The Chronicles of Charsenal: Episode 2
The Chronicles of Charsenal are back! Remember, this a fictitious account based on the video game Football Manager 2012. If you're not into that, or the thought of a Arsenal-Chelsea merger horrifies you, you don't have to read it. If you're just going leave negative comments, please don't. You're not going to change our minds, and you risk the laser.
In May 2011, a trio of billionaires was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. This is not their story[, but if someone wants to write that story, feel free.]
A few weeks later, eight envelopes were received by people throughout the world, postmark Brazil. They each contained a winning lottery ticket and a letter. A pair were received by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and freshly-appointed Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas. They have since decided to retire with immediate effect, and move with their families to a shared estate in Spain. The remaining six letters, addressed to six seemingly-unimportant bloggers, each contained a summons for them to save their clubs. The billionaires sent to prison were the owners of two of England's biggest football clubs, Chelsea and Arsenal. According to the letters they received, they had been chosen to lead an audacious project to unite their clubs and resurrect them from the ashes of their owners' arrest. They agreed. After all, what else were they going do, support Tottenham?
Due to their sudden lack of funding, both clubs were in danger of falling out of the Premier League. Therefore, as stated in the letters, the clubs were to be united to save their league standing. Going under the slightly-ungainly title of Charsenal, they bought the newly-opened stadium in Regent's Park, roughly halfway between their former stadia, which had been sold in the struggle to keep themselves afloat. The first action of the new board was to appoint a new manager. They turned to recently-retired 33-year-old England international midfielder Alexander Singer. Singer had struggled throughout his career with injury, and had been preparing to enter the world of management. Having begun his career at Arsenal, he moved on a controversial free transfer to Real Madrid at the age of 25. Alexander returned to England just twelve months later, after a torrid spell in Spain. He joined Chelsea for just £2.5 million, and rediscovered his form, continuing until being forced by injury to retire at the end of the 2010-11 season. As a player with successful spells at both clubs, and being well-liked by both sets of fans, combined with the club's somewhat-perilous financial position, Charsenal were willing to take the risk in hiring him.
With a transfer budget of just £1 million, and the large squad and backroom staff inherited in the merger, Singer's first task is to organise a clear out at Regent's Park. The new manager inherited no fewer than 87 first-team and reserve players in the move. The first casualty was fitness coach Matt Birnie, who had come over from Chelsea, and was deemed surplus to requirements. He is set to be followed out of Regent's Park in the coming weeks by a number of members of staff from the physio and scouting departments in an effort by the new manager to rein in the wage bill at the club. The manager is not looking for instant upheaval, but a slow process of paring down the staff to those who are deemed essential. Only then will he be able to bring anyone in.
In his first press conference as manager, Singer reiterated his desire for gradual change and evolution in process of forming the club in his image. When asked about the prospect of a rapid clear out, he replied, "I need to talk to the staff here, understand what they do and how they do it. Then we will see." When asked about his tactical philosophy and the style of football he intends to bring to the new club, he said, "We need to make sure we have a balanced approach. It is little use having a brilliant front-line if you can't defend a lead." Singer is clearly a manager who wants his players to remain grounded and have a good work ethic, saying, "History guarantees nothing, and we have a lot to prove. Good old-fashioned hard work is important." Despite what some might see as a less than optimistic demeanour, Singer couldn't stop smiling, calling his appointment "a wonderful feeling."
In the two weeks following his introduction, Singer led Charsenal in three friendly matches. The first was against a reserve side featuring several out-of-favour first team players who have now left the the club. The game finished 1-1, with a goal from Juan Mata for the first team, and the Reserves' goal from Conor Clifford, who also earned man of the match for his performance. In the second, away to Vitesse, Charsenal improved their form, winning 2-0, through goals from Man of the Match Daniel Sturridge and Oriol Romeu. Charsenal's form unfortunately dipped again against Oxford United.
On the transfer front, Singer's clear-out has begun, with Charsenal agreeing deals with Paris Saint-Germain to take Chu-Young Park. Salomon Kalou, and Andre Santos on loan for the season, paying all of their wages with the possibility of a future permanent transfer fees of £3 milion, £5 million, £4.5 million respectively. They have also agreed the £7 million transfer of Marouane Chamakh to Real Madrid, and the £3 million transfer to Bayern Munich for Alex, who will receive £3,600 per week from Charsenal until the end of the 2012-13 season to move. Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba have been loaned to Valencia and A.C. Milan for £1.9 million and £2 million, with a future fees of £5.75 million and £8 million agreed respectively.
Though it's early in his Charsenal career, things have started well for Singer. He's been able to make a decent impact on the bloated wage bill and squad. The team isn't quite performing to their capability yet, but things are seemingly looking up. We'll be following the progress of Charsenal and their new manager in future episodes.

Are we playing a 4-4-2 with advanced wingers?
RVP as a deep-lying forward and Torres as a poacher?
Right now, it's a 4-5-1/4-3-3.
Cech
Sagna DL JT Cole
Song
Ramires Lampard
Sturridge Mata
Van Persie
There are a few close ones with Arsenal players, but these are the most fit players right now in pre-season.

That was a reference to last season
he was only supposed to be out for 11 days he missed several months.
But I’m glad in FM world it’s nothing too serious. Is Jack ok? In real life he just had a setback. :c(

He's out, as he was, but players generally don't have setbacks in FM.

Can I post my kits here
so other Charsenal fans could discuss it here?
And – did you post anything on the shorts, too?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
If you want to, I have no problem.
The shorts are the same colour as the shirt, with white socks.

Yes.
Both clubs have white socks, so that’s easy, and the shirt ends up slightly Arsenal-y, so I went for the coloured shorts from Chelsea.

That would make things easier ...
Then I don’t need to do shorts myself and once I do a photomanipulation with Charsenal shirts I can only recolour the shorts, change the label of the manufacturer and leave everything else. That’s nice … so it’s only the shirt I have to worry about
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
The Charsenal kits so far
And again: The lighting makes colours slightly imprecise. I used warm light, not white light. And some areas are overshadowed; I didn’t adjust lighting for every new shot, so the light always comes from the same angle for all 3 shots. The model is a totally imperfect one; I didn’t to it myself, but just tweaked it a bit. Don’t worry if it looks strange. I did this more because of the design. I added stripes on the sides below the sleeves
Please add feedback; if the design was finalized I run a simulation again and try to fit it on a player.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
So long as you adjust the light so the blue isn't washed out, I like the design.
I think I’d prefer slightly thinner side stripes, though.

The blue is also the original blue from the crest
it only looks so pale because of the shadow … I realize it was a bad idea not to adjust the light anew for every new shot ;)
Thinner stripe: I think that would work. Though due to the bad shape of the model (and the lack of polygons) this would be hell lot of work again … hehehe
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I think changing from warm light will make the blue tones stand out.
It should bring it back to purple, rather than so red.

OK!
If I have the time to do a proper shirt model myself I just texture this design on the new model. The old model has serious problems and doesn’t run well in simulations at all. And with my own model and a more detailed polygon structure it will be easier to make the changes on the side stripes. Currently, it’s really a pain.
If I don’t have the time, or if I’m unable to do a proper shirt model, could we leave the stripes for now? Of course we just imagine them to be thinner. If this shirt is fit in a real photo (and for just that purpose this model was created) chances are you won’t see the stripes anyway
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
There's no big rush.
Take all the time you need. If you can’t do it, whatever you can do is fine.

I really really wan to do a good-looking photomanipulation
with the Charsenal kit – so you have pictures to use from if you do your next Charsenal articles ;)

It's for people who don't necessarily like having to play each game like in FIFA.
It’s pretty cool, I think, since I’m the kind of person who likes the decision-making aspects more than the playing aspects of football.

By the way does this Charsenal thing work on the demo.
I'm not sure.
It probably won’t, though.

I posted this the other day on the end of the last post, what do you think?
Regarding the kit, one quick point.
The purple with white sleeves seems to address the "it not looking like an Arsenal kit" problem, however, why are we focusing so much on that because it dose not look like any Chelsea kit ever. Why not a better use of blending the identities buy using the purple to create Charsnals new one. The colour is a combination in itself, lets have the one thing that represents the new, a kit to be proud of. Love the idea, as the Bristolians would say, "Makes I laugh"
by iamJD on Jan 26, 2012 5:01 PM GMT reply
On the kit
1) The “It doesn’t look like a Chelsea”-kit: I totally agree with you on that, and I also made several suggestions how to blend Chelsea with Arsenal kits, but Kevin is the lead kit designer and he decides how things are done ;)
2) For Combination’s sake: that’s why I added one blue and one red stripe (original colours) on the side under the sleeves. Chelsea kits had (white or red stripes) stripes, but sticking with the white sleeves format I can hardly see where to fit them. It would be very difficult
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
With the kit, I tried as many different designs as I could, and none of them found the...
…right balance of Arsenal-ness, Chelsea-ness, not looking like a rival’s kit, and simply looking good. Red and blue combos all ended up looking like Barcelona knock-off, without the white sleeves, there was nothing of Arsenal in the kit. That left a purple shirt with white sleeves. I couldn’t go too red, since it would drown out the Chelsea heritage, or too blue, since it would seem like a Chelsea kit with white sleeves. If I took an exact balance of the clubs’ colours, it came out looking like West Ham, but If I added too much blue to it, it came out looking like Tottenham’s away kit.
I know it’s not an ideal solution, but it’s the best I’ve found. I like the side stripe idea Maiev has added, and when you add the purple shorts, rather than white, the whole thing becomes more Chelsea-like. I’d say the shirt is slightly biased toward Arsenal, but the shorts are more Chelsea-oriented, so it balances out for the most part. Both clubs traditionally wear white socks, so that’s the easy part.

Love your writing style
You’ve made it very interesting. Anyway, with all the money you’ve been raising, what is your Transfer policy? Bargains, youth or big names? Personally, as far as I’m concerned, a youth policy is always the most interesting. Chelsea has one of the best young strikers already in LUKAKU and Arsenal has the best midfield with Ramsey and Wilshere. You just need to hook down defenders, although Kalas and Bruma are worth a look when they return from loan (are you gonna to play that long?)

Thank you!
Transfer-wise, I haven’t started thinking about it. I’m still trying to work out who’s worth keeping! I think I’ve got the first-team pretty close to sorted, but I’ve got loads of youth and reserve players who I’ll probably have to get rid of first. I also haven’t raised much money yet, most of the transfers are possible at the end of a loan. I think I’ve got about 14m raised, added to the 10m I started with. I’ll probably hang out to it and start buying in a year, when some of the older players will be cleared out. I have a bunch of players who are U-21s, and free for the squad, who are going to start filtering in soon, so I’m not sure where I’m going to need to buy. I’ll probably make a move for a player like Hazard eventually, but I’ll have to wait and see.
As for duration, I’m planning to play for as long as people read them. I’ll be doing roughly a month’s game time per week, posting either late Thursday or early Friday. I might do two months a week if they’re being enjoyed, whether as one two-month report or two one-month reports per week. I’ll probably stop at the end of the year, though, which will be either four or eight years. At that point, I’ll probably start a new fantasy project in FM13.

That all sounds very good
I would prefer 2 months in one post personally. To make the game harder and more interesting, may I suggest getting rid of everyone older than RVP including Terry (TV5 and DL will still b around) this should help with reducing squad size. After that I believe the squad should be good enough to make a deep run in the Champions league…

With the squad, I've basically got it down to 25 + U-21s.
Quite a few of the 25 aren’t going to be played a lot, but there’s no sense getting rid of them while I can leave some others out as U-21s The cuts I’ve made have been older players and players who just aren’t good enough. I imagine Lampard will be going sooner than later, and Terry will probably be phased out.

Was not knocking the efforts, just thought…
that using purple and white was enough of Chelsea and Arsenal. Then you had the chance to create something totally unique to Charsenal with a brand new kit design. Anyhow, look forward to the living the season vicariously through your fingers.
by iamJD on Jan 27, 2012 3:23 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
I know what you mean, but I figured the sleeves had to be there.
I could imagine the Arsenal fans wanting that design to stay above nearly anything else, were it a real merger. That design basically started with Arsenal, so ditching it felt wrong. It might be me, but when I think “Arsenal”, I think white sleeves before think red.
