Due to Stephen and Graham's impeccable coverage of the January transfer window, I won't be doing my little rumors post during the month. However, I do want to get my thoughts in on what I think we should do during the window. Let's start at the back with Defense.
AVB courted Alvaro Pereira in the summer in order to add an option down the left wing which, in hindsight, wasn't such a bad idea. A return for Alvaro then would be reasonable if it wasn't for his cost. Paying upwards of 20 million for a rotational player is insane and Porto doesn't look one to negotiate. Our interest in Gary Cahill is well documented and it does look like he will at the club sooner rather than later. The future has been addressedwell by the impending signing of Nigerian Kenneth Omeruo, his signing adds to an already bright future class of center backs which include Thomas Kalas, Jeffrey Bruma and Nathaniel Chalobah. An Alex departure could bring some 3-5 million pounds into the club. The real unknown part of the back line is right back. It's very unclear whether AVB has any interest in investing. A move has been mentioned for Cesar Azpilicueta, which would be great, but one would have to wonder if Marsielle would really sell for the quoted 12 million pound price. Another option (who has grown into a real favorite of WAGNH) is Samuel Inkoom. The problems continue to mount at Dnipro and Inkoom and it seems his primed for an exit. If so, Chelsea should pounce because I could easily see him going for 10 million or less given current circumstances, tremendous value to say the least.
Now we move upfield to the midfielders. Defensive mid is pretty well-to-do right now with Romeu an Mikel. If Romeu leaves we could have some activity but that's not happening this window. The center midfield position does provide for some debate, with Essien coming back into the side a signing may clog up the midfield and force someone into Josh's basket role. Signing Hamsik or Moutinho would be great but who would be releagted into the rotations. It makes me wonder if we can contend in the backhalf of the season without that playmaker in the midfield.
The attacking three is where could really see some investments this window. Anelka's departure and Kalou and Malouda's uncertain futures certainly call for at least one new signing for the wings. De Bruyne would help but he would certainly prove a project to try and adapt to the premier league. A move for Hazard would be ideal but at what cost? The smart money move hear would be a move for Milos Krasic but I can't see him fitting into our system.
Some interesting quandaries being presented to us by this transfer window. Could we see a late target emerge like Meireles? Very possible. Will have to wait and see.
