It doesn’t make a difference if this story is false or not, fact is that we were heavily interested in him and he won’t come for anything less than that)

by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 10, 2012 3:01 AM GMT up reply actions

I think £8m is fair for De Bruyne.

I’m not sure he’s going to be a super-star or anything, but he’ll probably be a great asset for the team. As for Courtois, remember, goalkeepers are consistently under-valued unless they’re top, top class. [Remember, we bought Cech for £7m. Courtois has impressed at Atletico this season, and is probably capable of being a back-up plan if Cech goes down with a long-term injury. Seriously, he’s good, and will probably be our first-choice in the next few years. I think we got him cheap, in all honesty.

yeah the daily mail is rather un reliable

but it did get my hopes up. i was hoping we signed him and keep him in Genk for the rest of the season. do you guys think he’s ready to start for us next season?

by CardinaLnGold on Jan 10, 2012 3:14 AM GMT up reply actions

I'm fairly confident we'll get him eventually, so this might have some truth to it.

I can see us agreeing a deal for £8m now, joining in the summer, and being loaned out next year. I think he could be a decent young squad player now or next year, but a loan somewhere where he’ll get significant time will improve him greatly.

Di Maria

Marca are reporting that an unnamed club has bid 38 million for Angel Di Maria, apparently he is unhappy with his wages at Madrid.

by Yamish on Jan 10, 2012 1:02 PM GMT reply actions

Oh ok..I see..the first one I read was stating that it was a summer move, but the others say a bid has been made. I’ll take him. Very nice player.

ADM has been the second-best player at Madrid this year

However, this is a pretty standard negotiating ploy for Spanish-based players. Remember the years of Ramos rumours? ADM’s just trying to get a new contract.

Yes, I do remember. They had him going every which way.
