Report: Chelsea back in talks over Kevin De Bruyne

The force is strong with this one

By all accounts we were awfully close to signing Genk winger Kevin De Bruyne this past summer as the deadline neared. While a fee was never agreed, it seemed a mere formality that we would be re-engaging the Belgian club either in January or come next June. Reports out of Europe this morning suggest that we've indeed been in contact with the club while trying to hash out the details of a move for De Bruyne. For those not familiar, we profiled the young Belgian here last March.

De Bruyne is currently cup tied in the Champions League. The youngster would likely not factor into our plans this year anyway, so that may not be much of a concern. We were reportedly willing to loan the player back to Genk this past summer, but that became an issue when we were drawn into the same group as the Belgian champions. Now that Genk has had their fun in Europe it seems likely that they'd be more amenable to a sign and loan agreement.

I don't know much about this particular source, so I really can't comment on their general creditably. It's seemed pretty clear for a while now that De Bruyne is a guy Michael Emenalo loves. If we're still in on the player I'd just as soon get this deal done and dusted now as opposed to drawing it out even further. We'll keep you informed as we hear more...

Same

This kid has so much ability. And is a better passer than anyone in our team except for Mata.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 4:19 PM GMT up reply actions

Not exactly

But might be in the future.

by RamStamford on Jan 24, 2012 5:41 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Use arguments please

I doubt you have ever seen him play in a match. His allround passing game is better than every player we have in our squad.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:51 PM GMT up reply actions

No it isn't

David Luiz, for example, is a significantly better passer

by Graham MacAree on Jan 24, 2012 5:52 PM GMT up reply actions

wow just wow

You must be joking right? significantly better passer? That is such a ridiculous statement. If that were true he wouldn’t even be a central defender. Luiz is a ball playing defender with great technique and passing ability, but is no where near De Bruynes passing ability.

And I’ve never said ‘if you dont agree with me you’ve never watced him’. I just hate it when people talk shit about players they have never seen. Name me the games you’ve seen of De Bruyne than, Graham MacAree. Explain to me why his passing was not great compared to Luiz in the games you’ve seen.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:58 PM GMT up reply actions

Here's another one of those stats that might be worth a looksy

75% pass success rate. That’s what De Bruyne has averaged in the CL this year. Small sample size for sure, but it more or less backs up everything Graham and I have been telling you.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 6:02 PM GMT up reply actions

Using the CL stats are kind of unfair, since de Bruyne's support from his team was pretty minimal

Watching their games in the Juliper, I think de Bruyne’s a better passer than you do. But he’s nowhere near David Luiz and Mata, who are the top two passers on the team in terms of range and vision respectively.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 24, 2012 6:05 PM GMT up reply actions

I rate him as a fairly decent passer

He’s just not remotely comparable to Mata at all in terms of playing style. He’ll never be top class passer in all likelihood, his overall balance of quite a few skills is likely what will make him successful.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 6:11 PM GMT up reply actions

That doesn't tell ANYTHING.

De Bruyne plays for GENK. One of the worst sides that play in the CL They played against teams like Valencia, Leverkusen and us. Even Iniesta wouldn’t get a great pass success rate.

Defenders usually get a higher pass success rate, does that mean their passes are better? NO. De Bruyne is always involved in the attacking third where it is much harder to give a succesfull pass than just give a horizontal pass from defender to defender.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 6:06 PM GMT up reply actions

It tells us something

Compare him against the rest of his team. You’re vastly overstating your case here.

by Graham MacAree on Jan 24, 2012 6:10 PM GMT up reply actions

Lol

Have you ever seen David Luiz play?

by Graham MacAree on Jan 24, 2012 6:02 PM GMT up reply actions

While I am sure Graham has watched him

I think there are stats that probably support an argument just as much as watching. Besides, we watch with emotion and perception, but numbers are there to help us with anything we miss or let us cloud up.

If someone can get De Bruyne’s passing stats, I am sure we can help settle this discussion.

by alynne4307 on Jan 24, 2012 6:02 PM GMT up reply actions

There are few better than him passing wise

DL,Lamps,Raul,even King Assist Nando
My opinion,may be wrong
And believe me “Have you ever watched him play” is not the solution to hide your shortcomings
You may have judged him in our CL matches
He played out of his skin in those games, perhaps to gain a liking and to earn a few extra pounds on his cheque when he comes here

by RamStamford on Jan 24, 2012 6:16 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

What shortcomings?

That I am the only person on this board to have seen him play in a real match instead of a YouTube compilation? De Bruyne is always used as a playmaker (on the wing, behind the strikers or very deep) and is their most creative player. So people suggesting that he is not creative or technical are making ridiculous statements. Those 2 things are what De Bruyne is all about. The game where he played the Xabi Alonso role really showed how incredible his passing range is. I have never seen any of those players you’ve mentioned pass the way De Bruyne does regularly. I’m not talking about passing accuray. I’m talking about passing range and how he unlocks defenses. This is the type of player Nando would love to have, he cuts inside on the left and playes inch-perfect passes inside the full-back.

I’m not saying that he is world class, or would be an automatic starter (not at all). I’m saying that the kid is gifted and can be a great player in the future. AVB has also talked about him, even when he was still as Porto. He sees him as a new Enzo Scifo. Thats a massive compliment.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 6:30 PM GMT up reply actions

You're clearly the only one here that actually watches matches

They are so long and boring anyway. No chance Graham or I ever turn on anything but youtube clips. Youtube has highlights. That will tell you all you really need to know about anyone.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 6:39 PM GMT up reply actions   2 recs

Normalwise youtube clips only show highlights

and yes – highlights, not downlights … so chances are youtube clips make a player look much better than he is in real matches, so logic would require anyone watching youtube clips only will rate a player higher than watching matches … hm …

But, oddly enough, I thought of you guys here with all your fancy stats and analysis (what drew me here in the first place), and wondered if that talk would have had anything special I could impart on this crowd.

Have you read soccernomics yet?

I get the feeling you’d probably enjoy it

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 6:54 PM GMT up reply actions

I am in progress on it

I find it interesting, especially as I am not sure I agree with all of their reasonings just yet. I have a weird thought that I’d like to take their claim that football is not emotional and is really all about numbers, and sort of turn that inside out a little, and learn to use the numbers to support better marketing… aka, milking the emotional aspect of the game to get the fans what they really want out of it.

My problem is with reading- I have a terrible attention span (I usually read short story authors as I am known to switch between 3-4 books at a time). It is sitting in my suitcase right now from the last time I was traveling, but I was just thinking I need to get back to it again.

Still not sure about this kid!

I haven’t seen much of him so I’m not in a good position to judge but he didn’t do anything in the CL this year that really stood out for me!Mind you I don’t remember Hazard doing much of note in the CL either and he seems to be talked up by some on this site as if he is as good as Messi!

by conorjmartin on Jan 24, 2012 4:23 PM GMT reply actions

Indeed

8 million pound is nothing for a player that is more creative and technical than half our squad.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:07 PM GMT up reply actions

De Bruyne is a very direct player

He’s not really a creative, technical player at all. There is every chance his passing develops, but that is really what’s making him a low priced purchase at the moment. How do you get the idea that Willian is nothing but speed and dribbling but feel De Bruyne is a creative outlet?

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 5:15 PM GMT up reply actions

My view has been that they (De Bruyne and Willian) are pretty similar players

And both in the category of ‘better than what we’ve got but not as good as we should be aiming for’

Maybe I’m being unfair, because obviously I’ve never watched either of them play (That’s right, isn’t it Bison?)

by deg0ey on Jan 24, 2012 7:22 PM GMT up reply actions

I like the ones with ridiculous music playing in the background

like Kelly Clarkson and crap. What is with that? Why is it that every YT compilation must include weird music? It’s not enough to have copyright violation of all the clips, they have to add music to it, too?! ;)

Especially

in my country if the collecting society found out that was a video with music by a major label (or not, they don’t care much) they BLOCK that video here! A quarter Half of youtube is censored here … sniff! :D

Hmm, I don't quite understand what you mean here. Directness and creativity/technical

ability aren’t really mutually exclusive. You can be direct, and still be creative. Robben would be just one example of that.

So happy to read this news...

Just about 10 mins back I was watching some football show featuring KDB…and I wondered as to why has there been no news on this front.

So its here now…

No doubt he lacks certain skills but hey he is so young, He will develop gradually…
I would still like us to buy him now and keep at Genk till end of season.

Cheers,

by Rohi D on Jan 24, 2012 5:48 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

WTF? Not a technical or creative player?!

De Bruyne is known in Belgium for his passing ability, technique and vision. That is the reason we are interested in him. I’ve seen him play as an attacking midfielder, winger and even as a deeplying playmaker: Xabi Alonso role, because his long range passes are extremely accurat). He is very good in distributing balls all over the pitch. His passing range is even better than Mata. He also has a very powerfull right foot. He is one of Belgium’s most technical players and it’s absolutely ridiculous that you are saying that he is not!

The only thing De Bruyne lacks is physical strength and balance. He is easily outmuscled off the ball. What De Bruyne lacks in pace and power he makes up for his vision, technical ability and his passing game.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:49 PM GMT reply actions

I agree with you that KdB is creative and technical, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he's

better than Mata an co. He has ways to go, but that’s understandable as he’s only 20.

by Valens on Jan 25, 2012 7:34 AM GMT up reply actions

Is he really worth the price tag?

I know he was good versus us in the CL but he seems like a very high cost prospect. And I don’t think he has the upside of someone like Lukaku.

by Culain on Jan 24, 2012 5:51 PM GMT reply actions

8 million pounds

is NOTHING for a player like him. Willian, the most overrated brazilian currently playing in Europe, is 29 million pounds. And no one is even asking if HE IS REALLY WORTH THAT RIDICULOUS PRICE TAGE.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:52 PM GMT up reply actions

Yes they (we) are.

There was a discussion earlier about whether it’s worth going for Willian now in this window, or waiting until the summer for someone else. Some people are very keen on Willian, some people aren’t. There wouldn’t be hundreds of comments and discussion on the threads about him and our satisfaction in this transfer window if there weren’t dissenting opinions.

8m isn’t nothing. It’s four to six other prospects. It’s the difference between us getting a player like Hazard or not. The money Chelsea have to spend isn’t an infinite sum so 8 million for a player we’re going to immediately loan back may mean we can’t reach for someone else. He’s not a sure thing, he’s not going to start for us now, and is he necessarily a player we want at Chelsea for the next 10 years? It’s not always even about quality, but about fit, and about risk, and about who he may cost us.

by Culain on Jan 24, 2012 7:05 PM GMT up reply actions

The great thing about Willian is his versatility

If we bought him we could still buy Hazard (for example – at £33mil apparently ;) in the summer and Willian could still be used regularly.

by Famouscfc on Jan 24, 2012 9:10 PM GMT up reply actions

Versatility is great and all

But Zhirkov was versatile. If we can get a world class player who’s also versatile, that’s a really nice option to have. Mata is versatile, and he was on the voting for Fifa World XI and he cost less than Willian will.

So if Willian (and I’ve only seen him a handful of times) isn’t up to that standard, we shouldn’t be paying that money for him. We need to be going for the best young talent in the world that can make an immediate impact if we’re going to be paying over 20m.

I’d rather have a player who’s top 5 in the world at his position, or can grow to that level, than someone who will be a top 20 talent at one position, but can play two others at a high level too.

Again, not down on Willian, I just don’t want to be in a situation in 4 years where we’re looking at 13 other players and wishing we had one of them.

by Culain on Jan 24, 2012 10:35 PM GMT up reply actions

I understand what you mean.

I also don;t know about Willian to judge whether he is world class or if he has the potential to be world class. But I know we wont get any of the top five players in any positions this year without forking out a huge chunk of money. Obviously if Willian is worth less than £20 mil we shouldn’t bother paying any more. But I mostly trust our manager. If he think it’s worth paying then hopefully it’ll pay off. In the case of both Willian and De Bruyne they’re both young enough to keep their value.

by Famouscfc on Jan 24, 2012 10:43 PM GMT up reply actions

Willian certainly has world class potential

The only thing really in question at this point is how well he will handle the huge difference in competition level. He absolutely annihilates the UPL though and has had two excellent showings in the Champions League.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 10:52 PM GMT up reply actions

hahahaha

No one is going to be paying anywhere close to 29 million pounds for Willian.

by bsally on Jan 24, 2012 7:34 PM GMT up reply actions

that's his buy out clause

The club have said they’d move lower than that. £25mil at most

by Famouscfc on Jan 24, 2012 9:08 PM GMT up reply actions

If it points to one thing for certain

it is that we really seem interested in getting someone on the left wing (between him, and rumors of Willian, Lucas, Vargas, and Hazard). Or maybe this is just my wishful thinking that they really do intend to shift Mata central?

by alynne4307 on Jan 24, 2012 5:52 PM GMT reply actions

I wouldn't read too much into De Bruyne

Sounds like he’ll be loaned out immediately if we sign him, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him loaned out next season as well. He’s a long term guy, not one to help right away.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 24, 2012 5:56 PM GMT up reply actions

This is true

I figure he seems more a backup option for the more immediate need (which is what I gather from some of the other rumors). A little planning ahead, or an insurance plan, which I like. That is how managers should think about their purchases.

by alynne4307 on Jan 24, 2012 5:58 PM GMT up reply actions

Indeed

He is nowhere near a first team player. He is way too weak physically. And the step from Jupiler League to Premier League is MASSIVE.

by The Bison on Jan 24, 2012 5:58 PM GMT up reply actions

I don't want to loan him

He is better the Maloda and would be a better starter then Kalou.

by Archit Arya on Jan 24, 2012 5:58 PM GMT reply actions

A little loan time wouldn't be bad

It’s January in a tougher season for Chelsea and he’d be coming into a new, arguably, much harder league. Getting him adjusted before laying on the pressure is not a bad idea at all.

by alynne4307 on Jan 24, 2012 5:59 PM GMT up reply actions

Not he's not and no he wouldn't.

What you are doing to Kalouda is the same thing Arsenal fans have been doing to Arshavin. Both Kalou and Malouda are still good players, they are just being made into scapegoats for everything that goes wrong.

It would also probably be unfair to the kid to bring him in with that much expectation and responsibility.A loan would probably be for the best.

I am scared of what if ;Mata gets injured’. Although, I kinda like Malouda more then many of you the major reason being he was are only winger for a long time and as for Kalou I am not a big fan but he is okay as a backup. I really hate what Arsenal fans are doing to Arshavin I really like him and feel Wenger is at fault for playing him out of position and Arsenal fans should remember he was the major reason for their high point last season.

Did you see these quotes from football365?

John Cross, The Daily Mirror’s Arsenal correspondent, reports this morning:

‘Arsene Wenger reacted angrily after Arsenal fans turned on him following a third successive defeat. They chanted: "You don’t know what you’re doing" and booed after Wenger substituted Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (after his impressive full Premier League debut.

‘Gunners captain Robin van Persie also appeared to shout “no” as TV cameras panned on to his reaction after the substitution. The mood then turned even uglier when Oxlade-Chamberlain’s replacement Andrey Arshavin was at fault on Danny Welbeck’s winner.’

And here’s how Cross reported Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signing back in August: ‘Arsene Wenger finally got Arsenal’s chequebook out on Monday – but left some Gunners fans raging over who he hasn’t signed. Wenger tied up a £15million deal for talented Southampton teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. But fed-up Arsenal supporters want to know why he is prepared to spend big on a rookie but not on proven Premier League players.’

So basically, Wenger shouldn’t have signed Oxlade-Chamberlain but now he’s been proved correct and the lad has turned out to be quite handy, the knives are out after he took the rather ballsy decision to start the youngster in one of the biggest games of the season but took him off when the 18-year-old was cramping up.

by deg0ey on Jan 24, 2012 7:27 PM GMT up reply actions

I’d hate to see him at an inferior club in the same league I want to send him to Russia where at least he’ll be happy.

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 24, 2012 7:01 PM GMT up reply actions

While he didnt help much in defending that one goal

that isn’t really his position, and I think he got a little hung out to dry and was made to be blamed for that goal, when in reality it has been a shortcoming of Arsenal all season- no real defenders. At least he was there, which is more than can be said of some of the defenders.

Shame to see him have a spurt of success and to be limited to this now.

by alynne4307 on Jan 24, 2012 6:44 PM GMT up reply actions

The goal wasn't his fault many of the people who were supposeto be defending there made mistakes

but tracking back and defending is a short coming of Arshavin’s and that has been the case for as long as I can remember he doesn’t offer pace and his form is very inconsistent .

by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 24, 2012 6:47 PM GMT up reply actions

Wanted to say the exact same thing

Kalou and Malouda are very unfairly criticised sometimes. Sure, they’ve had a few bad games, but then so has everyone in the team. I still think Kalou can play a part for us if he gets a run in…switch it about with Sturridge and Mata every now and then against lesser opposition.

by Avinash Mohan on Jan 24, 2012 8:55 PM GMT up reply actions

Kalou and Malouda

may not perform miracles in our squad currently but they have much experience in playing in our team and are … well … perfectly adjusted to the league. All of this De Bruyne while being a great potential has not currently. He might become a better player with development but I doubt he could put it up with Kalou or Malouda currently

Galatasaray have confirmed they're in talks with Shaqiri and his club over a transfer

And he’s keen on a move to Turkey, apparently. What gives? Top young player to Turkey sorta confuses me.

Unlike De Bruyne!

Shaqiri would not need to be loaned out,he would be an automatic starter from day 1 in my opinion! Can’t believe we aren’t interested but in typical Chelsea fashion we will ignore him now while he is cheap and try get him for 3 times the price in a year or two!

Me too

Wanna know more about our Lalkovic too!
Has anyone written anything on him?

by RamStamford on Jan 24, 2012 8:02 PM GMT via mobile up reply actions

Lalkovic is pretty good! :D

I’d like to see something about him too. Islam Feruz scored twice tonight,he came on as a sub for Marko Mitrovic in the second half of a reserve game against Norwich,he looks very promising too. Good business getting him from Celtic!

I've said it before but my Belgian friend says he's more than capable (in fact, he may

even be better) of play in AM/CM. Apparently, he doesn’t play those positions for Genk because they have a lot of CMs. Anyways, his versatility would definitely come in useful. I’d love for us to get him this window. Don’t care if he’s cup tied.

Doubt he'd get in the team too much

But he looks a very good prospect. Hopefully would maintain his value in the future even if he isn;t good enough in 5 or 6 years.

I don't know guys..

I mean, I sure don’t distrust De Bruyne’s ability, but I can’t explain it, I somehow feel less convinced about a transfer target when I don’t hear about SIMULTANEOUS competing interest from other clubs. I mean, sure he’s talented, but why isn’t another club as actively after his capture as we are? Surely we aren’t the only club on the planet to require KdB’s type of player, are we? A little similar about Willian. Haven’t yet heard of another high stature club looking to bring him in as seriously as us. Sometimes, the lack of a competing major club makes me think the management’s too excited about particular attributes of the individual targeted to sufficiently focus on some small lurking flaw another team’s scout may have spotted..

Remember, these guys aren't really being looked at as long-term first-teamers.

You tend not to get transfer wars over players like that, since there are probably enough to go around. They’re now at the level where the mid-table teams would be looking at them as stars. If either was in contact with, say Newcastle, I’m sure you’d see similar teams going for them, but when one of the big teams goes in, the “lesser” teams tend to back off.

Exactly what chelsea needs

He is similar to Gerrard. Powerfull shoots with both legs. He is not a ‘tricky player’ like Willian and Hazard, But de Bruyne maybe fit to help Torres scoring as he tend to pass long ball. (of course if you still want Torres wearing blue shirt)

I think we need to wait for The Bison to chip in

Because he’s clearly the only person that has ever watched them play – we’re all just assuming they’re good because we’ve only seen youtube highlights.

by deg0ey on Jan 25, 2012 6:40 AM GMT up reply actions

I dont know alot about memes

so I think we should see what The Bison thinks first.

by The Rumor Hound on Jan 25, 2012 6:53 AM GMT up reply actions

I quite like memes...

But I’ve only seen youtube highlights, so maybe somebody with more experience can correct me.

A "watch the match vs. youtube match" meme

is there on the way … reading from the laser men’s reaction it won’t get me the laser, so I’d go for it …

Are you requesting one?

Well I was thinking of a “pile of rubbish” meme for the next time Kevin posts a Torres report to tease him … and I think my Hazard buyout clause meme with the wall wall wall is … evil enough on other WAGNH members … :P

Yes I know

a meme to tease Kevin! But of course I know this is somewhat not very nice to those members who said those things – like my Hazard meme. Maybe they’d take it with humour – if someone here comes up with a Maiev meme based on rubbish I wrote in my comments I’d definitively take it easily (it’ll be an honour!) – but we don’t know how others react.

Last time Pool fans told us it was enough to teach Lampard

how to become Steven Gerrard. Or get Gerrard himself. Or hire Rafa Benitez. Ancelotti told us we need to sell Drogba. I can never decide who’s right

Seems this transfer is moving very fast..

Genk director Dirk Degraen has reportedly flew into London to sort out a deal for Keivn De Bruyne’s with Chelsea.

Hope we get some good news by this weekend

Cheers,
