Drogba to Miss Sunday's FA Cup Tie, Somewhere a Gentle-Giant Puppy Stirs

The Guardian reports tonight/this morning that despite AVB's best hopes, Didier Drogba is set to jet off before Sunday to join up with the Ivory Coast national team's training camp for the Africa Cup of Nations. Erstwhile sidekick Salomon Kalou is joining him in this adventure as well, leaving Chelsea less two probable starters for the FA Cup 3rd Round match v. Portsmouth.

Of course, Pompey sucks (especially away from Fratton Park), so we really should be winning this one regardless who gets put out there at the top...but now there's a good chance that AVB will call on Romelu Lukaku's number to lead the attack. Having already embarrassed ourselves in the League Cup and de facto eliminated ourselves from the Premiership title race, the club may be placing extra emphasis on this competition - a trophy is a trophy after all - so the Gentle Giant should have a good supporting cast around him and should get a very good opportunity to show those flashes of goalscoring form for the Reserves in a match that actually matters.

Here's a nice video (complete with a somewhat puzzling Turkish rap/rock soundtrack) to remind you of what he can do:

That St. Bernard puppy could be a big force down the middle when it grows up to adult size. It may score more goals than Drogba or Torres have of late. Even as a puppy it could power home a cross against this bad Portsmouth side. Lukaku better play, and score..against this rubbish club. Its a shame they let Harry Redknapp spend all their money and bankrupt the club, then run off to the Spuds..

Redknapp's bigger disgrace was

spoiling many players future.
Giovanni dos Santos,Nico Kranjcar to name a few.
dos Santos looked like the real deal when he joined Spurs,he still is good for Mexico, was good for Zaragoza(?) during his loan.
Its ’Arry’s cockiness that hes unwilling to either play him or sell him.
People accredit Bale’s surge to him where the credit belonged to Jol.
He’s a disgrace to management.
Hope he doesn’t get the England job.
He’ll ruin the future JMac JWill JRod partnership.

I don't blame that entirely on Redknapp

Why Tottenham doesn’t have a reserve league team is something I’ll never understand. When the EPPP take hold that academy is going to become completely irrelevant.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 5, 2012 3:55 PM GMT up reply actions

They have a youth squad

When the EPPP take effect they’ll likely be a level 3 academy which would probably be as low as any top level club. It will be a serious hindrance going forward, especially when two of the three level 1 academies in the country will be in London.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 5, 2012 5:19 PM GMT up reply actions

yep

It’ll take a while to become evident, but the youth setup will pay off in the long term.

How?

If Josh cannot get a kick and Bertrand can’t get to LB in front of Bos when Ash is poorly and Lukaku as a multi million pounder can’t get a kick just how good is an academy product gonna have to be to EVER play for us?

I truly pray we find a way of getting kids a chance(if Barca and Utd can)but I see ZERO hope right now. Only difference between us and Spurs is we’ve wasted more on ours so far.

Strange he doesn't play dos Santos...

He’s sort of a bigger thorn in the US side than Chicharito.. at least recently. That is, if I have the right dos Santos… there are two of them, no? All I know is that one or both of them spoiled our Gold Cup (well, along with our not being particularly great) and made us look silly in a friendly soon after (possibly due to some odd player selection on Klinsmann’s part).

Giovanni, and he has plenty of talent

He just chose the wrong club when he left Barca. Can’t blame him for wanting playing time, but it simply hasn’t worked out for him as well as anyone would’ve hoped.

His brother Jonathan is still there, but might leave in the summer if the club doesn’t think he’s good enough for promotion. He’s a central midfielder who has been playing right back recently – one to keep an eye on imo.

im keen to see more of lukaku

i was so stoked when we signed him, he has looked pretty poor for the first team, thats a given, but he is talented enough to turn it around at some point, maybe this weekend is when he really starts to play like his anderlecht self. He is still only 18 anyway, time is on his side

ramires

How long did it take ramires to get used to the epl, we judged him early and i feel so many people are doing the same with lukaku

+ 1

Even Drogba had a dire ffirst season at the club

The best season he had was recent (09-10) so it may take time for Big L to reach Drog’s heights

It's even worse when you consider his age

Lukaku is 4 years younger than Danny Sturridge, 2 younger than Romeu, and a few months younger than McEachran.

Worst of all

He’s a kid.

A lot of people never really judged Ramires too harshly

He looked like such a game changer those first couple matches that he got quite a bit of growing pains slack.

NOW I want to kick his ass for his inability to put sitters away, but I still love him.

I didn't, but I made sure to qualify the whole thing with a nice fat "should"

We should be winning this one easily. So that translates to about a 33% chance that we’ll slump to a stupid defeat.

A stupid defeat? Sounds like a job for...

It'd be nice to give CRISIS a break

It’s been working really hard not just at Chelsea but various other London and North-West clubs, too. It desperately needs a vacation.

by DPeezy on Jan 5, 2012 8:41 PM GMT up reply actions

See, I was thinking it was primed to work hard on Spurs again

at least at the end of the month. Then I thought it ought to make its return to working in the North-West, and then, and only then, has it really earned its time off.

You know what,

I think you’re right. CRISIS has yet to fully make it’s rounds. ;c)
