Willian Wants To Join Blues; Shakhtar Willing To Lower Asking Price For Winger
Chelsea FC transfer target Willian has been making some noise about his desire to test himself in the Premier League, but now we're getting a clear indication that the Shakhtar Donetsk winger is specifically interested in playing for the Blues rather than anyone else in England. Why? Well, let's let him tell you himself...
Chelsea are known as one of the biggest and most successful clubs around. To play for them is a challenge I would accept and enjoy. If a deal doesn't go through, I'll understand. But I hope it happens. They have a culture of winning trophies and that excites me.
I have friends in the Brazil side who play for Chelsea, like David [Luiz] and Ramires. All they talk about is the thrill of being in a city like London and playing for a club like Chelsea. I've known David since we played together in the Brazil Under-20 side and he talks about what Villas-Boas is trying to build at Chelsea. He and Ramires feel he wants a core of young players who can mature and grow together but also be successful. David says how the coach takes a real interest in all his players, how he can adapt different cultures together and bring the best out of them.

In other words, that Brazilian contingent is starting to pay off. Even if you don't think David Luiz is a good enough defender to be playing for Chelsea*, he's a fantastic ambassador for the club, and it looks as though he's managed to convince a major transfer target to join the team. That doesn't mean the transfer will happen, of course - Chelsea and Shakhtar have yet to agree to a deal, but it's undeniably pretty awesome that we have a player who seems so popular amongst the Brazil national team.
*Which makes you wrong. Just so you know.
Oh, and if you're one of the many who are justifiably questioning whether Willian's worth that £29M release clause Shakhtar have attached to him, there's some interesting news on that front as well (from the same article):
We have no burning desire to sell the player, but in football some things are impossible to avoid.
If it weren't for our good relationship with Chelsea - and Willian does not hide his intention to test himself in one of the best clubs in the English Premier League - we would insist on the £29 million release clause written into the player's contract.
-Sergei Palkin, Shakhtar CEO.
In other words, Willian will cost Chelsea less - possibly far less - than the price quoted to other clubs, and Shakhtar are willing to facilitate his switch to England because he really wants to play for us. I know there are many of you against this transfer, so this isn't great news for you lot, but it really does sound like this deal's going to get done before the transfer window closes.
PS: If you really like us, Shakhtar, you'll give us Darijo Srna on loan. Pretty please?

Plus it makes other kids want to join them
like Willian did when he was 19. Champions League football definitely helps, too.
Shaktar have been brilliant at bringing...
through Brazilian talent over the years.

With the assumption that he's going to join
How do you guys think we’re going to play? Do we just stick him to the wings and let Mata be the new AM (which will mean even more moaning for Lampard)? Switch to 4-2-3-1 perhaps? Make Sturridge CF?

He can play on the wing or behind the strikers, so him and Mata can switch off. I think he’ll spend most of his time on the wing though.

Danny has played on the left and behind the striker before to good effect for England U21
Not exactly a close level to the premier league but I think freeing up Danny, Mata and Willian to switch positions would be very good. Mata and Danny already switch positions sort of and Danny can pretty much score from anywhere. Hopefully we’ll get a nice fluid attacking midfield trio and Torres wont have to drop deep or go wide to find the ball. We need to tighten up our defence though and hopefully we’’ll start working on our pressing game again.
I'd keep Danny on the right
I think he does nicely there enough, plus he can switch every once in a while.
Is this just shakhtar being diplomatic or do they really have a relationship with chels?
i vote for the first
Everybody stutters one way or the other

I didn't think it was possible to love David Luiz and Rambo more. I find it really interesting
what those two told Willian.
…[AVB] wants a core of young players who can mature and grow together but also be successful. David says how the coach takes a real interest in all his players, how he can adapt different cultures together and bring the best out of them.
That bit.
DL
is pretty much AVB’s biggest cheerleader. Seriously.. you can just tell Sideshow loves the guy.
Really exciting news
I like him more and more as that price drops.
David Luiz is awesome
He’s such a likeable person that I’m sure he could convince virtually any of the other young Brazilians that he’s played with that Chelsea is great. It could give us some form of leverage with other clubs if their player doesn’t really want to go anywhere else.
Even if he does...
They probably don’t really know him; they’re much more likely to be listening to David Luiz (who they’ve played with since the youth level)
I wasn't too keen on him,
but if we can get him at a decent price, which is very possible it now seems, then i’d be more than happy to take a chance on him. He’s ambitious and seems like he’s got a good attitude, gets my vote.

OT: Le Parisien is reporting that Alex will have a medical at PSG today (tomorrow if you're
in the States).
Aujourd’hui = today
Only 5M euros? Lame
I’ll take it, but lame.
We have pretty much no negotiating power
Since he demanded a transfer. The only way we could maybe get more money for him is if multiple clubs were into him and some sort of bidding war started.
5m is decent money IMO
Considering the fact that his contract is going to expire soon… Am not sure but I guess Its going to expire at End of this season.
Cheers,

I can't imagine a scenario in which he wouldn't

Well, some of the media doesnt seem to think so, and I didn't know if they were making stuff
up (again) or not.
Tim Ream just got one.
Willian has a considerably better resume at this point.

TBF
Ream has been capped for the US. I’d say the Brazil NT is probably a touch harder to get into. Dunno if they take that into account or anything, but I’d say it would be unfair for Willian to be denied but Tim Ream to be allowed. Ream hardly justified some of his caps, also. But then, they’re just giving work permits to all the US citizens (but me) these days… Robbie Rogers got one for Leeds.
But there is an exception for every rule
there at least is 1 (ONE) lawyer reading here … and 1000 more reading here silently!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Wiki says DL had four official caps at the time of his transfer.
Willian would probably be a shoo-in. I doubt a transfer of his price tag would be denied a permit.
I'm not a huge fan of the move - I'd prefer saving the money spent on Willian to make a run at Hazard
But it’s hopefully the start of a talented youth movement that includes some world-class pieces come summer. If Willian is coming cheaper due to an Abromovich connection, that can only make this buy more efficient.
I wonder if we're conceding that we need more of a "now" solution
and maybe figure we wont be able to outbid RM for Hazard this summer? With Willian and De Bruyne sounding like he is on his way, it would seem like our left wing troubles for some years to come could be covered.
Plus... Hazard is going to cost us at least 33m!
I dont mean anything, really
I’m too tired to say things that make sense. And you all are the benefactors of a rough day at the office.
Or we just nix the whole Hazard thing and put all our resources towards Gotze
Assuming Mario can be convinced to leave Dortmund – which may be more difficult than initially anticipated.
We lose one Brazilian
we get another. Nature abhors a vacuum.
Good replacement for Malouda
As I see him being a really good sub. Not a first choice winger.
Really? I think after he adjusts to the English league, he would instantly improve our front four.
~~~~~~Torres
Willian-Mata-Studge
would be a very awesome front four. Not to mention they could interchange positions.
yeah
i quite agree with u there valens,i just can imagine how Torres will improve when he gets adequate supply of passes and all manners of through balls. I guess Torres will turn out to be a Terrorist for all defense. Can’t wait anymore to see chelsea improve on every game.
I have a pretty limited imagination, yet even I can imagine just how much Torres will improve
(That is to say…not much at all!)
Hahahahahaha. Jokey jokes.
aint sin much of him, is he as good as hazard? would he fit in our team better than hazard will?
by CFCTOIDIE on Jan 27, 2012 10:50 AM GMT via mobile reply actions
No, he's not as good as Hazard, nor will he fit into the team better than Hazard will
However, he’s both cheaper and more available than Hazard – Lille would be screwed in their quest for the top three if they sold their best player
by Graham MacAree on Jan 27, 2012 3:21 PM GMT up reply actions
However, his purchase
Doesn’t preclude buying another winger in the summer and converting Sturridge to a full-time CF
I hope luiz and rambo
will continue to persuade willian to join them at chelsea,we really need a change and the change should start now. lucas moura should also be worked on to make him sign for chelsea at all cost,we want to win the champions league even if we are not considered a favourite to win it.
I'd rather have Douglas Costa
Not as fast as Willian but can play in almost any position from the midfield, is marvelous taking set pieces, and is also younger. Well, I guess I’ll just have to wait and root for no other team take notice of him.
