Off-Topic Thread #1
One of the best parts about running a website that's grown to the size that We Ain't Got No History has managed is the community. We've gone from comments being question-and-answer threads to something rather resembling an actual conversation between Chelsea fans from all over the world, and that's fantastic. However, there's a side effect of that - y'all are not chatting so much that nearly every football thread is going off-topic.
In light of the fact that you lot are talking about pretty much everything these days, I figured that having an open chat thread would be helpful in providing a place for everyone to discuss movies/flirt/whatever everyone wants to do. I'm not going to be militant about policing football threads for off-topic stuff, but it's probably best to try to herd it all into one place just so the authors can keep track of people asking questions in the football posts.
So - off topic rules: Please no contentious issues (other sites ban political and religious discussion, and I think I'm going to do the same). Please play nicely, and anyone can start a new thread after we get to 500 comments or so. Cool?

Haha, still the first one. :(
Hoping to finish before HBO starts the 2nd season…I’d like to be ahead of the TV show by then.
damn is that a good show
would love too read the books

Never watched the show
But I devour the books. Was so excited for #5 this summer

I actually thought #5 was the best one
I really enjoyed his writing in it, much more so than I had the previous four

Is it acceptable to avoid them until he actually finishes the series?
I don’t want to end up reading an unfinished series. I know it’s good, but there’s a real chance that he’ll without finishing them.

Politeia and Symposion by Platon
always wanted to read them first-hand instead of secondary literature, but never really got into it, and the original translation by Schleiermacher is painful. Platon is really fascinating; I hope I’d be able to read it in Greek one time, though I do not have the hope currently I’d manage to learn Greek on that level
I’m seriously thinking about reading the newest novel by Umberto Eco
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
A Dance with Dragons GRR Martin
And making an attempt of classic literature with Odyssey by Homer. Second one is a lot harder to read than the first!

I'm not sure why I chose it.
Inferno wasn’t too bad, but it got reeeeally complicated after that. I have a copy with all of the things he is referring to listed in the back, but I got bored of trying to follow them all, so I gave up. I still intend to go back and finish it, though.
I find it amusing
Eco mentioned Dante so often that I got hand onto a translation too, but I gave up after a while. Italian literature will always remain a mystery to me … even Manzoni I found unreadable
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I am a terrible reader
and skip back and forth between books, so some of these have been “in progress” for years, others months or weeks:
- Soccernomics
- A Long Way Down
- Love is a Mixtape
- A Gate at the Stairs
- Birds of America
- The Brand Gap
- Homer’s Odyssey (the cat book, not the real thing… I had a blind cat and thought it would help… it didnt, because I think it is more of a life story than a story about having a blind cat)
To answer my own question
Invasion of the Body, by Nicolas Tilney. It’s about the history of surgery and is pretty darn gross.

Oh, and not because I shy away from blood… I watch all kinds of shoot ‘em up types… it’s the inside parts not being inside… gah! I am literally squirming right now.
I just got done with the *gulp*
Kitty Norville werewolf stories. Hilariously entertaining. I’m trying to read Infinite Jest to counteract, but i want more werewolf stories :(
My 5 favourite movies of all time
My 5 favourite movies of all time
1. The Godfather (i know its cliche and so many people think its the best movie ever, but theres reason for that)
2.The Dark Knight
3.The Big Lebowski
4.The good, the bad, and the ugly
5.The Sting
by blue_is_the_colour on Jan 29, 2012 7:17 PM GMT reply actions
This is very much something that depends on the mood for me
But the movie I’ve seen most often is Fight Club.
Wow, those are all kinda relatively sensible movies...
Mine would be:
A. Independence Day
2. Rent
D. Zombieland
%. Invictus
§. Top Gun
zombieland is awesome!
seen it literally over 20 times!
by blue_is_the_colour on Jan 29, 2012 7:29 PM GMT up reply actions
I've seen Independence over 15 times
just because of the amount of replays it had on TV over the years hehe
And I've just watched I Saw the Devil
Which is a Korean film and is just a little bit messed up!
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 29, 2012 9:10 PM GMT up reply actions
What a great movie though.
I just love that it’s not a chase after the bad guy for the whole movie, very interesting idea.
It is a great movie, and as I have had some time to think about it, the plot it is fantastic.
And I’m not the squeamish type but there are a couple of points in the movie that make me winch! The Koreans do revenge so well!
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 30, 2012 11:08 AM GMT up reply actions
There were so parts that would make anyone winch.
One of the most original movies I have ever seen though.
Top movies
in no particular order because it changes frequently. A good mix of cheese and not so cheese, I think.
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Swing Kids
- The Gladiator
- Wristcutters
- 12 Angry Men
I like some depressing-ish movies, I guess. Honorable mentions go to some funnier ones, like Billy Madison, Old School, The Big Lebowski, and a bunch of others I know I am forgetting.
It's my classic movie of choice
I am not cool enough to like old films that much, but that one is just great. I suppose it helped that we watched it in my law class in high school, but it is one of the best displays of tension in a film, and gives you a great glimpse at character development back when. It’s is also terribly neat that there is pretty much 2 sets for the entirety of the film… the room itself, and the bathroom (they show the court room in the beginning, but it isn’t really part of it).
Never heard of
Swing Kids and Wristcutters…. Off to the google!
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 29, 2012 10:13 PM GMT up reply actions
Swing Kids is older
but I was really in to swing music and culture at the time, and loved that film. It’s no masterpiece, but I’ve seen it, and yes, cried to it, about 12 times.
Wristcutters is more recent, and I reference it often, in regards to one of the major themes in the film (basically about not trying so hard). It takes a grim foundation and sort of does it justice in a really weird way, where someone could try to exploit suicide and glamorize it, or something weird like that. It’s actually more about living than suicide, though. Wow, this description doesn’t help make it sound less depressing!
Maybe not less depressing
But certainly intriguing. Will give them both a watch. Wristcutters sounds like a film I would enjoy
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 29, 2012 10:23 PM GMT up reply actions
Billy Madison!
Any time I watch that movie I end up reciting all the lines, word for word, as they say them.
It is so good for that...
Stop looking at me SWAN!
Oh, that one is my favorite. And at least once a month I end up singing the last line of that one tune… “do you have any more gum, more gum…?”
Probably not definitive...it keeps changing
In no order,
The Godfather
Pulp Fiction
Manhattan
The Big Lebowski
Miller’s Crossing
I love the sting but
1. The Princess Bride
2. Cast Away
3. Almost Famous
4. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
5. Casablanca
I was writing this as a reply in the "other" thread
Oscar movies…I’ve seen 3 of the 9:
Midnight in Paris – “ok”. Typical Woody Allen. Light, fun, etc. Not sure I’d consider a “best” of anything, but this may just be the Academy paying lip service to a true great of the industry. My only gripe with this one is that it made me dislike Michael Sheen (swoon) AND Rachel McAdams (drool).
Moneyball – enjoyable. Plus Oakland is right next door, so that was a fun angle. Brad Pitt is good and Jonah Hill is surprisingly excellent. It’s certainly one of the better sports movies I’ve seen…but the nerd in me didn’t think it went “deep” enough into the sport.
The Tree of Life – “art” film of the highest order. Haven’t seen anything like it since The Fountain (which I loved). This one I didn’t love as much, but it’s certainly spectacular.
I’m sure The Artist is going to win. Everybody’s favorite choice at the moment.
I haven’t seen as many movies this year as years previous…and nothing jumps out at me as truly the best. Here are some that I enjoyed the most, in no particular order:
Drive
Thor
Attack the Block
Mission Impossible (4?)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Harry Potter, Part 809238423
saw moneyball (loved it)
only one ive watched so far of the nominees. Drive was incredible though, MI4, Planet of the apes, Potter, Thor and attack the block were also good, havent seen tinkor tailor, but i love gary oldman, so im sure ill like it

But the positive I am very rarely pissed off.
While watching I match I am mostly jumping around. I find it difficult to see a Chelsea match even when my parent are around.
I don't know
didn’t see it, was hoping someone could let me know if Zdeno Chara split a puck in half with his slapshot.
I've gotten through the first season
Before my girlfriend made me start watching Spartacus and Glee. I’d like to get back to it though.
I'll probably end up buying the other seasons.
When this semester’s over. I like watching all the episodes back to back.
Was about to post the same thing
Going through the second season…intense show.
It's very good.
I don’t view it as some great work beyond all others, but it’s definitely one of the best I’ve seen.
I got the shotgun
You got the briefcase. All in the game tho right?
I'm hoping for the Patriots
Not because I like them, but because as an Eagles fan I really really really can’t take the Giants winning it again!
My money's on Brady (-3); and I love the Manning-face
But I’d love a meteor-strike or a SCUD missile up both teams’ collective asses.
Giants.
That front three of the Giants defence will feast on Brady.

I think three sacks... One for Pierre Paul, 1 for Tuck and 1 for Umenyiora.
Then a forced fumble by Kiwanuka!
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 29, 2012 9:03 PM GMT up reply actions
I hope they do
few things make me as happy as watching Brady finally suffer the sort of sacks he should have had seasons earlier… people didn’t give his offensive line the credit they deserved in years past. I put the true test of a great QB as someone that can do a pretty good job, even with a front line that has holes in it- year in and year out, at that.
I like Peyton,
shame about this last season. I’m also a huuuuuuuuuge Favre fan (despite his recent follies with girls and media). I’m used to disappointment, basically. Something a lot of the glory hunting, bandwagon Pats fans no truly nothing about. :)
Just really getting back into American Football

I watched the first episode of this season and really didn't like it.
I suppose I’ll have to give it another shot at some point.
With Parks and Rec, Community, and 30 Rock, I don’t really need The Office…
I need to watch the first two in that list
have heard nothing but good things.
Seasons 2 and 3 of Parks and Rec were excellent.
Approaching AD as my favorite comedy.
Season 1 is only six episodes and not very good. You have to bear through it.
That was the first time I watched
I remember being shocked when everyone spoke of how good it was, because I’d only seen the first couple of episodes.
Okay
I never got into Lost… I was lost watching Lost. I was a 24 fan, myself. As unrealistic as 24 was, it had nothing on Lost, to me. I had to suffer some assholes on the city bus talking about how unrealistic 24 was, and then going on about how awesome Lost was with its time machine shit.
Love Mad Men (and not just because everyone else began to love it), though it has had some bad episodes this last season… but they made up for it with one of the best episodes. I don’t have high hopes for this next season, however.
Law & Order SVU is my throwback for dramatic television. You can never go wrong with that one.
And then the funny shows… I miss Arrested Development, I love It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (though this last season wasn’t all that great), and The League is now up there on my list of favorites as well. I sometimes love to watch Archer, but often forget about it being on. I like 30 Rock, but ALWAYS forget to watch it. I only see reruns of it, these days.
And Seinfeld
duh, though it is only reruns, of course.
Surprised by the lack of love of Lost here..
Smokemonster = Lukaku
I absolutely adore LOST
And have re-watched the entire series twice since it ended.
But this seems like a hostile crowd, so I kept it to myself…
LOST just really upset me.
It’s ok if you like it for whatever crazy reason you want to torture yourself with nonsense over and over. :cP
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 10:21 PM GMT up reply actions
Same. It's amazing the little things you miss the first time around.
I’ve been waiting for a new TV series to captivate me like Lost did. There’s been only a few times I’ve shed tears in front of the TV as an adult.. one was watching John Terry and the subsequent Anelka PK miss.. and the other was the Lost finale

There's a fair shot that it gets a fourth season.
Needs ~100 episodes to syndicate, so they might spring for it.
Oh, I forget about that one
but it does have some really great moments.
I watched a few episodes of it
I really liked the Dungeous and Dragons episode.
But the best comedy show is still Friends.
Anybody watch How I Met Your Mother?
If you like Friends, I’m sure you’ll like HIMYM. There are some similarites between HIMYM and Friends.
I'm just getting into it.
Seen half a dozen episodes and really enjoying it. Thing is they’re not being shown chronologically, as far as I can tell.
The show has derailed a bit. The first few seasons were really good. But it's getting boring now...

Yeah I do like it
Friends and HIMYM have a lot of similarities. The last episode of HIMYM was amazing (or as Barney would say “Awesome”)

I just wanted to ask about translations in FanShots ...
I think I asked once but nobody noticed. The question was actually serious
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
If I find a link to another site
without writing anything on my own – that would be the topic of a FanShot – however when it’s non-English it wouldn’t make much sense posting that without leaving any comments; expecting people to run Google translation over it is somewhat rude … can I simply post a translation by myself in the box? That box seems somewhat little in size … and the FanShot gets very long by that
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
(and if it's getting long, a fanpost is cool too)
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 9:06 PM GMT up reply actions
If I got the SBN help section correctly
a Fanpost was intended for own contributions? Translation wouldn’t fit in that … and with the FanShot boxes it could look weird if I just post a long text in there. But if it’s OK, I do it later when I come across something interesting and can’t find a good link in English
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Well those are just guidelines
Feel free to use a fanpost for translations if you like

The way I see it working
If you’re in a thread and want to talk about something unrelated, you try to bring it over here. Like I said, i’m not going to nuke any off-topic stuff that’s elsewhere, but I think people know when they’re drifting off-topic so then can just head over here to do so or bring up new topics or whatnot.
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 9:00 PM GMT up reply actions
It wasn't bad
it had a lot of cheesy chick flick things about it from time to time, so the really funny stuff went under the radar. But it was better than lots give it credit for, you just had to really watch it. Apparently it is huge overseas in, like, Spain. Come to think of it, I believe a number of the Spanish NT mentioned watching it. Weird. But then, the Spanish NT also have some other things in common as far as pop culture goes, and some of them are not the best trends. What is with their fascination with Coldplay?! All of them!
I watch it like every day
Reruns always on tv and I even have a few episodes on my laptop.Somehow the episodes I have watched like about 5 times. That show always cheers you up.
Since y'all a nerding out over TV shows
I’m going to nerd out over video games: SKYRIM IS AMAZING.

How is it compared to the other Elder Scrolls games
especially Morrowind? I never really got into Oblivion because I think it’s much weaker than Morrowind
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
It reminds me of a better Morrowind
It’s got none of the copy-pasted stuff oblivion did, the bad guys are way cooler, the combat’s amazing…
Yeah, it’s awesome
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 9:35 PM GMT up reply actions
So for example you can't build an alchmutant and spam through the game?
One of the weakest points of Oblivion, imho. Well you don’t need to build an alchmut, but on hardest difficulty settings playing without alchemy was suicide. And once you’re in it … yeah that just makes it up.
Does it still have the construction set? I rarely get really into games without the option to mod it ;)
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I play a battlemage - alchemy helps but it's not required
And the construction set is either out already or will be soon. I have it for the xbox but I’ll be buying the computer version in a couple years so I can play all of those mods :)
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 9:39 PM GMT up reply actions
Loser?
How so?
Regarding Mods: I find it amusing that Oblivion was a much better game with Nehrim … I found the dialogue/NPC system in Oblivion a shame and I didn’t buy it at the release time but when Nehrim came out I bought it just so I could play Nehrim ;)

He stopped a penalty 2006!
and killed mighty Olli! I’d never forget that sh*tstorm :P hehe
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
No, not really
It’s a rough reference to those trash movies with machines and computers taking over the world – and that during a time where computer were practically “incompetent”, so to speak (Ever used a C64? Then you know what I mean). So the joke was about computers taking over the world as hilarious as ballpoint pens – being simple things
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
And on another note
I find it slightly disturbing that EA and Bioware seemingly wanna adopt elements of Skyrim in the next Dragon Age game
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
But they are so completely different games ...
Dragon Age is completely plot- and NPC-driven and the Elder Scrolls series is Open World and all about exploration. One is Xp-based, one is skill-based … now I’d really like to see how the skill system of the Elder Scrolls series would work out if you control a party with 3 companions ;). If I imagined wandering through the world to find an NPC and it becomes frustrating because I can’t find him – ha!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I'm not sure what EA meant
But the main critique of DA2 was the cookie cutter dungeons, which is a problem Skyrim fixed

(I say without having played DA2 after the reviews)
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 10:02 PM GMT up reply actions
Same here ...
but DA2 was actually a lot better than I expected after reading fans’ reactions and watching review videos. And there are even some minor aspects I liked more than in Origins, though on the whole of course Origin is pretty much the better game
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Off topic (in the off topic thread, hehe), but I swear you were two different people
but only because one comment has your old avatar, while the other doesnt.
Not necessarily Skyrim
because that was something not down to the incapability of the Bioware developers – they created very good dungeons in the DLCs and in DA1 – but down to the plan of EA releasing a game just one year after the first one
But I agree on one thing. Skyrim had the better graphics and the better engine, and better character customization. This is something EA should have a look at
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
5% food?!?!
that sounds like an awesome diet plan. I am currently at 5% actual sleep, 35% food and drink, 60% work and avoiding work on the Internet.
People have to remind me to eat or I don't
Then a day later I start getting crippling pains from lack of food
by Graham MacAree on Jan 29, 2012 10:00 PM GMT up reply actions
No kidding
I regularly eat over my computer, don’t take real lunch breaks. My macbook keyboard is sad looking. I need one of those covers (but I don’t want to pay for it and I want my company to buy it, seeing as this is their computer).
I do also eat sitting in front of my computer
I do also enjoy my alcohol there and the computer is a perfect place to get drunk and beaten badly by your online opponent if you happen to play online :P
Now seriously: I told you some weeks ago you could disassemble your keyboard, get your vacuum cleaner over it, and then assemble the keyboard again. I do it once every year ;) but be careful – get a layout of your keyboard before you pull off the keys!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
No no no
I will kill the computer if I try. I may know some Internet things and am a “tech” person at my company for that, but I do NOT know computers. Best save that for my IT guys. I am almost positive I could get them to reimburse me for the keyboard cover. I mean, it protects their investment in the long run :)
I'm sure you can't damage too much
that’s not a laptop keyboard, and I have no idea of apple products but this is how it could look like:

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Oh
I could.. .this is a macbook laptop. Taking it apart means accessing way too many important pieces.
So many parts
and important ones are showing! I’d spill food on those, too.
I had to disassemble my laptop recently to clean the fan...
…and it’s a horrible pain. I had to remove the optical drive, hard drive, keyboard, top case*, and the display just to get to the fan.

I almost disssemble my laptop every year
to upgrade memory and / or the hard disk. So disassembling is no issue for me … it’s part of the fun (including what happens afterward that in rare scenarios your system stops booting – haha!)
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I like food too much to do this
I get too busy to get food, but I never need reminding that I want it :)

Okay
about the extent of my gaming-ness is that I interviewed for a job at Harmonix and came pretty close to getting it (probably the best tech support job ever… you got paid to go to SXSW and play Rock Band with celebrities). I almost applied at Linden Labs, too (I was desperate for a job, but not desperate enough to open a Second Life account).
That, and original Mario Bro’s, Mortal Kombat, Cool Borders 3, GoldenEye, Tetris… crap like that :) I did used to watch my brothers play Metal Gear and and things like that. Some of those were like movies, more than games.
That's my next purchase. I remember Arena. That started it all..
…and was a DOS based game. Early 90s. Good lord I’m old.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Exactly - that's why it didn't work against people that were good
Because good people generally go for the rush. I’m not quick or organised enough to do that :-(

And you can't buy it again?
OK I could imagine MS had no interest in selling this game now that AOE Online is out

Just kidding… every artist has a market, I suppose. Hehe!
I go through phases of liking terrible music
Not sure why, but I think there’s something to be gained from it
Everyone has guilty pleasures
unless you are a hipster. And you are right- there is something to be gained from it. Guilty pleasures are good for the soul, and let you appreciate the “deep” music all the more.
I went through a boy band phase when I was younger, I did and still like MxPx, and yes… I love me some Britney Spears. I really believe everyone has to like some stuff that they’d otherwise be embarrassed to mention… or even just things they wouldn’t ever put in their “favorites of all time”.
My favourite thing about "guilty pleasure" music is...
…a bit by Irish comedian Dara O’ Briain. The second half of this bit is a little racy, and unrelated, so be warned. It’s not too bad or anything, but the material could be offensive to some.

I have never heard someone refer to them as such. Even though they were, they are probably known as one of the best things to ever happen to music (like all of England pretty much adopted them). It is so weird to see that perception hasn’t made it everywhere :)

I love music so much
I sometimes get scared to talk about my favorites. Mostly because it is so subjective but feels so much more personal than films or whatever else to me. I suppose it defines me better than anything else. Oh noes! Can’t let you tell what kind of person I really am!
That said, some of my more favorite artists of all time:
- Jeff Buckley
- The Beach Boys
- Sigur Ros
- The Eagles (the old stuff, not their new craptastic stuff)
- Ryan Adams
- Sufjan Stevens
- Sin Fang (my favorite album of last year… liked it so much I barely bothered with anything else… Icelandic people are awesome and make awesome music and I want to make babies with the country as a whole)
I like lots of music… no particular genre too much (except maybe what people would call “Indie”).
... and Radiohead
how could I forget? I was reminded as my neighbor is currently playing Karma Police at max volume. Literally the only good song that has ever come from that apartment. That guy listens to some awful shit. I am pretty sure half of it is his own.. yikes!
Radiohead are amongst my top three most listened at the moment.

Oh...
a little post rock for you? Listen to Sigur Ros at all? Not all their stuff is of the relaxing variety, though. The first half of the ( ) album would be good for that. The second half get’s pretty intense. They are actually the loudest show I’ve ever been to… actually to the point where your eyes water. It’s crazy! And I’ve been to metal and lots of rock shows. Can take awhile to get past the not knowing “lyrics” thing, as well, being that half or more of their songs are in a fake language.
Lately I’m obsessed with this song from their ( ) album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwJfilYhX0A
It is SO good when you get to 6:35. Although, the studio version is a little more powerful. That album also serves as a perfect soundtrack to traveling the Ring Road up around the fjords and Snaefellsnes peninsula, in early Spring. I may or may not know that from experience.
My god, it's full of stars
The Sigur Ros / Mobb Deep mashup is pure gravy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVEwemk-TRU
I like
But then.. Mobb Deep is good, so that is to be expected.
It is!
And it was actually crafted to be so. Lots of great songs poured out of jam sessions, but that one was toiled over… or the guitar solo was, at least. Note for note. For some, that might take the romanticism out of it, and usually it would for me too, but somehow, I find it terribly interesting how they chose the notes they did, and what feelings they wanted to cajole from their listeners with them. Psycho-acoustics= awesome topic that I wish I understood better. Those that are mathematically inclined could probably do well with it.. unless they are not artistically inclined as well.
Depends on the day..
..though my son got me hooked on Hollywood Undead so I listen to a lot of them, Sick Puppies. I’ve also been listening to the score to The Social Network and Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – because the stuff that Trent Reznor does for those to scores is amazing IMO.

I think there are some people who just "get" food, and don't follow recipes.
I’m not trained at all, unless you count a lifetime of watching cooking shows, but I can’t understand why some people struggle with cooking. It just comes naturally to me. Most chefs and serious food people I’ve met have at least some understanding of why you use certain techniques at certain times and what’s happening on a deeper level. That understanding has helped me a lot recently, since my mother was diagnosed with coeliac disease just over a year ago. [Though I don’t have the gene for it.] When I actually thought about it, there are very few things where the gluten in wheat flour is essential and irreplaceable. As a result, I’ve been able to convert every dish we make to be gluten-free, except bread, which is essentially possible only due to gluten. I even made a lasagne alla bolognese once with the fresh green pasta and all. That’s my favourite part of cooking, being able to make people happy, especially if you can give them something they thought they could never have again. [As an aside, a GF restaurant that serves comfort food rather than the standard health-nut GF food would immediately have a huge legion of customers. : ) ]

Actually there are a lot more Gluten free bread out there than you think..
…plus I know that Bob’s Red Mill has gluten free bread mixes. Other than that it’s really easy to go gluten free – well not has hard as it used to be. When I had my restaurant — most of my offerings were gluten free – or could be made that way with ease. Same with Vegan/Vegetarian. Always had a couple dishes on the menu for that as well. That set loved me for that, actual meals instead of a bowl of sauted veggys and the like

I know there are GF breads, but they're just not the same.
I, for one, am really glad I won the genetic lottery on this one.
I don’t get why more restaurants can’t figure out that it’s better for their business to accommodate people. If a person with special dietary needs can get a decent meal, they’ll let others like them know, and do wonders for the reputation.

That's my method
when trying something totally new to me, or that I am unsure about. Like cooking meat- I have 0 concept of how to properly cook some meats. There are a few things I know, but I get really nervous about killing a piece of meat, so I make a lot of “vegetarian” friendly dishes by default. Maybe that is also how my tastes have adapted to well-done. :)
Other stuff, well… I am no chef, but I am a damn good cook! I also lay claim to the world’s best potato salad and deviled eggs. Sure, those aren’t serious dishes, but I am everyone’s best friend for a picnic! It’s the mid-west training :)

Bread without wheat is just not right!
by ChelseaMariner on Jan 30, 2012 10:16 PM GMT up reply actions
I know. It's the ONE thing that doesn't work without wheat.
I’ve been able to make anything else, or at least a decent form of it, including pizza, fresh pasta, and other things that are seemingly impossible. Bread is a travesty.
I did have one that was actually pretty close once, but it wasn’t wholly gluten-free. There isn’t any wheat in the actual ingredients, but it’s a sourdough, and I think the starter has traces of wheat in it. It wasn’t suitable for my mother who has full-on coeliac disease, but it might be okay for you, if you’re just intolerant, and depending on your reaction. I know it’s not totally wheat-free, but it’s only a trace, and my mother knows some people with intolerance who can handle small amounts, so it might be worth trying. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s the closest I’ve ever had to wheat-based bread.
Here’s the link: http://samisbakery.com/our-products/breads/millet-sourdough-bread/#
If that doesn’t work, you may have some luck with this one. It might not be any better, and it might not be as good, but they do decent work, so I imagine it would be good too.

Lactose intolerance?
Or just a dislike of milk? Dairy is so bad for you, but sooooo good! Cheeeeese!
wheat intolerance isn't the same as lactose intolerance
and dairy is good for you in moderation

Right...
I was referring to ChelseaMariner suggesting he likes almost everything that doesnt taste like milk.
Dairy moderation is definitely meant on the lower end of things… it’s not really intended to be had after being a baby, and cheese clogs your digestive tract like pretty much nothing else. BUT I LOVE IT!!!! I eat cheese almost any chance I get. :)
I'm lactose-intolerant

Hey guys..
I would love to read some books on football…suggest some good ones !!!
I’ve heard about soccernomics and Inverting the Pyramid, never read any of them.
Fever Pitch is good, though it's about an Arsenal fan. Also..
…Long Range Goals isn’t half bad (story of how MLS got off the ground).

Oh… that rules that book out for me, though I generally like some of his other stuff. Mainly High Fidelity is like my life.
Yeah he is..
…..I don’t like Arsenal either but it’s a good read. Haven’t read it in a ages through.

Soccernomics… definitely not a story type… but has some interesting anecdotes to support some of their numbers and claims. In the second section it includes some tidbits on Anelka and Drogba to support something about relocation assistance.
While you all discuss games
All I play is this

SUPER MARIO BROS
Someone gave me a software via which I can play the video games on my laptop. And I am again hooked to this beautiful game.
Games apart from this I play: Fifa 12 and just started playing Football Manager and other video games such as Contra, adventure island and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I tried to play the arcade and strategy game But they are way too serious and deep for me.Although occasionally play them like in the summer break.
Why do you need extra software
to play games on your laptop? And strategy games are serious? Try Warcraft 3 and click on the units more than 5 times!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Laptop needs a software to run the video games
They are available in .nes roms and you need a software to run them. By serious I mean they require quite thinking and if I go in deep thinking I really cant sleep because my mind doesn’t stop thinking and I don’t like that.
Oh yeah video games
sorry I misread it. Everytime I read “game” I don’t think of video games, and when I read Video Games I always have computer game in my mind

Lucas Piazon wecolmed to the the first team by David Luiz!
Welcome to the first team @Lpiazon , enjoy the moment you deserve it!
Hopefully he will see some time from the bench
But there isn't a topic up for it yet,
So it would be off topic from the other posts :P

Thought I share that little joke with you ...
as many of you might not have watched the interviews after the DFB Cup last year. What happened was: Bayern played against Bochum in the DFB Cup last 16 and Arjen Robben received a yellow for diving in the penalty box. There was little to almost no contact, and he tripped some steps after he went down. After the match, he said in the interview when asked to comment on the yellow: “Yes that was stupid. I should have fallen sooner.”
Yeah I know it’s not he wanted to admit he was not as fine an actor as some Barca players actors are, and it’s a difficult foreign language for him, but nonetheless, that sentence had something :D

any rolling stones fans
my favourite band, even over the beatles. Dont get me wrong i love the beatles too death and i can respect the fact that they probably are the greatest band ever, but i like the rolling stones style of music more

GREATEST GAME EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD so I’m sure it’ll live up to that.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 5:36 PM GMT up reply actions
I did see that
They really built up the first match, too. Although, that one was decently entertaining, I imagine. Offside goals, misses, botched penalties….
Are you talking about ManU Arsenal?
Yeah it was alright. Lucky for you guys you don’t have a stupid Piers Morgan to embarrass your fans on TV in America.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 7:13 PM GMT up reply actions
Nah
our first match against ManU… with “the miss”? The game, for a neutral, I imagine was pretty interesting to watch. It was quite open, though we didn’t put away our chances.
No worries about embarrassments… we have assholes that send bullets to people via mail. Though Piers does suck. I am not sure we have any public fans, like him, though. All the pundits seem to hate Chelsea, haha.
Oh riiight that one...
Good stuff. Games hyped up like this one tend to fall a little flat.
Yeah I don’t think our fans have much of a record for death threats but Piers MORGAN!

Perhaps not most people, but I think a lot of people would consider those...
…among the top songs ever. I wouldn’t necessarily put them all in my top ten, but they’re songs I like, and pretty popular.

Not very diverse at all! :P
Mostly classic rock.
Trying to narrow something like this down to 10 seems highly impossible to me. I like too many things.
Here’s what I can tell ya…favorite band of all time: MUSE
Most played song in my iTunes library: Big Tymers – Still Fly
‘gator boots, with the pimped out Gucci suit
Ain’t got no job, but I stay sharp
Can’t pay my rent, cause all my money’s spent
But that’s OK, ‘cause I’m still fly
I haven't heard that song in ages
My goodness. Now that song is going to be stuck in my head.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 7:12 PM GMT up reply actions
MUSE
is great! Though I’ve not listened as much to their recent album. I was big on them when they came out with Absolution. I think I used them in a music class of mine where we played samples of political music. Aside from Arcade Fire or Metric, I think they might make some of the most political/social statements in my music collection… only they do it in a way that somehow eludes people. Nearly nobody in my class had thought of them as having a political stance on anything, which I found terribly weird. MUSE= sci-fi love songs and politics… smart music though. I feel smarter when I listen to some of their stuff.
Absolution is still their best
But each of their albums is slightly different and there’s been a clear evolution to their music over the years. Hell, the last part of their latest album was a rock symphony!
I think of them as a rock symphony
for the most part. I once tried to give them a genre and couldn’t. It ended up being a list of about 7 different genres. Something like alternative post-rock-opera blah blah blah. They craft some very intricate songs. Although their recent little rise in fame (especially with Kate Hudson in the picture) was a little weird to me, in that my cousins who like all Top 40 and mostly urban stuff ended up going to their show. Kind of weird for my world of music to collide with theirs on that front (usually it’s because I’ll listen to something hip hop or have a pop crush on Rihanna).
I've gone off Muse a bit with the latest two albums
But they are without doubt the best band I’ve seen. I think they account for three of my top five gigs ever.
Were you at Reading this year when they played Origin from start to finish?
So good, probably knocked their Wembley gig from my number one spot.
If I had been, I wouldn't be writing this here comment
As I would’ve died and gone to heaven.
I’ve lived that concert multiple times vicariously through YT videos. I can only hope they release an official DVD of it, like they did for Wembley.
Best one I’ve ever been to was Glastonbury, ’04. Perfect confluence of just happening to be in the UK and them playing an iconic gig. The other times since (couple in San Fran, once in Davis, once in Sacramento) have just not compared…not they ever had a chance, really.
Saturday had The Streets and Rodrigo y Gabriela supporting
That’s the one I went to. We made sure to go to that one thinking it was going to be the first gig ever at the new stadium, only for George fucking Michael to booked ahead of them. Still, at least we were at the first ever sold-out gig at the new Wembley.
And of course we took a beach ball along so we could have a kickabout :D
Definitely in the top of my live performance list
Though I wish I’d seen them when they played at the Avalon here… by the time I got into them they were playing the BoA Pavillion and small college arenas. The Avalon show was supposed to be insanely good.
Well yes...
THEY are insanely good all the time… but the crowd or environment can sometimes be improved upon :) For instance, I was the only one in my section that wanted to actually move to their music at BoA. They wouldn’t even sway or anything. It was weird. I just dont get how someone can stand still to their music?
On the other hand, Radiohead was a total dance party at BoA, so you never know what you’re gonna get.
its kinda diverse
but just because theres some motown in there… at number 1 nonetheless! :)

#7
is definitely in my top list. But I’d struggle to put a top ten together. I’d probably have “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys somewhere, Jeff Buckley’s cover of “Hallelujah”. “Hotel California” would make my list. Probably something somewhere from Elvis, and MJ. Oh… it’s too hard. Too many good songs for me to prioritize.
good vibrations> god only knows
in my opinion anyway
by blue_is_the_colour on Jan 30, 2012 7:27 PM GMT up reply actions
It is really good
and most folks would choose that one first, but I have a very special affinity for God Only Knows. Even Paul McCartney labeled it as the best love song ever made. It may well be (though it gets stiff competition from Layla, for me… love me an unrequited love song).
No. No no no no no.
God Only Knows is one of the greatest songs ever written. Also I’d have Paint it Black, Since I’ve Been Loving You and Eleanor Rigby instead of Satisfaction, Stairway and A Day in the Life, while I’m nitpicking.
yeah well god only knows is a love song
good vibrations isnt, but personally i prefer good vibrations, but god only knows is also a beauty

You are after my own heart
with Eleanor Rigby… entirely underated but top Beatles song. That, and some of the Harrison-written numbers are up there for me.
Just thought of another song I’d add… soooo soooo good and not as well known as it should be. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d48n4ESFgE
The amount of good that song is doesn’t have words worthy of describing it.
On the topic of underrated/unknown masterpieces
(I Keep a) Close Watch. The original’s by John Cale from the Velvet Underground but I prefer this version.
I'll have to look it up
England doesnt wanna let me watch it.
I'll have to give that a shot
dunno why I didn’t think of that sooner!
I tried
and it turned into “My Country Tis of Thee”. Boo me.
Buckleys Hallelujah is my favorite song of all time.
Were I to try for a top 10…ugh
1. Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley
2. The Cold Part – Modest Mouse
3. Hey Jude – The Beatles
4. River Driver – Great Big Sea
5. Body of an American – The Pogues
6. March of Cambreadth – Heather Alexander
7. City of New Orleans – Johnny Cash
8. Picture Me Rollin – Tupac
9. Detlef Schrempf – Band of Horses
10. The Problem With Saints – Neil Gaiman
What can I say
most people I know in real life suck. I can only take the same people out drinking and shooting the shit so often. Plus, this is helping me avoid the insanity that is my office at the EOM.
What are you listening to right now?
My Pandora playlist is queued up with a bunch of 90’s alt rock. The Pumpkins will always have a special place in my Chi-town loving heart
Disarm
is probably my favorite from them. I clearly love all the really sad songs out there. But, my favorite band from that period is probably Alice in Chains. I actually cried in school when they mentioned on our morning announcements that Layne Staley was found dead. Soundgarden and STP were particularly good, as well (I was also totally bummed when I heard over the radio that Soundgarden had gone defunct… I feel like I was in 6th grade). I liked a lot of it though.. I mean, I can’t discount Pearl Jam (Black is my favorite from them) or Nirvana (Unplugged album is so good). I know I am missing some other great bands from that period.
I dunno about that
I still am looking at the other articles that get published. People are still chatting about those topics in the appropriate place. This is just a good place to talk nonsense and other things. It’ll be popular for a few days or so and then it will probably die down. No need to worry.
That would be quite amusing
That’ll mean we find OT chat to be more interesting than talking about Chelsea … hm … :D
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
On a completely different note, anyone following the latest developments re: Gary Speed
I can’t even begin to describe what seems to be going on, but it’s gone from just plain tragic to utterly bewildering and odd.
Very strange
how do they feel there is nothing suspicious about that? Not that I mean to bring on the inquisition for a family experiencing a massive tragedy, but it doesn’t sit well. Additionally, anytime someone threatens their life, it is worth telling some authority about it. You can just never be sure.
I am still curious how they feel it may have been accidental…
Does anyone know

I went to Ayiti!
Last year. I work for a non-profit for Haiti and we did a trip to visit a university we’d been donating to. Sadly, the trip didn’t produce the kind of marketing material we’d hoped to get to promote them (the sound on our video is terrible and the batteries kept dying in our camcorders), but there were other benefits and I met some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever come across.
I didn’t learn much Kreyol, and don’t remember much of it either, but it was really fascinating to see the similarities between French and English in the language, and also how amazingly smart the students are in the university. We helped them with practicing their English (some had only been learning for a few months and were quite good), but many of them knew French and some Spanish as well. We had one girl on the trip that was Haitian American, so she spoke Kreyol really well and did most of the communicating so I didn’t have to practice mine too much. I did, however, have to try to recall my little Spanish knowledge while in the Dominican and crossing the border (sort of terrifying, that experience). Had to be reminded of phrases by my Cuban/Argentinian-American friend. I do not commit languages to memory very well, apparently!
Also.. .you are in Florida, right?
The Tampa area, I think, has a pretty high Haitian population. As does Boston, so I should try to take up the lessons again, for the organization and speaking with the community here.
Orevwa!
My mother and father are from Haiti
The Tampa area does have a high Hatian population (HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE I LIVE!?) :cP. I don’t speak Creole myself but I intend on learning. I think it’s cool that you traveled to Haiti I want to go someday.
