Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Kevin De Bruyne 'Likely To Join' By End Of Week

Stop me if you've heard this before. Belgian winger Kevin de Bruyne has long been linked to a move to Chelsea from Genk, and according to Belgian football expert John Chapman the deal is likely to get wrapped up before the end of the week:

I'm told De Bruyne likely to join Chelsea end of week & stay at Genk on loan til end season. Then next year, do a "Courtois". #cfc

In other words, Chelsea are planning on buying de Bruyne (for around £8M) this window, keeping him in the Jupiler League for the rest of the season, then converting him into one of the top young goalkeeping prospects in the world. Or maybe they're just going to loan him out overseas next year. It could go either way.

In terms of whether this is actually going to happen or not... well, Chelsea were at least as close as this last summer, where the negotiations with Genk went right up to the deadline. We've always known that an eventual deal was likely, and this one makes a good deal of sense, so if you're a big de Bruyne fan it's probably time to get your hopes up.

This obviously isn't a move that will strengthen the first team in the here and now (the fact that Chelsea are apparently planning to loan him out until the close of the 2012/13 season is testament to that) but de Bruyne is, in my opinion, every bit the prospect that Romelu Lukaku is - think of him as a replacement for Florent Malouda - and I'd be thrilled to add him to the crop.

There's still work to be done on the actual squad, however. It's all very well looking to build for the future, but Chelsea desperately need to put some daylight between themselves and 5th place. Missing out on the Champions League next season would be financially (and emotionally) traumatic, and I suspect the club have something up their sleeves to ensure that won't happen.

Edit: Genk have confirmed that they're expecting a deal to be worked out soon.

“and I suspect the club have something up their sleeves to ensure that won’t happen” – suspect or hope? I’m in the hope camp!

IF

This move brings the curtain down on the Hazard move, I will shoot myself. >.<

Don't worry mate.

De Bruyne is a player for the future (like Courtois). Hazard is a player who will be an automatic starter. De Bruyne is going to be loaned out next season, just like how it went with Courtois.

by The Bison on Jan 25, 2012 6:41 PM GMT up reply actions

I'm wondering if we've been specialising in Belgian talent because of Hazard.

It probably isn’t, but having a good portion of his future national team team-mates has to help. Hazard, Lukaku, Courtois, and De Bruyne should be a big part of the Belgian for the next decade. Like the fact that Torres helped get Mata here, it might help. Then again, it probably is just because nobody else is really looking in Belgium at the moment.

Liverpool used Suarez to get Coates

They’re probably using both of them to get Texeira

by Al Benson on Jan 26, 2012 4:56 AM GMT up reply actions

It is slightly spurious logic, but...

…if we could get the four playing together regularly, it’s going to better for them and for the national team. It seems like something they’d be in favour of if they even remotely care about the national team. It’s not going to make him come here by itself, but it gives us something important over our rivals for him, if the offers are close.

The same could said of Brazil and Spain! : )

Plus, we’re already on the hook for two of them, and are almost set on a third. A fourth wouldn’t add much moe risk!

You mean ...

like the fact Fernando Torres didn’t want to move to Chelsea initially because we didn’t have a Spanish contingent / Spanish speaking staff? Then clearly we might be targeting Brazilians? But that would bode us ill for attracting German talents … :P and our reputation in Germany between all other English clubs are not exactly good – the Ballack effect is still on us …

The Germans would probably go to Real, as it stands

I’d very much like for Ballack to give Götze a nice spiel about the wonders of Chelsea.

by Al Benson on Jan 26, 2012 10:18 AM GMT up reply actions

Real have a German contingent

and Real have always had a remarkable reputation here. Sometimes it seems only Real is considered a “real” opportunity to move abroad if moving to a “big club”. It’s weird, I know, and lacks any reasonable explanation. When Ballack signed for us, a shitstorm broke out, and another when Ballack was “fired”.

Only English club who can attract Germans is

Arsenal. As far as I recall Per Mertesacker is the only major German international in EPL.

Hazard only has a 33m buyout clause

even Arsenal could afford it!

I don't think Per is enough to convince Gotze

You even need Champions League football. And that’s where you would be lacking.

That would be like Spuds/'Arry complaining Mata

didn’t join Spuds at the beginning of this season. Dortmund certainly look like a team booking their CL ticket next season

Quote:

“Dirk Degraen is in London and the expectation is that it (the transfer of De Bruyne) will be finished this week,‘’ a Genk spokesman said. "The assumption is that Kevin de Bruyne will be transferred to Chelsea and then will finish the season (on loan) at Genk.’’

Hazard isn't really a left sided player

He’s played there for the majority of this season, but spent good chunks of last year on the right. He’s pretty capable of playing in either spot as well as just behind the striker.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 25, 2012 5:43 PM GMT up reply actions

Hazard is a right footed player.

He has started his career as an attacking midfielder and can play on either wing. The reason he is played on the left wing at Lille is because he can easily take shots with his favorite right foot.

I actually LOL'd at this!

The thought of a few years from now playing 4-2-3-1

With Ramires and Romeu in the pivot, and Mata, Hazard, and KDB constantly rotating behind a central striker is a very enticing one. Very enticing indeed.

by FootieFromAfar on Jan 25, 2012 6:41 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

I'm not sure Romeu's that suited to a double pivot

I’d rather have two good CMs who can play deep rather than a dedicated CDM. An Essien-Ramires partnership would work better (although Essien’s not going to be around in a few years), because it could actually exploit the tactical possibilities a double pivot gives

Sahin,if he really is out of favour at Madrid and not able to get into the first team would be pretty willing to move to Chelsea,I think.

by Avinash Mohan on Jan 25, 2012 7:23 PM GMT up reply actions

Rodwell would be good next to Ramires...

Or maybe Connor Clifford but I’m not sure how good he is.

by Famouscfc on Jan 25, 2012 10:07 PM GMT up reply actions

Either way, whatever combination of Essien, Ramires, and Romeu

Those three wingers moving around the pitch is orgasmical. They are all super creative, and can all also finish if the situation calls for it, and they can all play on either wing or centrally. It would be a nightmare and a half for any defense.

by FootieFromAfar on Jan 25, 2012 8:06 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

It'd also be very difficult for us to defend with

None of the front four would have any defensive value whatsoever

by Graham MacAree on Jan 25, 2012 8:11 PM GMT up reply actions

If we improve our pressing play...

We wont need to defend. If we can press constantly like our game against Bolton then we’d be unplayable. For some reason it only worked against one of the weakest teams in the league…

I think playing against a side that counters very efficiently (Sunderland, Man United) or a side that is likely to have a lot of chances against us (City) we could play Romeu and Essien or Romeu and Mikel. Give us a solid defence and leave all the attack to our attacking players.

Technically if our players are playing well our CMs wont need to join in too much.

A: Torres

B: Mata
C: Anelka
D: Kalou

F: Sturridge
G: Drogba

Yarrr...2.5-ish out of 7

I knew I had Kalou & Danny right.
I swapped Mata & Drogba, so I shall count that as a half point.

Congrats to ‘Iced O’ for being the only one to get Torres right.

Trust me.

He’s not doing a Courtois. He will become a starter over the summer for Chelsea. Just wait and see. Higher ceiling than Lukaku btw.

by M I S O on Jan 26, 2012 4:25 AM GMT reply actions

Incorrect

De Bruyne would be able to stand upright in a room where the ceiling is 6 feet from the floor. Lukaku would not.
