Crouching Mata, Hidden Dragon, and Chelsea FC's Top 10 Transfer Targets
It had gone unmentioned, but hopefully not unnoticed, that the summer signing of Juan Mata easily beat out the emergence of Daniel Sturridge in the polling for Chelsea's sweetest "moment"/event/trend of 2011. Much like the chances created by Chelsea, the vast majority of the votes (235 to 105 / 70% to 30%) belong to the Juan and only player better than Salomon Kalou.
Speaking of signings, a self-selected sampling of Pat Nevin readers (who were willing to email him a list) have voted/compiled a list of Top 10 transfer targets for Chelsea. This follows a similar exercise from last year, which correctly predicted/guessed 2 eventual transfers in David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku. Clearly, Nevin's readership is no more of an Oracle of Delphi than you or I (and Andy Carroll appeared at #6)...but it's transfer season (beginning of) and we actually have a few days between games for a change, so what else are we going to talk about?
Here then is the Top 10 list, as compiled by Nevin's emailers. The names involved look oddly similar to ones being thrown around here in the WAGNH comment section:
- Gary Cahill - Interestingly enough, Cahill was the #1 choice on this list last year, too. Maybe there is something about him that I'm missing, but Nevin's readers certainly think he's the holy grail of defensive reinforcements.
- Eden Hazard - Now here's a cause I can get behind. You should be familiar with this certain Belgian prodigy by now...but if not, here's Stephen's profile of Hazard to illuminate your mind and get you panting at the prospect of this talent ever turning out in a Blue shirt.
- Edinson Cavani - Dream big, I say...but rather have Hamsik. Also, while Nevin does not make this mistake, Cavani has nothing to do with the inventor of the lightbulb. It's Edinson, people of the world - TWO n's.
- Luka Modric - The name that will just not go away. Maybe we should just get it over with and buy him. I'm not convinced a regista is what we really need...but hey, Meireles can always go become a hair model instead to decrease the glut in midfield.
- Gonzalo Higuain - This story/rumor is gaining traction and I'd be very happy with it...for the right price. For what it's worth, Higuain is my all-time favorite FM players. If his real self can be as good as his virtual self, all the headaches of the past year would finally dissipate.
- Mario Gotze - I have a feeling he would be much higher if this list had been compiled based on WAGNH votes. Still, I can't see him moving outside of Germany - certainly not to England - and he seems destined to play out his prime at Bayern. Maaaaybe Real Madrid...
- Kaka - The only other holdover from last year's list...but WHYYYYYY??? One Deco was enough.
- Hulk - Love the name. Love the player. Loves AVB. AVB loves him. We would all love him. Probably would not love the price tag.
- Neymar - No matter how much I try, all I can see is another Robinho situation... I bet he'll end up in Spain, probably at Real.
- Milos Krasic - Initial reaction: please no.

Hazard
I agree. The supplemental list reads like my wildest fantasy. Hazard, Hummels, Hamsik – give chelsea Triple H & we can win a treble next year. Hummels & Hamsik will likely have to wait for summer, but if we could snag Hazard now & throw in a Kalou or two to tide them over, that would help our width, age & creativity problems going forward.
Can't see Hazard choosing Chelsea unfortunately
Just a thought but does anybody else think that Xherdan Shaqiri would be an excellent addition, I thought he was arguably the best player at last summers Euro U-21 tournament (which Mata also played in) he also caused Man Utd all sorts of problems in this seasons CL. Would probably cost less than half as much as Hazard or Goetze at around 15m and he is a similar player in terms of style and age. We would face less competition in a race to sign him and I don’t see Basle having the ability to hold onto him!
Hulk is the player I want Chelsea to buy.
But seeing his buyout clause, its better we look at other targets.
absolute joke
HULK ha ha ha a two bit player playing in a crap league get real
I like Hulk a lot but I just don't see Porto playing ball.
Madrid is always making weird decisions, but I don’t see them letting Higuain go, I’d get rid of Benzema in a heartbeat if the choice came down to letting one go.
Do we really think Spurs are selling Modric with the way they’ve been playing? He and Bale are their ticket to CL money, and that’s worth more than anything they’d get for Modric. We’d have to splash out an obscene amount for him, and even then I highly doubt he’d be available until summer where they could reload, hopefully (in their mind) with CL revenue to come.
Everytime I watch Hazard I like him more. I just don’t know about Hummels though. I think he’s awesome, but I don’t know if he’s the right fit. Will he slot in next to Luiz or is that a jarring pairing?
Hulk no way jose
Benzema is scoring for fun in the spanish league higuan scored in reals last game so he definately aint comning to us Hazard is pure class Hummels is rexactly the player we are wanting at chelsea forget Modric Hulk is rubbish plays in a two bit league where Rickie Lambert Jason Rhodes Billy Sharp would all be prolific.
With some exceptions of course
there are many names on there I’d like to see them on the Chelsea team sheet – though I just think none of them above seem highly likely for January this year, especially January. Especially some in the list (and the mentions) – e.g. the Dortmund guys – I’d very much like to see with us are major contributors for their respective clubs and their ongoing campaign with no obvious and strong desire to leave (at least not openly and publicly articulated), others seemingly have their heads in the Spanish (and mostly, Real) clouds. Modric e.g. is a very good player I rate highly but after everything that happened in the summer a) Levy would rather break his neck than let him leave and b) after everything that happened during summer I don’t want him here
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Crazy list
1.) Gary Cahill – Overrated and wants 120k a week. We should look elsewhere
2.) Eden Hazard – Not moving till summer and will likely join Madrid. I think the boat has sailed on him
3.) Edinson Cavani – Probably will never happen.
4.) Luka Modric – Probably will never happen and with time Josh, Thiago and Sergi Roberto will be better than him. Will rather sign Sergi Roberto of Barca before touching him.
5.) Gonzalo Higuain – His real self is better than his virtual self with a better goal scoring record than Cristiano Ronaldo from open play than Real Madrid. Most likely move is in the summer.
6.) Mario Gotze – Not going to happen and will likely end up at Barca alongside Neymar and Messi
7.) Kaka – Will only be ineterested if it is a loan deal. Will cost 20mm+ plus another 8,7mm in wages a year.
8.) Hulk – Porto won’t do business so lets move on.
9.) Neymar – Spain bound.
10.) Milos Krasic – Agree with your please no.
Can someone please prove to me that the likes of Gaston Ramirez, Gatian, Jovetic and co are not available?
AVB said we'll get Cahill and...
A forward – presumably to replace Anelka. With Alex being replaced by Cahill, and AVB making a big point of recently saying that Chelsea thought we could win four competitions with this team at the start of the season, I can only see us buying more if we sell more. So if Malouda or Kalou leave we’l get someone else in.
As it’s January and we’ll have no chance buying any Napoli players, I can’t see us buying any really great players unless they come from outside of Europe – the only big thing we’re playing for now is the Champs League after all. As a guess, I’d say Cahill and De Bruyne (at a lower price than in the summer!) to come in, and maybe Krasnic ( :-( ) if malouda or kalou are sold.
I’m liking the rumours to Hazard and Lucas a lot though, my god do we need them right now! But by not going overboard and buying lots of established players we’re at least leaving room for the likes of Josh to develop a bit longer, making it unecesary to buy Modric/Hamsik, and just phase out Meireles instead.
Anyone else get the feeling that AVB/Terry aren’talowed to say it and this really is a transitional season?
Ganso might be available
Ribeiro just announced that they are prepared to listen to offers for Ganso. They’ve lied before and could be using this as a negotiation tactic to get Ganso to bend over, but if he is for sale, Chelsea should consider weighing up an offer for him.
To be honest, Ganso looks more likely to be a flop in Europe than Neymar or Lucas.
Not sure why I get that vibe.
Depends on where he plays on the pitch
If he is being deployed as an AM, then he will most likely flop as he lacks the speed etc….to play that position. If he is deployed in the CM position, he will most likely try and make it, but the issue here is his defensive attributes which is needed as a CM and he is poor in that aspect. As far as build up, passing, vision and creativity, he is miles ahead of Lampard and Merieles.
1 Cahill – Waiting for the owners approval if you believe the paper today, fine, just get it over with
2 – Hazard – what a player – but with his hefty price tag I suspect open of the other huge money clubs will outbid us on this one, we could get Lucas Moura for less. The 30M for Hazard quoted in the papers is too low…he is worth 40-50.
3 – Cavani – elite world class player – Napoli will not sell him or Hamsik to us this season since we are playing each other in February (though he is cup tied, and would have to sit out the match – it still helps an opponent just by him being there)
4 – Modric – outstanding, older than Lucas, probably a similar pricetag though – however, Spurs are terrible to do business with and it won’t happen in January
5 – Higuain – won’t happen – who would Mourinho let all those goals walk out the door in mid season, while they’re trying to stave off Barcelona?
6 – Gotze – won’t happen – he is not going anywhere for at least another year
7 – Kaka – pass, flop, washed up compared to what he would cost and how we remembered him
8 – Hulk – price tag is videogame-like – cannot see 100M being a wise purchase for any player
9 – Neymar – Real Madrid or Barcelona – next..
10 – Krasic – pass
-————————
For me, I’ll take Lucas, Cahill, a right back, and Higuain (if he will actually leave)
Unload some dead weight (Alex, Ferreira, Bosingwa, Mikel, one half of Kalouda (keep Kalou, sell Malouda), For extra defensive cover, recall one of the youth defenders from abroad.
De Bruyne speaks! Actual transfer possible?
“Chelsea are still interested in signing me and have a plan ready for me. It would be perfect if they’d sent me out on loan to another team first. Something like Thibaut Courtois at Atletico Madrid. He has made the right choice," De Bruyne told Sporza.
De Bruyne admits he would find it hard to stay at the Belgian champions for another season, but admits his club’s valuation of him could scupper any possible deal.
“Staying at Genk for another season is not an option for me. Chelsea were very serious last summer, but you never know what team shows an interest this time,” he continued.
"Maybe Genk’s asking price is too high. They want to receive as much as they got for Courtois [€9 million, (£7.5m)]. That’s a lot of money for a player from the Belgium league."
The midfielder insists he is not worried about joining Chelsea merely to play in the reserves like fellow Belgian youngster Romelu Lukaku as he believes just training with a club like the Blues opens many doors for a player.
“Lukaku’s situation at Chelsea doesn’t scare me,” he said. "He’s training with some of the best players in the world. Even if he doesn’t succeed at Chelsea, he’ll have become a better player.
“You can join pretty much any team once you’ve played at Chelsea.”
Quoted in goal.com – http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2012/01/04/2830014/genks-kevin-de-bruyne-chelsea-are-still-very-interested-in
Sounds like something is going ahead, it’d be annoying if we bought an anelka replacement who won’t play until next season though. :-(
Utter Madness
ha ha ha what other team spends £10 – £20 mon a playerb only to plonk him into the reserves utter madness why not spend £30 on a player that is guarenteed to get you goals that can play week in week out and improve the whole aspect of the team
Hmmm
muy interesante! Seems to have a pretty level head on his shoulders, which means I like him all the more now. Unlike those rumors floating about that Cahill wants 120k a week, haha.
It’s fair to say, though, that if the plan is to send him on loan then he may not be the only forward we would have in mind… if the plan is to keep him in the reserves, then he may start making some appearances. Either way, he seems very interested in the opportunity.
Yet maybe not till summer
https://twitter.com/#!/BluesChronicle/statuses/154576826776289280
Kevin De Bruyne thinks a January move to Chelsea is unlikely: “For me it would be better to end the season at Genk and then make the step.”
Wow, thats a long time till we see him playing for chelsea then
That seems to indicate that alynne is right and we’ll go for a mystery forward too, let’s hope there’s something in the S.American whizzkids rumours then… Revitalising our creative positions has got to be a must for this window :/

Hoping the same.
Our version of Javier Hernandez.
Hang on…wasn’t Ulises Davila supposed to be the same?
Hows he shaping up?
by RamStamford on Jan 4, 2012 3:54 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions
Not de Bruyne... they're talking about rumors of a certain young star from South America
that is definitely not de Bruyne! ;)
ABSOLUTE MADNESS
why do we need him just spending money on a kid to put him in the reserves but moaning to high heaven about Cahill who is a steal at £7m wanting top dollar wages utter madness
My list
Is short and sweet:
Hazard
Moutinho
Higuain
VdW
Center back not named Cahill
Interesting that Moutinho didn’t get a mention on that list. Porto may tell Chelsea to screw itself, but he’s the type of midfielder we need – in a way that Meireles just isn’t.
Mata can fly
The fact that Mata can fly makes me love him even more. Great picture above.
Hamsik
Is who I think would fit best out of anyone on that list.
After that, Hazard & Hummels would be optimal…
Doubt any of them happen though, sadly
Christian Erikson
Firstly if we buy a striker rather than a creative midfielder I don’t think we are going to get any better. Watching Chelsea what surprises me is not how bad our strikers are but the lack of chances they get. This for me is the big problem with Torres (of course he has flopped and I wish he did do more) but he doesn’t miss many chances, either he is not getting in the right positions or for me the more likely problem is the lack of supply. With a front three of him/Drog, Sturridge and Mata we should be banging in the goals but we aren’t, for me that comes down to the midfield.
Second I would love all the players in the list, the one who seems to be always left out, and I am sad that there aren’t even rumours about is Christian Erikson. If you watched the england denmark game last year you would have seen how he totally outplayed Wilshire. I’ve also watched a few Ajax games to get a closer look and the boy has everything. Skill, speed and he can pass. For me he is better than the over hyped Goetze and Hamsik (although I have not seen much of him) and would be the perfect January buy

Seconded
I made this account just to agree with you, i wonder why he isent mentioned as much as the other talents…
It looks like he likes the long pass, fits perfect with Sturridge?
His father (and agent) and Chelsea have had some issues in the past
He’d be an excellent fit, but I don’t know if he’d be one we’d likely have a realistic shot at. He just seems to be bound to end up elsewhere.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 4, 2012 5:01 PM GMT up reply actions
HA HA HA ANYBODY BUT ERIKSON!
ERIKSON GIVE A BREAK MATE THE DUTCH LEAGUE IS ABSOLUTE CRAP TOTALLY DIFFERENT.HAMSIK AND GOETKE ARE JUST HYPE.
Marco Reus signed for Dortmund…will join in the summers…17.5 M great for them…as someone who has grown fond of that club as well over the past 10 years they have done a nice job…
Does this make it more likely Goetze will leave for silly money in the summer?
by David Drabble on Jan 4, 2012 5:07 PM GMT up reply actions
No
BVB have come out and said Mario Götze is expected to stay till 2013. The big money signing of Reus is meant to signal to Götze, Hummels and alike the club is willing so spend and are serious to compete for domestic titles and CL next year
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I want Modric and Hazard
I want this to happen so badly. I have a kidney available if this will persuade anyone.
Also, and in this area I’m less passionate, but we need a LB and a RB. More than we need a Cahill. Don’t care who particularly, just some fullbacks. Ash has been shit for a while now (occasional moment of brilliance like the late assist a couple of days ago notwithstanding) and Bosingwa / Ferreira has never cut it for me.
by FootieFromAfar on Jan 4, 2012 4:48 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
Totally agree with the RB LB part
The right full back position is definitely our weakest and at left back the dramatic demise of Ashley Cole over the last 18 months, from the best in the world to defensive liability, has been greatly underestimated and under reported by most, we should have flogged him to Madrid for huge money at the end of the double winning season because since he has been average at best. After right back I actually think our next weakest position is in goal, Cech has been awful this season, and hasn’t been the same since the head injury, time to get rid of him I think. He never makes a save you wouldn’t expect the most average goalkeeper to make and he make too many mistakes. His lack of bravery and poor handling cost us 3 preventable goals, and 6 valuable points, over the Christmas period alone. Even as bad as I feel Cech has been I dread the thought of him getting injured as the cover is barely championship standard in my opinion. At least I hear young Courtois is doing well, and what ever happened to Delac?
What I want is really irrelevant. When was the last time we got a really high-profile target?
One which everyone on the planet wanted? It just doesn’t happen. Everyone wants to go to Madrid or Barca. We’ll go for some low-profile top talent like Mata.
In other news, Cahill wants too much money. He isn’t even that great, so the club should tell him to fuck off and go for Bruno Alves, Subotic, maybe even Hummels. I mean Madrid got Sahin for 9m, why can’t we go and get Mats?
And FWIW, Sahin had a ridiculously underpriced buyout that Madrid exercised the day it went into effect
Dortmund would not have sold if they weren’t contractually obligated.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 4, 2012 5:03 PM GMT up reply actions
If we're gonna have to piss away a ton of money in order to get another
highly wanted target (which Torres was not), then I’d rather we go for someone more unknown, but with the same potential.
Your perception has been (rightly or not) coloured by the failings of the last 12 months
But Torres was a humongous deal at the time. Both in terms of money (record fee and all) and perception.
Good point. But I don't consider Torres to have been widely wanted. It was either us,
City, or stay at Liverpool. He wouldn’t move to Madrid cause of his Atletico connections, not United because of his Liverpool connections. Barca flat-out didn’t want him. It was us or City, and we were the title challengers at the time.
I think our other signing from that same day probably falls into that category then
David Luiz was less proven at the highest level, but pretty much every club in the world looking at defenders had interest in both he and Subotic
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 4, 2012 5:35 PM GMT up reply actions
"Us" is even intangible
in that context – I will never forget that moment when crowds of Chelsea fans kept screaming – in horror, and not awe! :D
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
True but
We payed over the odds for Torres when he had been off form for quite a while and wasn’t on the radar of the likes of Madrid or Barca since they tend to buy guys on form with a good future ahead of them unlike Chelsea who prefer yesterdays stars,ie Torres, Shevchenko, Ballack, Deco. Fact is the last time Chelsea got a player everyone actually wanted was Michael Essien.
Hamsik!
You have no idea how much I’d love seeing him at Chelsea-though it’ll probably take till summer,if at all, since we gotta play em in the CL. Read a couple of reports that we’re interested in Jorge Fucile from Porto for our fullback issues…he’s dependable, but not too great. And for that money Cahill can fuck off. Always been a big Subotic fan. But Hummels will work too! :P Plus,Marvin Martin from Sochaux should be pretty cheap-and he’s a decent playmaker. And there were a few rumours linking us to Sebastian Giovinco in the summer,too-which would be cool. But RB first. And a guy who can defend,at that.
by Avinash Mohan on Jan 4, 2012 6:36 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
I'd much rather take a crack at his partner in the defense
Subotic would be an ideal type of player to partner with Luiz
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 4, 2012 6:44 PM GMT up reply actions
Well, he doesnt attract the same attention as Hummels. Why do you think he's a better partner
for Luiz than Hummels?
Doesn't venture forward as much, plays better long balls
His strengths are very much complimentary to the things Luiz does very well. Hummels tends to get a lot of the spotlight over there, but Subotic is the rock that allows him to do what he does in many cases. I’d just tend to think Luiz/Subotic would be a better overall pairing than Hummels/Luiz due to the way they tend to play.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 4, 2012 7:18 PM GMT up reply actions
Sort of
Also,Subotic is huge for set pieces. And a very rock-solid defender. Hummels looks a lot better playing alongside Subotic at Dortmund than he does for the national team. But Dortmund are very well set financially-no real urge to sell. They may just sell Barrios and be done with business.
by Avinash Mohan on Jan 4, 2012 8:21 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions
Seemingly there were rumours
Borussia could be in a financial crisis after the big money transfer – given the fact they set a cap of € 5m themselves – but their chief executive has told it would pose no problems to the club financing the deal
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Agree with that
Even I think Subotic is better partner for Luiz but wont mind Hummels..I somehow see Howedes as the best partner for Luiz
I'd also guess
Hummels and Luiz together wouldn’t be the perfect fit, since I have a hard time imagining Hummels could complement Luiz’ imperfections. Though the thought of landing him would be really amazing nonetheless since he is such a fantastic player. I just can’t imagine it happening though; Borussia isn’t exactly the type of a selling club, no signs they are in urgent need of money and need to cash in on certain players and I didn’t hear on any rumours he is unhappy with the club or the club unhappy with him
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Your epiphany will come. Just gotta open yourself up. Don't lose faith! :P
Though I was once blind, now I can see!
FUCILE WAS ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE LAST WORLD CUP AND I FOR ONE WAS TELLING EVERYBODY I GO TO THE BRIDGE WITH THAT HE SHOULDVE BEEN BROUGHT I BELUEVE THAT WE NEED TO ADAPT WITH WHAT WEVE GOT AND GIVE THE DEFENCE MORE COVER WHY NOT PLAY ( IF WE GET CAHILL ) ROMEU AND LUIZ IN THE HOLDING ROLES AND PLAY CECH IVANOVIC CAHILL TERRY COLE / ROMEU LUIZ / RAMIRES LAMPARD MATA /
WITH TORRES OR STURRIDGE UP FRONT. 4 – 2 – 3 – 1 ALLOWING TORRES THE CONFIDENCE TO DO THE JOB HE WAS BROUGHT FOR TO GET IN THE BOX AND SCORE GOALS RATHER THAN PLAYING AS A MIDFIELDER
Fucile's terrible, dude.

Lets be realistic...
we are not getting any of those players now in January
When can i get my Dwight Howard Brooklyn Nets Jersey?
Question is
Will it be one of the ones that we want.
1)-Gary Cahill – Think he would be a good buy at 7m, not sure he is actually that great though, would prefer Subotic.
2)-Eden Hazard – Definately the sort of quality we should be looking at but I can’t see him going anywhere but Madrid,in fact I think he said himself that’s the only place he wants to go.
3)-Edinson Cavani – A good age, and a proven class act at the top level, would be a great buy even at 35m.
4)-Luka Modric – Not going to happen, he has a lengthy contract and Spurs proved last summer they are willing to reject huge offers for him even after he hands in a transfer request. With the way they are performing this season, with almost guaranteed champions league next year they will be in an even stronger position to hold onto him.
5)-Gonzalo Higuain – In my opinion there isn’t a better finisher on the planet at the moment, would be my first choice striker buy but i think Madrid would be mad to sell him, although Mourinho does seem to prefer Benzema these days so perhaps I’m missing something.
6)-Mario Gotze – Not going anywhere in January as Dortmund are expecting a top performance at the Euro’s to boost his value even further, he would probably be the player I would most like to see at the club.
7)-Kaka – Only an idiot would suggest this one
8)-Hulk – I don’t buy into all the hype about this guy, there are better players available for less than Porto want for him.
9)-Neymar – Has already signed for Barcelona in a €45m deal, moving after the 2014 WC, if Santos break the deal they have to pay Barcelona €20m in compensation.
10)-Milos Krasic – He can’t get a game for Juventus and wouldn’t start for Chelsea, although I heard he is being considered for a loan deal until the end of the season as a replacement for for Anelka which isn’t actually the worst decision ever.
Unfortunately from all the above I think only Cahill and Krasic are likely to happen this month given the others circumstances with their current clubs and CL eligibility.
transfer TALK
why is it that we are even listing players that we know we havent got a cat in hells chance of getting!! CAVANI HAZARD NEYMAR MOURA HULK all would cost the earth and HIGUAIN scored for Real in their last game so he is definately not coming to us MODRIC we wasted months pre season trying to buy him and got nowhere we did the same the pre season before with Neymar. KAKA is laughable he is about 3 seasons way past his sell buy date and thats being conservative. HULK give me a break theres a kid at Huddersfield Jason Rhodes and Doncasters Billy Sharp both prolific who could score 20 -30 goals in the portuguese league. KRASIC absolute joke if Juventus arent playing him there has to be a reason “HE IS CRAP”. CAVANI plays in a team that attack with speed we dont he could be another Torres.HAZARD is class i would love us to break the bank and him CAHILL is quality and can score goals too. PATO for the guile and creativy and VAN DER WEIHL for right back. But I reckon its all talk and we would be better off getting rid of the shite KALOU, MIKEL, MALOUDA, BOSINGWA ALEX AND PROMOTE THE LIKES OF CHABALOH PIAZON LUKAKU HUTCHISON to the first team squad blood them against pompey and give them experience as the EPL has gone. The Fa cup is up for grabs and play them against the lesser lights in the EPL this would give regular first teamers a rest in time for the CL
