Nice.

I hereby welcome you to the WAGNH-Over-30 club. There are drinks over there in the corner, donuts and some pastries over there, and a cold glass of tears shed over our ages over here.

Yay!

2 people older than me! It’s the small things in life I clutch onto (that is not meant with any innuendo).

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 11:15 PM GMT up reply actions

If you live near a Walmart, you can get a 32 count box of...

…generic lactase for like $6. It’s probably similar at other stores. You take one as you start eating something with dairy, two if you’re going to eat a bunch. It’s basically one tablet per serving of dairy. The effect only works for dairy eaten in a 30-45 minute window, so you’d have to take more after that time. It’s not 100%, and you might have some trial and error until you figure it out perfectly, but plenty of people use it effectively all the time. It contains the lactase your body doesn’t produce by itself any more, and it breaks down the lactose.

I hope you it works for you, and you can start enjoying ice cream again!

Oh, and don't go too wild at first, and you should still...

Yeah I don't plan to go crazy

Next time I go to Walmart I’ll have to look for some.

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 11:41 PM GMT up reply actions

That's mostly what it's for.

People who want the occasional treat.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 30, 2012 11:49 PM GMT up reply actions

Well, there's two types

actual lactose intolerance, regarding the trouble processing the sugar (which, you need to be careful of dairy free substitutes because some vegetables produce lactose)… and then there is what people call lactose intolerance, which is really an allergy to the fat in cow’s milk. For the latter, you can substitute with other animal milk, like goat’s milk.

My mom has the latter issue, but eats ice cream and things she shouldn’t ALL the time.

by alynne4307 on Jan 31, 2012 5:51 AM GMT up reply actions

There is rice milk and soy milk, too

and of course, coconut milk. All of them replace milk relatively well, and they are imho more widely available than goat milk

EASY!

The bestest flavor from the bestest shop-

Tiramisu ice cream from Toscanini’s (it’s a special flavor they dont always carry): http://www.tosci.com/

I see they’ve added some new flavors I need to get there to try. Yay samples! Also… this ice cream shop is so good, that when they got in trouble for tax evasion for almost 10 years, their customers bailed them out and donated some $30k. ’Arry could use their kind of love.

Not sure if I can decide which is worse

a) JC Penney using sacred Mozart for their shitty ad
b) Me using it as inspiration to literally spend the last hour and half bouncing from video to video on YouTube watching/listening to various renditions of Requiem, and the Queen of the Night Aria from The Magic Flute (thank you, Amadeus movie for the links inbetween).

One of the good things of Mozart is

it’s always recognizable. Even if you never heard a piece, you know upon the first bars it’s Mozart. Mozart’s music – in minor – always had that easy on the ear and floating elegance … it’s like a feeling. Like a bottle of champaigne

You guys are the new happy recipients of

my bitching about work! Too many followers from my office on my social networks… so I shall vent here.

How is it that a company full of people that are supposed to be smart entrepreneurial types cannot manage to look up how to do the simplest of tasks on our software? Uploading a file isn’t exactly hard. We even have instructions built in to help people through it! The only possible way that someone could not know how to upload a file is if they dont know how to use a computer. Clearly the kind of employees and customer a SaaS company should have. : |

End of rant.

by DPeezy on Jan 31, 2012 4:31 PM GMT up reply actions

One of my biggest pet peeves

Our office is notorious for replying all on most all team emails that dont actually require it. Never the ones that do. Everyone likes to show off to the company to try to demonstrate how “smart” or supportive of something they are. Only they end up showing what annoying jackoffs they can be.

Don't forget to bury your shark meat

I had lamb steak once in Iceland. I think I had to take a second mortgage out to afford it, but it was well worth it.

by DPeezy on Jan 31, 2012 6:27 PM GMT up reply actions

I was willing to try reindeer

but settled for a tiny bit of lamb that I am not sure was lamb. I think they ran out of lamb and gave us whale or something instead. It was too… chewy. Not bad, though. Not willing to try any puffin, though… doesn’t matter anyhow since, as you mentioned, it is expensive as fun, out there. I wanted to buy a cucumber and it cost $5. It looked like a very pathetic vegetable, at that. Oh… I did have a lamb hot dog… so I guess that counts. One of the best priced meals you can get there.

The shark thing is great… they manage to get most of the tourists with that, but no one there really eats it. My friend insisted on trying fish jerkey shit… she opened it in the car while we were out near Vik, and it smelled like terrible and fish food combined. We got to drive all the way back to Reykjavik with that stench. PU!

It's funny to me

that it is often the folks I would think would want to talk about him the least, that somehow end up talking about him the most… or at least striking up the convo (pun not intended).

I was sad this thread died out last night… I was hoping to see some funny posts from folks, but it got awfully serious on WAGNH yesterday. I suppose games like we’ve been having will do that to a crowd.

In other news, I am working from home today, because yesterday was so bad that I decided I couldn’t look at other people this morning. Also, someone got jumped outside of my apartment and I’ve yet to determine what form of protection I plan to carry on my person while walking home at night. Big decisions.

It happened in two places

Soon after the violence, a game at the Cairo Stadium between Al-Ismailiya and Zamalek teams was called off as a mark of respect.
But state TV then showed video of sections of the stadium on fire. The announcer said fans of Zamalek were protesting the cancellation and set some sections of the stadium alight.

Next couple of weeks in EPL

include a lot of matches between teams that sort of surround Chelsea on the table. Can’t decide if I want draws or losses for the few floating below us. Suppose it depends on what Chelsea manage this weekend.

Campeones, campeones, ole ole ole!

With a glorious 5-3 win tonight (following a 5-2 win in the semis), our Wed. Night Rec League team has won back-to-back-to-back-to-…-to-back (I’ve honestly lost count) championships!

Yours truly scoring one and assisting another – we were up by 5 before just sitting back and defending against the catch-up rule / extra man nonsense. Two dodgy penalties late on made it much closer though than it ever was.

Pumped!

Also… I just saw… not worthy of a read or a response. If he’s out of line, I’ll let the folks in charge take care of it… or the court of public opinion. I will apologize to you Kevin, that your reports turn into some crazy mess of somewhat OT debate, and I’ve not helped. But I’m gonna save myself the bother. I’m finding lots of folks take things more personally that I’d thought or intended, so I’ll have to tread carefully. A tongue in cheek take on the Liverpool FC song they sing against Chelsea,

And our quick! rise to winning championships through the bank of Roman. Their version uses the same song frame as Carefree, the Chelsea song, and is not very polite, and goes on about their past glories. Or at least I think it is!

I knew that

There are multiple reasons

1) I like to show that we’re capable of taking some teasing.
2) I think co-opting something bad and making it our own is fun.
3) It gave me the chance to stick a bunch of trophies in the logo and that tickled me.

Convo about Haiti and Kreyol continued from OT thread #1....

I think you mentioned having been from Florida… something about local MLS teams or a team. Or teams that should start there. I remember the most random things, at times.

Now, not my business to tell folks what they should or shouldnt care about, but I would certainly encourage you to learn the language and heritage you have from there. Amazing story, that country… not yet finished, of course. And I also encourage you to go, if you have an opportunity to do so. A safe one, of couse, with a trusted group (be it family or otherwise). The unfortunate truth is that it is a very different culture, in some ways, to here… so much like travelling anywhere new, you’ll want to have some support with you. Also good, because it can get.. heavy. As emotional and girly as some will make it out, while I was able to hold it together on the trip, when I got home I think I just cried at random for several days. You just see things you are so unaccustomed to, and some of it is the type of stuff that makes you question humanity. But, the people I had met- I don’t think I could meet harder working and more loving people ever. It may just be a saying here, but I’ve never met people in as little position to give, that would literally give me the shirt off their back.

They have little resources, but they will be your friends for life, and will find ways to communicate with you. I’ve got a few email addresses, phone numbers, and I keep up with one of the students on Facebook. Takes weeks sometimes to hear back, but it is great to see they aren’t totally cut off.

You should also be proud, because if I can be so bold to generalize.. Haitians are BEAUTIFUL! I had never seen so many gorgeous girls that could easily walk into modeling, if given an opportunity (of course, if that is what they wanted). Ahh.. I could go on and on about how great an experience it was, and how great the people are.

by alynne4307 on Feb 4, 2012 5:09 AM GMT reply actions

I definitely plan to go there some day...

You mean you know ManCity fans?!?!

Haha… jk. Sort of. I was reading some other place where someone claiming to be American mentioned being upset that ManU didnt win. I was like “how original?”. I mean, folks can be fans of who they will be fans of, and ManU has marketed well, but people really just eat that shite up, don’t they? Maybe this summer’s supposed matches with a couple of other EPL teams can change that a bit, especially as we’re seeing some growing interest or push with the sport.

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 3:47 AM GMT up reply actions

Yeah I know ONE

I know a few ManU fans but most of them are of the glory hunter variety who just say they support ManU because they think it’s cool. :cP

Official troll of WAGNH and CFC

by Sabrina Dessipe on Feb 8, 2012 12:17 PM GMT up reply actions

That is precisely what most ManU fans are in these parts

They hear about them winning the league and going up against Barca, see them play some exhibition games over here, and suddenly go “that’s my team”. It happens in lots of sports that way, but especially when certain sports aren’t so dominant in a given area. People go with what they hear.

I suppose I could say much the same for my affinity with the Spain NT. I mean, I didn’t pay much mind to them before, but when the US was knocked out of the WC (expectedly so), I wanted to watch and have a team… of those left, I almost chose Germany (because of my background), but sort of liked what I heard about and saw from Spain. So I was hooked. Then they played a friendly in my neighborhood, and that was that.

It makes me mad that ManU is the only EPL team that really puts much effort into marketing themselves over here. If there was more of it from other teams, we’d probably see people get a little more involved with the game, even if just to pick a team they like. Looks like Liverpool will get a push from their new American owners. Heck, they’ve already picked the Red Sox’s training gear company to make their kits in the future. Weird. And they have their exhibition games coming… Lebron James owns some stock in ’em. This whole country will be ManU v. Liverpool before we know it!

by alynne4307 on Feb 8, 2012 6:41 PM GMT up reply actions

My time with the WC was similar to yours it seems

it’s also in small part why I chose Arsenal to support. Arsenal (and other clubs I guess :cP) definitely should spend more time building a brand over here but it’s a big world sand there are other markets like ASIA they get to have all the fun :c(

Liverpool and ManU have a lot of history on their sides as well as money, though that’s not really a problem for Chelsea.

by alynne4307 on Feb 9, 2012 4:29 AM GMT up reply actions

It's a planet

It’s a planet because I had a song I had to memorize in grade school to remember the order of the planets. And Pluto is in that song, and I can’t go back on it now.

Also… it goes around the sun. It doesn’t go around another planet. It has moons. It’s a planet. I will also punch the person that decided it shouldn’t be the 9th planet, because, to be perfectly childish about it, I think they just wanted their 15 minutes for a shocking discovery! Really, all they did was say that Pluto wasn’t massive enough. Apparently to them, it needs to eat a hamburger.

Basically, it’s a choice between getting rid of the planet that doesn’t fit with the rest or have twenty or thirty that don’t. By the time they’re all catalogued, there may be hundreds like Pluto.

I am sick… and dying. Of a head cold. Not really, but close. Who has crazy tricks or remedies?

Advil Cold and Sinus is usually my thang, but it is not cutting it. Taking vitamin C, drinking tea with honey and lemon, eating spicy foods. This congestion is a bitch. I probably have to rock a Vicks tent soon.

by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 5:53 AM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, Vitamin C is not what you're looking for...

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Go outside. Get some activity/exercise. Strong believer in “fighting” it actively rather than passively; usually works for me.
Nyquil/Dayquil if you need to function (serious dark magic that shit. Nyquil knock you out for a good 7-8 hours, so heads up on that.)

by DPeezy on Feb 12, 2012 3:37 AM GMT up reply actions

I can't take Nyquil

isn’t that funny? And my luck? I’m allergic to acetaminophen in large doses (I think.. .it is the common ingredient in all the cold medicines I’ve totally gotten fucked up by). It’s basically like I am suuuuper drunk-like whenever I take it. Slurred words and everything… it must be good entertainment for those around.

Some other people tell me we all dont get enough vitamin C… like you are supposed to take some ridiculous amounts to get it to work. Weird. Thanks for the tips… I get colds like crazy… but haven’t had the flu in over 10 years. Guess I get what I deserve, for that.

by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 3:54 AM GMT up reply actions

Sucks about the acetaminophen

It is a main ingredient in Nyquil/Dayquil – the pain/headache/fever-fighting part.

Like the Most Interesting Man in the World…I don’t often take legal drugs, but when I do, I prefer acetaminophen.

It and the game related posts are making me sad, which probably makes this cold suck all the more. by alynne4307 on Feb 12, 2012 4:00 AM GMT up reply actions

Haha...I literally just finished reading all the comments in the game thread and the two reaction posts

I skimmed many, but I already knew what the reaction would be, so I found them mostly just amusing. I did get a big kick out of Graham’s extra grumpiness.

I had SiriusXM going in the car this morning, which just simply had a live simulcast of Chelsea Radio. But even through their incompetent commentating, I got a good sense of just how shitty we were.

Being away from the computer did afford me the luxury of dismissing the whole thing with a few choice expletives over a period of 5-10 minutes, as I had to return my concentration to the roads. NorCal’s finest fair-weather drivers were out this morning…a slight dusting of snow at Carson Pass resulted in at least TWO flipped cars in a space of a few miles.

Having spent the day frolicking in the snow (worst ski-season in a long time, but still great…and smaller crowds…and there’s no happier sight than a Bernese Mountain Dog playing in the snow), eating Blue Dog pizza, and kicking back in a Tahoe resort with background TV and a few cold ones…it’s turned into a fantastic day.

by DPeezy on Feb 12, 2012 4:32 AM GMT up reply actions

Sounds not bad at all

There’s nothing quite like having plans that allow you to step away from the game and remember there are other and better things to spend time on. I’ve not had such plans lately- I need to start making them. (This probably requires leaving Boston, seeing as all my close friends have done so already.. I’m slow on the uptake.)

In a month I’ll get to again experience some of the joy of the poor driving in northern-CA. And that is a review of my friend, a born and bred Masshole. At least the weather is nice and the food is good in San Fran, even when the driving is not. And I only have to deal with it and the weird jaywalking laws for a few days.

They usually are bad

I remember being so excited for the music award show season to kick in when I was a youngster… mind you the first of the year used to be the AMA’s… feels so long ago. Because they all went to shit. I don’t expect much of them anymore, but I endured Maroon 5 to get to the Beach Boys themselves. And I probably squealed.

I did appreciate Adele getting the biggest ovation of the night… at least there is some hope for people that can sing and write music, and don’t have to look like a supermodel to do it. She may have had more applause than the Whitney tributes (shhh dont tell).

I still think Bruno Mars looks like a potential father to Chicharito.

UGH!

I’m farked. My cable pricing just went up $25 (for increased internet speeds that supposedly happened, even though my connection has behaved pretty much the same between the 6mbps I had and the 25mbps I have now)… and they get to hold be hostage. Why? Because they are the only provider that gives me FSC for less than the premium-most package. Why must I like this sport?!?! And why did I ever decide to not have a roommate?

I figure you Internet and TV-afficianados could empathize with my rant. Fuck TV services. Seriously.

I think I am going to redub this “April’s ranting thread”. It gives me more than 140 characters to vent my frustrations.

by alynne4307 on Feb 14, 2012 2:17 AM GMT reply actions

Wow. Really?

Everyone around me lets me have FSC in almost every package.

I was shocked

I knew I hadn’t had it until I moved (I had Comcast at my previous apartment)… thus my lack of watching much of the sport before moving. I was pretty relieved when the World Cup came around, because I could catch a game that wasn’t the random MLS match. But I moved to a location where my current cable company, RCN, does things to cater to the demographic, in their opinion (it is very Portuguese, Brazilian, and Hispanic). So yay, FSC is included in the standard lineup, as well as some Spanish-speaking channels where I can sometimes catch some big matches. And some local channel that plays all the Revs games.

I am trying to determine if I was just really fortunate with pricing before. I mean, it was awesome when I first got it… cost maybe $60 a month for cable and internet. Then it jumped in the summer and they took away the contract pricing, so it can just keep jumping. Now it is about $100 because they stopped outsourcing their tech support and bumped internet speed. Now, in comparison to some companies, not so bad. But definitely worse than a couple years ago. And the best part? If I wasnt a customer and signed up today, I could get double the internet speed, HD converter included (I currently get charged for a regular converter that I am not even sure I need), same channels and then some, for $10 less. Locked in for 2 years. Assholes.

by alynne4307 on Feb 14, 2012 2:46 AM GMT up reply actions

We've given up cable a long time ago

The only reason I have even a few channels is that Comcast Internet-only is MORE expensive than Internet+limited-basic (which is local channels + local access + shopping ). I have to call every 6-12 months (depending on my current deal), but that’s a small price to pay keeping my Internet+TV bill around $50.

I stream everything else, the vast majority legally, too (Netflix, Hulu, ESPN3, TBS/TNT iPad apps, etc.). The occasional $1 for a Redbox, or an iTunes rental.

My biggest pet peeves currently all involve NOT being able to pay for what I want, so I have to resort to grey-market internet sources. I’d give an arm & leg to be able to stream HBO/Showtime WITHOUT a cable subscription and to not have FSC limit their stupid service and Apps.

I can’t wait for the day that content-providers get with the fucking times.

by DPeezy on Feb 14, 2012 3:18 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Right?

I mean, give me an a la carte model with a minimum of channels or something. I don’t even have a fucking HD converter because when I got the cable service, it cost to have HD (see things better? pfft, I could give a damn… that’s what I bother you guys in game threads for). Now I’ve learned that HD channels are included in my service, but I have to take a bus to go to the office mid-day and pick up a damned HD converter, and then pay for it. Not sure it’s worth it. Except maybe for games on ESPN.

Apple TV isnt a bad idea… except that it doesn’t have the sports I want, so that sucks. My friends do that method, though. I’ll have to take stock of all the shows I watch and see where I can stream them all.. but only if I can figure out the hookup between my laptop and TV (hate watching stuff on a computer) and if I can finagle a magical connection with my Tivo, somehow (I feel like that’s a no). Hey… remember WebTV?!?! So funny.

when there was no real official OT thread so hijacking a thread and posting meaningless memes was all fun and cool.

Now with a proper OT section where you could post stupid memes and there’s no boundary to hijacking and trolling it’s just plain boring …

So the lesson would be: we don’t have anything OT to discuss here. We only love breaking the rules. Oh meow :D

Always here to serve! :D

By the way – may I ask a decent question now that I have your attention? How comes rules for you are stricter than for everyone else? Since last Saturday now you’re not even allowed to ask the score in a gamethread whilst I’m sure besides you, many others did do that in the past (me included, I didn’t really ask about the score but I asked who scored the goal and this is equally stupid)

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 20, 2012 10:50 PM GMT up reply actions

It's not the first time I asked

maybe it was because you were losing. I would’ve thought by the reaction that you we’re like 3 or more goals behind.

I thought it was an innocent enough question but I guess since I’m not a fan anything can look like me making fun of Chelsea. I guess somethings I say can easily upset other people because I’m a rival fan or whatever. The guys in charge have to make sure I don’t cause a riot or something. That’s what I think anyway might be a better question for someone else…

Kinda weird to get yelled at for asking the score though :cP

by Sabrina Dessipe on Feb 20, 2012 11:12 PM GMT up reply actions

True, though it would be kinda weird

because it’s not really you’re trolling or making fun of us – those of us who have attended the gamethreads more often know you and other users do that quite often and there is no problem with that – as witnessed by the reactions in that gamethread. Just the newer members seem to miss that … and of course, there is that guy whom I suspect to be a second-account of someone who has been lasered recently

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 10:22 AM GMT up reply actions

I think it was assumed you meant it...

Well it was my first comment in the thread

I can see how someone (most people) could get that impression though.

Even if I was poking fun at Chelsea, which I’m known to do from time to time the reaction was a little crazy. And now I’m not allowed to ask the score anymore! :cP

I don't even know what to put in here knowing Steve can just change it anytime he wants (the jerk) :cP also something about trolling CFC and WAGNH

by Sabrina Dessipe on Feb 21, 2012 2:20 PM GMT up reply actions

Maybe, though ...

it’s not the first time you come into a thread (whatever the score might be) and ask the score, and given the timezone where you live it seems credible you don’t know the actual score. That’s why I said it seemed clear for those who have seen you do it more often. I wonder what would happen if someone else would have asked the score?

And don’t forget as far as I’m concerned it were only 2 people reacting that strangely

Just want to make sure if that was set up as a new rule (nobody was allowed to ask the score!) or if it’s only you … I tend to ask stupid things in gamethreads too, especially as I have the tendency to get bored and then … well … switch to multitasking and let the game run by …

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 2:31 PM GMT up reply actions

Oh yeah, I agree the reaction was...

…ridiculous, but it did seem a little gloaty. : )

I wish more of us had either ignored it, or not blown up. As I said, I assumed you were gloating, but I just said something like, “You know perfectly well what the score is. : P” which isn’t hostile, I don’t think.

Better grips for curl and it's a bit sturdier in general as well

I find it much easier to pass and shoot accurately in adiPowers than I do in the adiZeros, which are like footgloves*.
*Not to say they’re bad for shooting and passing, but the other ones are like magic for me.

I'd also try out a pair of Puma King Finales as well.

I think they’re better than the Tiempos, and you can get decent deals for them right now. They offer really good touch, but they’re obviously not going to do adiPower-style magic. They’re also not super-light, like an F50, but they’re not tanks either. The new SL ones aren’t worth it compared to the regular ones.

Really, I don't think you'd go too far wrong with any of...

…the King Finales, adiPowers, CTR360 Maestri, Laser, Tiempo, or even an adiPure, PowerCat, or Umbro Speciali.

If speed isn’t a huge premium for you, and it really isn’t for all but the very best players and even then not AMs so much, I’d go for something that will improve your touch and give you a bit of protection. As I said, the Kings are a good option for value, particularly if you’re on a budget, but the adiPower and CTR are better if you want really good swerve or control, and have a bit more cash to spend.

I have been looking at the CTR's as well.

I really like the idea of them, but I just didn’t know if those “control pods” actually did anything. I’ve never worn a pair of Puma cleats, so I’ll have to give them a shot.

by Kjell on Feb 16, 2012 7:52 AM GMT up reply actions

CTR's are nice.

But my pair ripped after season of use; admittedly that was about twenty five weeks of training every day.

Have a pair of T90s, the old pair – the one Rooney used to wear. Nice and comfortable.

Graham, what positions do you play?

by TPalmer on Feb 16, 2012 8:00 AM GMT up reply actions

They're actually really good for control.

I’ve never had a pair myself, since I don’t play regularly enough to spend that much, but I did try a pair once.

My boots are a pair of white and black King Finales and white, navy, and silver v1.08s* I got ludicrously cheap a few years back. I’ll be honest and say that Puma were shit for a long time, and the PowerCats still sort of are, but they’ve really started to turn it around.

Something to do with SB Nation.

They did some maintenance to the site which required them to take down the FanPosts, and it undid all that sort of thing in the process of coming back up. I’m sure Graham or Stephen can put it back if they wish.

More OT nonsense

Just read through some Bundesliga related stuff … it is sad that reading about Bundesliga these days lifts me up much more than reading about the EPL … and saw this meme by an angry HSV supporter and thought “Hey, that would suit us too”

(comment: I don’t mean to criticize, rightfully or not, AVB, his abilities, and else, just as a reflection on opinions of various Chelsea fans recently)

Honestly, that perfectly describes how I feel about Chelsea right now.

I just don’t know which way to go. On one hand, AVB seems to be trying to set a world record for looking like an incompetent boob, but on the other, the players aren’t performing either. I’m not certain fixing one problem will fix the other, or if we need to make a change on both sides.

No idea ... but you were clearly discussing

Chelsea’s management in a serious manner (so not jokingly) so that would be on-topic … in any on topic thread of the last weeks there was been one branch dedicated to AVB :P

Adjectives and Adverbs

moved from an on topic thread:

You never learned that in German there are no real differences between adverbs and adjectives? The same word can be used as an adverb or adjective … but you could form a special adverb with -weise (making normalerweise the adverb of normal). Those "special adverbs" are used in other context than "normal adverbs"

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 3:18 PM GMT reply actions

No, I never learned that.

I don’t think we really got into the really deep grammar stuff.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 3:24 PM GMT up reply actions

Well, I know it's an adverb, but we never really got into the details.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 3:34 PM GMT up reply actions

Is the difference that the "-weise" adverbs are used in the more...

…abstract sense, like “Normally, I would have the pizza.” rather than the sense of describing an event as happening normally? That’s horribly phrased, but I just can’t think of how to describe it more properly.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Feb 21, 2012 3:45 PM GMT up reply actions

Being a native speaker I can't really explain the rule

but it seems you’re right. I think you use the “weise-adverb” when you’re referring to a state whereas in cases of the classic English usage of adverbs – referring to an action or better – referring to a verb – you don’t use the “weise-adverb”. You would say for “I walked slowly besides the river” “Ich lief langsamerweise am Fluss entlang” though it wouldn’t be totally wrong

However if I said – “I wouldn’t do this normally” – it doesn’t really refer to an action but to a state, is it?

by alynne4307 on Feb 21, 2012 4:33 PM GMT up reply actions

Well, learning with native speakers would give you bad results

so you shouldn’t “learn” whenever I try to explain grammar rules. However – as I offered Trooly here who wants to learn German to practise with me – I can precisely tell you what’s wrong and what’s not …

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 4:14 PM GMT up reply actions

Isn't "langsamerweise" a weird example.

Couldn’t you also just use “langsam”? German is slightly weird in that there are some times where the logically correct phrasing isn’t grammatically correct, or there are several equal ways of saying the same thing. English is bad at that, I know. I’m sure it’s due to my lack of experience with it, but it seems like there are fewer fine distinctions in German synonyms compared to English.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Feb 21, 2012 4:06 PM GMT up reply actions

That's why I wrote about the state and action difference

“Langsam” “slow” will typically refer to actions, and not states. But in the example sentence above – in English you have to use the adverb, in German you use the adverb too – but the adverb is the same as the adjective, just “langsam”. The “wise-adverb” – langsamerweise – would be wrong

I think German syntax is a lot more difficult than English, because German is closer to Latin than English is, and Latin has a horrible syntax (I’m inclined to say no syntax rules at all). However in most cases if you follow the English rule – Subject, Predicate, Object – will yield you correct results

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 4:17 PM GMT up reply actions

English is definitely the better language to be non-proficient in.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!

by Maiev on Feb 21, 2012 4:31 PM GMT up reply actions

That's what I mean.

I know there are better ways of saying things, but I’ve forgotten the vocabulary. I know how to structure sentences, but I struggle to remember the word I’m looking for.

With the second sentence, would “…aber Wortschatz ist mein Problem.” be a better way of stating it?

by Kevin Kostka on Feb 21, 2012 4:35 PM GMT up reply actions

I think

Ugh

Not good. They basically just tried to talk about sex lives in the entire show to show how the mind of a married man actually works… but it wasn’t funny. Most of the time it came across more like a bunch of pedophiles (which is now what I liken Bob Saget to) talking about their sex lives. It didn’t make it as a show for very long… there is only so much of talking about seemingly underage girls that people could take.

He made science this amazing, interesting thing that seemed attainable. For that, I am always in his debt. I honestly don’t know what I would be doing if I didn’t get into science at a young age.

Maybe he appealed more to a certain age group of us?

I remember learning things from him and I loved singing the Bill Nye The Science Guy song. I’m in the group that watched him in the early 90’s though, along with Saved By The Bell and The Fresh Prince. I feel like most folks here were babies when those shows aired!

It's not so much BNTSG I'm criticising, it's the fact that he...

…used the show to to create a pre-eminent scientist persona, where the actor has become the character. BNTSG is still a great show for teaching kids science, but I’ve seen him spout some awfully stupid things in his scientist persona.

Haha.

It’s mostly when I think about how long 21 years seems. I know I’m young, it’s just some things, like thinking the y2k scare was 12 years ago. Another thing is when I see professional athletes who are 18, that makes almost anyone feel old. Last year in the NHL draft there was a kid born in 94, that just seems wrong to me.

by Kjell on Feb 23, 2012 9:57 PM GMT up reply actions

Well, in a week or so it will feel like ahile ago to me.

I think the reason it feels weird to me is that I never do anything for my birthday. I don’t think I have had a “birthday party” since I was 15. So it always surprises me when I think about how much time has passed.

For me

it is realizing that I am no longer college-aged. I really struggle with that one, because I had to take time off from school and then returned 2.5 years later. So when I got back to classes, I was still doing the things that a lot of kids that age did… but in my final year I was in classes with kids 5 years younger than me. Every so often I have one of those moments where I think I’m in the same peer group as college kids… but then they offer me a bud light and talk about some terrible music, and I realize I am not at all.

Maybe I was never a true teenager

in my teenage years, so when I left school and started studying, the only change in life I felt was being away from home. Sure, when you meet young teenagers while you’re attending university you notice how inexperienced and dreamy they are, and how they’re proud of their A-Levels as if they’ve conquered the world, as if they didn’t know how easy it was. But that never made me feel “old” in a negative way. It only made me chuckle how naive some schoolboys and -girls are sometimes ;)

But yeah, I’m also one of those people who never grow up, so, who knows

Funny

Because I was vitamin D deficient until last year when I had to take supplements. Maybe that is why my immune system is a wreck against basic colds? I seriously get bad head colds like 4-5 times a year. It’s stupid.

But then… I have lyme disease, so supposedly that cancels out whatever vitamin D does for the immune system. Eh… I read waaaaay too much WebMD. It’s a problem. I go through phases and then I forbid myself to read it for months, for fear I will start self-diagnosing and become a hypochondriac.

Why would there be a difference between Apoll and Adonis?

In Art history, I mean, not mythologically. The Apollo of Belvedere I’ve posted above is THE standout of the male body in classical Art while I can’t think of an Adonis figure that has an impact on Art history the way Apoll had.
