Chelsea FC loan roundup: 1/22/12

Photo

The winter break is over for most of our youngsters on loan so we'll actually have a pretty full report for you today. Matej Delac is the only player whose club is still on break, but they have a series of friendlies leading up to the resumption of their season in late February. Young Kenneth Omeruo has not yet officially joined ADO Den Haag as he finishes completing some paperwork. Word is that he will likely be granted his Dutch work permit on either Monday or Tuesday with an official announcement to follow. I guess you're all reading though to find out how the kids actually did, so here we go:

  • Matej Delac - Delac actually got a start for Ceske Budejovice against Jablonic. He played 45 relatively uneventful minutes and didn't allow a goal. While I didn't see this one I've been told he was fairly solid in his debut performance. With any luck he'll earn himself some playing time in real games with his work in friendlies so we'll keep a close eye on what he does.
  • Thibaut Courtois - Courtois kept another clean sheet on the weekend as Atletico blanked Real Sociedad 4-0. The big Belgian had a quiet day and only handled the ball a handful of times. It's nice to see he manages to keep his focus well when he's not constantly under pressure, but I'd prefer to see a few more tests to help him develop.
  • Rhys Taylor - Taylor was pretty good in a 1-0 loss to Port Vale. The lone goal in that match was from the penalty spot so their really isn't too much blame to place at Taylor's feet. From all reports he was very effective at handling crosses and corners throughout the game.

Star-divide

  • Sam Walker - Walker is the unquestioned number one at Yeovil now and started his first game for them on the weekend. Yeovil suffered a 3-2 defeat but Walker was supposedly pretty solid. It seems to be a pattern that Sam is hung out to dry by his defense far too often but at least the youngster is getting some starts.
  • Jeffrey Bruma - Bruma had a rough go of it as HSV got buried by Dortmund. Jeffrey picked up his second yellow of the season early and was fairly passive after the booking. He made a few good blocks and clearances but was pretty poor on the whole. He was probably still the best HSV defender today for whatever that is worth. Drawing Dortmund after a long layoff probably didn't do them any favors, Hertha Berlin next week ought to be a better game.
  • Tomas Kalas - Kalas was solid again as Vitesse returned to action. Vitesse lost 1-0 to NEC and looked fairly lethargic on the offensive end. All in all it was yet another really nice display from Kalas as he was forced to partner with a new center back this morning.
  • Patrick van Aanholt - PvA was named to the bench for this one but didn't actually participate. I'm not too worried about it as his first official day of training with Vitesse came in the middle of the week. I'd expect to see his debut next week, although they may opt to wait until after their Friday visit to powerhouse PSV Eindhoven.
  • Ulises Davila - Davila was again not involved in the fixture. He'll continue to get regular action with Jong Vitesse for now and hopefully he'll be ready if/when injuries give him a shot.
  • Ben Gordon - Killie got beaten 3-0, but Gordon seems to be one of the few Killie players in that contest who impressed. Ben covered a lot of ground, providing solid defense on the left while being a threat on the attack. That's about all you can ask from your fullbacks, hopefully his teammates will play a little better next week.
  • Gael Kakuta - I'm sure Gael was thrilled to get a start in the French Cup for Dijon after a wasted loan spell at Bolton. He made sure to make an impression early on, generally being the most dangerous player on the pitch in the first half and scoring a beautiful goal from a free kick. He still looked good in the second half but his lack of match fitness began to show. It was a very good game for Kakuta and I'm sure he's earned himself some more minutes on the pitch. Hopefully he'll get another chance as Dijon head to Lyon next weekend.
  • Josh McEachran - Josh started the game in the basket on the bench but came on for the final 30 minutes. He looked very good in his cameo, successfully completing 25 of his 26 passes and creating one very nice shooting opportunity with a nice layoff. He also released Scott Sinclair on a very nice run which didn't really lead to anything. Swansea have some quality in their midfield, but Josh was easily good enough to assure he's not going to be living in the Swansea basket.
  • That's it for this week, hopefully next week will mark the Vitesse debut for PvA. It's nice to have all of the youngsters back in action though so I have more than a few goalkeepers to watch.

Kalas seems to have impressed for the 1st half of the season at CB

…but there seems to be a growing feeling that he may be more suited to playing RB. Do you think the next time he is loaned out it could be as a right back, or do chelsea see him as predominantly centre half in the long term.? I suppose versatility is good.

    Hes very fast

So maybe Right Back would be best.

I wouldn't go out of my way to change positions on a loan.

As long as he’s getting on the pitch he’s developing at the moment. Where he ends up in the long term will probably be largely dependent on how he looks at CB as he moves up the ladder. I wouldn’t move him based solely on speed if he ends up being a solid center back.

Why change him to RB? He is doing amazing as a CB.

Just because he is very fast?! That doesn’t make sense. Thiago Silva has alot of pace as well, you don’t see him playing RB.

If he can play right back, I think he should

The world is low on quality RBs in a way that’s just not happening with CB. If Kalas can be an elite right back, we’d be crazy not to make him one

    This

Making Kalas into a player who can play RB and CB would be a huge benefit to the team. I believe he has the skills to play both like Ivanovic.

by Dlewis on Jan 23, 2012 6:56 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

    That's a good point

but when playing the ‘high line’ as we did earlier in the season, we were crying out for a centre back with pace, and if he’s been so good at CB then why rock the boat by changing his position. Having said that, given the current state of a RB options I would have no issues with him being the future, especially with other centre halves like Bruma coming through

Luiz has a lot of speed

    And that didn’t work.

by Dlewis on Jan 23, 2012 6:55 AM GMT via mobile up reply actions

I was gonna ask the same thing

is that just part of the loan deal that normally happens? Something like Chelsea agreeing to send him to Swans on loan, with them agreeing he can’t play against us?

If any of that makes sense lol

by dodgerboy03 on Jan 23, 2012 12:39 AM GMT up reply actions

    Correct..

…same in Spain, but what’s funny is that it’s built into their contracts — not sure about England. Though the Spanish press seem to think it’s another dirty trick the Mourinho pull. It’s really weird.

    I really wish he could

I’m pretty sure I’d start yelling at our midfielders for tackling him though, so maybe it’s for the best.

Kalas, McEachran, and Courtois will make it to Chelsea team. Chelsea team in 5 years

    Cesar—-Kalas——Chalobah—-Bertrand
    Ramires———-Romue———-McEachran
    Hazard——————Lukaku——————-Mata

HI I’M NEW HERE, SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC, BUT IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY CAHILL COULD BE PLAYED AT RIGHT BACK? GOD KNOWS BOSINGWA NEEDS A REST/HE’S BETTER ON THE BENCH

by AVB on Jan 23, 2012 8:57 AM GMT reply actions

    I doubt it

Although he has played at left back right back and as a DM in the past. I think Ivanovic will start at right back soon anyway.

    Welcome

We just recently got Mourinho, now we have AVB. This could be interesting.

Did you have some problems with your capslock key?

Or is there a reason I fail to grasp why you’re screaming?

    He's just very excited

Like the real AVB. Now all we’re missing is an Ancelotti,a Grant,a Vialli, etc etc

AVB Just looks better than avb or Avb, plus thats how he has it on his tracksuit… Cheers

HSV had a really bad day against BVB

but Bruma really looked the best defender of HSV in that game, I agree

    Err...why don't we try out

Piazon once on the left wing at least for 15-20 minutes??
I am dying to see him play for the senior team…
Maybe he won’t have much of an impact…but who knows??
If he steps up, it solves some problems of ours…

by msreya on Jan 23, 2012 2:57 PM GMT via mobile reply actions

    Poor idea IMO

He’s very good at the youth level and has held his own at the reserve level. I haven’t seen anything to convince me he’d be close to ready for the first team. 15-20 minutes isn’t going to give us any idea of his first team readiness, all it can do is convince the fans that he’s closer than he really is. Piazon is a nice prospect, he’s not close to ready for the Chelsea first team.

This is off topic but according to FM

Chelsea’s wonderkids are Sturridge, Kalas, Josh, Courtois, Delac, Kakuta, Chalobah, Ake and the player with the highest potential (future best player in the world) LUKAKU. Piazon and Romeu are suspiciously ignored…
