Hazard Watch: Winger Wants Premier League Move

Photo

So much for any hope* of Chelsea getting Eden Hazard to reinforce the team this window. The Belgian 21-year-old has described a move away from Lille before Tuesday's deadline as 'impossible', which sounds fairly definitive - he's not going anywhere until summer. What is good news is that Hazard has told French TV station Canal+ that his next destination will be England.

*However small it was.

Hazard has claimed that Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are on his radar for the summer, and that he wants to play for a top team without fear of only being a reserve player. What does this mean for the Blues' chances of landing him? I'd have to say that they're pretty high. Let's look at the competition and see how things stand with them.

  • Manchester City: Hazard would probably be an upgrade over the disappointing Samir Nasri, and City can certainly afford to pay Lille and Hazard the sort of money that his talent would warrant. However, there are several other problems that City will have to address - they have more obvious needs in the centre of defence than in the attack, will probably have to replace Carlos Tevez with the Argentinian essentially going on strike this season. There's also some doubt as to whether he'd manage to get playing time - you get the impression that Roberto Mancini's ideal front four is David Silva, Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli.
  • Manchester United: United have Ashley Young, Nani and Antonio Valencia. There's also plenty of evidence that they do not have any money - teams who have cash to spend do not tend to react to a central midfield crisis by coaxing a 37-year-old out of retirement during a transfer window.
  • Tottenham Hotspur: A team that doesn't really have a striker but has both Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon is not going to be a suitor for Hazard - unless Bale goes somewhere at the end of the season. Unlikely, but not impossible, although the relatively low wages would be an issue for Hazard.
  • Arsenal: The wild-card. There's an obvious fit here despite the emergence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a legitimate player. Hazard is comfortably better than Andrei Arshavin, Gervinho and Theo Walcott, and would be an immediate starter on a team that plays pretty football. The problem is money. Arsenal don't pay the sort of fees Hazard will command, and he'll get much higher wages elsewhere.

All of the above considered, and it sounds like Chelsea are in with a very strong shout to land Hazard this summer - they're the only team with money and a clear need. I can't believe I'm already getting my hopes up for the summer window, but there you go.

Yep we could get both

Question Graham, Tevez is still being payed by Shitty right?

They're withholding his wages at this point

He is appealing*.
*In one sense. Not in the other.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 7:51 PM GMT up reply actions

Gotcha

So, he’s still looking for a place to call Argentina. Any chance the Milans can take him of their hands?

by nsleepy3 on Jan 29, 2012 7:53 PM GMT up reply actions

Doesn't sound like it

Milan are trying to buy him for £25M, but City aren’t having any of that

by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 7:55 PM GMT up reply actions

Shocking, to me, that they wont accept that amount.

Maybe it shouldn’t be, but I can’t imagine someone going in for a higher offer, that Tevez would actually agree to terms with. Except, maybe PSG. I suppose he could get his geography mixed up again and end up in China or some crap.

by alynne4307 on Jan 29, 2012 9:18 PM GMT up reply actions

Would that be sensible?

Spending around 70m pounds on these two guys? If we get both then both would warrant a starting 11 spot and I can’t see how we can fit them and the guys we already have together. With McEachran and Mata and Sturridge up front somewhere, one should be enough, although yes it is far too early to tell.

We also need money to spend elsewhere.

by el chelsea fuerte on Jan 29, 2012 7:58 PM GMT up reply actions

Not necessarily sensible, but McEachran won't be starting in the front four

And a 4-2-3-1 with a front line of Hazard, Mata, Lucas Moura and then Sturridge at CF would be pants-wettingly lethal, although weak defensively

by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 8:00 PM GMT up reply actions

We could compensate by having two solid defenders in the midfield

Essien (if he comes back to full form) and Romeu would make it much less important that none of the front 4 can defend.

I think

AVB said Willian is not coming, but who knows what could happen in these last days.

by nsleepy3 on Jan 29, 2012 7:54 PM GMT up reply actions

He ruled him out for this window

But he seemed to have left the door open for a summer move.

by Dlewis on Jan 29, 2012 7:55 PM GMT up reply actions

No

he basicly said that Willian costs too much for the player he is and that he doesn’t really fit in his long term project.

“[Willian] is an interesting player but I don’t think we are going to progress with our interest. Because of work permit, because of price valuation and because the fact that our project next year is more important than the actual project at the moment, Not that Willian doesn’t have those characteristics for the future but we are betting a lot on what we can build on next year.”

by The Bison on Jan 29, 2012 7:59 PM GMT up reply actions

To be fair

He says “not that he doesn’t have those characteristics for the future”. I know it is probably wishful thinking on your part, since you’re not a fan of his, but this doesn’t suggest he isn’t an option in the summer. It simply states that because of fees and the work permit, he isnt an option worth pursuing at the moment.

The statement sounds more to me that they may be willing to gamble with the summer transfer window than gambling in this window, if they aren’t able to get an option at the price they desire in the next couple of days.

Hazard going to Arsenal..

No chance! Name me the last time Arsene has paid over 18 million pounds for a player… I’ll wait.

by The Bison on Jan 29, 2012 7:56 PM GMT reply actions

I believe we are in pole position when it comes to signing Hazard

- He will be a key player in our team
- He will alorn alot of bling bling
- Champions League
- His Belgian teammates (Courtois / Lukaku / De Bruyne) are all at Chelsea
- Being part of a new young and exciting team that will challange for trophies

C’mon guys help me think of reasons for Hazard to join us, so I can feel better.

by The Bison on Jan 29, 2012 8:03 PM GMT reply actions

Full quotes

During a discussion on his future on Canal Plus, Hazard stated that he was going

“to England”
but ruled out the possibility of him leaving before the end of the season:
“It’s impossible for me to leave in January. As I said, I will finish the season at Lille, [as ] we can still win a title.”

The Belgium international recently expressed his interest in joining Paris Saint-Germain but Hazard explained that he had decided instead to move away from Ligue 1.

“This is an important personal choice and a football that suits me,”

Hazard continued.

“I would rather go abroad, not even if the club PSG Capital is a great club. I want to play in a big club where I am sure to play.”

Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have all reportedly been tracking Hazard, who Lille are resigned to losing in the summer but not for anything less than 40 million euros.

I am quite hopeful

Although I wouldn’t rule City out they are a winger and deep lying playmaker away from being almost a perfect 11.

Great news I guess, but I really feel we need some type of creative winger reinforcement

this window. If Mata is injured/out of form, we don’t look threatening whatsoever.

Why would he want to go to Arsenal?

They haven’t won anything in 7 years and look further from winning a trophy now than they have at any time in those 7 years! They don’t look too likely to qualify for the CL this season and with the rise of spurs and city I think they will find it very hard to get back into the CL in the next few seasons. Add to that the fact that he won’t get big money at Arsenal and they won’t pay the required fee for him. The only possible attraction I can see for him at Arsenal is the fact that they are a selling club, he may look at them as a good place to develop for a couple of seasons before making his dream move to Madrid!

I doubt it he wouldn’t pay mata’s release clause that time when it was below the 23 million we payed for him so i really doubt he’ll pay 35 million for hazard

by Blue Till I Die!!! on Jan 29, 2012 8:59 PM GMT up reply actions

Yea i know that but i just have a hard time envisaging Wenger splashes that amount of cash on hazard

by Blue Till I Die!!! on Jan 29, 2012 9:13 PM GMT up reply actions

Yeah I know

this is my hopes getting up. Plus he likes Arsenal way more than Chelsea so :cP

Yea but will he still like you when your not in the champions league

by Blue Till I Die!!! on Jan 29, 2012 9:17 PM GMT up reply actions

Fair point but I think keeping mata(the player Wenger wouldn’t part with a few extra coins to get) free from injury is integral to chelsea keeping hold of that top 4 spot this season

Again true, i just feel chelsea are better equiped to snatch that last champions league spot than arsenal are this year.

Indeed

Arsenal have never paid more than what, 18 million pounds on one player?

I bet he will SUDDENLY break the bank for him. Mata was on his list as well but Arsene didnt want to pay the full price for him.

by The Bison on Jan 29, 2012 9:16 PM GMT up reply actions

I'd be stunned as well

I mean, it might happen, but it sure would be a surprise

by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 9:17 PM GMT up reply actions

The wages are also an issue.

A lot of Arsenal’s players are on relatively low wages. If they sign Hazard to big money, that changes their whole wage structure. Unless I’m overrating what he’d demand per week.

by Cablinasian on Jan 29, 2012 9:30 PM GMT up reply actions

Throw him 100,000 week wages and i’ll have him say torres is better than messi while keeping a straight face

The only club he truly loves is Real Madrid. He is a boyhood Real Madrid fan.

Oh that again?

You told me once Götze will move to Arsenal because he loves them. And now Hazard loves Arsenal, too. Everyone loves Arsenal – why did stupid Cesc and stupid Nasri move when they were at the place to be? ;)

by Maiev on Jan 30, 2012 2:20 PM GMT up reply actions

I could see him maybe doing so

since he’s been desired there for awhile, and because Wenger got such shit this past summer for not reinforcing the squad in a time of need. You guys have pulled yourselves back up again, so it isn’t as desperate, but Wenger could be in for keeping the fans a little happier, especially if they are planning on offloading anyone else that could help make up for the fee.

My hope is that Chelsea could work out some sale this window, with a loan to Lille for the remainder of the year… if this guy is really on the top of our list for what AVB and crew want to do next year.

…shoring up the rest of the squad.

And a replacement for Mertesacker

And maybe a backup/eventual replacement for RvP.

by deg0ey on Jan 29, 2012 9:51 PM GMT up reply actions

Mertesacker isn't first choice

he’s third and is a good defender in spite of his slowness. We need a striker and a midfielder(maybe it depends on how many leave in the summer) we will probably need a goal keeper too if Fabianski leaves in the summer which seems likely.

Arsenal’s problem, in my opinion(which is more than likely wrong), is that they can score goals no problem its really just keeping them out at the other thats been the problem for the last number of seasons

by Blue Till I Die!!! on Jan 29, 2012 9:54 PM GMT up reply actions

Well this season it's not as big a problem as it might seem

Remember we conceded 8 in one game, a freak occurance by all accounts, and have played much of this season without recognized fullbacks.

Our problem recently has been not getting enough goals. In fact today was the first time in several that we scored more than two in a match the only other time recently was against swans where we scored 2 and they scored 3. Not having fullbacks and the inability to rotate the squad has hurt us a lot (along with Gervinho being away.)

Our set piece defending has greatly improved this season from last. This was always going to be a transition season with so many coming in and important player(s) leaving.

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 29, 2012 10:00 PM GMT up reply actions

You guys have serious issues elsewhere, so unless you're going to...

…break the bank, Hazard would be your one signing of the summer.

Author and Official Fernando Torres Apologist for We Ain't Got No History!

by Kevin Kostka on Jan 29, 2012 9:51 PM GMT up reply actions

Arsenal need two attacking players in all likliehood.

Arshavin is shit now, and you can’t know about RVP’s health/if he’ll stay.

Add in Wilshere being injured again and again and midfield cover seems likely, especially as we get Yossi back I believe.

Then throw in a GK and even if you can get all those players on the cheap minus Hazard, that’s still probably 60-70m. I don’t know if I see Arsene spending that.

by Culain on Jan 30, 2012 1:22 AM GMT up reply actions

Wilshere has been injured once and has had a set back

He played 50 something games last year for club and country he’s not injury prone.
We should buy another striker but I don’t think an Ashavin replacement is immediately necessary because we have The Ox and Gervinho who can play regularly in the first team. We should also have Joel Campbell (who we bought in the summer) if we can get him a work permit and we have Ryo Myiachi we have pacy wingers aplenty.

I’m fairly certain that if we don’t keep Benayoun you’re gonna sell him to someone else he was sent on loan because he was surplus to you guys. We could use a quality MF who can play in the attacking role but besides that we’d have; Jack Ramsey Song Arteta Frimpong Coquelin (Diaby if he’s ever fit) fighting for those spots not to mention Rosicky.

We need a left back because we have one good one Santos and one that can’t play more than 3 games in a row without getting injured Gibbs and that isn’t good.

And depending on how many of our back ups leave we should sign a keeper.

We signed 8 players over the summer not including Benayoun for less than 60m. I think we might be able to get a striker a midfielder and a keeper for less than that.

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 3:10 AM GMT up reply actions

I can see you needing Hazard

You have winger who all should be back up.Walcott,Gervinho, Ox and Ryo are all good back ups.
By the way I feel Ryo is going to be better then Ox I still don’t understand why you don’t use him more often. I feel Ox will be inconsistent like Walcott while Ryo will be quite consistent.

by Archit Arya on Jan 30, 2012 6:14 AM GMT up reply actions

This is a really weird season.

Just kind of biding our time til next year. I hope this summer is considerably less frustrating than last. Pastore. :(

by Cablinasian on Jan 29, 2012 9:31 PM GMT reply actions

Well look at it this way PSG are being brought to court over Pastore while Mata’s been, arguably, our player of the season

by Blue Till I Die!!! on Jan 29, 2012 9:33 PM GMT up reply actions

True

I was GUTTED when it turned out he was signing for PSG. I didn’t follow football for a week after that had happened.

by The Bison on Jan 29, 2012 9:37 PM GMT up reply actions

Don't rule arsenal out

Remember 2 important facts.

1. They are now owned by a billionaire.

2. Arsene may no longer be manager next season

So lets not be too smug about getting him. Although I would rule out Man city as they will be under the hammer for financial fair play by then.

Just what I quoted earlier and the following: "I want to play for a big club, but also one where I will play every week. I’ve played more than 100 games in Ligue 1 so I would prefer to go abroad. I want to discover something new and playing abroad is a conscious decision.

City can’t be ruled out. What if City decide to modify their attacking system next season? A bigger What If is the possibility of JM actually leaving Madrid for the City job. We’re well within where we need to be, and we can probably drop another £70M before next season and be fine.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 30, 2012 3:35 AM GMT up reply actions

£78M in debt is fine?

I read an article about top clubs quoting 1.5 billion in losses. Where Chelsea was supposedly £78M in debt and City was £100M+. With the new rules, we’d not be in line with the whole revenue=expense thing. We’d be in the hole.

by M I S O on Jan 30, 2012 3:40 AM GMT up reply actions

Yeah, those articles don't have any real understanding of the FFP rules

Most of that debt is able to be ignored under FFP rules – I think we’re actually around break even right now. We can be at -£40M and be fine.

Basically, the journalists haven’t read the rules.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 30, 2012 3:45 AM GMT up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong,

But isn’t Stephen planning to do a write-up on the details and particulars of FPP? I feel like I heard mention of that a couple weeks ago…I would be very interested to further my understanding of these seemingly complicated rules.

Wiki has a page up.

On the rules. From my understanding, you can have as much wages as the revenue +5m. Otherwise there will be various penalties, including banning from the CL. But there is like a grace period where you have to get your losses in check by 2016/18(?). Something like that.

But there are ways around the penalties depending on if your making investments into long term beneficial projects. Such as building a new stadium (sound familiar? lol) and other things, that I currently forgot.

by M I S O on Jan 30, 2012 4:30 AM GMT reply actions

I'm always hesitant to refer to a Wikipedia page...

Plus, I’m not a lawyer and don’t feel like sifting through the details of the actual rules. I would much rather wait for Stephen or Graham to do it….sorry guys, you’ve spoiled me.

by Joe DelGreco on Jan 30, 2012 4:34 AM GMT up reply actions

FPP is quite complicated

What I have read is that clubs need to cut their losses if you show a decline in your losses you are good and the owner can invest 35mil(not sure about the figure) into the club. And it’s not as bad as it looks.

by Archit Arya on Jan 30, 2012 6:20 AM GMT up reply actions

Also this:

Chelsea will be able to offer Champions League football, whereas Arsenal won’t be able to say that.

Probably. Anti-jinx * 1000

by FootieFromAfar on Jan 30, 2012 5:05 AM GMT via mobile reply actions

As exciting as this sounds...

Ill be honest and say i think that City have the best chance of purchasing Hazard for 2 reasons.
1. They look likely to win the Premiership (who doesn’t want to go to play for the best team in any country)
2. Wages- They can afford to pay him more the John Terry currently earns… which tells me that although we pay very well, we have a ceiling. If they offer Hazard £220K per week we will be out of the running immediately.

I personally would be happy to see Hazard, Willan and Moura come to Chelsea, i think Willan would be a good back up incase one of them gets injured. Maybe he will make it into the first team… who knows!
