Sunday morning open thread
Manchester City hosting Tottenham. Arsenal hosting Manchester United. We have two really big games that will have major implications for Chelsea this morning. Here in the US the Arsenal game will actually be live on network tv. Needless to say it will be big for soccer coverage in the US. We also have Hamburg taking on Borussia Dortmund and Vitesse kicking off the second half of their campaign this morning as well as several other continental fixtures. Enjoy the games and feel free to leave any discussion here.

Kompany suspended
Kolo is in africa. They bought Savic this summer, he’s a pretty good young center back.

aguero getting a hat trick, with all 3 goals assisted by richards
as well as bale getting a hat trick, or something like that, will make my fantasy EPL team very happy:) i honestly hope that this game, is a draw, and arsenal win

I just can't pull for Arsenal today
With our struggles this year I’ll take all the help we can get. Ending the weekend with a 5 point cushion would be awfully nice.

as much as i wanna see arsenal get burnt
i wanna see Man U sad more, and i wanna see Robin Van persie also get a hat trick, fantasy prem and such

i may be gambling here
but i’m hoping for man city and arsenal to win. i think third place is a very realistic option for chelsea and i for one hate manchester united with a passion. i’d rather look up the table instead of down so that’s why i’d be fine with a 2 point gap separating chelsea from arsenal and a shrinking one between chelsea and the other top sides.
yeah thats what i was thinking
but 2 points is cutting it way too close, so if man city win and man u draw, i think that would be my favourite outcome

Seems just about half time HSV vs. Borussia
I mistook CET with London time and thought the match was about to start an hour later :P I’m so damn stupid

Its such an emotional roller coaster today
At first I have to support ManU today (believe me it sucks) and then I’m cheering ManCity, that too against Spurs, who are my second love

I've never had an issue with City
Never met a douchey City fan (I’m sure they are out there), like most of the players they’ve got. If we can’t win the title I’d be pretty happy to see City do it.

true, i’ve never met a city fan that i’ve hated. (i’ve never actually met one though hahahah.)
but man u fans…they have a superiority complex. :T
Me seem to be in the absolute minority
I don’t hate Manure. And I don’t hate Barca. Damn that sounds freakish :D

I believe it depends on how rival fans who you know behave...
Over here in India, You will get ManU fans in extreme abundance…Any tom dick and harry will be supporting ManU…they might not actually follow all their matches but will boast of doing so…and yeah the 19 titles

I'd say no on the few times we've seen it
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:11 PM GMT up reply actions
I dunno
tough call on the second part, but the initial deal seemed an accident.
I think the commentator is being a little too definitive based on Balotelli's character
he may have just been trying to get his balance.
I can't tell if that was intentional or not
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:11 PM GMT reply actions
I just can't see it
I real time it happened fast enough that I just can’t see him having time to decide to stamp. Looked bad, but I really don’t think the intent was there
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:13 PM GMT up reply actions
It's difficult to judge intent, so the call on the field was correct.
But it just seemed like the last step was unnaturally placed; if he’s trying to regain his balance, he’d try to flail it in front of him more than behind him.
Okay
I could live with a draw today in this match, so long as Arsenal loses.
or lost?
did that game happen already? I am not paying enough attention to the game times!
Thanks guys
I must remember to check that stuff before I make comments next time :)
It will be on network tv for you
Regular FOX
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:17 PM GMT up reply actions
I'd rather the draw in the other game too
Rooting for Arsenal to lose is pretty much accepting that we’re not good enough to compete for 2nd this season and I’m not ready to do that yet.
I don't doubt that we can still catch United even if they win
I’d just rather get the cushion behind us
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:18 PM GMT up reply actions
Yeah, you could be right
I’m still rooting for the draw as it basically just cancels out our poor game yesterday and leaves us with the rest of the season as it would have been :p
Had we won yesterday
I’d be cool with it, but given the next couple matches (excluding today), I think we face harder competition than Arsenal.
You are absolutely wrong
I like Arsenal,Spurs and City to some extent and only hate manure and have a dislike against Liverpool (mainlly after being taken over by Kenny)
I hate ManU the most
but I don’t want Arsenal inching closer to our top four spot, and I’d like to contend for 2nd or 3rd at this point.
How many mins stoppage?
the graphics on my tv look like 3/5/8 for all I know.
Wow
not even close! It looked sort of round, hahah. You’d never know I have 20/20 vision.
Even I do
He is quite and entertainment and even a good footballer but I want him as far away from Chelsea as possible.
Sort of?
He dove at the ball, missed it, and instead locked his legs around Balotelli’s. You won’t see many more clear penalties than that!
Scissor tackle in the box
Probably should have been a straight red
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:38 PM GMT up reply actions
Well, I guess it's time to witness history being made LIVE ON FOX
Is America ready for these bumbling idiots?
(And by bumbling idiots I mean the studio crew. And all he annoying players on ManUre and Arse.)
I believe ManU Chelsea will be live on Fox as well
Could be good because it is Superbowl Sunday here and people may tune in early. Let’s hope the good guys win and show the US sports fans because ManU has unfortunately done better to market themselves here and everyone assumes they should be ManU fans- blah. Chelsea can take over :).
That should certainly pull curtains on our chance of winning the Title :(
We now trail Man City by 13 points…
On a positive note..The third position is still within our reach (5points between us and Spurs)
Cheers,
Rohi D
No, he didn't
For a start, he missed.
But he was clearly falling at an angle that would make that the logical place to put your foot down.
I mean you're clearly wrong here, but keep repeating it
He was not straight up & down. His leg came down behind him, because that’s the way he was leaning/falling.
His leg went down at an angle after he got on his feet. I'm not agreeing that it was
deliberate but I can see why people would think that.
I don't see how you can say that was deliberate
It looked bad, but it happened so fast while he was trying to catch his balance.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:39 PM GMT up reply actions
Typical overreaction from Neville and Souness after the game
“If Howard Webb deems that isn’t a sending off, he shouldn’t be refereeing football matches never mind World Cup finals”
Neville is pretty worthless as an analyst
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:41 PM GMT up reply actions
Yeah, that quote was Souness...
Neville’s opinion was that that was an ‘unnatural angle’ to put his foot down. Despite the fact that it clearly wasn’t
It might be an unnatural angle for a 10 year old on his playstation
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:43 PM GMT up reply actions 1 recs
There seem to be a lot of people questioning 'how' Howard Webb didn't send him off if he saw that
But to be honest, I think you have to give him the benefit of the doubt there. I’m hoping that he writes about it in his post-match report so that the FA can’t retroactively suspend him because I think that would be VERY harsh.
I agree a bit with them
“he shouldn’t be refereeing football matches never mind World Cup finals"
That’s a part i agree with.
United Team
Lindegaard; Smalling, Jones, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Giggs, Nani; Welbeck, Rooney
No Rio thats bad for Arsenal
Right!
Blaszczykowski could also be spelled Blaschikowski for simplicity’s sake :D
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Because that's frame by frame
Not even close to actual speed. The reality is that there is probably no way he had time to intentionally stampwhen that wasn’t slowed down.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:54 PM GMT up reply actions
I'm leaning on your side, but I just dont like the way he stabbed backwards. If it was for
Balance, it didnt work cause he still fell. Only Balo really knows.
I just don't see how he could possibly have had the thought to stamp and actually done it in the time after he tripped.
There was literally not enough time for anyone to premeditate that, and I’m not really ready to give Mario Balotelli credit for having a much faster thought process than normal.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:59 PM GMT up reply actions
I think you're overlooking the possibility that Mario could've been out to hurt
a Spurs player before he even committed the foul. Like Paker could’ve fouled him before or something and he had made up his mind there to get revenge.
Not saying that’s what happened, but it’s a distinct possibility.
Because it isn't?
He clearly feels like he is falling backwards and puts his leg out to catch himself.
I really don’t see how people can think that IS deliberate.
Yeah, he clearly wasn't successful in his attempt to regain his balance
But it’s an instinct to at least try.
Makes sense
He stepped on Scott Parker’s head
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 4:01 PM GMT up reply actions
It doesn't look nearly as bad at full speed
Slowing it down to a quarter of actual speed makes it look as if he’s had time to think about it.
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 3:53 PM GMT up reply actions
Are you saying that "if he wanted to avoid a sending off, he should have succeeded"
Or that you can’t understand how someone could fail to regain their balance?
If he was stepping to regain his balance it would be safe to assume he was counting on landing on Parker's head
That sort of thing will cause you to fall
by Stephen Schmidt on Jan 22, 2012 4:00 PM GMT up reply actions
Are you saying
just because he didn’t succeed in regaining balance it was a deliberate act?
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I don't get your point
You say, if he was trying to regain balance he should have succeeded; because he didn’t succeed, it was a deliberate act, and because it was a deliberate act, he faked the fall afterwards, so ideally if by your own argument he faked the fall after the deliberate act he should have stomped onto Parker and NOT fake that fall because the fall afterwards was a sign to you he did not succeed and therefore the kick was intentional
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Don't you wanna flame on the "miss sometimes, miss often" discussion yesterday ;)

Uuuuhhh ... the game thread yesterday was kind of ugly
though I’d like to point out I was not involved in the ugly parts ;)
Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
Well roughly summarized ...
it was about 1) whether it was a horrible miss 2) whether the reaction “horrible miss!” was OK 3) if you could judge the “horribleness” of that miss on Torres’ past misses … you get the idea

is that Spurs went from nearly winning to conceding a last second penalty and losing.

Tor ilisar'thera'nal!
I've seen it said on a few other blogs for various sports
My guess is that it’s been around for a while.

Looks like the 'Men in Blazers' prediction of a boring 0-0 or 1-0 match will come true
Setting soccer back a further 5 years over here.
Looked like he just fancied a bit of a sit down
And thought he may as well try and get a penalty while he was down there

I imagine he'd also be the 'most available' of the three
As SAF seems to think (and I’d be inclined to agree) that he’s not as good as the others.
Having said that, it’s not like they’d actually ever sell him to us, so it’s a moot point anyway.

I've actually come to the conclusion that I don't give a [fun] who wins this game
Whatever the result, there are potential positives and potential negatives as far as Chelsea are concerned, and I can’t be bothered deciding which has the most net-positives at this point.
This is where I'm at as well
I’m just hoping for a good game. Which hasn’t really happened yet, although the 2nd half of ManC-Spurs is a tough one to follow.
Although it did follow an equally uninspiring first half
So there’s still hope for this game yet.
I also hope, for the FAs sake, that it becomes a good game; this isn’t going to inspire your typical US sports watcher, is it
I could really give a damn if we finish 2nd, 3rd, or 4th
If we’re not going to win the title (and it’s pretty doubtful now) I just want to assure we get in the CL. I’d love to see a nice littel cushion behind us open up so we can focus on catching Spurs and United, but I want that cushion first.

They play like shit for vast stretches of the game (did they even have a kick of the ball in the 2nd half until their goal?) and yet end up winning.
Thats the reason for my hatred for Manure

how arshavin could be expected to play well after that welcome i have no idea. arsenal fans fault, not wengers.
I gather that they werent trying to
not welcome Arshevin, as much as not welcome the idea of one of their best players in the match leave the field for seemingly no reason.
25m?
That’s a FORTUNE, to Wegner. He officially accepts.
Guys...
try not to be too jealous of our boys:
@juanmata10: Training camp with Chelsea in Mallorca. Always is good return to Spain… specially in days like this. Hugs!! ow.ly/i/qpVg
Hmm
forgot to link his link in that- http://ow.ly/i/qpVg
The FSC boys think Chelsea SHOULD buy Dempsey
With that endorsement and his goal against us, why are we waiting?!
They're definitely part of that core team
I get shit for it, but I like Feilhaber in midfield too… he gets a bit pissyfit sometimes so he should work on that temper since it didnt help his second half performance. But he is about as creative as our midfielders get. The jury is out on Jones for me… they guy is lucky enough to get called up because of his ban with his club, and then he gets to be captain of the side? A little German favortism? Ha. He’s known for his temper as well. He goes from doing really sloppy things to some good moves and I just can’t figure him out.
Brek Shea really didnt have that great a game- I dunno if it is just when I watch the US games and he is playing that he doesnt do well? Or does he actually just never do well for the national team and I am right that he is overrated and limited to MLS? I suppose we need to break in the young guys, but I wish we didnt break some of the momentum of the WC team. Cherundolo and Bocanegra aren’t getting any younger, so that backline is also a concern.
Feilhaber was ok. I don't want to see him starting though...
New guy Zusi was far more impressive than Brek “I look like a dumbass” Shea.
I’ve never liked Jones and was shocked that not only he got the call, that he was made captain after he got banned for 8 games in Germany.
Good to see Ricardo Clark (with the winning goal even!) back after his horror show of a World Cup.
Parkhurst in defense was good. Not sure about whoever that goalie was. New guy at right back (AJ DellaSomething) was ok as well.
Venezuela was horrendous and that we barely squeaked by them speaks terribly of our “home league” talent level…
Interesting...
we agree a bit more on the players than I thought. I don’t like Feilhaber starting, think that he is more the super sub type for the national team. He somehow just does better coming off the bench… maybe he needs an eye on how the game is going first. Zusi was better than Shea, but had some of his own mistakes… that said he was fresh to the whole thing so he could easily get into rhythm. I was also happy for Clark, and surprised by it, and thought Parkhurst did pretty well (surprised he hasnt picked up more caps). DeLaGarza slipped a lot, though- I was scared it would lead to something worse… boy needed a change of boots. But it is nice to have a new prospect for that RB position ever since Lijac got put in the basket (after being put on the left flank instead).
Venezuela was definitely going for the “if we beat them up they wont have enough subs to win” approach, which I found surprising. For all the “physicality” of the MLS, our NT really doesn’t participate much in the fighting and diving (until someone picks the fight with them)… at least not as much as some other NT’s. But we’ve always had trouble finishing chances… we haven’t much in the way of good striking prospects (Agudelo looked good for his initial games, but not sure where he was… hasn’t shown up much since, though).
And thank goodness you feel the same about Jones- I was playing politically correct up above in the event I was missing something spectacular, but I think he’s sort of a douche that takes his call ups for granted, don’t really like what he brings to the team, and now he gets to captain the side almost only a year after his debut, which is crap. Not to mention his ban being for something entirely malicious and that being a terrible example of what a captain should be.
