Compelling Cup Cornucopia - Your Wednesday League/King's/Italy Cup Open Thread
Talk amongst yourselves while watching potentially dramatic mid-week action in England, Spain, and Italy.
First up (2:45pm EST / 11:45am PST on FSC), we have the 2nd Leg of the League Cup semifinal between the Lolloping Beatles and the Stamping Herd of Mancs. Thanks to Anthony Gerrard's cousin, Liverpool hold a 1-0 lead...but based on their performance over the weekend, that may not mean much. City will probably be without the 21st Century Cantona whose 4-match suspension takes effect immediately. But maybe he can go hang out and compare notes with Luis Suarez in the stands.
At the same time in Italy (and on ESPN3), we have the most frustrating team outside of Chelsea in action against the Tinkerman's latest project. While I do love me some Ranieri (and he has picked up the pieces admirably), I want Napoli to succeed...if for nothing else then to provide a bit of distraction leading up our Champions League matchups with them. The Italians run their Cup single-elimination style, so a winner will have to be determined today.
Last but certainly not least (4pm EST / 1pm PST on ESPN3), we have another Jersey Shore "Clasico" in Spain, with Barca holding a 2-1 lead. That first leg was a poor excuse for "football" and I'm guessing we'll see more of the same. Hair pulling, broken nails, petulance, handbags, simulation, stamping, cheating...football's finest teams! Over/under on Pepe's red card is 45 minutes...and I say he does not make it out of the first half.

Mourinho will have to come out and attack if he wants to go through to the next round.
But if he does that, he will surely get humiliated yet again.
What a dilemma.
I don't know that I'd go that far
Barca are a pretty flawed team right now. There’s no reason to think a team as good as Real can’t score twice against that defense.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 7:01 PM GMT up reply actions
Flawed team? Sure. But they're always up and motivated against Real. They wouldn't lose
if RM attack them, especially at the Nou Camp.
Liverpool, and the Spanish giants
It’s obviously time for the beautiful game again. Hell, the whole match is ong and boring. A youtube clip with highlights do it, too!

Meh
You didn’t miss a whole lot in the last one after about 20 minutes. Diving, crying, stamping, and begging for yellows.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 7:31 PM GMT up reply actions
Aka, he missed the Clasico
Or is that not what everyone expects to see when they tune in?
by AmericanChelseaFans on Jan 25, 2012 7:37 PM GMT up reply actions
So the beautiful game is all about
diving, crying, stamping and begging for yellows? Ooooh … shock
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
hope city wins
just because liverpool despise me
Also Napoli, just because i like them
And Maadrid, just because i dislike barca
Who is everyone else supporting tonight?
by blue_is_the_colour on Jan 25, 2012 7:54 PM GMT reply actions
Meteor neutral Meteor or....
something crazy happens and both teams realize that we don’t really want to see diving and petulance and we see a real football match.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 25, 2012 7:57 PM GMT up reply actions
City aren't looking so hot right now
Although I like that they’re rolling with a 3-4-2-1
by Graham MacAree on Jan 25, 2012 7:56 PM GMT up reply actions
Sp basically
it’s not you like team X or team Y to win, but you want team Z or Team P to lose? A meteor would do it, too. Or a laser!
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Hoping for City so that Cardiff get into Europe
Napoli, of course.
And don’t really care about the last one besides the extra-curricular fireworks.
not damn well soon enough
but i think this weekend

Am I the only one who thinks some are making too much of the imaginary card waving thing?
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 25, 2012 8:12 PM GMT reply actions
I think it's no worse than players surrounding and shouting at the ref or
a manager arguing with the 4th official.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 25, 2012 8:15 PM GMT up reply actions
agreed
+ mancini was completely right, kompany shouldnt have been sent off and glen johnson should have

He made a good save
or so I read…none of the matches being telecast in my country…
by msreya on Jan 25, 2012 8:19 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions
btw, what is with that bullshit "away goal counts as two in extra time" rule?!
Who dreams up this crap?
Apparently so
I thought they were talking figuratively in yesterday’s match…but I think it may actually be a real thing.
Away goals are the first tiebreaker
So more or less. Each team scoring 1 in extra time would leave City up 2-1 on away goals.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 8:21 PM GMT up reply actions
What about in normal time???
counts as one only??
by msreya on Jan 25, 2012 8:21 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
They only count as 1 ever
Away goals are the first tiebreaker though
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 8:22 PM GMT up reply actions
yea i didnt like the call after seeing it live
hated it after the replay. it hit his foot for god’s sake
by marc.nicholls1 on Jan 25, 2012 8:27 PM GMT up reply actions
yeah did not look good at all
But I think Liverpool have been the better team.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 25, 2012 8:28 PM GMT up reply actions
They usually are for the first half hour
And they usually fade in the second half
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 8:34 PM GMT up reply actions
I don't think that's a pen at all.
Really lucky for Liverpool. Both of their goals in the tie have been pens.
I think Cardiff might actually have a decent chance against Liverpool in a one-off, considering they barely ever score.
How are you supposed
To jump and keep arms by your side.Dzeko probably deserved a penalty and Livepool don’t.
Oh dear Demba Ba
Of course it’s difficult to play well when you’re playing on mud
by Graham MacAree on Jan 25, 2012 8:37 PM GMT up reply actions
It's hard for me to really judge him as a prospect, since all I really have is youtube.
But it would be really nice to buy players before they cost 35-40M like Hazard or Lucas.
Glad they got Savic off
He’s been awful
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 8:49 PM GMT reply actions
He's one that could benefit from a loan
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 8:51 PM GMT up reply actions
He shouldn't be City's 3rd
Choice CB. If he leaves they are short on CBs. But he sure deserves a loan.
How is the City defense so slow? It's like I'm watching Chelsea of early season out there.
Dump & chase; ball over top – chase.
I feel like I've seen this "Barca get dominated by opponent for first 10-15 minutes"
the end of the story is Barca dominating for the final 75.
Johnson on for Karate Kid
What’s up in Catalonia?
by RamStamford on Jan 25, 2012 9:22 PM GMT via mobile reply actions
Barcelona score 2 in 4 mins.
And undo all the fantastic work one by Madrid in the opening 40 mins. Madrid just can’t catch a break versus Barca.
What a strike
Take a bow Son
I don’t like Alves but that was amazing

Just came to know that
Liverpool is going to the new Wembley for the first time…
While Chelsea have already gone there on more occasions(I forgot how many)…
And they say “weain’tgotnohistory”…
Hope I am not putting the blog into jeopardy…loserpool fans may come to steal the name now… :)

As much as I dislike Barca, I REAL(ly) hate Real.

Surely, one of these days we're going to get tired & bored of Barcelona, right?
(*we = media, in general)
Perfection is boring.

Also, I've forgotten how good Dani Alves is in the dark arts
Professor Snape must teach at Barcelona.
Granero is quite a talent
Hope he never goes to Liverpool.

Wow
Classy finish from Ronaldo and a brilliant pass from Ozil. Who has Shown his quality passing today.

TWO!!
Benzema! Tremendous touch over Puyol and a great finish.

That game would have been so much better
without Fabregas, Sanchez, Pepe, Pique, or Bisquets.

I can't believe how much he has changed
I almost don’t want to watch him anymore it’s tarnishing the memory.
