Chelsea Vs. Portsmouth, 2011 FA Cup: Blues Win 4-0
It's pretty rare that you see an unconvincing performance coinciding with a 4-0 win, but Chelsea managed it today against Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, the game wasn't televised, so the majority of us were forced to rely on the radio, which isn't exactly the recipe for an in-depth match report. We'll give it our best shot anyway.
Anyone expecting Andre Villas-Boas to rest some of his senior players to deploy the likes of Josh McEachran and Ryan Bertrand was in for a surprise, as Chelsea fielded a more or less full-strength team against Pompey. It was a move that looks like it was designed to get the Blues on the board early and often, and it backfired quite spectacularly when the two teams promptly sat around and did virtually nothing for the entire first half. An early chance by Dave Kitson was Portsmouth's only attack of note, and all Chelsea did was force Stephen Henderson into a flying save thanks to a Fernando Torres header.
It was frustrating stuff (all the more so because we couldn't actually see it), so most of us were screaming for substitutions at halftime. We didn't get any, but we did get a goal instead which was pretty neat. Florent Malouda, who'd been worse than anonymous for the bulk of the match, suddenly burst into life and began pinging crosses into Henderson's box. The first was cleared, but minutes later Malouda went low and found the left foot of Juan Mata, who volleyed home for his sixth goal of the season.
Bizarre, Chelsea then opted to play more defensively and were nearly forced to pay when David Luiz got about a billion times too cute as the last man and was robbed of the ball while performing a set of stepovers, forcing Petr Cech into two crucial saves and John Terry into a painful, heroic goalline clearance that saw the captain hurt himself. That's the David Luiz moment we're going to remember from the match, and it really ruined his otherwise flawless day. He's really got to stop pulling that sort of nonsense.
After that scare, things returned to the status quo until Villas-Boas removed Malouda and sent on Oriol Romeu in his place. That freed up Ramires to attack, and suddenly the Blues were running riot, with the Brazilian midfielder notching two goals within minutes (both assists coming from Torres, incidentally). A goal from Frank Lampard in injury time sealed the deal, but the scoreline really does flatter the Blues.
it might seem churlish to complain about a 4-0 win, but it wasn't a particularly good performance from Chelsea until the last few minutes, and we'll be hoping to do better against Sunderland in the league on Saturday. Still, we advanced to the fourth round, which is better than what holders City have managed, so hey, it was a pretty decent day.

I think it's called "THE MAGIC OF THE CUP!"
It’s pretty rare that you see an unconvincing performance coinciding with a 4-0 win
See?
I don’t think we “saw” anything. Not yet anyway. :P
But the scoreline seems about as flattering at the 5-1 for Liverpool v. Oldham.
Not much I can say. Really need to see the game. People who sounded like they had a
good game:
Torres
Luiz (cock-up aside)
JT
Ramires
Mata?
Yeah, Di Matteo...talking on CTV
John Terry is fine, btw.
Also not sure if any of our currently injured players will be able to be back for the weekend.
playmaking
torres seems to be racking up assists and not goals but all thesame,i’d prefer a solid perfomance to goals although a goal would be the icing on the cake…..

Query: How the hell is Rooney the top rated striker in FIFA 12?

how is he not?
He’s strong on the ball, has a bomb, can finish, head the ball, and has good distribution…he is just slow

Haha, JT..."a little bit swollen" but I'll be fine.
Talking about his knee, that is.

Insert Wayne Bridge Joke?

First thing I thought of when I saw ChelseaFC tweet it
I believe he did a chip pass in the Wolves game too, because I was trying to 1) figure out when he learned to and 2) figure out when he would finally use it on goal.
I'll take that

Also, Ramires has promised to give an interview in English before the end of the season.
Wonder how Sideshow’s English skills are coming along.

Did we still play 4-3-3?
Because we still don’t have the wingers for that system…seriously,I don’t get why 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 hasn’t been tried yet. This could have been a chance to open Josh’s basket though…or to unleash the LUKAKU. But there’s a week for the next game sooo…I think Torres is getting better and better with this run in the team, though.

Well, we have players like Malouda, Sturridge and Kalou who are pretty capable as inside forwards
Which works for either a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. A 4-4-1-1 requires two proper wingers (like United have in abundance) which we don’t have any of at all.
I'm a fan of the 4-2-3-1 formation myself.

I think that it's only minimally different from the system we currently use to be honest
It’s more about the personnel you have in there.
Play a 4-3-3 with Mikel, Romeu and Mata as the midfield three and it’ll look like a 4-2-1-3 (or 4-2-3-1 if that’s how you want to write it). Swap Romeu for Lampard and it’ll look more like a 4-1-2-3 just based on the areas each player prefers to operate in.
The players in AVBs system appear to have a pretty fluid formation where they can all go wherever they want to (within reason) so it seems a little redundant to talk of 4-3-3 vs 4-2-3-1 as far as I’m concerned.
Basically I wanted a tryout of a lone striker system
With Torres on the field…Mata can operate behind him,and if its 4-4-1-1 we can play Lampard/Raul or Raul/Ramires in the centre,Flo Mo and Kalou on the left/right. Sturridge on the right too,a modified 4-4-1-1. Or even Ramires on the right but sort of tucked in like he was under Carlo. Just a thought. But then that’ll morph into a 4-3-3 soon enough later, like you said.

4-3-3 with "proper" wingers? Who plays that kind of system?
The modern 4-3-3 is almost always with inside forwards. Or one of each as was the case today (Malouda more of a winger on the left, Mata an inside forward / advanced playmaker on the right side of the forward line).
Still think that sort of reduces Mata's effectiveness
If he’s on the right…though he’s pretty effective wherever he plays. A free role in the centre would be a treat to watch,if we can find a good system for that. Not many defensive issues during this one?

For all the talk of Torres as a false nine, the two assists today came from him heading down a cross in the box...
… and running a two-on-one counter-attack with Ramires. I haven’t seen the match, so hard to judge, but I’m guessing he’s not exactly playing like Messi.
Tbf, I said that based on the radio commentary about his passing. I havent seen it yet, so I
can’t be sure about it.
You’re right that his assists weren’t false nine-esque, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t playing deeper to link-up with the midfield and provide (aka being a false nine). Not all of his passes would’ve resulted in goals.
Random observation:
totally missed the news about Warnock. Granted, it did just happen not long ago.
Kinda wondered if it was coming. Less because of results, but more because of his reactions to results. This could have some bearing on our drawing (depending on who moves on in the rematch).
*I totally missed the news...
sigh, typos.
I heard...
on the play by plays and the radio, it seemed like Meireles, Torres, Luiz, Terry, and Ramires had a great game. Mata wasn’t so good in the beginning but they said he definitly stepped it up in the second half.
